There are Filipino communities everywhere in the Bay Area, places like Daly City where Filipino eateries are pretty common. I just didn't realize Pinole was one of them until I sauntered into this cafe before taking a walk on the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail. It was already quite busy in here at 11AM as the breakfast crowd was lingering. Yet, I managed to snag a booth. That happened much to the consternation of two passive-aggressive overweight women who clearly had their respective eyes on it. Get over it. Move on. I saw some delectable Ube-Coconut Pancakes and Eggs Benedict pass by me, but I decided to take advantage of their daily specials and ordered the $15 Tortang Talong. It appeared to be a Filipino-style omelette. My hash browns were cold, I think they didn't spend enough time on the griddle and were still partially frozen. The eggs Florentine were lacking in both flavor and finesse. Local brunch place in Pinole. 7 of us went there for weekday brunch. The service was great with friendly staff. Our orders came out at the same time and our coffees were refilled immediately. The Bistek Silog (rib eye beefsteak, eggs , garlic fried rice, pickled onions and tomatoes) was delicious with adobo sauce and I could taste a hint of calamansi. The pork chop silog was tender and seasoned well but not salty. The Longanisa Silog was moist The garlic fried rice was not too garlicky, perfectly balanced. Of course I had to drench everything with vinegar. For dessert we shared the Ube Coconut pancake smothered generously with ube sauce. No wait when I came here on a Sunday morning but restaurant was busy. I think I got lucky with my timing. Ordered the fresh squeezed calamansi juice, ube-coconut pancakes, and eggs floretine. Loved the pancakes. Very purple. I like that it came with fresh berries. Very large portions. I was only able to finish 80% of my meal. Calamansi was as advertised freshly squeezed. Happy to have found a place that serves ube pancakes that isn't 30+ minutes away. The prices were also quite reasonable. For one of the specials they had pumpkin spice pancakes for $11. The service was absolutely terrific and speedy! Very warm welcome. Servers were very nice. They went above and beyond to help when I returned shortly after realizing I forgot something. The wait time really depends on when you visit, especially during busy hours, when it might take a little longer for them to notice you because there's usually at least one person in front, and tables fill up quickly. I was most excited of the pork chop but it lacked flavor; it needed more soy sauce. I loved the pickles that came with the pork chop. I'll come back and try it again and try other items. Service was good. The waiter was polite and quick. Bathroom is located outside, so if it's during the colder months, make sure to bring your jacket because it gets chilly. Parking is street parking. Sue's Place is a tiny joint in Pinole. If I counted right, a maximum of maybe 25 can fit comfortably inside. At noon, all tables were taken inside and outside parklet. A good sign that this restaurant is "happening". I was worried our party of 4 will need to wait. Luckily, a table opened up and we were seated promptly. If you like Ube, this is the place to get the pancakes. it was fluffy, with strawberries and blueberries and the syrup married all the flavors together. It was delicious. My son enjoyed his chicken and waffle as well. I was excited for the bistek silog but it was ok. I would like to have the garlic rice a little bit more garlicky. This past Sunday, I went with friend to Sue's Place in Pinole for late breakfast/early lunch. We stood in line to be served for more than 20 minutes without even being acknowledged or even to be looked in the face and say ill be with you. They never bothered to even speak to ask how many in the party. The place wasn't busy, at least 5-6 empty tables that were cleaned already. The Caucasian lady ahead of us was acknowledged and spoken to repeatedly without ever bothering to speak to us. We were the only African Americans in the resturant so I can only assume Sue's place wasn't in the business of serving African American that day. I politely went across the street and patronized Tina's which is usually my choice, and as usual service and food was on point. The restaurant gives off small town diner vibes, but incorporates little hints of Filipino culture here and there. I came here with my cousin for breakfast a while back, and we were so excited to finally try what Sue's has to offer. Sue's Place is right on the edge of Downtown Pinole - a hop, skip, and a jump from the Post Office. Another restaurant that I would not have found without Yelp. Sue's is a cozy, diner - feels family owned - with a decent number of small booths and some seating at the counter. Dishes on the menu are either traditional brunch spot or Filipino/brunch fusion. My favorite thing on the menu is the Adobo Pork Belly Bowl. Specifically the two strips of pork belly are seasoned and fried to perfection. It's accompanied by rice, pickled veggies, and two eggs, your style (we ordered over medium eggs). This past visit, we also got the 49ers pancakes. Two huge fluffy pancakes filled with banana pieces and topped off with strawberry butter and strawberries. Side of syrup. Pancakes met my expectations. I would like to try the Ube pancakes since that seems more unique and the first thing on the menu. Only reservation I have is on some days, it does get very busy. This past visit was on a Sunday at 10 and there was plenty of open seating. Other issue I have is the gigantic mural of what seems like a neighborhood from the 40s. Stopped by here after attending a birthday mass at St. Joseph's Church. We were greeted by a young gentleman with a warm smile. We sat at the bar and our drink order was immediately taken. We wanted to try so many items and went with the Ube-Coconut pancakes and the Joe's SF Special with garlic fried rice. Our food came out so quick in about 10 minutes. We've had Ube pancakes at other places and haven't really been satisfied UNTIL TODAY. The pancakes were drenched in a dark ube syrup and we were afraid it would be too sweet. They were PERFECT! The edges had a nice crisp and the coconut was a nice addition to each bite. The Joe's Special was a perfect balance of spinach, mushrooms and beef. I opted out the onions since I was sharing with the wife. I'm so used to having my Joe's Special with ketchup but today it was Jufran Banana Ketchup. On top of the great food, the icing on the cake was the service and personalities of the people. My favorite line that Sue would say was "Good Luck!" when she put our food down. It includes pickled jalapeños which may be a factor, but I could also not see any cheese anywhere in the burrito. The hash brown included on the side lacked salt and pepper. I tried to use salsa and hot sauce to help the burrito to no avail. The salsa was very salty. Although the hosts were friendly, we had to wave to her and him a few times then finally go up and ask for the hot sauce, napkins etc, hot sauce, check. Lots of background noise. However Dad was not happy with the Bistek dish. The meat lacked flavors and was embarrassed to express his dissatisfaction. Each of our dishes included garlic rice. Their rice was missing the garlicky goodness of what Filipinos take pride in preparing for family breakfast. I ordered their pancakes with scrambled eggs, and bacon for my kids. The portion sizes are huge and perfect for 2 small kids under 12. Overall I give this restaurant the following ratings: 4 out of 5 stars for their American breakfast 3 out of 5 stars for the Filipino dishes. We were happy with their customer service. Passing through on the way to Sacramento and decided to stop by Sue's Place. It's very indiscreet and easy to miss. Tucked away on a side street and not much to it but it's cute inside. It's a little older but the energy of the staff and patrons is palpable. Ordered the Spam Scramble, the Father's Day special. It was tasty although the garlic rice was a bit crunchy and a little plain. Honestly, the rice was the low point. The scramble with the veggies was good. Ordered the French toast, that was delicious. The bread was thick and soaked up the syrup nicely. The bathrooms are located in a strange side patio and you almost need to walk through the kitchen to get there.
