Not long ago I reviewed the "new" Cassidy's, comparing it with the other three primary coffee shops in Elk Grove, Mike's Original Diner and the Stagecoach. At the time I pointed out that my comparison wasn't entirely fair because I hadn't been to the Stagecoach in quite a while. Since I'm constantly striving to walk the righteous path, I've now completed the trifecta by visiting the Stagecoach. Here's what I found: Ambiance: The Stagecoach is by far the oldest of the three eateries, and it shows. The furnishings are scarred, the carpet is a bit threadbare in spots and the paint is getting a little dingy. When it comes to cutesy cowboy stuff on the walls, however, Stagecoach has Cassidy's beat hands down...for whatever that might be worth. Service: I arrived after the breakfast rush (about 9:30) and was seated after only a few minutes wait. My server arrived promptly to take my drink order, which also arrived promptly. My order was taken without delay and the kitchen turned my order out correctly within a reasonable time. My only complaint is that all of this was accomplished without so much as a smile or a friendly word. Is a warm fuzzy feeling necessary to enjoying one's breakfast? No, I suppose not. On the other hand, it is nice to feel welcome and appreciated. Food: There are a few things in life that never change and the Stagecoach menu is one of them. At least, if there were any changes made during the past year or so, I couldn't spot them. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing any significant menu changes during the twenty or so years I've been patronizing the joint. The menu offers typical coffee shop faire cowboyed up with western lingo. Being hungry and figuring that my Stagecoach breakfast would have to keep me going until dinner, I ordered the Farmer's Breakfast, which consists of three (very small) eggs, two (spicy) sausage links, two strips of bacon, a small piece of ham, hashbrowns, and a choice of toast or a homemade biscuit. Everything was prepared to my liking, with the exception of the eggs, which were a little over done for "over medium," and the biscuit, which while large, was dry. Some jelly or jam would have improved the situation, but there was none on the table--not even any of those little Knott's Berry Farm restaurant packs. Since my server wasn't immediately available to resolve the problem, I left most of my biscuit in its basket. Otherwise, the meal was acceptable. Value: Stagecoach prices seem on a par with Mike's and Cassidy's, and since the food was as good, if not a little better, than what's served at the other two places, I would say that Stagecoach offers competitive value for your dollar. I don't go to coffee shops expecting a gourmet meal, so I've never been really disappointed at any of the Elk Grovian examples of this traditional type of eatery. That being said, I'll stick by my statement that there's not much to choose between the three. I will probably continue frequenting Mike's simply because it's the closest and because I prefer Fabulous Fifties décor over Cowboy Cute. Yeeeeha! read more

This morning was my second visit to Stagecoach and it was great! My mom and I stopped in for breakfast at around 9 and there was a short 10 minute wait but they got extremely busy as soon as we were seated. They have a huge menu and a lot of different options. Everything from omelets and benedict to waffles and traditional breakfast platters. My mom got the mushroom, spinach, bell pepper and cheese omelet and I got the stagecoach scramble and both dishes were absolutely delicious! Be warned, the portions are HUGE. Both our meals came with a choice of a biscuit, muffin or toast. I got a biscuit (which really means 2 HUGE biscuits btw) and my mom got a coconut pineapple muffin which was AMAZING! I highly recommend the muffin if they are offering it. Our server was so sweet and helpful! She was very on top of our coffee refills which was very appreciated. All in all, their food is delicious, the ambiance is homey and warm and the service is outstanding. Definitely worth checking out! read more

We were craving some simple comfort food the other night when we came across this no-frills, family-owned establishment. The service was "down-home" friendly right off the bat! After a tasty appetizer of garlic bread, fried zucchini and cheese fries, I dove into the house special: chicken-fried steak. GOOOOD GOD it was tasty! Scrumptious meat with delicious and light breading--very nice!! I noticed a meticulous attention to detail here---from the crispness of the lettuce to the perfect warmth of the gravy--an attention to detail usually reserved for fine, high-end dining. Stagecoach serves all manner of American favorites, from New York Steak and Shrimp to open-face Turkey sandwiches. All for very reasonable ($8-$15) prices. I'll be returning soon. read more

I like this place and sometimes I don't. Service is not great. Takes a long time once sat for a waitress to serve you or acknowledge you. I hate that. There are never any apologies either. Food is good. Usually order breakfast. Good portion sizes. Bacon usually is old and not fresh. Have had to have them remake numerous times. When cooked to order it is yummy. Hostess staff at front counter are always friendly and efficient at seating and ringing you up when done. We'll be back just wish service was better! read more

This place is only open for breakfast and lunch. With that being said, the breakfast is delicious and lunch isn't bad either. You get enough food so you won't leave hungry. The price isn't bad for the amount of food you get. Definitely worth a try, way better than Denny's or IHOP. read more

Let me start by saying that we only do breakfast at the Stagecoach. I have no idea what their lunches and dinners are like. My husband likes the chicken friend steak with eggs. I have had it once and it is HUGE but so delicious. My preference is the omlettes. There are about 20 combinations to choose from and if you can't find it exactly the way you want it, there is a huge list of add ons that you can put in to make it exactly the way you want it. I enjoy the bacon, cheese and avocado. The 3 x 3 is also a good choice (3 meats and 3 cheeses). The potatoes that come with most breakfasts have a bit of crunch coat to the outside. If you like your potatoes crispy, tell them so. If you order coffee, it comes in a bottomless pot. There can be a wait on the weekends, but a little known secret is that you can call in ahead of time. Just be very certain about how long it will take you to get to the restaurant because they will not hold your table for an infinite amount of time. read more

If you're looking for Chef Ramsey, you won't find him here. But if you're looking for the best country breakfast in Elk Grove, this is it. By far the best breakfast meats in town; like they came from a local butcher than chain frozen delivery truck. Fresh biscuits and muffins, country gravy...it is all good. Add in friendly staff and fast service, this family-owned restaurant is a nice blast from the past. Still love this place after two decades. read more

The service here is a little slow especially when there was only a couple other guests. However our waitress, though a little quiet was very polite and sweet. The food here was ok, nothing special. My friend got the chicken fried steak. The batter was nice and flakey but the meat was extremely dry and chewy. It tastes like old meat that had been refrigerated. None of the food was hot, only warm and the became cold really fast. I got the salmon and mashed potatoes. The salmon was chewy but it was ok. And the potatoes were clumpy and bland. The French fries and the minestrone in my opinion were the best things they had to offer. The people were sweet but the food was just bland and mehh. Haven't been here in years for breakfast. Disappointed. Maybe the hostess was having a bad day, but her attitude was heavy in the air. It was not terribly busy when we arrived. The only two people standing in the entry and while waitresses and busboys saw us, not one could acknowledge or say someone will be by. So we waited and waited. Eventually the hostess did show us to a table. Asked if we wanted any coffee and never brought it. Waitress was pleasant enough. Coffee was weak, though they give you a carafe. I ordered eggs benedict and it was awful. My companion ordered an omelette and said it was so dry she could only eat half. They give you a crazy amount of potatoes and even that wasn't very good. Upon checkout, the hostess was just as attitudinal as when we arrived. One upon a time this used to be a decent place, but I'd rather save a considerable amount and go 100 yds over to Denny's, where at least they'll tell you they'll be right with you. I guess old habits must be hard to die because there were people - lots of them - waiting in the entry and looking for someone to help them. read more

This place has been around forever, and it a local favorite for breakfast. Always expect a wait on the weekend mornings, but I have never waited an unreasonable amount of time (20 minutes +). The staff has always been friendly, and the service is usually fast. If you're a meat & potatoes type of eater, this is your place!!! The breakfast potatoes are yummy, but if you're a hash browns lover you'll be in for a disappointment since they don't offer it on their menu. I always have a hard time deciding what I want to eat. One of my favorites are the buttermilk pancakes, and they are huge! The servings are huge too! read more

Worst breakfast in Elk Grove! Looks like it might be a charming western diner, seemed pricey for that type of place but when the food arrived, the corners that were cut were very apparent. I'm not sure how you can mess up breakfast but this place succeeded in doing so. Fruit was an option, we ordered it, and got a small bowl with a half of a canned pear and a half of a peach. The ham, bacon and sausage were poor quality and horrible tasting, rubbery and super salty. Ugh really awful! I don't usually complain but for the $46 bill the food was horrendous. Never again! My order was wrong but I was starved and the waitress was MIA so I just ate it anyway. It took another good 10 minutes waiting for the bill to come too. I was pretty pissed off at this point. You go to a place like this for a good, cheap, country breakfast. The problem is the prices aren't cheap to match its dated, run down decor. The place is fairly popular so you wonder why they aren't putting any of their profits towards upgrades. Most of everything in the place is worn out, dingy and needs to be replaced. The carpet is filthy. The whole place didn't feel clean. I had the country skillet. It was good, but for $12 it better be. This place is clearly only successful because there are no good places for breakfast in Elk Grove. If they had any competition at all this place would go out of business. read more

The spinach bacon mushroom Swiss cheese omelet had a square of processed Swiss cheese slabbed on top. Classy. Sat back near the kitchen and watched as the kitchen staff was eating a piece of toast while put more toast in toaster with an ungloved hand. Don't they have a break room for staff? I've been coming here for a few years and I always get the same thing--- the portions are big and everything is always tasty. I almost always get the mushroom, onion and bell pepper omelette as I'm not a fan of meat omelettes. Their house potatoes are delicious and always has that crunch on the outside... If you order toast, ask for butter on the side because they are EXTREMELY generous when they butter your toast and it's overwhelming. My husband got the chicken fried steak and eggs. I had a piece and it was delicous! He also had grits with his meal and he said it was just okay. Finally a great little breakfast joint that I don't have to drive to a small town for! There was about a 15 minute wait for a table - long enough to know you're waiting for something good but not so long you have to gnaw your own arm off for an appetizer. The ambiance is underwhelming, like a good greasy spoon should be. They play country music and have a western decor. The booths aren't really comfortable, but they aren't uncomfortable either. Really though, who cares about that? Let's get to the breakfast!! I had an omelette. They were totally cool about letting me substitute ingredients, which earns a star all by itself. The potatoes were awesome - crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The biscuit I got in lieu of toast was A-FREAKING-AMAZING. I think you could make a meal just out of those delicious biscuits. Still, I left knowing I made an epic mistake - not getting the chicken fried steak. My fiance ordered this and graciously shared, and OMG. OMG. Seriously, if you are a chicken fried steak kind of person (or even if you're not), EAT THIS! I almost had a When Harry Met Sally moment over this rich and delicious piece of fried heaven. If my arteries (and pants) could afford it, I would eat this every single day! Driving by and feeling hungry, my mom and I stopped in for a quick breakfast. Upon walking in we were seated right away and had coffee at our table side immediately. Pretty big selection of breakfast choices. I opted to forgo my normal eggs Benedict order for a chicken fried steak. Let me tell you what....that was HUGE!! My mom ordered the same thing. We agreed once we saw the size of the order we could have easily shared this plate and still been stuffed. The meat is huge, and served with two eggs, potatoes and biscuit or toast. The waitress also brought us extra sausage gravy to put on our biscuit. The meal was very good. A little pricey, but for how much you get it was worth the amount. I had high hopes for this restaurant based on ratings and a friend who had eaten there. I didn't realize she had only gone there once in the 10 years she's lived in Elk Grove until after we ate there. Now I know why. Pros: Location(plenty of parking) Cozy/decor Bacon Cons: Overpriced for the food served Scrambled eggs that looked flat (like an omelet). Good scrambled eggs are fluffy and flavorful. Bland potatoes Pancake syrup had an after taste Service: Asking for more butter but being told by the server ( who gave us a "look")that the toast was "sufficiently" buttered already.... The butter was for the pancakes...Asking for some orange jelly and being brought one packet. One. To her credit the server did bring us the butter we asked for but we only saw her once after she brought the butter and jelly ( to bring us the bill). We had never been here so we decided to try it. The staff is nice but I was NOT happy with the food at all. We went to Stagecoach and we were STARVING. The portions were a good size but way too pricey for me. The homefried potatoes were disgusting and tasteless($3.95!). Their pancakes were good, the scrambled egg was good, bacon was meh and so was the sausage.Thier raspberry tea was sooooo gross. They make it with the syrup and put way too much ice in the cup to be able to stir it in. The water cup they gave me was the size of my 10 month old son's sippy cup! This place has been in Elk Grove for many years. We were in town yesterday and decided to stop in. It's been at least 15 years since I've been here. It was pretty busy and we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. They seated us and promptly came back for our orders. I got the standard breakfast(eggs, bacon and potatoes) and it was really yummy! My son ordered pancakes and they were really good too. He was eating them and then made a weird face...he found a couple of diced onions mixed in his pancakes...yuck! My son hates onions so that ruined his meal. We ordered a cinnamon roll to go and it was huge! Later that evening we warmed it up and I tasted the icing and tasted onion. Then we found 3 diced onions in the icing! That was disgusting!!! I don't know who's cutting onions in the kitchen but they seemed to make it in everything we ordered. We will go back because it is a nice ma and pa type restaurant and they have great food! Started with the clam chowder. Tastes more like country gravy with clam in it. Crackers were stale. Had the ranchers scramble which consists of onion ground beef spinach mushroom and cheese. Egg was not fluffy like most other eateries and somewhat watery, probably from the spinach. Ground beef added substinence but was unflavored. Side of fruit was a half slice of pear and a half slice of peach, both of which from a can. Quite disappointed with the fruit. Biscuit and gravy was far from stellar. Biscuit has the texture of cornbread, but without the corn flavor. Gravy tastes like the powder stuff that you add water to, without any meat or chunks in it. Only good part, service is good and friendly. The environment is very comfortable and laid back. Prices are reasonable, but will not be worth returning to. read more

First things first, I want to give a shout out to one on my favorite servers here. Keelie is amazing, efficient, nice, old school and the only server I have serve us at this restaurant. I have been coming here since I was a kid and the only thing that has prevented my family and I from going elsewhere is her. I also just recently found out that this her 2nd job and she is a single mother of 3. I have seen her pick up customers tabs with her own tips right out of her pocket and tell them that another customer has paid their bill and she is one of the few servers that can handle a full house alone and still smile at 6am. Now on to the rest. This restaurants food and service has been in decline for the last several years and today has made my family and I seriously consider finding a new family breakfast spot. We sat in the back and were able to see the cooks and servers in the back of the house and it was absurd. One of the cooks was on his phone and then kept dancing and joking around, the other cook ignored the servers when they were asking for things. My server asked for our bacon twice and gravy 4 times before she got it. My husband got his food and the rest of us waited another 10min for the rest of our order. Keelie appologized multiple times and said they were a little behind and tried to make things better, but we saw everything and felt horrible for her and the male server that could only wait there for the cooks to get there $hit together. We would have left if it wasn't for our server. We didn't want to do that to her. She apologized again and said that they would pick up our meal because we come every weekend, but I saw her later pay our bill at the register. She is amazing and we left her a very substantial tip for caring and showing us how much she appreciated our patronage. The owners apparently do not. I asked where the owner was because we hadn't seen her months and found out that her daughter recently took over with her husband. Then I knew what was going on. This is the same waitress that always seemed to call in sick (that was the response given to us and other customers that asked where the usual server was on friday mornings), open up late because she got there late and even painted her nails in the back while talking on the phone last year. Yes, you heard me correctly. After my husband and I witnessed that, we started it coming on Sundays when Keelie was there and we knew the service was going to be good. Moral of the story: Keelie you are a godsend Owners you need a wake up call before you lose your customers to Ihop Customers ask for Keelie or the male server that is there on weekends and watch the hostesses because they dense read more

so, i decided to venture to the e gizzy for the breakfast. the seater and staff seemed pretty inexpieranced as far as working the resturant biz. it was quite a wait...and the place is pretty small. there were lots of tables open but they didnt catch on for like 20 minutes...it was actually kinda comical. anyways, we got seated...and luckly away from this wierd couple that kept eyeballin' me and my girl. the waitress was on it...and on the drinks so that was a plus. i had an omelette which was decent...grit's that were obviously from a box...and an english muffin...overall it was good. i was impressed i could actually get grits...even if they were from a box. price was iffy...not really good, but not over priced. if your used to bomb breakfast spots...this really isnt one of them...but it's a decent place to get some breakfast that's not denny's if your in the grove. read more

Went to stagecoach today and must say this place was nothing to write home about! We were seat pretty quickly, handed menus and waters and told our waiter will be over. Then are server took 10-15 mins to come greet us and take our order. I got the tuna melt and my friend got the French toast. Our waitress then disappeared for another 15 mins never filling up our waters or coffee or even to come by to check on us. She then brought our food out and then filled our waters and coffee. The tuna melt was ok not great not the worst. The French toast was cooked well but lacked seasoning and the syrup tasted cheap. Also I had to flag down our waitress 15 mins later to get our check. I will be back to try their biscuits (they looked great) and some eggs but hope the services is better this time! read more

I like the local, western, homey feel of this restaurant. They have 23 different kinds of omelettes. Everytime I come, there are a bunch of old people and I usually judge a restaurant on how many old people are there. Why? They know good food and know when it's a good bang for their buck. I ordered a simple breakfast, bacon and eggs with home fries. Everything came out as ordered and expected. I also ordered the biscuit, which were very good. StageCoach has a "make yourself at home" feel. Located behind chase bank, kind of hard to notice when driving down Elk Grove blvd. They give just the right amount of food for your buck. French Toast combo does the job for me. Service is good, not great but they get the job done. read more

Tried this place out for the first time today for brunch. And I saw good and bad reviews about this place, but the food pictures brought us in to try it out anyway. We'll I'm glad we did because we got greeted and seated within a few minutes. And our food came out quick. The atmosphere is a calm homey environment and it wasn't slammed but there was a good amount of customers all around. Hostess was friendly, the waitress came and made sure we got refills on our drinks. The food was delicious and the portions were huge. I had a stagecoach skillet and my husband had a country fried steak. All in all i'd definitely come back again. read more
