**Update, a manager at Sugarbacon called me today to apologize for the experience we had at brunch. He made no excuses but acknowledged that their brunch buffet yesterday was not the experience they strive to provide and emphasized that their management team has seriously reviewed how to improve. He issued us a full refund and offered us the opportunity to return for a fully-comped meal. I appreciated his reaching out and will give them another chance. ----------- Ate at Sugarbacon for Easter brunch. The buffet was ok, but really nothing special, especially for an Easter buffet. Mimosa flight was nice. Service was fine. We have eaten here several times in the past and usually enjoy the food and the experience. The main problem we had today was we noticed our bill seemed exceptionally high. Unfortunately, we noticed after we'd left that an additional 20% service charge had been added to our check. We had tipped 20% on top of that! By the way, we were only a party of 4, splitting the check 2 ways. I called the manager when we got home, and he explained they sometimes add the 20% extra service charge on holidays and busy times. He just said we should have read the receipt more closely. I guess it's our mistake for not noticing the extra 20% charge, but we will definitely never go back to Sugarbacon. There are much better options in McKinney. read more

I really like Sugarbacon, the one other time I have been here was for brunch. This particular time we bellied up to the bar to have some food and drinks. To start, a couple of mimosas. For entrée I ordered the Short Rib which comes with Mashed potatoes, red wine sauce, chives. The short rib was really tender and flavorful and the red wine sauce was a nice touch to add to the juiciness to "sop" up with your mashed potatoes. Also ordered was the Long Bone Pork Chop-Peach reduction, frisée salad, candied pecan. Both dishes were a hit, my only qualm would be I would've liked my mashed potatoes with a little more seasoning and fluffiness. read more

Came here on Sunday specifically for the Sugar bacon, sadly they had run out!!! which is odd considering 1. It's the restaurants namesake and 2. it's listed as a popular item here on yelp, so it's maddening how a restaurant can run out of a popular item such as this, but anyway...... Ordered the Ribeye tacos and Grilled Bone-in pork chop, the Pork chop was fine, nothing to write home about, like i said it was fine, but the Ribeye tacos on the other hand were bland, the flavor that stood out the most was the sour cream placed on top, i saw the beef, but i couldn't taste it and if there was feta cheese I didn't taste that either. I did have a speciality cocktail, i believe it was Fools Gold or Honey Gold (something like that) and I didn't taste either the honey or lemon that was supposed to be in it, the alcohol to non-alcaholic ingredient ratio was way off and simply tasted like the main ingredient out of the bottle. Obviously not impressed with this place and I try to support non-chains but this is a miss and i will not be coming back and I won't be recommending this to anyone. read more

We had an amazing date night here. The ambiance was perfect, service was great (we had Jess W as our server) & even the management stopped by to check on things. We started off with fried green tomatoes & deviled eggs, both amazing. My husband had the salmon, which he raved about & I had risotto & asparagus, all great. My only takeaway was no vegetarian entree, but what was I expecting with a name like Sugarbacon! The two sides were plenty enough to make an entree out of! When my cousin, told me we were coming here- I was immediately worried because of the name "bacon" - I don't eat, bacon or any other animal. I left full as a tick & so happy. From there we started with the sugar bacon and it was really tasty. The sauce was almost like a tikka masala sauce instead of BBQ and the meat fell apart like a pot roast. Very flavorful. We came there on a Sunday evening when it was not that busy and yet it still took over an hour for our food to come out after waiting an additional 30 minutes for our server to come back and take the order l. Then the food was over cooked and we constantly had to find our server because they kept forgetting our drinks and refills after we were asking for them constantly and forgotten sauces on everyone's order. PHENOMENAL SERVICE AND FOOD! We have been thinking about trying this place since before the pandemic but only got to go now, we ordered their pork ribs as a starter which was a pleasant surprise, we did not think it would be so good, my wife, who is not a pork rib person devoured it almost alone. Our server was well-equipped to inform us of the specials along with any question on the menu. he even helped oder a special drink for my pregnant wife. Let me start with I don't do bad reviews, typically I just won't go back. Today was my second time coming here. We went a month ago with a party of 10 (we had a reservation) and we were told that the kitchen is backed up despite the place looking only 40% full. We waited almost TWO hours for food. Apology after apology and no food. They told us this doesn't ever happen, we finally got our food and it actually was pretty good. Fast forward to today. I went to celebrate my birthday with my family, we thought we would give them another try. (Again with a reservation) SAME THINg happened. Except it was worse. We ordered biscuits to start and it took 30 minutes. My poor kids were starving. A full hour went by and the same excuse! The manager was apologetic at first and then got defensive that "well you guys are a party of 10" I'm sorry what? Why take a reservation if you can't handle it? The restaurant was DEAD. We went to the bathroom and the kitchen staff was not backed up, they were barely working! NO SENSE OF URGENCY. I have never walked out before, our whole family told the manager that if in 15 minutes it doesn't come out we are leaving. (He kept telling us 5 more minutes 8 times) So after waiting now and hour and a half for no food we finally decided to leave. As we were leaving we had to flag someone down to pay for our drinks and biscuits. The younger manager FINALLY told us the truth. They have had MAJOR staffing issues and couldn't handle even 50% capacity yet they were still choosing to not turn people away. Moral of the story. I wish I knew this, so I'm sharing with you, avoid this place at all costs. They don't care if you have to wait, your lucky if you get your food, don't take kids there if you do go, and most likely they will be out of a lot of food. Disappointed. We've eaten there before and had a much better experience. I can't say whether this is a one time thing or it is going downhill. On the positive side, the brussels sprouts were amazing, the short ribs sandwich was very good and the truffle fries were definitely worth coming back for. Unfortunately on the negative side the deviled eggs were not very tasty and the signature pork belly was mediocre. I remember it from the last time we were there and it was much better. This place is new and modern and has a cool vibe. I ordered the spicy margarita drink and burger recommended by server. The burger was okay, the meat was "crumbly" and didn't stay together. My side dish came out incorrect but they did fix that quickly. Overall I think the place is okay but it's a little pricey for some of the menu items that are pretty average. Cheese & Mac: I e had pretty good renditions of this dish before but theirs was a slightly different take on it with a slightly different flavor. Shrimp Louis Salad: This salad almost didn't need any dressing it was that good. The shrimps were fresh as was the veggies. Butterscotch Banana: This was probably one of my favorite deserts I've had. Great experience beginning to end. The host and servers were very accomodating when it came to our patio seating request and followed up with any requests made afterwards. Our server made excellent recommendations and we already can't wait to go back to try what was left. The food: The sugarbacon appetizer is a MUST- this is coming from someone that doesn't always love pork belly. It was cooked perfectly and the watermelon is a refreshing touch. Had dinner on 1/21/23 at this restaurant. Very disappointing after hearing some good things. Started with my wife's glass of wine, $13 for a glass of Meomi that was at best a 3oz pour and more like 2oz. Took 20 minutes to get our sugar bacon appetizer and we ordered our meal at the same time and that came out another 20 minutes after the appetizer. Our waiter seemed annoyed when we asked for ice for our water and when we asked for salt and pepper for the table. Pork Chop was dry and cold and ribeye tacos were over cooked and well done is ruining a ribeye Several times I saw our waiter just standing at hostess stand or bar chatting away while water or drinks could have used a refill. So I had to go to McKinney early today for a meeting. We live about 5 miles west of Justin so, it's a long haul. I only had a light breakfast and a couple of cups of coffee so had a pretty sizable appetite. After the meeting wrapped up my wife and I really wanted something to eat, so we started looking for a place that had something different. Settled on this place. Quick check of the menu and I decided I'm going to order four appetizers and call it lunch. What a great choice. I love doing that as it gives me a chance to sample a number of menu items. They brought them out two at a time; we had the pork belly and fried green tomatoes. Second round we had the tater tots and the jalapeño mac & cheese. My daughter is a CIA trained chef from the Hyde Park location. I've cooked quite a bit since I was seven. It's often difficult for us to go out because most often I can cook better than the average restaurant. This place did not disappoint. Everything was extremely pleasant to eat, had very good flavor and was extremely fresh. Everything was served at a proper temperature and extremely well presented. Both front of the house and back of the house were a well oiled machine. After we ate we were closing out the tab and Herman came up to chat with us. In my opinion that's the sign of a really professional organization when someone who is empowered to make a change comes over and actually spends the time and talks with you. We traded some really good stories. What an extremely personable gentleman. Unfortunately I live about 60 miles; an hour and 20 minutes away. But I'm going to look for excuses to go back. I ate here a few times this week, had a few different dishes. The shrimp linguine was good but nothing special. I don't recommend the short rib.Mine was cold in some spots and very bland. The meal lacked a flavor profile. The service depends on the server you get. One server was great. She was very attentive and took great care of us. The next server no so much. For $14 The grits weren't even properly cooked, they were crunchy and dry and I didn't even get two Benedicts like you traditionally would I got one and then the other side of the biscuit was just dry with nothing. My egg didn't even run when I cut it open it was way over cooked and was a hard boiled egg on the inside... That's not how poached eggs are. Someone else ordered the salmon bagel and her bagel was so hard it sounded like she was hitting a rock, she could not even cut through it. I'm pretty sure they put a stale bagel on her plate and decided to call it toasted And then the apricot chicken sandwich that my boyfriend got... The chicken was so dry you couldn't even chew it We also got the watermelon and sugar bacon appetizer and it didn't even come with watermelon chunks like it was shown online it has a little bitty pieces that just look like tomato. Overall I will not be returning they have kept their prices high but have cut quality.
