Love going here. I've never had a bad item from the menu. Dessert bruschetta & scones are great appetizers. My biggest dilemma is whether i want something sweet or savory. Corned beef hash is very good. I've never had french toast with this style of bread anywhere else. It reminds me of lees sandwiches baguettes.
Once upon a time, this Faerie Queen and some of her favorite partners in crime came here to have an amazing breakfast. We had French toast with berries, a classic breakfast, scones, and the Sonoma salad. All of the entrees were beautifully presented, delicious, and fairly priced. We are already making our plans to return. By the by, the scone was one of the best I have ever enjoyed- a bit of crisp on the outside and soft and scrumptious on the inside. The end.
I would rate this spot between 3-4 stars. The service is excellent, friendly and efficient. It is a very small restaurant with limited seating. There isn't space to wait which can be awkward. Tried the Irish coffee and crab cakes. Food was ok, the sauce was a bit too overpowering. Everyone seemed to be ordering the french toast. The staff work hard to keep things moving.
Super duper delicious. I had the soyrizo with potatoes and it was filling and pretty reasonably priced. My friend got the blueberry French toast and that was tasty too. Quick service and cozy diner vibes. It might be a little loud to chat when its busy but the charm is great. Make sure to come early to find Parking since its in a residential and be aware there might be a wait.
The host was incredibly rude. If I wasn't so hungry I would've gone elsewhere. Food was very underwhelming in both taste and portion size. There are far too many good breakfast spots in Long Beach to bother with this one.
Our boss treated us to lunch for a coworker's work anniversary and he had heard great things about this place and decided to try it out. It's tucked in a neighborhood and so parking was pretty sparse but we found a spot about a block away. We came around 11:45 am during the week and we were able to get a table right away. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us some good suggestions on what to try. I ordered the roast beef and scrambled eggs-16.50, and my coworkers ordered the chorizo and apple sausage which are both $14.95. Our boss ordered for the table the San Fran stuffed French toast with seasonal berries ($14.99) to share! I really enjoyed my roast beef hash and potatoes on the side. The side of baguette bread I could have done with out since it was a bit harder to eat. The French toast was different with the baguette bread but I really enjoyed it since it didn't make the bread all soggy like other French toast can do( sad we had to share it lol).
Food is delectable! The diner is charming! Service is superb! The staff are hospitable and prices are affordable! EAT HERE! If you're on the fence between this place and another, pick this diner! If you're worried about parking, parking sucks everywhere! Eat here! I had their basic breakfast with a side order of smoked salmon. It was perfect. The potatoes were seasoned well, and the scrambled eggs had a nice chew. Butter on a soft baguette will always be a yes for me! I also had their stuffed french toast with caramelized apples. The best french toast I've had to date. The baguette held up so well against the tender apples and creamy mascarpone. I highly recommend it!
Cute diner in a house with great service, cool vibe and amazing food. It is street parking only, we cane a Friday at 10:30 and had a slight wait and a small walk but all manageable. We started with the house Bloody Mary which had a crab claw and a kick. The micro greens were cute but not sure they had an impact on the flavor. Big hit and we loved them. Makes me want to try some other options from their cocktail menu. The must-try hyped-up French toast was worth the glory bestowed to it! We got the caramelized apples with brandy butter. Waiter said the berry or peaches are his 2 favorites but we had already narrowed down to apples or the banana Nutella. Of those 2 he said apples so we got it! Short story they are all made with fresh baguette stuffed with mascarpone cheese topped with your choice of fruit and sweet options and fresh whipped cream. I tend to lean more savory breakfast and my hubby likes the sweet so this isn't normally my jam.... But the cheese is a perfect complement to all the sweet and is something I would get again for sure, which says a lot. We got the cheeseburger scramble which was hearty and fillings. Ground beef, cheese, mushrooms and scrambled eggs, simple, easy and yummy. I personally like my eggs salty and needed to add some but my husband thought it was perfect. It was served with yummy whole small roasted potatoes that were crispy but still soft inside, perfectly seasoned IMO. Also a small slice of fresh baguette with butter (and jam on table) was a tasty plus. In fact that bread makes me want to go back for lunch to get a sandwich. All in all it is a new top spot on our list and can't wait to go back and try another cocktail, a new French toast flavor and maybe the crab cake and eggs that I saw walk by. Great find.
I had this place bookmarked for a very long time. Finally got the chance to try it. I heard that they are very popular for their French toast. So of course we gotta try it. The French toast here was very different from the ones I normally get. They used baguettes for their French toast. We got the Caramelized apples with Brandy butter. The apples were caramelized perfectly. It wasn't so sweet like other places that I have tried. Also, it was nice that there was still a crunch to it. The apples were not super soft and mush like most places. The mascarpone or cream cheese for filling was simple but yummy. Although, they executed this item well I still prefer the original French toast breads. I like my French toast on the softer end. Baguettes required more chewing since it was not as soft. Overall, I don't mind eating it again lol We also ordered the Egg Benjamin. This was a salmon Benedict without the biscuits. I do prefer it this way. They provided a bread on the side instead. It came with some potatoes. I like the potatoes they used, but I do prefer it to be steamed. The exterior was somewhat hard. I got tired of eating it. We tried the blue crab cake as well. It was yummy, but prob something to share. I usually prefer lumps of crabs in my crab cakes. The flavor was good, but we got sick of it quick. Not sure why. Maybe too creamy?? It was good tho. Coffee was good. Normal & fresh Service was ok Parking was not bad.
Was surprised to find that this little diner was located in the neighborhood would've never thought it would be here. There's plenty of street parking. We came just a little before they close got a symbol, scrambled eggs and corned, beef hash and honestly, I've had better hash didn't like how this one was prepared. It was like a burger, patty and a little too done on the outside for me in greasy. Also didn't like their breakfast potatoes, which were a huge chunks of Yukon gold potatoes felt more on the heavier side. The eggs were cooked nice and fluffy. It also came with a little piece of bread with some butter on the side. My friend ordered their basic breakfast, which is basically eggs, potatoes, and bread and at first both of our plates came out a little cold so they were nice to bring us new plates that were nice and fresh. The staff was very friendly. I probably come here again to try their other items.
You need to order the French toast here. It's the best French toast over ever had anywhere omg. It's stuffed with a custard that's not too sweet but perfectly blends with the bread and it comes out warm almost every time. Also the bananas are super ripe it's so good. Their service here is also excellent they are very welcoming right when you walk in. I've been here a few times never had a bad experience. The inside is cozy small cafe vibes the tables are a little small but that's my only gripe. Other than that's this place is amazing and has a must try French toast.
Cute little diner tucked away on 3rd Street. Find street parking in the area, be sure not to block people's driveways! They have outdoor and indoor seating. Been here a couple times. They have a variety of teas, coffees, sodas annnnnnd ADULT COCKTAILS. I've had their basic breakfast which is really good, their scones are house made so they're very soft in the inside. Their blue crab cakes are good BUT their French toast is AMAZING. Not too sweet, just the right amount of fruit, we got one for the table to share and I'm pretty sure I could have ate that all on my own. They're only open til 3 and it gets crowded on weekends so hurry over!

Located in a neighborhood, with plenty of street side parking. Cute cozy place to grab some breakfast. Ordered the crab cakes ($18-19) and their famous stuffed French toast ($14-15). The crab cakes came with eggs, potatoes, bread, and a great hollandaise sauce. Overall the crab cakes were delicious and the sauce complimented the crab so well. My only criticism is that the crab cakes were a little too mushy, needed to be left on the pan a little bit longer go give it a more crispy exterior. Their french toast was also very delicious! A nice twist on fremch toast using a baguette style bread stuffed with creme. read more
Anticipate some waiting during weekends as everyone was to brunch the same time as you! We probably waited 25-30min before getting seated. The servers were very nice and are always available to top up your drinks. We ordered the basket of scones and they came out fresh from the oven. Heavenly. The spreads that came with it were very good as well. As for the mains, we got the classic and the sausage egg combo. They came out cold and the amount of potatoes you get is kinda sad (precisely 8 pieces lol). The sausage was quite burnt. The mains were so underwhelming compared to the scones. They have different flavors of it so each time I try a different one. My favorite is the stuffed French toast with berries; the mascarpone cheese inside is just so good! My boyfriend had the Roast Beef Hash which was also very good. We tried the pear mimosa and the peach/mango mimosa which were both delicious but we agree the pear was the winner of the two. This is a very popular breakfast spot so get there early because they typically have a wait. read more

I've not had a breakfast this good in a long time. I'm willing to say maybe it was the best breakfast I've ever had outside of grandma's kitchen. What we had: scones, the goat cheese, spinach, and mushroom scramble, the crab cakes and scrambled eggs, and the brioche French toast with peaches, also the drunken chai. Everything was delicious, the two of us, yes I said two, ate it all! Only thing left was a scone and some potatoes. Everything tasted so delightful I wanted to do what my father does sometimes and go speak to the chef lol. The food was so good I made a conscious decision to make sure I wrote a review. The service was good, friendly, accommodating and helpful. The atmosphere is very homey, it's a super cute spot located in a neighborhood. Fantastically Friendly Service!! While visiting family for the holidays and browsing for places to have a morning meal, Starling Diner caught my eye. I'm so glad that it did and we decided to dine here. What an amazingly friendly and welcoming place to come enjoy some rather tasting menu items. We were immediately greeted and offered a table that was spacious enough for all of our appetites. Looking at the menu and receiving such great recommendations we really couldn't have gone wrong with anything we would have ordered. We started off the meal with these warm, delicious Double Cream Scones that just made your mouth water. Especially once you add the house made lemon curd and orange honey butter topping your mouth will jump with joy. I believe the owner was the one who was so hands on and took his time going over the items on the menu with us. Which was so helpful and brought me to order the Blue Crab Cakes and Eggs. The Aioli sauce that is used is so flavorful and the flakiness of the crab cakes made this the perfect breakfast. Their Irish Coffee is also a must nothing gets your day going like Whiskey and Whipped cream topping. I would recommend this location to everyone and we will absolutely be back to dine here when in town again. Went to this diner for the first time today and we were super impressed and satisfied. Everything we ordered was bomb. First we had the breakfast bruschetta. If you ever wondered what a breakfast appetizer is this is it. It's mascarpone with berries and honey atop baguette points. So good. We also had the roast beef hash and scrambled eggs (we added cheese and tomatoes). It was so so good. The roast beef was so flavorful We also the mushroom spinach and goat cheese scramble. We added bacon to this (if you eat meat, do it). It was a simple dish but when it comes to breakfast foods, I like the basics. We will definitely go back again read more

Came for brunch on a Saturday and was able to find street parking easily as this place is in a residential area. We didn't wait very long to be seated - maybe 15 minutes! The seating area is pretty small - maybe it could fit 30 - 40 people? Food: I got the Eggs Benjamin (about $16) which comes with smoked salmon, spinach, a poached egg and micro greens. The potatoes helped neutralize the saltiness of the salmon and honestly, the potatoes is what made this dish really good. They were cooked perfectly (not too soft, but not burnt), I didn't need ketchup (which is a huge plus), and the seasoning on it was really delicious. My husband got the Stuffed French Toast with peaches (about $14) and a side of eggs and potatoes. The french toast was good, but because they use a baguette instead of thick bread, it tasted more like a dessert dish than a breakfast item. Service: Friendly and prompt. My water was consistently filled and our waiter was super nice and super apologetic when he realized he forgot to put our order in LOL. Another plus for me is when an establishment puts mint or fruit in their water - I love it! read more
Atmosphere: The Starling Diner is located in a neighborhood. It's almost hard to find since it blends right in. The outside resembles a main street restaurant. There is some outdoor seating as well. Indoors there are about 15 tables and a bar. If you are looking for a metallic shiny diner, you won't find that with the exterior but the inside of the Starling Diner screams "diner". There are collections of art on the wall. Food: According to their website, they are all about ingredients, technique and care. They purchase new fruit daily and don't heat things up out of a bag. They were featured on the Food Network and known for their food including crab cakes. Growing up on the Chesapeake, I love crab cakes so I knew that was what I wanted to order. They all have sorts of options including: roast beef hash and eggs, french toast with real whipped cream, and even a crab cake hoagie. They are only open for breakfast and lunch so no dinner options. You won't find an extensive menu but you find a fresh and seafood themed menu. I decided to order the crab cake hoagie which came with hand formed crab cakes with Roma Tomatoes and Field Greens Topped with micro greens and lemon aioli. You could tell it was homemade and everything was fresh. It was extremely tasty but it was such a small portion, I felt like I was hungry directly after I ate it. Service: I was able to place the order online and pick it up with no issues. My biggest issue was just finding a place to park but the staff was friendly and the food was ready. Cost: $$ If you are looking for a cheap diner, this isn't it. My meal cost $18 and I was still hungry. That being said, it was a high quality meal. Would I Go Back? This place is adorable. It's nestled in the middle of the beautiful homes in Long Beach. Best to carpool to make parking a little easier & I recommend keeping your parties small (it's a rather small location.) The food is decadent; I indulged in the Peach Stuffed French Toast. I was hesitant at first, because I was afraid the dish was going to be very sweet. However, the amount of sweetness was perfect!! The peaches were amazing, warm & caramelized in their own juices. The French toast is actually a fresh baguette from San Francisco! That was different! If I could do things differently, I would've ordered the same plate I had & the plate with eggs, sausage & potatoes to split with someone else; instead of ordering eggs & sausage à-la-carte--it's cheaper to order the plate instead. My friend has the crab cakes Benedict & wow!! I'm not a fan of crab cakes, but they were delish! It's a great spot to come & experience LB locally & avoid the hustle & bustle of the city. Starling Diner has been a long time favorite brunch spot for me and I've never disagreed with the 4 star rating it receives, but with so many new restaurants kicking things up a notch, I think Starling may need to step it up a little. I absolutely love how this place is a converted craftsman home, nestled in the residential area of Belmont Heights. The service has always been impeccable with super friendly and attentive staff/servers. They have an awesome selection of beverages from cafe au lait to tea lattes to signature sodas and mimosas! Their Stuffed French Toast is a must try as they stuff baguettes with mascarpone and top them off with your choice of seasonal berries, caramelized apples or a special style of the day. I'm a little surprised that having been around for so many years though, that they haven't updated or changed some items on the menu to keep things interesting. I understand several of the items are popular, but even the more popular items came with epic flaws. My friend and I ordered the Blue Crab Cakes and asked for poached eggs instead of scramble. My other friend ordered the Eggs Benjamin. The crab cakes were delicious and the potatoes were seasoned and roasted to perfection as usual. However, the poached eggs on all our dishes were overcooked! Quite disappointing and it will be a while before I make my way back here. First impressions: a lovely little diner in Long Beach. They were able to accommodate a group of 11 people despite their smaller space. Our server was very pleasant and got our orders almost immediately after we were seated. Food: 4.5/5 The top favorites of our table were the stuffed French toast and blue crab cakes with eggs. The breakfast daily egg scrambles had a great variety but taste wise they were good but not amazing. I would recommend to anyone visiting the Long Beach area. We recently relocated to Long Beach CA and have been checking out the local, family owned businesses since arriving. This place is locally owned, walking distance from our Airbnb and their breakfasts are fantastic!!! I feel like Starling Diner was created by the people who love Belmont Heights for the people who love Belmont Heights. My husband had a Ham and Swiss Scramble which was excellent but I had to try the Smoked Salmon on Crostini and it was probably the best I've ever had. Was really excited for this place and thus disappointed. Expected a wait on weekend, which was fine, did not expect to be aggressively shunted out upon trying to enter with my dog to put my name down SO I COULD WAIT OUTSIDE (like i get it, dogs can't dine in restaurants but also you could tell me nicely? Or like put the waitlist outside like most restaurants??) Literally in there two seconds. Anyway, after this sour start we were eventually seated and helped by the sweetest waitress (the best part of this experience), ordered the tasty bruschetta, then got our mains. Was excited by all the photos and reviews of the famous French toast but it was literally like two hunks of baguette with a massive slathering of cool whip and some canned peaches. One of my fav go-to's and rave about. Hadn't been back in almost a decade and now that I'm back in LBC, I have to go again and to take my boyfriend. We went super early, so there weren't a lot of people, but some were sitting outside. Brrrrr! It was one cold and foggy morning! Even inside was cold! I got myself a latte to warm up and went for my fav - Eggs Benjamin! That definitely did not disappoint, but I'd wish the home fries/roasted potatoes were a bit more.....fresh? It just didn't fit my palette or taste buds. My boyfriend ordered the infamous Caramelized brandy stuffed french toast (it was one of my go-to's also, but gotta watch the figure lol). He liked it because it was different, but the apples were a bit plain? I didn't taste it this time, so I cannot comment, but I still love this place! read more
