Sunmerry is my favorite Asian bakery in the area. It is not as large as the other chains but the quality of their cakes and breads are better. My favorite bread is the plain bolo. It is slightly distant from the traditional bolo. The crust topping is sweet and tasty and the bread is light and buttery. I recently tried the taro cake as well and loved it as well. The cake was light with 2 different types of filling, one was taro and the other was fruity. The frosting was light whipped cream vs a traditional heavy buttercream. The bakery is located in a strip mall so there is plenty of parking. Go earlier in the day as the pickings become slim in the late afternoon. I like the breads and deserts here, but I dislike a few of their employees. It seems like some of those employees will pass out if you ask for extra plastic bags. This lady looked at me like I said the prohibited words "more bags". Followed by a distorted facial expression of "I'm offended by what you just said." The ham n cheese had a good filling to bread ratio which I appreciated. The matcha croissant was flakey but the only matcha part about this would be the matcha powder on top. I went to preorder a tiramisu cake from this Sunmerry Bakery location in Irvine on 12/20/22 but was told by the cashier that they were no longer taking preorders, despite the signs outside and inside the store urging customers to preorder for pick-up. I even asked if ordering online was still available or not and was told a resounding "no". Well turns out, you can still order online because I did that through their website which directs you to Toast. I ordered my cake for pickup on 12/23/22. I didn't want to chance them being sold out because that has happened to me before when I didn't preorder. Well they weren't sold out that day, but when I gave my name and order number, my order was pulled from the back kitchen area and brought to the front. They gave me a few plates, serving utensils, candles, and decorations with the cake. I brought the tiramisu cake ($35) to my parents' Christmas Eve luncheon and it was a hit! My mom even took some leftovers so I know she liked it. She almost always decides against it but this time she decided on some. That's a win in itself. I came for the egg tarts can't say I'll get it again. It's HK style except the ones I had tasted pretty cooked eggy if that makes sense. The service was truly a hit and miss. The woman with long black hair at the register was packaging egg tarts into take home containers. So when she asked me what I needed I asked for one box of egg tarts. I've been a loyal customer here for years, always enjoying their coffee and bakery treats. However, I recently had an experience that left me incredibly disappointed. I asked for light ice in my coffee, as I've done regularly twice a week for over a year. This time, a random staff member took my cup, set it aside, and waited for everyone else to finish their orders before telling me--after a 20-minute wait--that they don't allow light ice (which is clearly not the case according to the menu). When I mentioned I've always been able to get light ice, I was told it's against their policy (despite signs everywhere saying I could), and that it had been this way for years and I should have been allowed to skirt this rule the entire time. I was surprised by the sudden change and how dismissive the random staffer was about my request. After a mixed experience at the location in Garden Grove, I wanted to check out the Irvine location and give the bakery another chance. (Especially as the Garden Grove location didn't stock all of the items I was looking to try.) It's located in the same plaza as Shibuyala and a couple of other businesses. It can be challenging to find parking, but if you pick a day and time when it's not a peak meal time, you can usually find a spot. This location is also on the smaller side and can only allow a few customers at a time, due to capacity limits. I came in before a father and daughter did and the staff closed the doors to indicate that they were at capacity. Staff greeted everyone politely; one girl was on the register and the other was restocking the shelves as I browsed. I did come around 4 PM, which means they didn't have everything available, but the trade off was a quieter time for the bakery and parking lot. I did manage to find the Nutella Bolo, Green Tea Croissant, Almond Croissant, and the Pudding Bun, which Garden Grove didn't have. Transaction was quick and I was out of there in under 5 minutes. Nutella Bolo was light and is great when heated up slightly. (So the center melts.) Almond Croissant had a good almond flavor that was well balanced and not too overpowering. Green Tea Croissant was more subtle in flavor, but still flaky and light. Pudding Bun was a little too doughy and sweet, but I may have lost my fondness for the pastry, due to preferences. As this location is a bit closer to me, I'll likely be stopping in more if I'm in the area. read more

This place never lets me down!! Unlike other bakeries, the pastries here are never overly sweet and neither are the salted cheese drinks. We make the 25min drive when there's nothing else to do for the drive and nice midday treats. The chicken cheddar is our go-to, even when preparing for road trips. Perfect savory snack to hold you down for a while. We tried the Strawberry Green Tea with Salted Cheese and it was delicious (too bad it was only available in Medium). We also got our normal Jasmine Green Tea but tried without the Salted Cheese, and we realized how sweet the tea is alone...get the cheese or adjust your sweetness if you don't like drinking sugar... I came here to pick up some desserts on a Sunday afternoon. There was a little bit of people in the store. The only small complaint that I have is that it was sort of confusing if I could go into the store or if I should wait. An employee finally saw me and told me I should wait outside. Aside from the initial entering, I waited about 5 minutes outside before I could go in. The store is relatively small. They have pastries against the wall and some packaged items. I have had the boba cream puff before, so I definitely knew I wanted to get that. I also got the non-boba cream puff, some green tea cake and some mochi donuts. I was in and out within 10 minutes. As for the pastries, I know some people like the boba cream puff and other don't. I really enjoy them. They are light and flaky and the cream is not too sugary. The boba is also really chewy. The only thing is that it does not taste as good the next day, so I would definitely try eating them the first day. I also enjoyed their regular cream puff because the cream is not soo sweet. The only thing that I did not like as much was the mochi donut. I thought it was little bland and the mochi did not taste as good.
