Not great, the biscuits are pretty hard, so is the chicken fried steak and the birria is dry it was more like pot roast, the chicken sandwich comes on the biscuit and is basically a tower of 4 chicken tenders on a biscuit you can't eat it unless ur jaw is unhinged, the bacon was even a little off. Ate here with two co-workers. It is a place that is rather loud so it you are looking for quiet, there is outside seating. Our waitress was very helpful recommending menu items and we had a nice friendly greeting upon walking in. I had the fish tacos which were very good and I recommend them for a lighter meal. This place was disappointing. It's cute inside, could have been so much more. The bartender was attentive enough, a bit of a language barrier but not a big issue at all. We ordered wine and beer, and started with The app of smoked chicken wings. I have to say- they were the scrawniest wings I have every seen, more bones than meat. It's unfortunate because the flavors- were there! The smoked flavor and the ranch avocado dip was so good! But each wing was like one bite! I had salad and it was a decent size and I enjoyed the flavors. My boyfriend got the Wagyu burger and fries. He said it was " ok". While we're there, a girl next to us ordered a huge dessert- the bread pudding. It was ginormous and it looked pretty amazing. However ... I visited State Fare with my mom for lunch during a day out. We'd seen the restaurant from I-10 and saw it had good ratings so we decided to check it out. The experience went from lackluster to disrespectful. We started with the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. This was good and the crab topping was delicious. When we ordered our main courses, my mom repeatedly asked for the half portion of chicken fried steak, specifically requesting the 4 oz. She is older and has difficultly finishing a meal. I ordered the ribs. The dishes were ok, her chicken fried steak had a lot of dough, but nothing Tobasco and salt couldn't help. She took a few bites and decided to take the rest home. My ribs were also fine. We were disappointed with the food, but chalked it up to a new experience. After our meal, we asked for to go boxes and the check. I noticed we'd been charged for a full chicken fried steak, and asked our waiter to adjust the ticket if possible. I didn't want to cause an issue and said if they couldn't adjust the price I understood. He goes to get his manager and I explain the situation. Before I can finish he looks at the to go boxes and says, "oh, but you're taking the leftovers?" and states the he can adjust the price but we will need to leave the food. I was genuinely taken aback by his conditions and tone and said ok, we'll leave the food. He made us feel like we were trying to scam the restaurant, when I had expressed flexibility with my request and understanding for the mix up. While we waited for our food, a women had approached my mom and I to ask if we would recommend the restaurant. It was our first time and we couldn't share thoughts. And the Hipster-Cristo club sandwich was a pure fail. The sandwich had been dipped in beignet batter before frying. Oh and then doused in powdered sugar. Cut into quarters, I guess, each larger than my husband's fist. And gooey on the inside. I ate part of one quarter and pushed the plate away. Came here for brunch with the family and boy did we get there on time! We arrived around 1130pm on a Saturday and we got a table just in time. After us, a wait started.... First of all, the portion sizes are ginormous! I don't believe we finished any of our entrees. - Chicken fried steak - this one was probably a decent size entree - except the biscuit that was the size of burger made the dish very heavy. But it was good! - Avocado toast - I am usually against ordering this at restaurants because avocado + toast + eggs are so easy to make at home, but the amount of avocado was a lot and it came with a side. - Birria grilled cheese sandwich - good, but rich. The grilled cheese sandwich had three slices of bread rather than two, so it was heavy. - Banana stuffed french toast - did not like at all. So dry! French toast should be moist. - Chicken biscuit sandwich - The biscuit was the same that came with the chicken fried steak. It was difficult to eat because it was so large, so my son ended up cutting up the chicken pieces and biscuits and eating it that way. It was good, but he didn't eat half the biscuit - I wouldn't have either. - Spicy brown sugar bacon (side) - nothing special - it tasted similar to maple bacon sprinkled with red pepper flakes. Overall, I would come back to try other dishes - but I would suggest doing it family style and ordering 1-2 less entrees. We loved this place!!! They have outdoor seating and great service, but the food was the star! We had the Purist Mac 'n Cheese with Gulf Trash, which was creamy and so good, and Pesto Grilled Cheese. For the latter, we asked the waiter what was the best side they had. He said the Whiskey Glazed Brussels. We immediately laughed out loud, because we both DESPISE brussles sprouts. Cannot even put into words how much we hate the vile bitter little bulbs. He went to great lengths to coax us into getting them, so we relented. He promised he would exchange them for a different side if we did not like them. It was not necessary. They were AMAZING! Sweet and savory at the same time and drenched in a delectable sauce that nearly completely masked the bitter taste of the actual sprouts. We were gobsmacked. The food was all so good that we discussed coming back before the end of our trip (that is something we NEVER do. We plan the whole trip around the meals and attempt to try as many different restaurants as we can in each city). We also tried two of their non-alcoholic drinks, of which they had a wide variety. Efrain (I think that's how you spell his name- since they don't wear name tags) is an awesome server who is very personable. Kids love their options Ha's and it's in a super cool tray. Let's get into it! So this place is right next-door to my hairdresser. She highly recommended this place for me to try out and said it wouldn't disappoint. The packaging: I ordered to-go. The packaging was great. Held the food together well on the way home. The Food: Let me start by saying I normally don't eat pork. However, this pork chorp was bussin and huge! The sides were bussin too. The green beans with bacon and the smooth mash potatoes. It was all amazing. The only thing I had an issue with was the funnel cake. It was more like funnel turds and it was cold as well. It tasted okay, but I had been craving funnel cake and this wasn't it for me. It was also kinda doughy, I like the lightly crispy funnel cakes that give you a little crunch. Overall: I might go here again and after looking at the menu I would likely order the same thing minus the funnel cake. They don't have alot of stuff on their menu. What a great find after our crazy drive to Houston from Dallas!! Service was top notch. When we arrived, the bar was full but we were immediately seated at a table. Our waiter, Aiden, came & explained the menu and took our drink order. I tried the flight of margaritas & my husband had Buffalo Trace on an ice rock. Delicious!! Came here for brunch with my friends. First tip, always make a reservation. I had made a last minute reservation which meant we had to wait for an hour. For drinks I had the frozen flight. My favorite of the bunch is the lavender lemonade. You have the option to mix and match so I substituted one flavor to have two lavender lemonades. Our drinks took almost 30 minutes to arrive. At this point we were starving and trying to find our waiter. For my main meal I had the poached eggs and crab cake plate. I found this quite bland and under seasoned. Really wanted to give this a better review after hearing about it for a while and not dining there until now. We came as a small group for a weekday lunch. The service / server was great and explained the menu well. Covid procedures were followed and we sat outside. We got 3 apps ; wings, fried green tomatoes, and the bacon wrapped shrimp. The wings were pretty average and slightly overcooked. Green tomatoes with crab were nicely done. The shrimp was good as well. The entrees was where you expect this to shine but unfortunately, we much preferred the apps. We got hot chicken which came highly recommended from our server. And a chili cheese burger and braised beef. I got the hot chicken and while it was decently cooked, there was no Nashville hot chicken style/flavor, and I have no idea why it was served with cheese with potatoes and cauliflower (like 2 lbs of it). Kinda seemed like an odd combo.. maybe if they just put it on a bun with slaw and a better sauce, it would've been tastier. Overall, the experience was fine, I think we probably should've ordered other dishes off the menu but for what we ordered, the food was pretty average. Came with mashed potatoes and bacony green beans. Wasn't a huge fan of the Black Pepper sauce as it really just tasted like teriyaki sauce but was good in small amounts. Coworkers went for the Short ribs with shrimp, the burger (which smelled heavenly) and the fried shrimp with hushpuppies. Dessert was insane! I've been here three times and every time the food and drinks were EXCELLENT. The second time I went the service was sub par and, after alerting the manager, Miguel, (which I would typically never do) he more than made up for it. Not only did he take care of us that night but he promised to take care of us if we chose to come back. We came back a month later and happened to see Miguel. Though our server, Daniel, was PERFECT ( he did many things like offer us a taste of the grits when I seemed unsure and anticipated our needs throughout the entire time) when we saw Miguel towards the end of our meal we reminded him of our prior dining experience. He was extremely accommodating and was the cherry on top of our pleasant third visit. The ambiance each time was mildly busy, upbeat, with light music and multiple TVs playing the game. I came with big hopes for great food and big portions because that's what I think of when I hear state fair. I definitely have to say the double pork chop is a must try just because the marinade is a 5/5! But the size was a huge disappointment. It was barely bigger than my fork. The yelp pictures of it definitely made me think it'd be bigger. The plate comes with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both are subpar. You have the option to load up your potatoes for +$3 more, but I decided not to. The green beans are just steamed so not bad but nothing special. I DO NOT recommend the seafood platter. Huge disappointment. Everything was over fried and dry. The crab Cole slaw is just a side of Cole slaw and a baby crab cake that's separated. I'm blessed that we were able to get a reservation the day before at prime Sunday brunch time at State Fare. The place was popping with people and waits as long as 45 min or more. This is definitely a place you want to call ahead and make your reservation! Whether you put in your spot or make the wait, I can guarantee your time at State Fare will be worth it! First off, vibes and aesthetic. The restaurant was very well lit, on point lighting for those squad pics (like we took). There's a lot of unique, lit-up, and quirky signs that add to the restaurant's feel. I'm a big fan of the metal pieces in the middle of the restaurant that spell out "STATE FARE". I also took notice of the utensils in small shopping carts. Additionally, the dark wood finish of the restaurant with metal accents all add to the vibe. I'd LOVE if my home was decorated this way! We gotta give a shout out to our waiter, Michael. He was hospitable, answered all our questions, made us laugh a few times with his jokes, and helped us make a great experience at State Fare. Michael was very knowledgeable about the menu and providing us recommendations as folks from out of town. We were able to narrow down our choices and meet allergy needs of our group. We all kept saying "yo Michael is so great" throughout our brunch. What a great guy. (And thank you Michael if you're reading!) Now the juicy details (literally): food and drink. The thing that caught our attention was the colorful cocktail flight offered by State Fare. If you can't make your mind on wine, Bloody Mary's, or wine, you can have four of each type! Much of our group got the cocktail flight which consists of ocean blue, two margaritas, and a frosé. Friends, it looks small but it packs a punch! And if you're a person who likes instagramming your drinks, this one is it (in fact we found State Fare through instagram searches where the colorful flight comes up!). I ended up getting the ocean blue by itself to savor one cocktail of the four. My friends who got the flight all enjoyed it (and continued enjoying the buzz felt for a while after) Those who got the chicken fried steak meal loved it! It definitely filled them up. Myself and a friend got the Cathead Buttermilk Biscuit with Southern Fried Chicken Thighs, Tillamook cheddar, b&b pickles, local honey and made it H-Town Hot. Wow that chicken was SOO juicy. Service was good but the food left. Lot to be desired. We probably should have said some thing but didn't. We (my daughter and two granddaughters) were there the night before the older ones state gymnastics meet. These two eat a lot of pasta so they got the kids pasta meal. The amount of spaghetti was so meager to start with. I think if you wanted to you could have counted each strand. It didn't look good either (they do get it buttered with the sauce on the side), looked very dry. They did taste it and not sure how you can ruin spaghetti but both girls gave it a yuk. My daughter tried and she said it did taste odd. The apple slices looked old, the fries were good. I had the salad with tuna. Salad was ok, the tuna had no flavor at all. My daughter had salad as well and said it was ok, nothing special. We should have said something but didn't. Based on the prices and restaurant itself we did expect a lot more.
