Very average place. Came here for lunch, so I may be biased as diners are breakfast foods in my book. The meat in the pastrami sandwich was decent, but the bread was soft and could have used some toasting. Should have gotten the fries instead of the soup. We just had to order fries on the side since everyone skipped the fries on the lunch special. Cake was a bit stale, but reminds me of every other Diner cake. Pro tip: don't get the side salad if you get the Gyro. There's already a salad built into the Gyro. I'll come back again for breakfast, just to see what it's like. read more

I'm surprised at how poorly this place treats paying customers. Been coming here for a few weeks now but never again. Walked here with my dog trying to get a table outside like a I normally do when I come. There were no available tables outside once I got there so I wanted to ask if they'd bring one out for me. Out of common courtesy I didn't want to go thru the front with my dog and I know there's a back door to squires where the waiters come out of to bring food to the people sitting outside so I wanted to try and ask thru here if they'd bring me out a table. It's located to the right of the fridge they have inside and to the left of that fridge there's a window. I caught the waiters attention who was at the window (who saw me standing with my dog) and instead of trying to help me, he pointed me towards the front door saying I'd need to ask whatever I was going to ask there. So, I walk around the front, immediately as I enter the front door of the restaurant the rude employee working the cashier ( probably was the owner or manager. Felt that vibe from him) ordered me to leave the restaurant with my dog. This right after his employee told me to ask thru the front. Just really rude and really rubbed the wrong way. I ordered 2 salads through Seamless. The salad for my coworker was fine but the salad that I ordered for myself was NOT ok. First of all I ordered a chicken caesar salad. The restuarant did not put parmesan cheese in my salad. I had an initial bite of 2 small pieces of chicken (I had to cut it up since they sent me chicken breast sizes) and 1 piece was ok and the other piece was hard (not overcooked, seemed undercooked). My caesar dressing also tasted like something was wrong with it (I asked my coworker to taste the dressing and she also felt like something was wrong with it). My coworker went and got me a new salad from a store nearby as I am 8 months pregnant and hadn't eaten for several hours. The restaurant has refused to refund the monies paid for this salad and Seamless is unable to refund the monies without the restaurants approval. The cheese ravioli was mediocre, the sauce was watery and acidic. The side salad was merely iceberg lettuce, some just-about-to-turn cucumber slices, a slice of tomato, onion slices, and one olive. Tried this diner on the third day of my NY trip. I had the lasagna on the first night, which wasn't bad, but not particularly outstanding. The service and overall feel of Squires is just what I expected as a tourist. I just came back from my second trip where I had the double burger platter. My god, this was easily one of the best burgers I ever had! I also had a vanilla milkshake with the burger which made the whole experience as authentic as could be. Very friendly and helpful staff. I've walked by this place a million times without really considering going in because I'm usually on my way somewhere, and it's nestled in the middle of and underneath of Southbridge Towers, a curious development which kind of looks off limits. Whenever I cut through there I feel like I'm going to be stopped by some 1970s sci-fi police for hand-print identification. This complex looks like one of those Utopian ideas gone wrong, or a prison where there prisoners are also the guards, or something on Roosevelt Island. Wikipedia tells me it's a classic example of a NORC (naturally occurring retirement community), and old people are no mystery... it's just something that happens to young people. What is always a mystery, in Manhattan, is how people ended up where they did, and how they are able to keep their rent from going through the roof. Since Squires Diner is not right on the sidewalk, but about a block inside the development, I had always feared you had to be a resident to eat there, which of course isn't true, or that it was an order-at-the-counter/corner deli style/egg sandwich kind of place. But no! It's a genuine, sit-down, home cooking DINER, all too rare downtown (and it's been a year or two since Andrews closed). Some day there will be nothing left but chain fast-food joints and we'll all be saying, "What happened?" To be able to go into a place, sit down in a booth, have someone take your order! And it's affordable. My only complaint is that the amount of homefries was SO SMALL. Like a caviar portion of homefries. Like they were white truffles or something. They're potatoes! But this is a Manhattan-wide complaint, that I always complain about. And I saw a guy hoisting in a big sack of potatoes on his shoulder (always a good sign) while I was eating, so maybe they were just almost out. Also, as usual, flat-screen TV, sitting atop the beverage cooler like a shrine of desperation. But the food was good! The place--which always looks kind of almost not open from the sidewalk--was busy, bustling, happening. The people who work there were lovely and welcoming. Best Diner in the area for deliveries. The food is on time, tasty and they always follow the instructions that you include in your seamless order. I was craving for fried chicken and the closest place was this diner, they had chicken fingers and they were so freaking tasty. I couldn't believe it. I had a burger as well and I added avocado and it was so good. I always think diners are very low quality, but this one is way better than the Pearl Diner in the financial District. We also order, a chocolate ice cream shake and French toast. The challah bread French toast wasn't that great, but it was decent. In general, the delivery expectation was set for 7:38pm and they showed up around 7:10pm. My cravings were satisfied and I was a happy customer. I haven't been there physically, maybe I should try and then update my review when I see what's what. But so far so good with the delivery service. read more

Although its hidden within the retirement complex, Squires Diner is a great place to chill in Summer days.My girlfriend first introduced it to me and I loved it. The staff is welcoming and the environment pleasant. The food is HUGE and enjoyable. Wallet-friendly and it is quiet. he customers makes part of the nice experience. They are friendly and are very considerate. I remember when there was only one booth available next to a group of old ladies. The side of the booth where my girlfriend sat on was covered by the old ladies' coats. But when they realized, they politely asked if we wanted to remove them and also complimented her purse! However, the booths are kind of broken as they swing backwards as you lean on them. Yesterday, I didn't pay attention that their credit card machine was not working so when I went to pay, a friendly man apologized for the inconvenience and said that I could pay later. The diner was mostly empty, with maybe 6-7 other people there. The decor/ambiance is your typical diner scene, nothing fancy. I ordered some French toast with eggs and bacon, and a cup of coffee. The food came out fast enough and was pretty good. The coffee was only so-so. The waitstaff was attentive. Including tip the meal cost me 13.25. I was told by my hotel that this was a great place to eat. It was hard to find but I asked around and finally made it. I walked into the crowded diner and noticed I was the only person of color there, but hey, this is NY, I am fine with that. i go to the front and asked a worker for a table. He directed me to one of the only empty booths by the window. Before I could make it to my table, another couple, who had just entered the restaurant raced to the table before me. I said to them" no, that's my table". Then another stafff member came to me and wanted to know why I had asked the couple who had just walked in to move. I said " because they came after me and I was told to sit here", he then left. After that I saw him give them water and take their order, while I was not given anything and no one was available to serve me, even though I had entered the restaurant before them. I quickly realized this was not an establishment I would be willing to spend my money, so I asked to speak to the owner. I was told the owner was not there. Now the worker in the front was now telling me he was the manager and that he had not told me to sit there. I decided it was best to leave. WOW WHERE TO BEGIN . This place just keeps on getting better, from the vast improvements in the dining room to the best food on the planet , I ordered some mozzarella sticks and my favorite Mediterranean shrimp panini the most perfect panini ever . I even brought my wife to be here and she ordered the gyro and she fell in love with , I don't think we can ever eat anywhere else again . We also traveled over 40 miles to get here , a little over and hour and a half to get there .
