SUMMARY Yet another Chinese bakery in So Cal. After awhile, they all taste the same so the service and cleanliness will set them apart. Sunmerry Bakery is a popular chain in Taiwan FYI and this one (according to the wife) is just as good as the one in Taiwan. Service was excellent and we'd have no problem going back again. BACKGROUND On our last bittersweet visit to LA in September 2018 (funeral), we still managed to have a great time visiting friends in the area. On our drive from Irvine to the SF Bay area (now home), we dropped by the closest open Chinese bakery for some breakfast and for some coffee. FOOD AND DRINK We got an assortment of our favorite pastries for the road as well as two Americanos. Despite that I'd be driving the whole way, I got just about the messiest thing I could get. It's a bun topped with a light butter layer and pork sung. What's pork sung you ask? The description I've seen in English describe it as "pork floss". Yes, floss. But all it is is dried pork that's almost like hair texture, but it sorta balls and clumps up (sorta) with some other ingredients (namely sugar or some other sweetener). It's tastier than I'm describing and it's especially good on congee. And it's doubly good on a road trip. Why? Well you're gonna get some crumbles on your shirt while eating and driving---and about 2 hours afterwards when you look down on your shirt, you can pick off the crumbs and have a little snack. Haha! (I'm not joking and don't judge: I know you all have done something similar on road trips, you heathens!) SERVICE Excellent. It was a seamless process to order and they asked us how we'd like our pastries bagged up. When my wife brought the Americanos to the car, I picked mine up to have a sip before putting it in gear but the lid was loose. No matter how I tried to seal up the top, the top wouldn't seal on the top of the cup. I walked it back to the counter and the gal working the coffee machine made me a fresh cup with a cup that could seal. RETURN VISIT? Oh yes, definitely. We liked this place, though I do have a preference for 85 Degrees for certain pastries that this place didn't have. But Sunmerry is definitely a good place to go and especially if you can't find parking where 85 Degrees is and/or the line is insanely long. read more

Decided to change things up and ordered a birthday cake from here this past wknd. Picked up a strawberry & cream 8 inch cake for $28.00. It tastes pretty good; similar to that of 85 degrees. Also saw some blog videos about this bakery's famous "rainbow roll" and bought 2 of those. Luckily, they didn't sell out of them yet, by the time I arrived around 1130 am. They actually had to bring some from the back, because the display case outside was empty. Phew! :) Next to their cash register, they have a list of their top sellers, so we picked up some: 1) pork bolo bao - interesting concept 2) chicken cheddar bun - filling and lots of chicken chunks 3) red bean mochi bun - didn't get to taste it 4) black sesame mochi bun - didn't get to taste it 5) strawberry puff pastry - delicious and puffy 6) passion fruit pudding in a jar - so good :) 7) rainbow rolls - these were good and fun to eat! read more

This was my first time at this bakery which consequently, I found on Yelp. I was looking for a nice dessert to take to a barbecue. This place is a gem. Their selection ranges from tiramisu, to Black Forest cake, a walnut cake and a few others. I chose the mango mouse and it was a hit. Everybody had seconds and there was no left overs. It was a little hard for a first timer to navigate the tiny store. I made some selections, but some items were not labeled, so it was hard to figure out what they were. Some items just looked unappealing in view of my American background. Other items were intruiging, like a black sesame product in a big jar, which I have no idea how I'd consume. Sweet and savory items sat side by side. When it came time to check out, I was confused. Numbers were being called out, apparently, for custom beverage orders. Other customers like me with baked items in their hands were just standing around waiting. I didn't know from body language cues if I should walk up to the cashier or if others were ahead of me. 4.5 How did I forget to write a review on a place I frequent almost on a weekly basis LOL So again, living by all this food is a struggle HAHA but I survive. Of course moving here, I would yelp all sorts of places by me and Sunmerry popped up. I'm always curious about other bakeries since everyone praises 85C. It's good, don't get me wrong I enjoy 85c but I want to try others especially without the clusterfuck lines. I've never seen one at Sunmerry . The only thing CF about coming to Sunmerry, is coming at peak hours within the shopping center, since everyone comes for Taiko mainly. I laugh every time I come before they open, because people seriously sit out there with lawn chairs almost 2 hours prior pssssssh. Anywho back to Sunmerry, every time I come in, I'm greeted , especially by the ladies who work there. I'm such a regular, we have small convo when there's no line. So the service has always been on point for me. I've never been disappointed with the breads here. Ok well one. I'm not a fan of the BBQ Bolo and that's my own personal fear of char siu pork literally not made fresh out the kitchen at a sit down eatery and the rolls usually remind me something from a panadaria instead of those buttery shinny rolls I still remember from Bao dim sum house in WeHo :D So everything from the pastries, cakes and box cakes are so good. I brought taro cakes, strawberry crème cakes and green tea cakes to my friends girlfriends family Christmas party and they loved them and savored each bite making love to it and telling me how thankful they were bringing them treats :p So besides the BBQ bolo's, I love Sunmerry and the only thing I wish they had, was boba. I offered to bring the dessert to one of my friend who was throwing a dinner party. I looked far and wide to find a great dessert that can compare to my friend's cooking. I was so excited when I came across this bakery and saw the Japanese pudding in those cute little mason jars. They were about $2.80 per bottle and I thought it would be a perfect choice. I decided to pre-order 12 jars of Japanese pudding the day before. They come in four flavors. They come in strawberry, passion fruit, chocolate and green tea. I decided to get 3 jars per flavors. The Japanese pudding comes in three layers. The bottom starts with caramel, then pudding (this is more creamy pudding), and ended with the flavors with some jelly in it. I think green tea only has red bean no jelly on top. I thought these puddings were delicious. I really enjoy them. I also brought a taro milk cake from here and it was great also. My parents who are hard to please...love it. If you're a fan of taro you would have to try it. It has a big layer of pure taro right in the center of sponge soft cake. They wrote that it is Asia's best seller. This bakery has tons of choices. They have bread like 85 degrees, raindrop cakes and also have regular cakes. I bought only 1 coffee Brioche because it seems like special, however, I still prefer going to 85 degree for goodies than going here. Happy Lemon tea is located inside this bakery store and we ordered 2 green tea with sea salted cheese foam because we want to try the cheese foam in this location to see whether it is good or not. And, the answer is no. I recommend you guys should go to Happy Lemon in Rowland Heights which has better cheese foam and the quality of drink is much more better. Came here on Sunday afternoon around 2pm and picked up some baked goods. We picked up a varieties of baked items to try. They ran out many items when we were there such as the egg tarts. Everything was good. The only item that I didn't like was the baked hot dog. It was some kind of mayonnaise or cheese sauce on it. The line was long but it moved pretty fast. Sunmerry is your typical Asian grab and go bakery, except everything here is delicious. If you've never been to one, just grab a tray and tongs, use the tongs to grab anything you'd like, and pay for everything at the cashier. Sometimes there are sales like buy 6 get one free. I don't have a single gripe about anything I've tried. My favorites are the salty? cheese cake, chicken cheese bun, garlic bun, and milk bolo. Located in the same plaza as A&J Restaurant in far East Irvine, Sunmerry Bakery appears! It reminds you of a 85C meets Bread Farm (the one inside 168 Market and 99 Ranch Market)....actually it reminds me a lot of Bread Farm. They have random breads and pastries here and they have adorable little jars there (see Sammi's review). What I ended up getting here: Taro mochi- it's shaped like an oval. LOL. Iono how to describe it xD. But they have a subtle taro taste and I didn't get overwhelmed with mochi. This was their #3 or #4 top seller, but if I were to get it, I'd go to JJ Sweet Bakery (either across the street or the one in the OTHER 99 Ranch Market plaza on Culver). They also have a garlic bread which definitely had enough garlic in there. And butter. :3 They are really nice and have promotions going on there! They had a buy $15 get some coupon (I forget u_u) and they also have a 1/2 price 730-930am bread on M,Tu,W. This review has a little of everything: The good. The bad. And...the ugly. It's a long read, so if you're interested, get comfortable & enjoy the ride. The Good: Like everyone else in the Class of 2020, my "partner-in-crime's" original graduation plans were put "on-hold," due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, we celebrated his accomplishment of completing graduate school with an (intimate) surprise quarantine-themed graduation "party" - all while following guidelines of "social distancing." A must-have was cake, so I ordered a special cake to commemorate these unprecedented times...a cake shaped like one of today's most coveted items: A roll of toilet tissue!!! The Bad: Approximately a week in-advance, I ordered the highly coveted "Toilet Paper Cake" from "Sunmerry Bakery" (Irvine), received my confirmation number, & (knowing the high demand for this particular cake), I confirmed (again) a couple of days before pick-up. When I arrived to pick-up, I noticed that the small bakery was clean, & there was a nice selection of pastries & drinks. But here's when things got bad: Without making an effort to contact me in-advance to notify me of the bad news they were about to deliver, they waited until I drove over to pick-up the cake to tell me that they had "forgotten" to order the cake materials, & then proceeded to offer me a (slight) discount on a more generic-looking cake. In short, there was no "Toilet Paper Cake." My heart sank. Because the graduation party was a "quarantine-themed" party (just a few hours away), a generic cake just wouldn't suffice. Needless to say, I was not happy. After I insisted, they then made an effort to get me my cake. They promised that the Roland Heights (RH) location would have the cake, & that I would receive a discount for the inconvenience. After going back-&-forth re: whether or not & how to have the cake delivered to me, I wanted to avoid further delay, so I decided to make the additional 30 mile drive from Irvine to RH in hopes that the cake would be waiting for me. The Ugly: As promised, their sister location (RH) did have the cake waiting for me. But...to add insult to injury: They (RH staff) then claimed to know nothing about a discount - even after speaking with the Irvine location. I paid full price & left...annoyed, but relieved to finally have the cake. Conclusion: I understand things have been challenging for everyone due to this pandemic. However, it would have been nice if this business had made a simple phone call the day before (or even that morning) to inform customers that they had "forgotten" their cake orders. Simple common-courtesy & follow-through would have been nice. Tip: For "regular" items, the baked goods & drinks look pretty good. But...if you place a special order for a special occasion, be sure to: (1) Order in-advance; (2) Confirm a few days before; (3) Confirm (again) on the day-of pick-up; & (4) Have a back-up plan...just in case. On a positive note: The bakery did appear clean, had a nice variety of items, & (in the end), they did make an effort to get my cake. And speaking of the cake.....that cake was sooo good. The 4-chocolate chiffon sponge cake layered with Oreo filling & covered with white chocolate was moist, not overly sweet, & tasted like a dream. It was amazing, & our guests couldn't stop talking about "That Cake." It's no wonder that "it initially sold out in 2 hours!" This is probably my new favorite bakery AND it comes with happy lemon inside :) Their breads are very unique and a couple of my favorites include the earl grey croissant, chicken Parmesan, and cheese hot dog danish. I've also tried the matcha croissant and Sunberry which are good as well. They have a loyalty program so you can rack up points for discounts every time you make a purchase. It's linked to your credit card and phone number/ email so the points automatically get added when you swipe for payment if you use the same card. Additionally, they have stamp cards for happy lemon so you buy 9 drinks and get the 10th one free :) I usually get the green tea with salted cheese foam (sounds weird but so good) and make sure you get it with the plastic lid (not sealed) to properly enjoy the tea since it's not supposed to get mixed. Sunmerry is a great place to get Japanese and Taiwanese baked goods and boba drinks. I love their Black Sesame Milk Tea, BBQ Pork bun, black sesame mochi bun, cheese tarts, shiitake Mushroom cheese roll, and pineapple tarts. There are still so many of their cakes and treats that I haven't tried, but I keep coming back to try new things! From savory to sweet, the freshness of the breads fills the aroma of Sunmerry. The breads are flavorful, unique, and well priced. When ever fresh breads come out of the kitchen, you hear the staff yell "Fresh Breads!". It calls to you to look at what is coming out! Not only are there breads, but pudding, Asian fruit cakes, Japanese cheesecakes, and drinks (coffee, boba, ice tea's). TIP: Not everything is out right when they open at 7:30. They've also got the HappyLemon brand here, which is known for making salted cheese foam drinks. Sounds weird but it's pretty delicious. It's a must order when coming here. It is extremely refreshing and perfect before or after a meal. Staff treat customers with courtesy and respect, and are extremely responsive in making sure your drinks come out right. Lines tend to get long on the weekend but it goes by really fast. They have a punch card system for drinks if you decide to visit often. They recommend a lid rather than a straw to drink and enjoy the cheese. Getting our jasmine tea less sweet made the salted cheese even more enjoyable. As much I love their cakes here, I don't usually get them. My usual orders are 2 salted cheese green tea with ver little ice, regular sweetness (this drink isn't too sweet). And 4 plain bolo breads (pineapple bread). Finish the drink same day and finish the bread in 2 days. Put them in a ziplock bag when you get home (don't refrigerate). I also get 1 shredded pork bread. Not used to it being round (supposed to be oval shaped). This bread is best if finished same day or very next morning. I love two breads so much, I grew up eating them in taiwan. Boba and baked goods are my version coffee and donuts. I love how peaceful this location is in the morning, but it's definitely a to-go bakery because of the lack of seating. Note: The Happy Lemon at this bakery is not going to be the same as a full-fledged Happy Lemon. Pros: -Classic Milk Tea (5/5): Love it. The tea is very strong and the amount of creamer isn't overwhelming. Not watery at all. 70% sweetness is perfect for me. -Green Tea Croissant (4/5): The taste of green tea isn't super apparent. I wish it was stronger. I like that the bread is sweet on the inside with a slight crisp crunch on the outside due to the almonds and green tea crust. -Light Oolong Tea (4/5): The oolong tea is really strong. I got this at 100% sweetness and it was a good level of sugar. The color may be light, but the tea strength definitely isn't. Cons: -this HL location doesn't serve boba. -this HL doesn't serve tea before 10am, so if you need an early morning tea fix head across the plaza to 7Leaves -this HL has a more limited menu than your typical HL location. No mango matcha, unfortunately :( -HL (in general) is a smidge more expensive than other tea places. I'm convinced their Medium sizes are smaller than average. -Kumquat Lemon Green Tea with Lychee Jelly (3/5): Normally this is one of my favorite drinks at Happy Lemon. But the one I got even with 70% sugar tasted overwhelming like lemons to the point where I thought I was drinking lemonade. Go for even less sweetness, because the tartness was too overpowering. Sunmerry is yet another Asian bakery in Irvine. Similar to 85 degrees, Sunmerry is originally based in Taiwan and offers a vast selection of pastries and breads. However, Sunmerry pales in comparison to its Taiwanese counterpart for the following reasons: - Variety is limited. - We tried the chocolate chiffon cake and the walnut bread, and both were bland. Yes, they were less greasy than 85 degrees but at the expense of being tasteless. - The staff members are less friendly and not very attentive to customers. - The store is much smaller than the 85 degrees location in Irvine. There is no available seating to enjoy your baked items. I suggest skipping Sunmerry and sticking to the more famous 85 degrees. read more

Sunmerry is Asian bakery with drinks: think 85 degree or Paris Baguette. But I have to say, the standout thing for Sunmerry isn't Sunmerry itself, but Happy Lemon, which is probably my favorite milk tea place in the OC. Yes, that is a bold claim, I know, but Happy Lemon milk tea has such good flavor. Their specialty is this "salted cheese" drink, which I haven't tried yet, but even though it sounds weird (believe me, I haven't tried it yet because it sounds weird) it is also one of their popular drinks, so I must imagine it must be good, right? I will try it next time, I promise, and update this review. I usually get the regular milk tea with the salted cream addition. That saltiness really brings out the flavor of the milk tea: I don't think I will have my milk tea there any other way. There is also a good number of yummy breads and pastries, though not as much vareity as other Asian bakeries. I also do think 85 degree is more fresh though. Actually, I know it is more fresh because the turnover of the bread is very high there and you can see that they are constantly baking. In fact, most of the bread you get is still hot from the oven. In all though, Sunmerry is pretty good for what it is. I say the only downside is the parking, but you can't blame Sunmerry for that. read more

I visited Sunmerry early one morning when going to Irvine. I've gone to the one in Temple City before and loved it, so I was glad to see one in the OC closer to home that also had a Happy Lemon inside. I was at Sunmerry before 10, which meant two very important things I wish I had known before : 1) They're still taking out their breads for the day at 10, so they didn't have the exact one I wanted and I had to wait until 10 for it to be ready. And 2) The Happy Lemon side of the bakery only serves coffee before 10, they'll serve tea after 10. It wasn't too big of a deal, because I was there around 9:40, but in case any of you try to go here earlier in the morning that's what I learned! Went to Sunmerry Bakery to get some desserts today. Saw shredded pork (pork sung) bao! Hubby said Sunmerry was just having more bread variety. I said Sunmerry saw my previous yelp review and accepted my recommendation. Woohoo! I also love the passion fruit pudding in the cute little glass milk jar. Refreshing and delicious. The lady told me they make the pudding fresh every morning. They sold out quick! The other pudding favors are chocolate, green tea and strawberry. The shredded pork bun is very, very yummy. My favorite Asian bakery of all time! Their various pastries have distinct yet light tastes at the same time, yet it's never oily or greasy. They're most known for their Green tea croissant, which tastes buttery and flaky, yet maintains the strong matcha flavor. Definitely a must-get every time I visit. If you're a "sweet pastry" type of person, their White chocolate latte bun and Black sesame mocha bun are bomb. I've had to queue up to pay at the cashier a couple of times, but don't let the line deter you! They make Happy Lemon drinks too and the line usually moves pretty fast. I alternate between ordering the Freshly squeezed lemon green tea and Black tea with salted cheese add boba. Pretty much everything in this place is made well. They have sweet and savory choices for pastries. Surprisingly, my favorite is the tuna in a croissant type bread. And I'm not into tuna. The pastries are freshly made and individually wrapped in a cellophane bag. The purchase can be placed in a box or bag based on your choice. Their black tea with foam topping is perfection. Their teas are freshly brewed and you are able to adjust sweetness level. They also have coffee options. I have not tried their cakes but they are pretty cakes with delicate details. Although there may a line outside, their turnaround time to have your drinks ready is pretty quick. So glad we found one of our go to places on Yelp. Definitely a place you would crave and return. They now officially have boba! I usually get the taro balls, but the boba texture was mediocre. But i think it's due to the shortage of staff and the whole covid 19 madness. Overall this is my favorite bakery, the bread is always fresh and the size is much bigger than what you get at 85 degrees. read more
