If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We came here for breakfast after an outing in Fruita. It wasn't crowded, but they had only one waitress working on a Saturday morning. The hostess looked like she'd rather stick a hot poker in her eye than to be working. We were greeted with a friendly scowl...yippee! Because there was only one waitress, it took FOREVER for her to get around to taking our order. We waited for our food for a good 30 minutes. When we got our order, it was just not good (and I was STARVING! Shoe leather would have tasted good!). I ordered the carne asada and eggs, which came with hash browns. The carne asada was probably the worst I've ever tasted in my life; not seasoned and really tough to chew. I didn't even take it home to feed to the dogs. The eggs were done right. The hash browns were not crispy and not salted. My husband ordered the hamburger patty and eggs. The patty was not seasoned at all. He says they managed to not screw up the toast. The waitress never checked back to see if we needed anything else, but to her credit, she was running around ragged...poor thing. The best part about the meal was being able to leave this place. Thank goodness I had cash so I wouldn't be waiting around another half hour if I had paid through credit card. read more

I took the family out for dinner last-night. We'd been wanting to try the Strayhorn as we had not been there since it relocated from Loma. The atmosphere was really nice and the staff were really friendly and attentive. The place was pretty busy and there seemed to be no shortage of business which is always a good sign. When we ordered, we were disappointed to discover they were out of prime rib. Being out of prime rib on a Friday at 6 pm is poor planning. My son ordered salmon instead and asked for mixed veggies for his side. Turns out they were out of mixed veggies as well. He finally ended up with potato and gravy. I ordered a chicken fried steak instead. The wait was long but the food finally arrived. Everyone was happy except for my son. His salmon was ice cold in the center and was clearly still raw. He had to send it back and it returned a few minutes later after a stent in the microwave. We overheard the server telling the table next to us they were out of salmon. My chicken fried steak was excellent. The real deal. My wife and daughter both enjoyed their steaks. Poor inventory management, the kitchen was very slow and some food was not properly cooked. read more

Best restaurant in Fruita! We eat here regularly and the service and food is absolutely incredible! 18 of us ate there recently and everyone was thrilled with their meals. The wait staff are so sweet and are always helpful. My mother has celiac (gluten intolerance) and she always loves her meals and the gluten free dessert. I really want this place to succeed in their new location. That being said, they are off to a rocky start. Went on a Sat for lunch. Only two waitresses, no hostess or bus people. Service was disorganized and slow because of the understaffing. The food was ok, but not up to the level as when it was in Loma. And they didn't take the time to give the place a good cleaning. Visible dust on open duct work, cobwebs, and lack of cleanliness in bathrooms. I hope management sees this and makes adjustments because I want this place to succeed! read more

When we travel, we look for non-chain places to eat. We weren't disappointed. Wife had chopped steak and I had the corned beef breakfast. Took my friends from Denver there last Saturday for breakfast. We arrived at 10:40, breakfast ends at 11. We ordered bloody mary drinks and she took our order at about 10:50. At about 11:15 the waitress came out and said the cook was very particular and refused to make us breakfast. She was great and very apologetic. Fantastic find-especially bc GPS tried to send us down the street, to someone's driveway instead!! Dining area is spacious and clean, with nice decor and bar area. Tried the daily special, sampler platter, filet, cheeseburger, and apple pie a la mode for dessert-everything was very, very tasty, and nicely prepared and presented. We've eaten here many times, but haven't been for a few months. Went there last night and was SO disappointed. The meal on the plate seemed smaller than before and my filet was not done to my liking. Didn't tell server because then my husband would have finished eating his dinner before I got a new steak. The pistolero soup my husband enjoys so much had an oil slick on top and was way thinner in consistency than before. So disappointing and needless to say won't be going back. read more

I had high hopes for this place. I want to support our local community but this restaurant was very expensive and the steaks and service lacked. I got a medium sirloin that came extra rare and full of gristle. So much so that I couldn't cut it with a knife. I ordered soup and received it after my entire meal for dessert. My husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger and didn't get the bacon yet was still charged. The steaks lacked seasoning and the shrimp and mashed potatoes had no seasoning at all. The 2/3 lb hamburger is lucky if it was 1/3 lb. We complained 3 times and the waiter had no idea or offered to fix. The only good food items we had out of 7 people was the piggin strings and beer cheese soup. As for the service they are super understaffed. We had to ask for everything. He did not provide refills, did not take our order, did not understand our dinner. We were there for nearly 2 hours waiting on food, no desserts. I'm sorry but I can't recommend this restaurant. Of hundreds of reviews on other sites I have very few bad reviews but this place was horrible. read more

Came in today for breakfast about 9am. Sat immediately, though it wasn't that busy. Waitress, Autumn, was very friendly and prompt. Not sure where the problem began, but it was very frustrating to sit and drink coffee until 10 before we got our food. Food was pretty good, although we weren't given our toast and 3 pieces of bacon costed $4. Overall the visit was good, I just hope the management gets all of the problems smoothed out so Fruita can have another reliable restaurant. read more

The food is decent (when they cook the meat properly and the order is submitted correctly). Unfortunately the prices are high which raises expectations. For the price, the service should be better. I personally don't care much but if a restaurant is going to have upscale prices (especially in Loma) then they should play the whole game. Their upscale restaurant does not have salad forks (once again, I personally don't care but the service should be consistent with the price). Bar services is also subpar with high prices and weak pours. Overrated for dinner. I have also had their breakfast on a couple of occasions and would recommend that. read more

So disappointing. My husband loves steak and we had heard about Strayhorn Grill, so we went there for his birthday this evening. Both he and our son ordered rib eye steaks, medium rare. Both came back medium well. My son ate his - what he could, since almost half of his 3/4 inch steak was nothing but fat. My husband sent his back, but the other three in our party were finished eating and still his steak had not come, so the birthday boy cancelled his order. So sad. The server was apologetic and empathetic, but the manager never showed his/her face, which told us they did not care in the least about the quality of their food. Take it or leave, huh? Our son and granddaughter ordered french fries with their meals. Neither of them could eat the overcooked fries. We ordered the calamari appetizer. If there was calamari in that breading, we certainly could not find it. And my "Penne Pasta with a creamy Asiago Cheese Sauce" was like eating pasta with paste applied. I don't know what all the rave reviews are about, except possibly given by people who have limited experience with eating decently cooked steaks that are not fatty and are of a sufficient thickness. This was one of our favorite places to eat, but just recently we went out for a nice family dinner and realized they were training a new cook. Our 20$+ steaks came out cold and when we finally flagged down our waitress, who was pretty much absent the whole time, she took them back to the kitchen only to come out luke warm this time! Head that this place had some good food so decided to take the family out. Decor is nice and we were seated promptly. Got menus and WOW! talking about shock. Nothing on the menu under $14.00 including the pasta dishes. Well, good food isn't cheap so I proceeded. Decided on the Chicken breast with the Green chili, cheese and mushroom rice, and side salad, even though it was pricey at $17.00. Upon being served I was greatly disappointed. What I got was a thin chicken breast, probably sliced in half so they could get two serving out of one, the green chili was ortega straight from the can, and the cheese, which only the top slice was melted was flavor less as was the entire dish. Needless to say I could only suffer through half of it. The rice was okay but to charge $17.00 for a half a apiece of chicken and canned chili is ridiculous. Maybe they don't know that they can actually roast chili on a stove top type roaster and get much better flavor than from a can. My family members both got the pasta dishes which for $14.00 were still small portions. Next time I want chicken I will go to KFC instead of here. read more
