We used to come for sponge cake with the old owners and it's great to see it has spun off with new but existing management. The sponge cakes come in different flavors like ube and green tea which are all a little more money but the original is just as good. It rivals the "best spongecake" place across the street and is a little cheaper. The space is small but also a nice place for an intimate meeting.

I have to be honest. I actually first heard about this place from social media and it really peeked my interest because I love sponge cakes. I enjoyed their story and learning about how this mom and pop cafe put so much hard work into creating these delicious sponge cakes. They offer different flavor sponge cakes but I mostly get their original flavor. These tasty cakes are so soft, fluffy, delicate and delicious that you can't help eating one the moment you buy one. I also take some home so that I can pile on some whipped cream on these cakes. Definetly one of my favorite sponge cakes that you can't just eat one.

***3.5 star*** 2024 - $1.25 2025 - $1.50 2026 - $2.00 These are the price increases for the flavored sponge cakes over the years. The regular flavor has stayed at $1. For the size (stayed consistent), it is quite small. I like the flavors offered but they are a tad $$ for the size. The hot coffee i had wasnt that great (S $1.50 vs L $3.75). I would come back if i wanted to try interesting flavors. Service was good and fast. There is always a revolving door of people coming in.

Stopped by Spongies Cafe and it was a fun little find. They specialize in sponge cakes with a lot of different flavors, and each one is only around $1-2, so it's easy to try a bunch. We ended up getting a mix--original, black sesame, coconut, cappuccino, and a few others. The pandan coconut was our favorite, but honestly all the flavors we tried were really good. Light, soft, and not overly sweet, so you don't feel weighed down even after trying several. Great spot if you want something quick and easy to share, especially if you like trying different flavors.

Stumbled upon this cafe looking for a Sunday coffee. Instead, we walked out with a little pastry, a matcha and a hot Thai tea. First, I have to talk about the Thai tea. I haven't had one of these in ages but it was heavenly. Highly recommend this!! I also got an iced matcha with almond milk. You can also get oat milk and you can even customize your ice (less ice, more, etc.). I got "less ice" but did feel like the matcha was a little watered down still. Finally, the spongies. There's a flavor menu with these at the front and each are about $1-$2. Highly recommend trying one! As the name implies they're impossibly light and airy, with the flavors being subtle and not overly sweet. We really enjoyed the Black Sesame Spongie. They also have spongie cookies that are pre packaged at the front it looked like. We were served fairly quickly and went on our way. It's a small cafe but don't overlook this cute little spot if you're needing a pick me up!

They definitely have more flavors than Kam Hing across the street, and their original flavor is cheaper. However, I find the texture for Kam Hing to be better than spongies because I felt like spongies' cakes were dryer and I had to drink a lot more liquids to eat the whole sponge cake. I prefer the sponge cake to be a little more spongy and wetter so it's not just super dry. The service was quick, but there's minimal room to sit here.

Came to try out their sponge cakes!! Yummy!! I got the original, coconut & Thai tea flavors!! Prices are decent & it's a cute little Cafe where you can sit & enjoy your snacks too!! Quick & friendly service! They take CC too which is a plus for ppl who don't have cash on them!!

    Valerie Z.

The cake is perfection and the prices for cakes and coffee are great! Only deducted star because the bags for the flavors aren't marked so it can get confusing when you get home and the flavoring is very light. Father in law confirmed that these cakes "aren't too sweet" and enjoyed them! Service was fast and if you wanted to sit down with a warm beverage you would have space cute ambiance.

OMG, this is even better than the original bakery that started these Cantonese sponge cake. Highly recommend to try the original for a dollar. All the flavors are delicious ! When you spend five dollars you can use a credit card. You can ask for a warm sponge cake!

A classic spot to stop by in Chinatown! They have a big variety of fun flavors and everything is super cheap. The regular ones are $1 and the flavored are $1.50! The sponge cakes are super light and airy while not being too sweet. Perfect to pair with a coffee or tea! My favorite is definitely the Pandan coconut!

    Lesly M.

Place is cute, limited seating though. Service is kind and helped us decide what we wanted. Got the spongies, we loved the original and green tea the most! Green tea tasted like matcha. Couldn't really taste the red velvet as much. All were so soft and subtle, perfect for a light snack.

Food: Pretty good, but it was very confusing figuring out which flavor was which since there are no labels. Service: Good, but it seemed rushed. Ambiance: Relaxed Extra Note: There aren't a lot of seats, so keep that in mind when coming. The food has great value though!

One of the flavored sponges- super fluffy and absolutely delicious
    Janet L.

I absolutely love sponge cakes exactly like the ones that Sponges sells so I cannot rate this place highly enough. I was shocked by the variety of flavors they had to offer and ended up buying a mixed dozen of plain and flavored sponges. Please note when you mix and match like this that the price will vary from the domain dozen. The seating area is small but it's easy to take these sponges on the go and enjoy them all week! Service is super fast so you'll get in and out quickly.

How long do the sponge cakes stay fresh?

If you leave them in a sealed container, they last about a week.

    Affiliated with Kam Hing?

No. We are not affiliated with Kam Hing. Fernando after working there for almost three decades went into business for himself. I hope you will stop in & try our cakes & great customer service.

Got off the E train and when we looked for Chinese food, this place popped up with good reviews and it was just a short walk from where we got off the train. My buddies ordered the special lunches and we also got two types of xlb's, beef chow fun, and some fried dumplings. The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. Nice and juicy and great with some ginger, soy sauce, and spicy chili. Friendly service and food comes out pretty quickly. Credit card is accepted. Bathroom was also very clean, which is sometimes rare in some Chinese restaurants I have been to. If you're looking for a good Chinese meal, stop here when you're in the Chelsea area.

I missed a call and literally two minutes later the call came through again and the woman yelled at me - "hurry up hurry up, hurry up, hurry up!" said the driver was waiting 10-15 minutes for me, which was simply untrue - I got a call literally two minutes before- just rude. Added a screenshot in case the owner doubles down that it was 15 mins. Guess the first call was from the delivery driver, and the second was from the restaurant itself. ‍ But the really disappointing part is that they didn't pack any soup separate from the noodles! - So my chicken dumpling noodle soup basically had no soup - don't know if they forgot it or if it was absorbed by the noodles but most restaurants at this point know to pack the broth and the noodles separately,- so I ended up having to add some of my own vegetable broth, which totally was not the flavor I was hoping for. So - love the food, but delivery service leaves a lot to be desired - next time I'll try giving instructions to pack the soup separate from the noodles and see if that helps!

Located within the historic Chelsea Market building--a former Nabisco factory where Oreo cookies were first produced--the restaurant feels theatrical in the best possible way. The soaring ceilings, dramatic lighting, and energetic atmosphere create a sense of occasion from the moment you walk in. It feels less like simply going out to dinner and more like stepping into a beautifully staged production. I started with a Botanist Gin Martini with a twist, which paired wonderfully with the meal. The surprise star of the evening was the new Cucumber Tiger Salad. The balance of flavors was exceptional: bright acidity, a pleasant touch of heat, and just enough mint to make each bite feel fresh and exciting. Every so often the mint would come through and suddenly all the flavors would click together in a way that made me immediately want another bite. This is a dish I would happily order again. Next came the Edamame Dumplings. They were delicate and comforting, especially when enjoyed with the accompanying broth. The broth adds depth and richness that elevates the entire dish. My only suggestion would be the slightest touch more salt, perhaps even a finishing sprinkle of black volcanic salt for both flavor and presentation. I also found myself wishing there were a bit more of that delicious broth because it contributes so much to the overall experience. For my entrée, I ordered the Glazed Alaskan Black Cod, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation. The fish was rich, buttery, and perfectly prepared. What impressed me most was how thoughtfully the accompaniments were composed. The pickled cucumbers brought brightness, acidity, and crunch, while the black bean and eggplant relish delivered deep savory notes and unexpected complexity. I'm generally not an eggplant fan, but this relish was outstanding. The cucumbers and relish sit at opposite ends of the flavor spectrum, yet both somehow make the cod even better. Looking back, I think a glass of Sauvignon Blanc alongside the cod would have been the perfect pairing. I finished with the Miso Caramel Milk Bar, which was spectacular. Decadent, sweet, salty, and touched with just enough umami to keep every bite interesting. The chocolate crumble underneath added a wonderful crunch that contrasted beautifully with the creamy ice cream and luscious caramel sauce. Every component worked together perfectly, creating a dessert that was both indulgent and sophisticated. From start to finish, the meal felt polished, thoughtful, and memorable. Thank you!

Then we got a handful of apps - everyone else swore by all the ones they'd had - but I just tried the Salt & Pepper Shrimp and... sweet baby Jesus, this little plate had a wicked amount of flavor from every angle.  "Aggressively seasoned" might be an understatement.  Wild. Onto the mains and I ventured towards their Spicy Drunken Noodle (my go-to whenever I'm hitting a Thai restaurant on my home turf) and... yeah, you probably guessed it - incredible. Not the biggest portion but they made every single component sing with flavor. With so much going on - of course I needed to indulge with another drink (hey, I wasn't driving!). There were six of us, it came to about $100 a person... welcome to NYC. But we did get a wide selection of plates/food and those two drinks accounted for about $40 of my tab. (And you'll never see such a heavy wine pour at a restaurant... they filled the glass almost to the rim - which was not even something I'd do for myself when I'm home.) Definitely recommended.
