We are camping up the street and we immediately came to down after our road trip up here. I remember coming here 10 years ago so we came again because I remember it being good! Great restaurant in Bar Harbor. We stayed at the Harborside Resort and it was a close walk. You eat out on a pier and see great views of the water. We love watching the boats on the water. Steamed mussels, fried clams and a big slice of blueberry pie! Maybe I was just tired of cruise ship cuisine when I was here last month, but that's definitely my new last-meal-on-earth request! The restaurant was crowded as my cruise had just pulled in to port that morning, so I was lucky to get a seat when some fellow passengers invited me to share their table. Stewman's is right on the water- what a view! I never even went inside, so I couldn't tell you what it was like in there but outside- magical! It was on my vacation list of places to try, and so very glad I stopped. Everything I ordered was delicious, fresh and visually striking, prices were fair. Stopped by for dinner on our first night in Bar Harbor. Even though there was a line at the hostess stand, we were able to grab a table inside with no wait (a table outside would have only been a 15 minute wait). We were seated right next to the huge open windows where we got a nice breeze and a view of the harbor. It was like seating outside, but we were inside. Service was fantastic. We were going to order the shrimp basket, and when it was mentioned it was for our son, the waiter quickly said he could make a kid's version. Score! He checked on us frequently and made sure our glasses were never empty. Since it was our first night in Maine, I of course had to order a lobster roll. So good. It came packed with fresh, tender lobster that was tossed lightly in mayo. The roll was soft and buttery, which made the dish even better. It came with sweet potato fries, which was pretty standard, but I'm glad it was a side option (instead of just regular fries). I also tried some of the Pier House Catch, which came with all kinds of fried seafood (haddock, sweet belly clams, shrimp, and scallops). Everything was good, especially the haddock. We visited Stewman's on our first day trip to Bar Harbor during our Maine vacation this year. It was a solid lunch; not superlative, but tasty and the service was good. We sat out on the pier (which, in retrospect might not have been the best choice for a windy October afternoon as it was a bit chilly). To drink: We both ordered local beers, which were good. Mine was a sweeter weissbier style and his was a more malty darker beer. To eat: Shared: Smoked fish dip with pita chips. The dip was good, creamy and with a nice punch of smoked whitefish. We ran out of chips and had to ask for more. Him: Fried clam plate with fries and coleslaw. He said the clams were nice and tender, fried well. The fries were crisp and salty. Me: Lobster roll with mixed regular and sweet potato fries, and coleslaw. The lobster roll was packed with lobster, including 2 large chunks of claw meat and the seasoned mayo was just tangy enough. For both of us the coleslaw was the highlight of the meal and we both wished there had been more on the plate. It was lightly dressed and deliciously tangy. Talking to the hostess later, she told us that they put horseradish in the slaw. That's definitely something I'm going to try at home because it was amazingly good. We would definitely eat there again (but maybe sit inside out of the breeze, if we go back in October!). read more

We stopped by just for drinks and dessert since we arrived to town kinda late. We saw the floating dock and asked the hostess how we can sit down there and she directed us to the bar. The bartender told us there isn't service down there but we can take food to-go and bring it down there ourselves and the seating is first come first serve. We ordered a glass of wine, a mojito, strawberry shortcake, and blueberry pie before making our way down to the end of the dock. The pricing is definitely tourist driven as this is right in the heart of Bar Harbor and on the water. The desserts weren't horrible but definitely messy in a to-go box. The blueberry pies crust was a tad burnt which was a bummer. The portions were perfect for sharing and our drinks were tasty. The water dock was great and you had a nice view of town and the nearby boats/yachts. 2 drinks and 2 desserts and our bill was $68, which seems comical but I guess that's what you get for being in Bar Harbor. read more

Bottom Line: Touristy and pricey but still an enjoyable experience. After a long day of traveling my husband and I landed at the iconic Stewman's Lobster Pound since it was conveniently next to our hotel and we were on the hunt for whole lobsters. Stewman's has a great location right on Frenchman's Bay and it has the cliche decor of lobster traps, buoys and such which I thought was fun. Since it was chilly we sat inside and enjoyed the real wood burning fire in the fireplace. For food we both ordered The Down East Lobster Experience so we could try the foods Maine is famous for and not have to think too hard about what to get. The Experience included a cup of clam chowder, a healthy portion of muscles, a whole 1-1/4 lb. lobster, 1/2 ear of corn, two red potatoes and a full slice of blueberry pie. The market price when we visited was $65. We also added some ice cream to our meal. Everything was tasty although I think then muscles would benefit from a dipping sauce to liven them up a bit. I really appreciate the hard work of watermen and lobstermen and I liked seeing their catch in the lobster pound outside. Stewman's encourages visitors to check it out and they even have a stool so little ones can see in the tanks. I also enjoyed seeing the steaming operations adjacent to the pound/tanks. Maddie was our server and she was awesome. She was attentive and friendly and really elevated the experience. read more

We went and asked for oyster to see how well, or not, they are. I asked if they were milky (white fat that make them less tasty), they told me no. Well, of the 12, 1 was not. In addition they open the oysters without knowing how and, as a result, you get some shell mixed with the oyster. A true must visit to get that lobster fix!!! Stewman's was great from start to finish! We arrived as soon as they opened after driving a few hours to reach the park area. It was too chilly to do outdoor seating at the time, but that is an option and it's beautiful I'm sure to sit right by the water. We came to Maine to try the lobster and try the lobster we did! Super yummy and there's just really no comparison to how fresh it was. My mom and I shared "the Down East" lobster experience which came with a cup of claim chowder, 1lb of lobster/mussels accompanied with sweet corn and potatoes, and a slice of blueberry pie! My sister ordered a must order lobster roll to complete the experience. Oh and the blueberry beer is a unique wash down to the food. Absolutely no complaints. Went to Stewman's Downtown for lunch. Menu looked good, location on the water was excellent. We only had a little time to grab lunch before a trolley tour was to begin. Ordered a local draft, my wife got the artichoke dip. I got the pound of peel's eat shrimp. Both were delicious. My shrimp had a garlic butter, olive oil and spice and remoulade sauces to try. The problem with restaurants that are located in resort or vacation areas is that they are usually overpriced and underdeliver on their food. Sometimes I wonder if they don't really care about repeat business, so they cut corners. I think that is the case with this one. When we arrived in Bar Harbor the first thing that we saw was a giant cruise ship. That was my first clue that we may be getting the mediocrity that comes with restaurants that rely on tourists who are generally a one and done. To be fair, some of the food was good. The Cobb salad was pretty good. It better be for $36. The cajun shrimp sandwich seemed like it was made from popcorn shrimp and the clam chowder looked and tasted like it was from Campbells soup. The mussels were fine, but nothing special. Total for 6 people with one app, 5 lunches, and 5 beers was well over $200. I would say that I was disappointed, but I sort of saw this coming. read more
