3.5 Stars. Starling Diner is a popular local breakfast spot nestled in a cute residential neighborhood in Long Beach. The wait to be seated was pretty long, about 50 minutes. My friend and I actually walked around the neighborhood for a bit to occupy our time until our table was ready, which was nice since as I mentioned it really is a cute residential area. I wouldn't say their menu was particularly creative or special, but service was friendly and attentive and the food was good. I had ordered the Soyrizo scramble with added Avocado and a mimosa. The mimosa was okay and the scramble was good, though not something I feel the need to return and go through another long wait for. Street parking was easy, even on a weekend. read more

The place is pretty cute, although it is a bit small so during peak hours you will probably need to wait (we only waited like 10 minutes). The servers are nothing special but pretty nice overall. We ordered the berry french toast and eggs Benjamin, both of which were pretty alright. The French toast comes with baguette type of bread which is unique: not necessarily better than the average French toast though. The eggs Benjamin was also nothing special but still pretty good: the eggs were well cooked and such, it was just a bit of a small portion. read more

The atmosphere was a little more hippy/yuppy/California than what I prefer but I guess that's to be expected considering where it is. I'm a hillbilly from the eastern part of the country. The food was good and the service was excellent. You can get crab cakes with eggs, crab cakes in a salad, and crab cakes in a hoagie but you cannot get just crab cakes. What's up with that? read more

Food was absolutely delicious. French toast is probably the best I've ever had. Bacon was amazing. Thick, crunchy and just all delicious.. We brought home scones to try later and those did not disappoint. The lemon curd on them was so good! We will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for yumminess! Place is a little small but they're quick and food is out quick. It's almost like being at someone's home. Wait staff was really quick bringing out food and refilling coffee. I have been coming to this place for about 10 years. Went for an occasional breakfast this morning as we always do with our dog and we got kicked out after ordering food because we had our dog with us while sitting outside. Our dog is a service dog and the server took a picture of the documents to send to the owner and he literally refused us service. With a multitude of choices for breakfast restaurants in Long Beach that all allow dogs, for them to say no to even service animals is ridiculous! This is the last time that we ever choose Starling Diner. The way we were treated was unacceptable and downright disrespectful. This place has clearly lost touch with its loyal customers. read more

First, my only complaint, this place is noisy. If you don't like loud music and louder talking - pass. Otherwise, it's a great place. I've loved both times I've eaten here. I can't remember what it's called, but I got the country wrap or something... eggs on a tortilla with country gravy. Sooo good. Came with some kind of salad on the side which was nice and fresh. And everyone else I was with really enjoyed their meals. Prices seem quite reasonable for the quality of the food. I'd love to try more of the menu. read more

What a cute little gem! This cafe is nestled in a beautiful historic neighborhood with indoor and outdoor seating. The service of the staff was incredibly friendly and quick (without making us feel rushed at all)! I was able to enjoy conversation with my friend and her daughter. Even every other guest was equally as sweet and it made the entire place feel so inviting. I had the Starling Diner scramble with the Caf Au Lait and it was seriously so good - I will be back soon as I'm now drooling over their potatoes too! read more

Great food but be aware that on Friday morning from 8-10 across the street is no parking for street cleaning it cost me 70 bucks to learn that. Signs are few and far between. It's no parking on the same side of the street on Thursday morning 8-10 great service. Nice to sit outside on the sidewalk. read more

This place deserves 10/5 rating! One of the best experiences. Stayed in Long Beach for the weekend and had breakfast here 2 days in a row. Everything we tried was phenomenal. Food is great and the diner itself is very cozy. It does get a little loud, but does not dostract from the food. Their chicken sausage is one of my favorite sides. Their scrambles are great, potatoes are seasoned well, and their scones pack a great lemon flavor that isn't overwhelming. read more

This is breakfast and brunch place with wonderful home-like ambience, and attentive staff. It's off the beaten path, which adds its own charm to it. The roasted mushroom omelette with goat cheese and spinach is to die for, and little scones with orange peel spread are absolutely delicious. On weekend mornings however, prepare to wait in line. read more

Came on Sunday Jan 5th at 2:20 just getting into town from San Diego to visit our daughter.I know it was 40 minutes before closing but, it was 40 minutes from closing ! I LOVE LONG BEACH the vibe, the retro feel, the people and love supporting small independent business.We were seated immediately( only 3 other parties present) Asking for a chai latte & was told the machine was cleaned and off.This is 40 minutes before closing.I understand trying to clean what you can before closing but, at the customers expense?I think not.The food was marginal at best.My husband isn't very picky and he didn't like the food.Also, the rather heavy set manager (?) was seated in a booth waiting for us to leave..... This diner was recommended by my hair stylist last month and we've eaten there 5 times since then. Food is pretty good especially the salmon & loux love the the fresh toast, the coffee taste is rich and very good, unfortunately I've only been served warm coffee. Came on a Sunday for brunch, and I was so pleased with how quick it was to be seated! Despite there being a long list, the servers and host were quick to seat us. The food was incredible! I found this place on yelp and I brought my father and brother here for Father's Day maybe two years ago. this has became our new go to spa as like a treat ourselves. we've brought so many family and friends because the French toast are to die for that's what we recommend the most. As my son says, 10 out of 10 and I can't agree more. You have to get the breakfast bruschetta as a starter. The presentation is fantastic and the flavor of the berries, light toasted fresh bread and mascarpone cheese all drizzled with a touch of honey is heaven. It's hidden in a neighborhood so don't think your lost driving there the 1st time. The pork sandwich with chimichurri sauce is made in house and to die for. I was visiting my friend in LB for brunch and we decided on Starling Diner. The wait took over 1.5 hours for outdoor seating since tables were very limited, but thank god we had a lot to catch up on. We both order a premium mimosa (one with blueberry pomegranate and the other with pear) and the blue crab cake & scrambled egg whites. The flavored mimosas were super refreshing and garnished with a cute orchid. The two blue crab cakes were super flavorful and tasted great with the aioli. Micro greens were a nice touch. I love bread so the three slices of baguette really made my day. Super shook that they were soft rather than hard because baguettes are usually really dry and hard to eat. I highly recommend dining here. Both food and service were excellent! read more

Okay polenta talk aside, you MUST get the scones. Yes, just like others have mentioned in the reviews; get the scones. They come so steamy and holy hold my pearls, that first bite will make you roll your eyes back. Along with the scones they bring out the lemon curd and jam. Staple to come here according to my boyfriend! Came on a Sunday and it was packed! But only waited 10-15 mins for a table! Love the vibe! French inspired I think and felt "home-y" to me. Ordered the peach french toast! Delicious! Never tried french toast as a baguette before, unique! The bread was nice and crispy and they placed plenty of peaches on top! Comes with 2 baguettes, i assumed cut in half. Oh did i mention inside the bread is cream cheese, goodness! The cheeseburger scramble was a little disappointing tho. Went here for lunch with two friends. Service was immediate, friendly and attentive. Special shout out to Alfredo, our waiter! Friendly, fast and really wants his customers to be happy! We had salmon, pot roast sandwich, slow cooked pork sandwich, and two of us got in house made split pea soup. One friend took home beautiful, fragrant just baked scones to his wife. We all had coffee and agree it's especially delicious! Such ample portions that I was full from the soup! Took a couple of bites of the incredible pot roast and brought it home for dinner tonite.! Visiting Long Beach & planned on going out to breakfast by the shore but wasn't aware it was the LB Marathon Day. After multiple detours stumbled on Starling Diner & elected to try it as we were really hungry. Luckiest happenstance we've had in a long time. Very cute location, packed with locals (young professionals & old geezers like me). Few tables outside to enjoy the great SoCal morning weather & diner dining inside. A mix of decor from photos when the original place opened 100yrs ago thru today. Clean & comfortable with cheerful, prompt, courteous service - a really family operation feel about it. Inside is a little noisy driven by the demographic of customers, energetic. It was a Sunday morning and we waited about 15 min for a table. It was well worth it - now why you really read this: Exceptional food. We asked for recommendations from our excellent server & a couple regulars. Settled on a slow roasted pork breakfast scramble & an apple stuffed French toast. My wife & I split them both - had PLENTY to eat (actually couldn't finish it all despite giving it our best effort it was so good) & thoroughly enjoyed the sweet & savory combination! Seasoned breakfast potatoes were crispy outside soft centered, perfectly seasoned. The scramble of slow roasted pork, caramelized onions & eggs - SO FLAVORFUL. The stuffed French Toast is to die for. Had brunch a few days ago to catch up with a few friends and truly enjoyed our visit! The restaurant is cozy and relaxing, and the food was prompt and delicious! Found this place by accident and fell in love with it! Brought my mom for breakfast and just a few days letter had to bring my boyfriend to try it out ! The food is amazing and so is the service and overall vibe ! It's in the middle of a residential neighborhood but has plenty of parking . Didn't have to wait at all either time. They get your food to you so fast and it's all been so delicious and aesthetically pleasing thank you all for such an enjoyable experience! What vegan options are there?

They have a granola, or you can order a lot of the salads without cheese or meat on it. Not a ton of options, but there's still ways to work around it.

Do you really have vegan options? The last comment about vegan options was three months ago it stated there were no vegan options but the yelp pg says there are. I will be there in April with a group of friends so just want to know my options?

We ended up ordering the fondue for the app (24.00) which comes with bite size pieces of bread and diced apples. It was ok, a little too runny and had an interesting hint of beer flavor. Next up we both ordered the brie & prosciutto sandwich which came with a side of au gratin and greens. The sandwich was excellent but the potatoes were cold. We ended our meal sharing creme brulee for dessert. It was good but also served cold. Total bill incl tip: 163.00 bucks (double ouch)! Overall, meal and service was good, but I would forego the wine on a future visit as it was way overpriced for the brand we got as well as the cheese fondue. Will definitely be back though. Very comfy and charming atmosphere.

Really good food, cute atmosphere, but the service needs a little help I have to say, I really enjoyed the food at Starling Diner! We came here because we wanted something a little quieter and away from the crowds, and it was absolutely perfect for that. We came closer to closing, so the restaurant was about half full, and the ambiance was relaxed, cozy, and really cute. I ordered the Breakfast Bundle, which I had to ask about because I wasn't quite sure what it was. It's essentially a modern breakfast burrito -- mashed potatoes, eggs and bacon, topped with gravy, with a side salad. And honestly? It was delicious! My bestie ordered the Cheeseburger Scramble, which was also fantastic. Of course, we sampled each other's plates, and both dishes were winners. Where I think they could use a little help is on the service side. The owner appeared to be handling the waitstaff duties himself, and he seemed pretty overwhelmed and a little out of breath/disheveled. We waited quite a while for our drinks to be refreshed, and I think having another person helping with the tables would make a big difference. One little FYI: we were charged $24 for iced tea refills. My bestie was essentially using the same drink cup for her refills, so honestly, I understand charging for it -- but I do think it would be good form to let customers know that refills are charged separately. A quick heads-up would avoid any surprise when the bill arrives. I also think the menu could do a better job explaining what the "Breakfast Bundle" actually is. I had to ask, and considering the owner was already juggling a lot, having those details clearly listed would be one less question for him to answer. Overall, though, I would absolutely come back. The food was genuinely good, the atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for, and I think with a little additional help on the service side and clearer menu information, this place could really shine. We had a party of 12 and we thought we give this restaurant a shot but ofcourse the service sucked ass and the food was horroblly prepared and extremly overpriced. Bad mistake. Large Orange juice was about 9oz and over $5.95. Ouch! Watered down OJ for 6 bucks? No thanks! Please ...RIP OFFFFFF Blue crab cakes and eggs Should be called BLUECRAP CAKE TASTED LIKE CRAPPY for over($15) Roasted pork and egg scramble ($10). Everything tasted like frozen canned food this place should be SHUT DOWN for being overpriced and lousy on food.............. ALL my colleagues ordered all different items from menu and we left all of it untouched and we even paid the money to get the table clear the food because it smelled aweful....The Roasted pork was tough and it made 4 people sick. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but I just cant bring myself to do it. I came here with the boyfriend for a cute brunch date and we both absolutely loved the food. I got the eggs benedict, and my boyfriend got the turkey breast sandwich. We split both so I'll be reviewing both dishes. First the Turkey Sandwich... The bread - Delicious baguette, fresh, crunchy, and did I say delicious? The sauce - cranberry, tangy, went excellent with the turkey. The soup - (came with the sandwich) Lentil, made my stomach happy. 5 stars in each category, except for size. They gave us these 2 little pieces of baguette that maybe could have fed my cat. The serving portion was tiny! Now for the eggs benedict. Good eggs benedict, cooked correctly, good spinach, good potatoes and it also came with a few piece of baguette. I had the same issues with the benedict as I had with the turkey sandwich...it was teeny! My boyfriend finished his benedict in 2 bites..seriously....2 bites! Oh and they dont put bread on the bottom of the benedict, it comes on the side..very annoying in my opinion. All in all it was really good food. The restaurant is small, cute and cozy and it had a pretty good crowed. The service was good, no complaints there. The only issue I have with this place is the serving size. read more

Had the opportunity to eat what some would call brunch here, and all in all, I was impressed. Someone in my group ordered apple french toast which I was allowed to sample. Instead of normal bread they used some sort of a brioche which I think was a good move on their part. Now, did using a brioche come off as pretentious? Yes, yes it did. But was it delicious? Indeed it was. For me personally I had a BLT which is really hard to screw up. As a result, I would've been surprised if my sandwich came out poorly - but it didn't. The BLT was actually well executed. Although not on a brioche bun, the ingredients within the sandwich were well organized and distributed properly. Moreover, they put a garlic aioli on it, which I appreciated. I mean who doesn't like a good aioli... am I right? The only gripe I had about the place is that the dining area was remarkably loud - which I found distracting while I was eating my sandwich. Based on the dimensions of the place it would seem that there isn't much that can be done about the noise level. However a star must come off nontheless. Additionally, the price for what we ordered was fair and the help was enthusiastic. I recommend giving the place a try if you are hungry and hate peace and quite. read more

I picked up a copy of the district's "Best Best of Long Beach Ever" and flipped to the dining section as I was starving, in a hurry and on a tight budget. I entered an adorable establishment where the servers let me know that I could sit "wherever I like" - how refreshing! I grabbed a menu off the stand in front of me and chose a cozy table for one. I've never had polenta anything before, but my server informed me that the breakfast polenta is the perfect dish for a rainy day. While I waited for my food, I noticed a variety of magazines that I never find the time to read or purchase. Over a good strong cup of coffee (the way I measure a breakfast establishment: A+ at Starling) I realized I had a good hour before class after all, and enjoyed a moment to breathe. The Breakfast Polenta was divine. My server kept my coffee cup full. I got to read Adbusters. Who can complain? The bill didn't even hit ten bucks and it's the best breakfast I've had in weeks. Poor service. Mediocre food. Our peach french toast had canned peaches even though they're in season. The roast beef hash looked like fried dog food, plopped out of the can onto powdered scrambled eggs. I never knew that potatoes could be so dried out yet undercooked and hard. No one ever came back to check to see if we needed anything until we were done eating. Our plates sat in front of us for several minutes until the busser came over to take them. He was the only attentive person after we ordered and was very friendly. We asked for the check and the guy who Im assuming was management continued to take the order for 3 other tables before bringing it. When we mentioned that no one ever checked on us, he said that we could've waved at them. No apology, just a "Thank you. We will take that into consideration." Whoa, Starling Diner is beyond delicious, and the ambiance is everything! Tucked away in a charming residential area of Long Beach, this cute little diner is worth seeking out. Parking is street-only, but don't worry--finding a spot isn't too difficult. The service was great, and the Irish coffee was phenomenal. It woke me up and put hair on my chest at the same time--exactly what I needed for a girl's breakfast! The blue crab cakes and eggs were beyond amazing. But the real showstopper was the breakfast polenta. It's not your run-of-the-mill breakfast dish--slightly sweet with the freshest berries on top, served at a soothing warm temperature. I rarely get up in time for breakfast on days that do not require a visit to the office. This place is actually worth the wake up and wait. The location is quaint and the decor is nice. I probably would not have gone here if it were not compared to a San Fran restaurant by a few co workers of mine. First of all the coffee is very good. The meals we had were all fresh and smartly prepared with true care for the flavors and freshness. The stuffed toast is top five on my list of breakfast items I have ever had out for breakfast. If they could not seemed so rushed and overwhelmed it would be a five star rating. The service was good but the atmosphere felt like everyone was a moment away for losing it. Can't go wrong with The Classic breakfast which includes Applewood smoked bacon, eggs, potatoes and french bread. Great way to start the day. Affordable, too. If you're eating with one of more people for breakfast, then order up a basket of scones. They make them fresh. Very soft and delicious. Can't go wrong. I've never had a scone so tasty, they're significantly better than the standard coffee shop or Starbucks scone that you're used to. On weekends arrive before 9:30am to avoid a potentially long wait for a table. Also, it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood, so be cool and respectful when walking to and from your car. Also, they're closed on Mondays, and tend to close down the first two weeks after New Year's, so keep that in mind. Great vibes here. read more

I recently ordered from this restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience has been consistently disappointing. For the second time, items were missing from my order. When I called to address the issue, I was informed they didn't have the product, yet I was still charged. To make matters worse, my food arrived freezing, despite being just a few blocks away. The manager's response to my concerns was shockingly rude, to the extent that if he were my employee, I would have considered termination for such disrespectful communication with a customer. No one bothered to inform me about the unavailability of items. Regrettably, this experience has led me to the decision to no longer support this restaurant. I recently visited Starling Diner with a friend, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Parking was a breeze, and there was plenty of indoor seating as well as a few tables outside. Despite being busy, we put our names down and were seated in less than 10 minutes. The menu selection is excellent, with a variety of tempting options. We ordered the breakfast bruschetta, smoked salmon and capers crostinis, and the blue crab cake and scrambled eggs. Every dish was absolutely delicious--fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The staff were quick and incredibly kind. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more items on the menu. Highly recommend! read more

I love Starling Diner. It is a little hipsterish. You can tellfrom the outside already what type of crowd comes here and all. But let's forget about the crowd. Let's talk about the food. They have a lot of really good baked and cooked goodies for you to choose from. Everything seems to be mouthwatering if you ask me. They have stuff french toast, crab cake salad, etc. But my favorite would have to be the smoked salmon with cream cheese. Ohhh man, the smoked salmon with cream cheese is a really good combination when you eat it together. The food was great! We started with the Breakfast Bructta and scones with lemon curd and orange butter... So good! Everyone in my family except me ordered different flavors of French Toast (Bananna Nutella, Apples & Cinnamon and Peach) They all loved them with the exception of my husband who ordered the Peach French toast but didn't realize they cooked the peaches. (He hates cooked fruit, but the French Toast itself was good.) I have the Crab cake salad with balsamic dressing. It was truly fantastic! The service was terrific! We had such high expectations based on these reviews and a friend's recommendation but we were both quite let down. First of all, I can't remember the last time we waited so long, close to an hour from when we ordered, and by the time our food arrived, I was too hungry to send back my over cooked eggs and potatoes. I ordered my eggs poached and they were closer to hard boiled. The potatoes tasted like they were cooked hours prior but chicken sausage was good and bread was fresh. My mimosa wasn't terrible either. I did make the mistake of tasting the crab claw from my husbands Bloody Mary and it tasted a bit fishy. read more

Finally came here with friends who recommended this place. My husband and I shared both specials which seem to always be their specials: blu crab cake and eggs and peach french toast. The crab cakes with eggs was flavorful and the added dollop of sour cream is a perfect touch, coupled with yukon gold roasted potatoes-YUM. The peach french toast-WOW. FRESH peaches and not canned, which means it's also not overly sweet. Where else are you going to find that? AND with a hand made baguette stuffed with marscapone! Had a great lunch here with a coworker last week.. I dont remember our servers name, but he was fantastic. Service was prompt, drinks were great (they only have a beer and wine permit, but their bloody mary is awesome and super spicy!) My friend got three different mimosas, the pear one was the best. I had the apple chicken salad sandwich, and my friend got one of the scrambles. Both great, I also tried his potatoes- they put enough to feed a whole family on the plate. Im not complaining.. This restaurant is a fantastic spot for breakfast! The menu is packed with delicious options, from fluffy pancakes to perfectly cooked eggs and crispy bacon. The ingredients taste fresh, and the portions are generous. The coffee is rich and always hits the spot. The only downside is that it tends to be a bit cold inside around this time of year, so you might want to bring a sweater. Let me start off by saying, don't be discouraged about the long wait time. It is so very worth it, the diner is an intimate location but the food is made to order. Very nice little touches by adding edible flowers to their mimosas and adding a crab leg to the bloody Mary. The French toast is a baguette and the fruit they select to pair with it is seasonal. They offer a variety of simple breakfast and lunch items including egg sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, salads, quesadillas, rice bowls, vegan options and ice cream. I'll have to try their breakfast burritos one of these days. Apparently, they're recognized as being on the top 5 list in Long Beach for them. They have about 7 tables that can be moved around on the sand and patio area. A big jungle gym is right next to it as well as restrooms with soap and toilet paper fully stocked! Order at the window and they'll call your order when it's ready in minutes.
