It's the end of July and a stack of April's issue of Portland Monthly's still in the window, so I kind of figured they were closed. I just hoped that wasn't the case. Change comes for us all, and just because I can remember a time when Esparza's still made chile rellenos on the corner of Ankeny, Tapalaya served up nachos etouffee, Montelupo was a dive bar without a name (some called it Red Flag), Fonda Rosa was the lone margarita place, and the only pizza shop handing out slices was a Pizzacato next to Starbucks that was never open after Chopsticks karaoke, that doesn't mean it all had to stay that way. But I was convinced the families would keep Staccato Gelato around forever. Personally, I loved having a place to come after a movie or dinner where I could pair scoops (was really liking a stracciatella/pistachio combo, with birthday cake/cookies and cream a close second), get an espresso without waiting in line (even City State backs up a bit), or sample the most underrated little donut in town--the star of the coffee beer & donut festival each February. But this one wasn't about me. This was about the families who came here after school or events and made the place feel like its own corner of the neighborhood. It was groups of parents who had a place to corral kids for a bit, packs of pre-teens and teenagers learning to navigate neighborhood stores... and a ton of people running into each other when they were back from various trips during spring, summer, and holiday break. It was a lovely little community, and I'm sure losing that had to hurt. I thank the owners for giving this corner of Portland a decent third place to call its own. We'll get coffee and gelato again, but you gave people a cozy little home that's going to be hard to replicate. read more

As much as I like their gelato they are so darn unpredictable when it comes to openings. This week alone I stopped by twice to get some icecream and both time they have been closed and no sign even let you know when they have open. They should be open according to yelp from noon to 10pm, I was here yesterday at 2pm and today at 3pm. Closed! And that is also stupid since the fifty licks store just a couple blocks down closed for good. Means if they are smart with advertising they could get those customer. Well for that you would need a reliable time frame to be open so that even regular customer not scrapping their nose on your windows. Disappointed so much I'll take two stars off from my regular five star rating for them. read more

How I heard of this place: Visiting friends in Portland, we went for a walk after dinner and they recommended the affogato, as well as gelato at Staccato. Type of cuisine: Gelato and trimmings. Spacious, tall ceilings, mid-century modern couches and plenty of open space, the area inside is great for enjoying your gelato while watching kids play. Place orders at the counter, to the right as you enter. Samples are available and I quite recommend it! Flavors are decadent, some are interesting and new (Thai iced tea!), and truly a feast for the eyes. What I ordered: Thai Iced Tea gelato, a bambino scoop in the tiniest, plastic serving dish. My sister got her favorite: vanilla gelato with decaf espresso (affogato) and our friends each selected their favorites - marionberry and a tropical one. This place was a gem, but the inconsistency has made it impossible to enjoy. The website lists their hours, but the last 3 times I've come here, they've been closed without an explanation. The register is often down as well, so sometimes you can't pay with card. As yummy as the gelato is, I don't think I'll bother to waste my time driving out just to find the place closed down with the lights out during operating hours time & time again. Staccato means cut short or abrupt playing. This gelato spot was excellent, but runs staccato. The gelato melted unusually quick and short. I also thought the flavors were good, yet did not last long. However, I enjoyed this gelato spot especially since there are so few in the great land of Portland. Furthermore, I thought the decor inside was fun and inviting. The donut holes were an excellent touch to a gelato spot. I'm giving this a 3.5 rounded down due to the gelato flavor and quality. I HATE when I get gelato and it tastes freezer burnt - I've never had a problem here, it's always fresh and delicious. Smooth and creamy, melts in your mouth and you leave happy. My friends and I came here for a sweet treat and a love of gelato. My one friend once lived nearby and fondly spoke to Staccato so it was a must on our visit. I am glad he knew of it because I am fairly certain I would have walked past it without realizing it was there. It is a nice location but very subtle in the exterior appearance it could be overlooked. Inside was a variety of flavors, plenty of seating, and one helpful employee. As there were only us and it appeared as though the morning had been quiet the atmosphere was very mellow. The gelato slinger allowed us to sample tastings to our hearts content until we settled down on a couple flavors. I opted for the caramel since it is my favorite and I was not disappointed. We have visited this place quite often from the time they opened until recently. My daughter's first date with her fiancé was at Staccato. She wanted to have them cater their wedding so she could share their product with everyone they knows (yes they do cater). When I called to inquire, I was told to email with the information to get a quote. 6 weeks later, I have not received a response. I called the store and left a message, with my name and wedding information, two weeks ago but no response have. Tacky business ethics..... The company is so flush with money that they're not interested in getting back to anybody, even with a courtesy call of "cannot accomodate". They've lost all of our family's business from now on. 50 Licks Ice Cream gets to be the treat caterer instead. They seem happy to help. read more

I've been here a few times and find it to be pretty solid. I like the broad range of flavors they have from traditional ones like lemon to fun ones like basil. I appreciate that they wash and reuse everything! Sometimes, I find some of their flavors overly sweet, but now I just make sure to try them first to figure out what I'd want. Nice little gelato spot local to me. I wouldn't say it's the most authentic gelato but it's still pretty good. They have a lot of flavors here but they only allow you to sample two (at least when I went). I have no reason to give them anything less than five stars. Nothing was off. The place is clean, and there was nothing out of place. They had plenty of comfortable seating. The server was nice and patient with us, and answered our questions with a simple. We never felt rushed by him when a line started building up behind us. Of course Gelato is Vegan, and the two samples that I tried were excellent. I tried the lemon flavor which was very good, but to my surprise, the chocolate flavor was even better. It had not artificial anything. It was nice knowing that what I am eating is not slowly killing me. The prices were reasonable for what you get. After a really good sandwich, I had to walk it off and somehow ended up eating fresh gelato. My gosh did I find a good place. Gelato that is made in house and the flavors vary all the time. Who makes rhubarb? They do. They had an incredible pistachio, a salted caramel and several other flavors that looked amazing. The sizes are good with only $3.00 for two small scoops or $3.75 for three and a four scoop option, waffle cones or sundaes. They can even do gelato cakes, if you order in advance. I opted for chocolate, pistachio and key lime. The key lime had graham cracker crumbles and just a great lime flavor to it. The chocolate was rich, dark and creamy. The pistachio reminded me of tortoni desserts I used to eat growing up going to the Italian restaurants. Yes, I know tortonis are almond flavor but that is what it brought me back to. It was all delicious and satisfying. I now have yet another place I want to take my kiddo to when she comes for the summer. With a small grouping of good restaurants in the immediate area, this is a great place to end up after a good meal at Tabla, City State or Beaulahland. They offer over one hundred rotating flavors of gelato and sorbets and happily let you have a taste of this and that, such as Drunk Monkey (banana and caramel), Orange Creamsicle (the name says it all), or Hedgehog (chocolate and coconut).
