An excellent spot for breakfast. We had Podi dosa, uttapam and masala dosa with a round of filter coffee. The food was really well made, and the highlight of my meal was the coffee. I did check in for the offer, but was told that the vada wasn't available. Aah well. But the food was really tasty and I am sure I will go back if I am in the area again. Just a suggestion: Please dont keep open water jugs without lids and please dont serve the dosa or uttapam with sambar bowl kept on it. read more

Checked the menu items for Mini meals before ordering on phone. The person on phone said that the items that come with the order are puliogaray and potato fry. When I got the food and returned home, I found that the box had pongal and chickpeas instead of puliogaray and potato. There was no sorry or warning. They take money for the food and provide this kind of bad service. Thankfully I paid by credit card and I am going to report fraud. He also said that the food will be ready in 15 mins. I went there exactly in 15 mins and was made to wait for 10 more mins. read more

My daughter and I really love this place. The people that work here are so nice! I really enjoy the food . I am Italian and I can't really judge this cuisine, but all I know is I like it a lot! The flavors are so good in all of the dishes that I've tried here. I generally get a combo dish and always extra idli . I really love spicy food and they have some items that are spicy . Went here on an Indian festival day for lunch with 4 other friends. Place was packed and we had to wait about 15-20 minutes. We all ordered the thaali and honestly, was not very impressed. They had a holiday special thaali that day and I'm not sure why we were paying the extra $$ honestly. If you've had a thaali before at any other Indian spot in the South Bay - you'll know this had pretty much all The standard things served. Except I do remember they offered a choice between puri and chapati and it was unlimited meals. Maybe the rush hour made service really slow, but its not fun waiting for a cup of rasam for 20 min mid meals. Maybe it's a better experience on a non holiday, but definitely do not recommend going here on a holiday. read more

Not sure what the lower rating is all about. Went there on a weekend breakfast, the place was open at 8.30am. Ordered the combo plate and vada sambhar, not were really good and fresh. The place was empty so service was attentive. Given how Madurai place is so crowded, will definitely go here instead. read more

Was there after longtime to have a lunch and I was disappointed because of customer service and also quality of the food.. I walked in a there and no one was there at the host stand and waited for about 2-3 minutes to get seated.once I sat on my 2 top I found no glasses and spoons stocked and had to wait until I got my (south indian lunch thali with puri) and asked him to get me some silverware and a glass..I wasn't mad because it's understandable that there were only 2 of their FOH staff and 2 BOH staff working and 1 of them was handling both sections.. Coming to the food the poori and korma in the meal was awesome and should they deserve 5 stars for just that and part from that none of the curries,rasam and dessert were appetising.. Nevertheless I gonna give an other shot and see how does the experience gonna be... My husband found this place on yelp since we were looking for a good dosa place. We had a few other options where we regularly go, but wanted to try out a new place, hence we arrived. The place is pretty standard. The server there was completely clueless about the menu options, difference between 2 types of dosa, so we needed to call upon someone who had more knowledge of the menu. I did the yelp checkin to get free vada sambhar. The sambhar is really tasty and has a nice texture, but vada were little hard. We ordered 2 dosas, both of which were ready in about 5-7 minutes and were amazing! Mine was spicy andhra dosa, if I remember the name correctly, as it was amazing! My husband's dosa was great too. I was determined to give this place 4 stars, until... we ordered dessert! One was a rava sweet and another was pineapple custard. Both of them tasted EXACTLY the same, except the color being pink for the kesar rava and yellow for pineapple custard. It was in no way a "custard" in texture, looks or taste. On calling upon the server, she mentioned that that's how they make it. We even complained that it doesnt even taste like pineapple and her answer was "Oh, I have never tried it, so I dont know!" We were disappointed by this experience. Also upon entering, I was pushed to write a yelp review to get some free snacks, even if it was my first visit and I hadn't even had a glass of water there. Anyway, I would go here again for the nice dosas we had, will pass on the sweets and go on a day when I can be patient with the service and servers there. read more

Went around 4:00 pm, they were not able to offer what was mentioned in the menu, they offered. finally after coming down to 2 or 3 option i chose one and then it was made pathetic! i still tried to eat it but then found a hair in it. I just paid the bill and decided to go somewhere else. i would say they don't charge much but people are willing to pay more even if the basics are done right. read more

This is my second decent south Indian restaurant. It was great; both food and service. I had curry leaf dosa. It came as a big triangle and 5 kinds of sauce. There were curry flavored potato inside the dosa. It was tasty! All 4 sauces were great... There were not many customers (surprised because it was Sat night), so the service was quick, using iPad. Definitely come back to try another dish. read more

Close to my work place. So I frequent this place often. I am a sucker for curd rice. And these guys have good creamy curd rice that is served with a side of vegetables. During summer, I can live on this. This is what I go for very often. I have tasted their dosas. They are all pretty good with three chutneys and sambar. Their sambar vada is pretty decent. Not a great fan of their idli fry. It began to harden once it cooled down. Have tasted better idli podi fries. Try their lunch combo. Good value for money. read more

The food is good and one of the few dog friendly places. My golden loves idlis and waits patiently for something to "fall down". Vadas are hit and miss. Sometimes they are not crunchy while the last time we went it was dripping with oil. We brought it to the server's attention but apparently we would still be charged for it even though we didn't eat it. We like the place so I'm hoping the service improves otherwise there are a ton of alternatives in the area. read more

I am big fan of south Indian food and had lot of expectation from Anand Bhavan, first impression good but didn't have the satisfaction factor.. they made the ambience ditto a south Indian town hotel.. We ordered spicy masala dosa, idli wada and masala chai.. food was good, yes cant expect authentic food like back in town.. price is very reasonable..they do serve a big 3 feet family dosa, do try it.. I ordered the Kalyana Sapaadu (Marriage feast). Don't worry about the name, it is just a collection of different items served everyday in South India. You get a round tray of rice, sambar(Lentil masala curry), kootu(thick lentil gravy), poriyal(dry vegetable stir fried), aviyal(mixed vegetable curry), rasam(watery curry prepared with spices that kill flu, more of medicinal value), appalam (crispy pappadums), yogurt, pickle, sweet of the day. All items are nutritious, more of protein and vitamins in each curry. For togo orders, you can eat in the tray that comes with the items. No special or extra plates needed. Everything was well packed. Add to this, a banana to complete the palette. You can either order one of the Kalyana Saapaadu and serve for two or go for one per order.You will definitely feel being in the southern part of India and eating what people eat everyday there, Guaranteed!!!! We had brunch on Sunday here and I thought it was really good. I liked the dosa taste, quantity and types of chutney there, favorite for me was their tomato chutney. The peanut chutney was also good according to my wife. Felt their Pongal could have larger portions and much more semi solid in nature. Their potatoes in the dosa masala can be cut into shorter pieces too. They have these cute mini pooris that my daughter simply adored. Overall, decent and nice place to visit again read more

Ordered curry leaf dosa. It was pretty good. We also ordered uttapam which not well cooked but they happily replaced with the more roasted one. Dahi papadi chaat was 1/5 so would not recommend it. Tip: in general, avoid ordering chaat at South Indian restaurants as they are not specialized. read more

Please be very careful when you take a togo after 10pm. I had such a bad experience today. We placed the phone order @ 10pm for 4 items, was told order will be ready for pick up in 20 mins. I reached there by 10.20pm .. they made me wait till 10.40pm . Got the order and when checked the curry was given sufficient for 2 items. when I went back the person says I am sorry the curry was over . If the curry is over why do they really wanna take the phone orders. Another nice gentleman came back and gave all the curries again. When came home, we were so surprised to see the order of poori had 3 uncooked baby poories. When I called them back I was told 10pm is a very busy time for us as we have lot of customers. If you have lot of customers, why do you care to take phone orders when you have insufficient quantity.. Be very careful with your TOGO orders.. Please do check before you leave the place. read more

The dosa is crisp and the fermented flavor is delicate. The filtered coffee is popular so I had to try it, and I love it. I'm not sure everyone would like it though. It's a strong coffee, slightly bitter even with sugar. The milk is poured with a long pull to create foam. The foam is light, not creamy or velvety like a latte. It's a very small portion in a small cup, and it's HOT, very HOT. I like it but I can see how other people might not. I was confused the first time I went in to eat because seating and ordering is not typical. When you first walk in, you go to the host and they'll give you a number then you walk to the room to your left to order and pay. You're given a chip if you order a coffee or tea and move over to the right. You give your chip to the person preparing the drinks for you. They ask your preference and hand over the very HOT drink. Then you sit at the table with your number on it. Your food is brought over fairly quickly. They bring extra sambar and chutney if needed, no extra charge. My husband and I ordered a Masala Dosa which came with a white chutney and red chutney and sambar (soup); and a Mega Tiffin which had a more tightly rolled Masala Dosa (with potatoes, greens, onions inside, sambar, the 2 chutneys, 1 idyly (white bun), 2 vadais (donut shaped savory fritter), pongol (creamy grain - lentil and rice combo). I also had a mango lassi. The dosas were crisp and fresh and the filling was not too spicy for us. We really liked the dosas and the variety of other dishes that are also served. The coffee was very good. We had considered getting the Mylapore dosa, but the cashier mentioned it is spicy so we opted for the Masala one instead. Staff were friendly and helpful as we told them it was our first time there. We parked in the parking lot. Our server said often the parking lot is full and people park nearby and walk in. The restaurant was fairly full at that time with only a few tables available. Ambiance was casual and nice with high ceilings, booths or tables. We sat in a booth. Table was pretty and lots of natural light. You go in and get a table number. You take the menu and table card to the cashier and order. Which was strange because what about the 9:45 pm reservations? You kick those people out in 15 min? Anyway there is NO acknowledgement of my husband's birthday the whole night, no free dessert not even a candle on the dessert. The server is in a hurry to take away our plates while we are working on them. The server was also not warm. By far, the WORST experience at this high end restaurant we have experienced. One of the best South Indian restaurants I've ever been to outside India. The food reminds me of A.S. Rajasekhar caterers and Shabari/Sankar caterers from India, who cater to South Indian weddings. Service needs improvement, but the variety on the menu is fabulous. I love the combos. You get to sample a variety of items. You can tell the quality of a south indian restaurant by the coconut chutney and the filter coffee, both of which are great at Ananda Bhavan. The filter coffee reminded me of the coffee served at south indian weddings in India. I give top marks to the vada, kalyana saapattu, idli, sambhar, chutney, daal bholi, filter coffee, limited thaali, pongal, kesari, bisibele bhaath, and ofcourse the dosai. Upma was out of this world. This restaurant is NOT for you if you like the plain tasteless commercial south indian food that you get at a few other restaurants in the neighborhood. This is authentic South Indian food - the best that you can get. The restaurant is just 3 months new and if they maintain the consistency, it will be a top-class south indian restaurant. Authentic South Indian Veg dishes. Place to eat. I like their freshly cooked Pural Boli, so tasty. And their Kalyana sappdu is just unbeatable(Its unlimited), but next time I should go without taking breakfast. Their chillii idly was yet another yemmy dish, my parents liked it very much. Any restaurant I go, my parents love to take cocunut rice, but almost all the places after eating, they used to have indigestion problem. But here surprisingly they were ok, when I visited them next time, I was curious to ask the hotel manager, he explained, the new management was specific about using white cocunut, as opposed to most of the restaurant using brown cocunut. And I know its costly, kudo's to the management to make it as homely food. On the flip side, I can understand they are getting more people, but service needs to be improved. Disappointing Experience with Jain Dosa I recently visited Anand Bhavan and ordered the Jain Ginger Dosa. Despite being told it would take 5-10 minutes, it arrived after a lengthy 25 minutes, devoid of ginger and accompanied only by coconut chutney, resulting in a disappointingly bland dosa. Getting the waiter's attention proved challenging, and my request for sambar was initially met with an apology for its unavailability. However, after expressing my displeasure, suddenly Jain Sambar miraculously appeared. And with a cup of ginger paste that I was expected to smear on to the already made Dosa, which the cook had forgotten to add to my Dosa while cooking. The sole positive note was the waiter conveniently skipping the tipping part during payment, seemingly adept at reading my mind. Overall, a less-than-impressive dining experience. read more

The most decent South Indian restaurant we have been to in the South Bay (and there are a ton). I have heard from friends that their rotis tend to be a little raw but I don't think this is the place to eat North Indian-ish food. Their idlis were light and the exact amount of sour(too sour is irritating and bland is no fun either). The Rava dosa was amazing although the one minus star is for the time they took to make it. They did tell us in the beginning that Rava dosa would take time but they took a hell lot of time and we were very hungry by the end and a little irked too. But when it came our anger subsided. The chutneys were fine too. Sambar was pretty so so but I have yet to find out the best sambar here. All in all would love to come back again. read more

I work right around the corner from this restaurant and I love it. Everytime I go, I am greeted by the friendly staff. The place is clean and efficient. I have never waited more that 5 minutes for my food. I am a vegetarian on a sattvic diet that does not eat garlic or onions and they always accommodate me. I particularly like the tomato uttapam they will do for me instead of an onion one. The Uttapam they serve is giant, sometimes they seem like they are the size of the wonderful dosas they serve! I also love the four types of coconut based chutneys they serve. This place takes me back to the time I spent in Puri in South India. Highly reccomended South Indian (Andhra) restaurant. read more

Fantastic food I have ever had in my 12 years of Bay area life. So many varieties and mouth watering menus. After the new management they showed substantial variance than other restaurants in every aspect. I had fried mini idly for appetizer, schezwan fried rice. My kids loved their french fries, rocket dosa. My husband had cauliflower manchurian, crispy, tasty onion rava dosa. He told me other than India, only here he had such good dosa. South Indian food at its Best!!! been there 4 times now. I love their dosa varieties.My favourite is their onion rava dosa which comes with variety of cutneys and sambar .The halwa was simply amazing. It just melted in my mouth. Other than that, we ordered the Kalyana saapadu (south indian Thali), which came with a variety of things, and was really good. It will be a nice lunch feast. the filter coffee was exactly how chennai coffee should be...small, strong, and fantastic! Room for improvement - restroom can be maintained better and a quite atmosphere inside the restaurant would enhance the ambiance. read more

There are Indian restaurants in every corner of this area but this one stands out. Awesome kalyanasapadu and all the other south Indian specialties. I have coming to this resturent from past few months atlest thrice a week.i am big time meat lover but i have to come to eat Vegge food here on Friday {coz i have typical south food Which dont let me eat meat on friday) Overall the food is great so I prefer to take carry outs and will keep carrying food out.very good customer service. read more

We had a great experience here last weekend. Their Banana Leaf Thali is a must-try, it's a special for a reason. With over a dozen flavorful dishes served the traditional way, it felt like a warm, festive hug. I was also blown away by their Bella Filter Coffee, sweetened with jaggery, and their creamy, sunshine-bright Mango Lassi. I like this place a lot. Good and friendly staff. Consistent high quality taste. They also have a good number of jain options too. Their unlimited "Kalyana Saapadu" is the best option for big eaters. Some of my friends complain that the service is not so good. They are obviously under staffed for full occupancy situations. However in my experience the manager and the staff are very open to feedback and are willing to improvise. Of course this is a great place for vegetarians. read more

I could not stand this food. I consider myself an Indian expert and this food just tasted horrid. It lacked the spice needed and the breads tasted manufactured. Really I can't say enough about how it honestly takes a lot of work to run a good restaurant and this one just isn't for me. Be wary as I had some hair in my food, it looked like nose hairs. Yesterday I had kalyanan sappadu among with my friends. We were three and ordered 3 Kalyanan sappadu. The plates are filled with varities of food and most of them were good. That Big appalam was awesome. order 2 more extra keera vada, appalam, pineapple pudding. The sambar was good. Also tried the podi masala dosa today, it had a decent amount of podi in it (not spicy). It is good, the dosa itself is neither thick nor too crispy - but thin. If you were looking for the texture details :) Next time I'll try the Mysore malli dosa which I missed to notice today ;( My friends also love the dipped mini idli/ Vada or idlis here. Loved the filter coffee in the end, it's a must for me! Tip: morning hours are very busy- plan to wait or visit at an odd hour like I did at 3 pm lol. You might see long queues during busy hours in the morning or evening!
