Very disappointed, I ordered a nice delivery meal last night for Valentine's Day. I was very excited and loved the food here, my girlfriend wasn't feeling well so we decided to order in to still celebrate. We put together a nice spread and the order said it would be an hour. After an hour I got an update saying it would be delayed til 9:30. After waiting 2hrs the order was cancelled and left me and my girlfriend were left with no dinner and no explanation. We tried calling to pick it up ourselves but no one picked up and the mailbox was full. Very disappointed that the experience was disregarded and we were left hanging. The fact that Speranza could not be reached and our order was just left for nothing really left a bad taste in my mouth. Today I tried to reach out but the mailbox is still full and there is no email. I really want to be supportive but it really kind of ruined what should have been a nice evening. In fact for best comfy Italian food, we like mamma osteria or osteria mamma on melrose but I don't like driving there so we walk over to Speranza instead. Love everything about this place including the casual ambiance, chic industrial decor, and THE FOOD. We came on a Sunday night after 8 pm and were able to find street parking very easily and seated right away. The dining area is located in an enclosed outdoor patio with a few tables inside next to the kitchen. We opted to sit outside where a blanket was provided in case we got cold, but it wasn't needed. We started off with a burrata appetizer, which had the sweetest heirloom tomatoes I've ever tasted. Next we had the beet salad with arugula and Parmesan flakes. The flavors of the dish meshed really well. For our main course, we opted for the lobster risotto and linguini with clams. Both were phenomenal! I loved the food the first time I went there, but the second time it was terrible. The server swore by their short ribs, so I ordered them. First bite and I knew this was not a dish I could eat. It tasted like mush and fat and even the sauce was gross. The server didn't bother to do a quality check. I didn't eat it and the server never asked why. We never even saw our server between the order and when he asked if we wanted the check. They actually tried to take the full and uneaten plate away from me without ASKING ME why I didn't eat it or even if I was finished. I had to stop them from taking it so I could box it (hell, they made me pay for it, so someone should eat it) and gave it to a homeless person. I am not one to ask for free food, and I wasn't asking them to comp it, but I wasn't expecting to leave hungry with no recognition from anyone on staff that I had a bad experience! On top of this, when we came in the place was practically empty. At least 8 open tables on their patio alone. Still, the manager asked if we had made a reservation, gave me an attitude when I said no, and then gave me the old "we'll see what we can do." These tables weren't filled the entire time we were there. This greeting doesn't make you seem like a "busy restaurant" or that you are "doing me a favor" by seating me. This makes you seem like an a**hole. I'm extremely disappointed because I would eat at this restaurant all the time if the service was better. I live down the street and would love a spot I could walk to for dinner. Speranza is not chic or cool. It used to be both of those things. Unfortunately it now suffers the malaise of mediocrity. You literally taste the laziness of the owners. The food is bland, boring and stuck. The salads lack any acid, use cheap oils and are not properly seasoned. The pasta is flaccid, the sauces are industrial. Forget about the proteins. The restaurant was full, with everyone waiting for something, anything. A server, wine, the menu, their food. The vibe outside was great but at this point a little long in the tooth, a little dirty and not cared for. If you want cheap pasta there are many other low budget pasta joints on the east side. I've been here 3 times. The first time I enjoyed it, I went back another time and then I went back for my birthday dinner. Things were just fine until my friend found literally a moth in her sautéed spinach. It had without a doubt been cooked in the spinach, it was underneath a leaf and also it was covered in the butter sauce. When we let the waiter know, he was very apologetic and obviously took the plates away and said that'd be comped. We still asked to talk to a manager because I work in the food industry and knew it was the most direct and helpful way to relay info. He said that the bug fell onto the food when it was being carried out from the kitchen and insisted that it "wasn't our fault" and we "shouldn't feel bad" while my friend was trying to explain that it had clearly been in the food the whole time. He said he couldn't do anything more than comp the spinach and he gave our table a couple of pieces of tiramisu. From the maitre d to the support staff, they really do an outstanding job to make you feel welcome and cared for. This neighborhood restaurant is a real gem and I can see why most people want to keep it a secret. This is def the best pasta at this price point in the neighborhood. No one does it better. We had a table of 9 last night. Ordered red and white bottles and went in on the appetizer. Prosciutto and melone is a perfect starter, we then ordered the burrata and the cheese plates. The service bread is always warm. I had the bottega which was deliciously fishy as was the squid ink pasta. The shrimp and asparagus pasta was awesome. We also had the lamb which was a big hit. Some of the best pasta I've had since Italy! The noodles are handmade and very chewy or "al dente" as they say in Italy. I had the linguine and clams and my friend had the tomato cream pasta with shrimp and asparagus... Both delicious. Also the serving sizes are quite generous! Took half home for lunch the next day. The complimentary bread is so tasteful and comes with an olive and tomato tapenade. I'm not a fan of olives but the tomato one was so great... Asked for more twice haha. Service could be improved a bit as you always have to flag the waiters down for a while, but other than that this place is amazing. Will definitely be back! read more

I recently visited this restaurant with my friends for a birthday and was amazed by how cute the restaurant is! The restaurant is easy to miss because it's covered on all sides but once you walk inside, you're taken away into an enchanted garden filled with trees and bushes. The tables have cute flower arrangements on it. The downside is that this restaurant is VERY cramped. They start off the dinner with fresh, warm bread (yum!). I ordered the squid ink pasta but it was way too salty! My friends who ordered the same dish agreed as well. Their other pasta dishes weren't as salty (i.e. their shrimp and asparagus one). It's a cute date night spot but I'd definitely want to try their other dishes. Parking is also a pain in that area. I got lucky with a spot on Hyperion but some of my friends had to walk 10-15 minutes from their parking spot. read more

My friend knew the owner and she was one of the most loveliest people you could ever meet. Speranza is easily the best Italian restaurant I've ever been to in my life. Firstly, it is important to note that this place is actually Italian, not the fancier "New American" Italian stuff you commonly see in wealthier areas. I empathize with some of the complaints with the low star review on this page (e.g. "bad service" or "tiny place") but frankly none of that matters when the food is of this level of quality. Let's start off by discussing their bread and tapenade sauces. You can do olive oil and vinegar but please give the tapenade a chance--both variations are among the best you'll ever try. The bread is just fantastic as well; crusty on the outside but soft and warm on the inside. Not going to name all of the dishes I've tried here but will call out a few that blew my mind. Firstly is the Lasagna (capitalized properly to give it the respect it deserves). Lasagna is my favorite food hands down, and Speranza's Lasagna is the best Lasagna I've ever had in my life. This compact, dense, baked dish is made with what tastes like completely fresh pasta, cheese, meat, and tomato sauce. It's extraordinarily simple and decadent at the same time. Honestly not sure how to describe it other than that it's amazing. Another brilliant classic here is the black ink pasta. This is the real deal, none of that food coloring stained spaghetti you get at other restaurants. The smell is out of this world (slightly funky at first but you get addicted fast) and the flavor is of another dimension. Really everything is worth trying. Being on vacation I was really excited to try some new places and experience the LA vibe. I love how this place is mostly outside seating but enclosed and covered. Its cozy and has some greenery to make you feel like you're in a garden but then also some brightly colored accents on chairs and pillows. We chose a spot with a longer table for our party of 5. The seating was like a cement bench with rubber mats on them which I didn't mind, there was even a little blanket to put on your lap if it got cold. The waitress comes, shes nice, poured us all some water. Checked back in on us to see how we were doing on our deciding or if we had questions. They brought out some really delicious bread fresh from the oven with 2 different dipping sauces. Which I really enjoyed. We all finally decided on some dishes. It was tough. One person in our group really wanted a white cream sauced base pasta but there were none to choose from. And I was really hoping there would be some chicken or something I could add but, unfortunately not. They do have shrimp but as far as meats go that is all there is besides the dish with meat sauce and rigatone. I was still excited to try some home made pasta after a long night of being hung over. We all ordered different things. My dish was great, would have been better with some protein but still was good. I was confused and was thinking we accidentally came to a vegetarian place and then I noticed the shrimp and meat sauce dish. The pasta was made really well and the sauce was just the right amount, it also had some veggies in it which were a great substitution to not having meat in there. The helpings are plenty! Well unless you order the Lasagne. One person in our group ordered the lasagne. We all looked over food pictures on Yelp before we ordered, lasagne was the only thing I couldn't find a picture for. I wasn't surprised to see why when it came out, the price is high, something like $26 and it came in the size of like a coffee cup. It was so small I felt bad for the poor guy who ordered it. I offered him some of mine. The pesto pasta was so intense with pesto that it was overbearing and the pasta its self couldn't be enjoyed. It should have been watered down with maybe some cream sauce. My sister was pretty disappointed. It also had no veggies or anything else in it besides pasta and a ton of pesto sauce (which tasted overly minty). I mean, I'm not a professional food critic but this was weird. The pasta with clams was great! It would have been nice if they brought out a separate little plate for the shells to be discarded but overall the dish was good. This place was busy. The ambiance was great. I enjoyed my dish, some of my group didn't which really brought me down. We were all on vacation and with it being LA we figured we would be able to find some awesome food we would all like. Its unfortunate that couldn't happen. To round out the experience we ask for the bill, the lady doesn't come back with it for at least 10 - 15 minutes as we all sit there quiet, awkward. The bill comes and we hand them our cards. We had 4 cards total. We needed to pay separately. Well immediately the girl tells me "we try to only have 3 cards per group", I let her know we need to get out of there and we dont have another option. She said we need to let them know how much on each card to put. They give us a receipt that has no details so we couldn't even add it up because we didn't have the prices of our meals memorized. So we wait some more and ask someone for a menu. My boyfriend spends about 15 minutes trying to separate it all out by putting the total needed to be charged to each card next to the last 4 digits on the card. We finally get this separated and give it to a waitress, then they say, how are we supposed to figure this out?... are you kidding me? The amount you need to charge is next to the last 4 digits of the card you need to charge it to.... then the guy is like, well what about the tax? Were from Oregon so we don't think about this, my boyfriend just tells him to add all the tax onto one card to try and make it easy. Seriously. It took us so long to get out of this place. PLEASE INVEST IN A DECENT CREDIT CARD PROCESSING SYSTEM, for the love of god! This was the last problem I expected us to run into. read more

Speranza = hyperbole. It's a bummer, too. I love this neighborhood. When my group walked up to the entryway, the server asked if we had a reservation for our party of 9. Bashfully, we admitted we didn't. And I bashfully publicly admit here that I didn't know until now that Speranza was this week's It Place. They accommodated us gracefully and we sat on the lovely patio and looked at the lovely people. Busser dude slammed bread on the table. Glasses (empty) followed by surfer busser dude, who made me smile, but who pissed off some members of the party when he complained about the size of their bags. I asked for a wine list, after I got excited about the menu. I didn't know it was "BYO," as the waiter said. "There's a liquor store across the street," he added. Cooool. No corkage. The food is where everything went downhill. The cheese plates were tremendously large, but our server, who eventually endeared himself to me, didn't know, or was too busy to know, what they were. I asked because I wanted to learn, and he was like, "You know! Cow, goat, gorgonzola!" and BOLTED away. He was slammed but gracefully condescending. We were a big party of drinkers and foodies and he should have at least pointed at two and pretended to endorse them. The cheeses were good, though, again. It's a good thing, because it's all I ate. I ordered the shrimp and asparagus (homemade) fettucini in a tomato cream sauce. It came out a brick. Nothing was "creamy" about it. The shrimp = rubber. The asparagus = undercooked. (Raw, even, and raw asparagus can make you really sick.) The sauce = non-existent. My friend had pesto on her pasta and it was bland as all hell, and her pasta was under al dente, to say the least. My acquaintance had the bacon-chile ziti and it was soaking in bacon grease. He liked in, and I quipped that that was where all our oil went from our pesto and cream sauce. I'm sorry, but that food was unpassable. I dumped the olive (questionably olive) oil and balsamic from the table on my pasta and added a ton of cheese when server dude came around, but it didn't help, because of the varied poor textures of the ingredients. I ambushed our server and quietly, privately explained my dish, which he took off the check. There was no arguing.I am not going to pay $16 for crappy pasta, ever. Call me a cheap bitch. There, along with the pretty patio and the absence of corkage fee, is the other star. They HAVE TO get their food dialed, or I will never return. Just had the WORST customer service experience. We sat down, our waitress took our order, and that was the last we saw of her for the next 45 minutes as we waited for our food. When we finally approached her about it, she just said, "Well, we're really busy. Do you want to sit down?" (!!!!) No apology whatsoever. When we got our linguine with clams, it was basically pasta and clams in a bowl of oil. Pretty gross. Our steamed veggies were also flavorless. Silver lining: linguine did taste handmade. Our waitress looked at me like I was absolutely INSANE for mentioning my medical dietary restrictions and asking about possible substitutions (I just asked if they had a cream sauce. That's it.) She left the table a few times during our ordering to ask if my request was possible because she's "never encountered pickiness like this before." IT'S NOT PICKINESS! I can't eat tomatoes. Matt B. and I go out for Italian pretty often. We have two spots within walking distance that get most of our business. As far as food goes, both Il Capriccio and Farfalla are more consistent than Speranza. We keep making the drive, though, because the atmosphere here is wonderful. I love the outdoor patio. It's charming and comfortable, with well spaced tables and heaters and blankets for cooler nights. The inside of the restaurant is pleasant as well, but there are few dining spaces in L.A. that I prefer to the patio. Service is generally prompt and friendly, and meals here are always relaxing. This is especially true when you add a glass or two of wine. There's a small bar on the patio, and the wine list is good and affordable. I've had the house pinot, sangiovese, syrah, and probably a couple more, and I've liked them all. The food ranges from average to very good. Bread is decent and complimentary, but sometimes you have to ask for it. I like the prosciutto and melon for a shared appetizer. It's fresh and delicious. At all Italian restaurants, I go straight for the pasta, and Speranza's is pretty solid. I really like the ziti all'Amatriciana, a housemade ziti with pancetta, tomato, parmesan, and a nice dose of chili. The bacon is wonderful, with the right amount of chew, and the tomato and chili make a lovely acidic sauce. The fettucine with shrimp, asparagus, and tomato is also decent, with nice flavors and pasta. If you like bottarga, the linguine alla bottarga has a good briny flavor, with parsley and olive oil in addition to a generous shaving of the cured roe. It could use some more oomph (garlic), but it's pretty good. Matt's standard order is the penne alla checca, a simple bowl of penne with tomato, garlic, and basil. The roasted tomatoes are fantastic, and this pasta features a plentiful dose of pungent garlic. The problem with Speranza's pasta, though, is that they're sometimes overcooked. About half the time, they're an on point al dente, but we've gotten noodles so limp they're almost hard to pick up with a fork. I've also gotten tough shrimp and woody asparagus with my fettucine. If you're lucky, you might get a bite of something sweet with the check. I really liked a little square of pastry dough frosted and covered in slivered almond. One of these days, I might pay for dessert (blueberries and cream sound up my alley). Until then, I'm happy enough with a glass of wine and sometimes al dente pasta on Speranza's wonderful patio. read more

I get the feeling that the food here was great at one time, but now that the restaurant is extremely popular, they've let their quality slide. We ordered the black squid ink risotto and the clam pasta which is apparently one of their most popular dishes. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! First off, the portions are kind of small which you think would indicate amazing tasting food. Not so! I could easily have recreated this dish with a little white wine, olive oil, salt and butter. With clam pastas, it's all about the sauce, and this sauce was completely average, if not below average. I wasn't even interested soaking my bread in it! The only plus to this dish was their homemade noodles which were actually very good in terms of texture. However, good noodles mean nothing without a good sauce. Clams were nothing special. The black squid ink risotto was also pretty disappointing. The risotto was a little soggy, and the dish itself didn't taste like much of anything but salt with chewy bits of squid. In terms of black squid ink anything, I have had much better elsewhere. I did have the opportunity to try a bite of my dad's lobster risotto. That dish was actually pretty good, and I'm not usually a big fan of lobster. I won't be coming back here again, but if I did, I'd get the lobster risotto. read more

This place is a rare find in this area, and I have to say I can't believe it took me so long to go here. The two best things about this place are without a doubt the service and the BYOB factor. Our waitress was absolutely phenomenal, and made the experience a lot of fun. And the fact that we could bring our own wine allowed us to drink MUCH better stuff than we could have afforded with restaurant markup. The food? Absolutely decent stuff. I had the spaghetti pomodoro with the fresh pasta upgrade (I agree with the other posters, instead of charging extra for this just take the dried stuff off the menu and charge whatever you want for it) and it was very tasty and fresh. Nothing amazing, but the fresh pasta factor justifies eating pasta in a restaurant when you could make the stuff at home. And it's pretty cheap. Dinner for 4 with 4 entrees and 2 shared desserts was like $80. Factor in the wine savings and this place is an utter steal. read more
