3.5 stars if i could. Spice is our go-to dinner take out place for thai cuisine, partly due to lack of other thai options in the neighborhood (well there is Land but that's a whole different story). Spice's problem is lack of consistency; sometimes a particular dish is great, another day it's just terrible. So you really don't know what you will get. This place has awesome food. The pad Thai and volcanic chicken were awesome. The Pad Thai was pretty good, but required some extra spice and limes on the side to enhance it. The chicken was juicy and the flavor "unique." I highly recommend them. The spring rolls and steamed dumplings were good, but not spectacular. We had 1 appetizer (summer rolls) and 2 vegan dishes (fried rice with tofu and the mock duck) - and they all were missing taste. Good for cheap Thai food, but nothing extraordinary. I shared the pad Thai with vegetables, spicy fried rice with tofu, and vegetable dumplings. I also had the Thai tea. Everything was decent except the vegetable dumplings. I've made dumplings before, so I know what the texture should feel like. The paper was thick and chewy, which was very odd. Their food is actually pretty good, but the service is just awful. They are so rude and I they make you feel like they are doing you a favor. Tonight is the LAST STRAW, will never go back. Ordered take out, two curry dishes, that's it. The food took ONE HOUR AND 45 MINUTES TO ARRIVE and was room temperature at best. I called them at 8:35, they said it was on the way. Spice has a great lunch menu, which they offer every day. You basically buy an entree and choose one appetizer for free. I usually go with one of the veggie curries or the holy basil eggplant dish and the spring roll or tom yum appetizers, which comes out to $8-$9. The food tastes great and the service is nice. They have a large outdoor seating area, which is a plus in the summer. We've ordered take-out from Spice on a few occasions, but were not as happy. Went on a Saturday night around 7:30 pm. About a 10 minute wait for a party of 2. It's a pretty small place, but turnover is pretty fast. Serves were attentive and nice, ambiance is pleasant. We ordered the garlic and pepper stir-fry with veggies (but made spicy) and also the rama dish with veggies. Requested light sauce and salt. Everything turned out as requested and was pretty delicious. They actually made the garlic dish spicy when often times they forget and then have to bring out a new one. Only real complaint is that when you get just veggies, it's only broccoli, carrots, bok choy, and maybe one other. Many places also put in string beans, snow peas, baby carrots, peppers, etc... Could have been more vibrant. Still a good place to go if you want Thai because the food is always pretty solid and the prices are right. read more

Went on a Saturday night for dinner and the food was blah. I got the crispy half duck, which was not half of a duck at all. It was more like a quarter. Ordered a number of menu items via Caviar. The food was kinda bland, which is something that Thai food should never be. I can't eat eggs for a personal health reason and requested that the son-in-law egg be left off one dish. The restaurant put it on anyway. I also requested Thai spicy for two of the dishes, and there was no heat, much less a native Thai heat. I was underwhelmed. Came here with a friend and this place was the perfect small setting to catch up and talk. The service was pretty good considering that they came around at least 3 times before my friend and I had stopped talking long enough to look at the menu. We ordered the spring rolls as an appetizer and I would have to say that they were pretty average, nothing too special. I ordered the mojito as a drink and the red curry as an entree. The mojito was nicely presented and it tasted pretty good. The red curry was decent but lacked some flavor and spice. However, dessert was pretty amazing. I ordered the banana cheese cake roll and man did it just melt in your mouth! I loved it but I might just love all desserts. We came here after Land Thai across the street said there'd be a 45-minute wait. I think I'll suffer the wait next time. Though the service here was mightily attentive, the food was just unremarkable. Our table started with the jade seafood dumplings that were heavy on wrapper - my first bite into one was all dough - and bland on filling. With crab and and shrimp meat inside, you would think it would taste something like that from the sea! We also had the warm duck salad which was a high note for everyone at the table. Our entrees consisted of the vegetarian fried brown rice, the pad thai, the golden curry noodle and the drunk man noodle. I think the latter was the only relatively satisfying choice. The golden curry noodle was angel hair pasta which was an odd choice and heavy handed next to the garnishes and not nearly enough spice. Isn't that the namesake of this place? I had asked for extra spice in my drunk man noodle with shrimp - I got the spice, had to fish around for my 3 measly shrimp. I think if your palate is new to spice and you are unfamiliar with Asian cuisines, this place might suit you as it well hits notes of blandness, hesitation, and muddled cuisines. read more

This is my go to thai take-out on the UWS. Spice is inexpensive, consistently good, and delivery is usually fast (often under 20 minutes). They will deliver 1 dish, unlike Land Thai, so it's a good place for ordering take-out for one. I usually get the brown noodle AKA pad si yew. I would recommend asking for extra sauce if you order this- they can be skimpy. read more

I judge Thai restaurants based on their spicy fried rice. Their Six O'Clock Train Fried Rice does not disappoint! I thought I would never find the replica of my favorite one back home up here, but I did and I'm thrilled. Very solid Thai food place, compares well to the numerous others in the area. I had the Pad Thai (boring, I know) with chicken which was delicious and not too dry like Pad Thai often is. They didn't have peanuts on the side to mix in, which was disappointing. Lunch specials are daily including weekends, so if they don't give you the lunch menu, just request it.
