A nice upgrade to the Asian bakery scene in SD with a variety of baked goods and refreshments. The space is small as you enter but enough to give you room to get your wanted item. There was barely room to sit and the seats were taken by customers waiting for their drinks on the other side, so I recommend the communal tables outside. I tried a cream puff and matcha croissant. They were both not that sweet and were freshly packaged. I do wish they restocked faster as a majority of items were gone and I waited around to see if anything else would come out. I sought after their Brioche donuts, but I was out of luck. This bakery is far in terms of location, so I wouldn't know if I'll revisit, but they have far nicer options than what I've come across already. read more

We love the new Sunmerry Bakery that's located in the Mira Mesa village area. We happened to visit it during its grand opening event. They had the promotion for receiving a $5 coupon when purchased more than $25. We went out and got a wide variety of pastries. Everything we bought was really good, including Taiwanese Bolo, filled Brioche Donut, and Garlic Cheese bread. Their bread is soft. Not too much butter or sweet. Excellent flavors. The sesame and custard brioche donuts are great. Highly recommend to try them. We also had their cream puffs which were also very good. We will be their regular customers! read more

This place is awesome! Like a higher quality 85C! I liked it so much that I literally went back the next day looking for more pork bolos but they sold out. I tried the Hokkaido cream cake/bread, taro mochi bread, ube concha, rainbow cake roll, black sesame brioche donut, cream danish, shiitake bread, and I bought more I haven't tried yet... The ube concha was very soft but a bit boring for me. That and the taro mochi bread were more bready and boring, though my kid liked the taro mochi. The bread was soft and spongey and could be gently squeezed and would bounce back. It was amazing but when I cut it open it had a huge cavity in the center so that was a bit disappointing. The mushroom bread was ok but needed to be heated up (update: toaster ovened it was divine). The sesame brioche donut had a good filling to donut ratio but the donut wasn't fresh (sat a few hours) and so it was rather chewy-tough. The pork bolo was insanely good heated the next day in the toaster. I made a mess eating it, it was so flakey. It was rich and had a beautiful meld of textures and I loved the way they do the pork filling. It's sweet and savory and the meat is tender and fine with no noticeable gristle or fat chunks. Just delicious rich meaty goodness in tender bread with a flakey pastry crust. I went back the next day for this rather close to closing and was not terribly surprised they sold out. This item was probably my favorite. A near tie for favorite was the Hokkaido cream cake. It doesn't look like much but I figured it was a must. OMG...the heavenly cream filling is very generous and compared to the cake it's dense. The cake is super tender and has a fine crumb. It felt like eating a cloud and was pure bliss. The rainbow cake roll was beautiful but felt denser. I was going to let it warm up to room temp but it turns out even eaten cold it was super tender with the same fine crumb. The cream filling looked, felt, and tasted like it had vanilla bean seeds flecking it. It was a perfect balance and I am going to get more SOON. Can't wait to try the boba! read more

Well First of all Sunmerry Bakery has 2 Locations This one in Mira Mesa and the other one in in Kearny Mesa this location is right in the Mira Mesa Mall which shares a big Parking lot with Marshalls and Sprouts and located next to Panda Express in Mira Mesa . My neighbor first info me about it, and I was stoked by this place. Cuz she shared with me with one of her goods when she tells me of it. And then fortune falls to me that I was up in this area for a board meeting and have time to spare!! OMG, I sure know the timing too. Arrived on a whim on a Saturday around 2pm and there wasn't too much left but enough for me to want to stay. I would suggest going in the morning. Chocolate concha was the best out of my choices, I loved the chocolate filling. Hot dog and croissant treats were good but also reminded me of 85 degree treats nearby, same concept too. My wife wanted to try Sunmerry Bakery and I wasn't too excited since there are so many similar tea, coffee, and bakery places (85c, Better Buzz, Paris bakery, etc.) in Mira Mesa already. I'm glad that I did. Sunmerry Bakery is a level above the rest of these places. The flavor and variety offer are amazingly tasty and true. Since they just opened and crazy busy, don't expect a smooth ordering and picking up process or well stocked products. In our case, the cashier forgot to give us our receipt so we kept having to come up to the counter to check on our order. Very confusing when my strawberry milkshake was the favorite among most orders. I'm certain that after 3 months, they will get everything straightened out. We'll be coming back for sure. read more

I really enjoyed the brioche donuts with the filling. I also noticed their bread overall was more fluffy. I tried the dalgona coffee since I saw it was a trendy drink online at some point. It was ok! There are some seats right outside if you want to enjoy your treat right away. I will say this bakery is quite small but I definitely am a fan of their pastries and will come back for sure. I visited Sunmerry in the afternoon at around 3pm on a weekend and found that it was expectedly busy inside but the displays were well-stocked. While I was inside deliberating what to pick, there was an employee who kept replacing empty bread selections and keeping things stocked. The interior itself is fairly small and cramped which makes it difficult to move around and look at the displays. I ordered a garlic parsley bread, chocolate concha, ube concha, and custard brioche donut. The garlic parsley bread was my favorite out of the pastries I picked out. The texture was fluffy and soft throughout the bread. The bread part itself was not garlicky sadly, but it still held a nice sweet and savory flavor. The garlic flavor is only on the topping spread. I likely wouldn't buy the conchas again considering I have had better ones at other Asian bakeries in the past. There was little flavor in the bread portion, though I did appreciate that it had a fluffy texture. The top crumbles a lot as a warning for those who've never tried a concha before. Most of the flavor came from the minimal amount of filling which only lasted around two bites. Lastly, the custard brioche donut was a letdown. The shell was not as flaky or crunchy as I expected. The donut itself also was bland and didn't have much taste to it. It wasn't sugary at all even with the sugar dusting. The custard was the only delicious part about it. For the pricing of the pastries and the quality, I would say it is comparable to 85 Degrees Bakery and has a different selection of pastries. It is on a more affordable side compared to Tour Les Jours for price per pastry. read more

I have been wanting to check this bakery for awhile because I used to stop by one in Irvine to get their pork shredded bread, it's the best. I was delighted to find out that a new Asian bakery was opening in Mira Mesa and came to visit during the soft opening. The location is convenient, within a large shopping plaza with plenty of parking. The store is tight and was quite packed when I visited during a random weekday in the middle of the day. I got four pastries to sample including the pineapple bbq bun, green tea crossaint, ube conche, and mochi black sesame bun. I bought the custard brioche donut, chicken and cheddar bread, Bolo bun, croissant shaped rolls , Bolo bbq pork bun, ube Bolo bun. All of the breads were so fresh and delicious! They are definitely giving 85 degrees some serious competition. My favorite was the ube bolo bun because it wasnt too sweet and it was so soft and pillowy. My other fav was the chicken and cheddar bread as it was very good too because it's savory and the bread had a garlicky flavor. You can't go with any form of fresh bread! They had a promotion for 10% off entire purchase and my family and I decided to try an assortment of sweet and savory pastries. Each pastry was delicious, I honestly have nothing bad to say. Service was also quick and staff was very friendly. Sunmerry shares a shopping plaza with neighboring restaurants and shops so there is always ample parking. Shop was also clean and organized. Came here because I was in the area. Didn't realize it's right by the local 85C Bakery, so no surprise that it'd be the basis of comparison for my review. All in all, the feel, look, and concept are all a mirror of 85C. However, the key difference is the variety - there are some notable repeats to the temperature-d twin, but there are more than a few different ones such as the BBQ bolo, donuts, and shiitake mushroom and cheese bread. Arguably all the baked goods are of equivalent quality for your simple, daily cravings curer. Would stop by here if you're looking for a change of pace from 85C. Ii came here for their soft opening and the cakes and decorations are pretty cute. The pastries I would say have a lot more flavoring and there are more cream filled pastries than your typical 85 degrees. I got two cakes to celebrate a birthday and they were not sweet at all! They tasted great with a thin layer of pudding between the layers to keep the cake moist. The service was quick and there's been a line everyday I drive by. I enjoyed all of them except for the mochi sesame, but this is also where I found out I don't really like sesame. My friend who tried it really enjoyed it though! They sell cakes, cake slices, sesame paste, and drinks. I'll definitely have to try the drinks next time as they all look tasty. Service is also super quick as well. We stumbled across Sunmerry on Sunday while shopping across the mall. They have a great variety of sweets and non sweets and the prices are very reasonable. We got a variety of items (everything from the mushroom roll to the ham and cheese bun) we ended up with about 8 items and our total was well under $20. I toasted my mushroom bun and added a little butter, 1st bite was a bit sweet but after that it was buttery and flaky (sort of like a croissant). My husband and son got the ham and cheese bun and loved it, it was flaky, rich and tasty. We also signed up for their frequent buyer program with our email and receipts complimentary cream bun (like a cream puff). Haven't tried it yet but if like everything else we bought I am sure it will be equally as tasty. The store is open and bright and it is easy to grab whatever looks good to you. Everything is individually wrapped and there is a case with cold items (including some beautiful desserts and cakes). The staff was so friendly and helpful. They recently opened (within the last week) and had some great suggestions based on what patrons we're looking for. I believe this is the 1st store here in San Diego (next closest is Irvine). I went during the soft opening so theres a few things theyre still dialing in. portuguese Egg tart - lots of filling and flakey crust! the filling tasted like flan. Different from the usual egg tarts availavle around here garlic bread - tons of garlic flavor. I wish it was a bit more oily/buttery and the bread itself seemed cold rather than warm. Frank bread - flavors were great, it was just weird that it was so hollow that you could prob fit 2 more hot dogs in there. I hope they fix this in the future. Cream top black tea - nice and refreshing! A bit pricey for what it is though. Arrived during the soft-opening, specifically for the pineapple cakes. I was pleasantly surprised to find a bright & airy Taiwanese bakery with a large selection of sweet & savory pastries & cakes. I counted over 60 different pastries, 30 different cakes, plus numerous tea drinks, smoothies & coffees. The pineapple cakes are pre-packaged & made at the Sunmerry bakery in Fort Lee, New Jersey. There are two sizes available: bite-size cakes in a bag; and square cakes in a box. Each size is also available to purchase individually. The square pineapple cakes are delicate with a buttery dough, chewy filling & are delicious. The bite-size cakes are mostly dough & not as flavorful. In addition to pineapple cakes, we also got Hokkaido cakes & two different filled brioche. The pastries & cakes are beautifully made, expertly baked & yummy. So why the 3-star review? Poor service. We arrived at 10:30am, 30 mins after the bakery opens & business is bustling. But even for a soft-opening, the service is lackluster. Since the cashier is the only employee to engage with, perhaps don't put an unfriendly cashier to interface with customers. I'm flexible enough to let one or two minor incidents slide; but not three in the less than 3-min transaction to purchase pastries. First, when I inquire about the cooler bag promotion prominently advertised in the front window, the cashier said they ran out - but, I could purchase one. Eh?? There were only 15 people ahead of us in line. So did you run out, or are they not free as advertised in the window?? I think maybe there's fine print I didn't read, and opt to purchase a cooler bag for $3.99. Two, when I tapped my card on the payment terminal, an automated prompt offered an instant loyalty reward for the purchase. However, the cashier cleared the screen & dismissed the unlocked reward since my $50 purchase didn't qualify. Eh??? Ok now, I'm getting annoyed. Particularly since by the time I walk outside, the same unlocked reward notification is in my email. Three, when I inquire about the $5 promotion coupon for making a $25 purchase that's advertised in the large window sign and social media; again, I'm curtly dismissed for not qualifying??? I'm not sure what hoops a customer needs to jump through to receive a Sunmerry promotion... but perhaps, stop offering so many if none of them are going to be honored! My son & I walked out to enjoy our pastries, but not so much the service. I might return again, when I need pineapple cakes for a special occasion. I have been anticipating coming from family recommendations of Taiwanese bakery. When we went there were a few bread selections. My go to is always the pork sung bun. So I grabbed a couple along with a BBQ bolo bao. Tip for free item: If you sign up for there rewards, they will give you a free Hokkaido cream puff. I think this is a limited time type of thing.
