The place is small, with probably about 10 2-4-seater tables & chairs. CASH ONLY! Sunset Bakery offers a good variety of asian pastries such as lemon, cream, and chocolate-filled cakes, pineapple buns, cookies, egg tarts, and much more. This includes asian birthday cakes! They have a lot of birthday cakes already prepared in a fridge next to the front counter - all made, ready to go! You have the option of the strawberry-only cake or mixed-fruit cake. I think for the price of a cake in general (or just Asian cakes I guess...), it's pretty cheap. A small cake serves 8-10 people and is $19. For $2 more ($21), it can serve 10-12 people. If you'd like a bigger cake, I highly suggest calling a week in advance or something. From the pictures, it seems like they also make wedding cakes! I bought the large mixed fruit cake ($21) and it was delish! It's filled with bits of melons, kiwi, oranges, strawberries, cream, and other fruits... Stopping in for some dessert after lunch at San Tung, I went straight for the Yelp-recommended strawberry cake. And, call me superficial, but I wasn't expecting much when I saw how simple and boring my slice of cake was. But, wow. If you're a fan of the Taiwanese style of cake making, then you'll definitely want to give these guys a try, as they nail the lightness, fluffiness, and tastiness, that you would expect of a legit Taiwanese cake. Diane, the shop owner is quite simply wonderful! First time visiting her shop. I walked in and she recommended a cocktail bun, which at other shops is a staple and what I would go for. I lacked enough cash to buy an array of her baked goods. I normally have some emergency cash in my backpack but searched and couldn't find it. (Only had credit cards on me) Barely had enough pocket change to buy a banana muffin $.85 cents. She accepts what little I had, and goes above and beyond! Char Siu (pork bun) is always good, Ham and corn is great, my favorite place to get it. It's bigger and better here, more corn and ham on this one than at Cafe Bakery, and cheaper. They have cakes here as well. Ever have a birthday, you can pre-order or just go on the day. I prefer "Asian cakes" just because they are less heavy on the cream. Costco cake is the worst. Another great find through Yelp. I ordered my wedding cake here based on all the positive reviews and can't be any happier. We got the fresh cream strawberry cake. The cake itself was as light as air, not overly sweetened and the cream and strawberries were really fresh. We were really pleased with the very reasonable cost for three layers compared to other wedding cake rival bakeries including Shubert's. Unfortunately, you will not be able to order square shaped layers nor be too picky about an intricate design, but if quality and taste is more important, this is your place. Sunset Bakery is a small modest bakery that stocks affordable Asian pastries. They don't tout the same fluffy-wuffy theme that the bakery branches like Sheng Kee and Kee Wah boast, which makes them more like a Chinatown bakery transplant. They have a mini baked pork bun for 70 cents that is less sweet than pork buns from Clement Restaurant. It just has slices of lean bbq pork in a mild "pork bun" sauce. No big chunks of onion, less fat than most pork buns. Each one comes on its own little paper-cup wrapper. (3+" wide) Order larger quantities a day ahead. I ordered 20 for this morning and had to wait an extra 15 minutes from when they said they'd be ready. (only an issue if you have to be somewhere at a certain time, which I did) They open at 8:00am on Sunday and can't have them ready until at least 9:00am. This review is specifically for their baked bbq pork buns which are excellent. They're a favorite item of our family, friends, and colleagues. This bakery has been here for decades and a few years ago I believe changed owners / bakers and the cha siiu bow ( pork buns) weren't very good. They were mostly all bread with little filling. I went back to Sunset to try them again & they're back to tasting very delicious!! I've gone back many times this year and they are consistently made with delicious bread, just the right amount of BBQ pork and not too sweet. If you have never tried BBQ baked pork buns before you must give them a try - it's like discovering donuts for the first time. And if you already love them, this is the place to buy them. read more

The people are really nice and run a good business. They are located in a busy area so parking was always hard to find. I recently purchased a 3 tier birthday cake from them and it was WAY cheaper than any other place ($200). They do deliver for a $50+ (minimum) depending on how far your location is, but I say get the cake on pillars and transport it yourself. Or that's what we did at least. Yes, it may be a bit of a stress factor, but we did it just fine without one single dent. Just make sure to have PLENTY PLENTY PLENTY of towels or THICK blankets and a CLEARED out trunk. You can see all the little holes and such on the cake, so they do not use the fondant that the majority of bakeries use out there now a days, so the visual quality isn't as great (-1 star), but hey ... you get what you pay for. (And to be honest, $200 for a 3 tier white cake with fresh fruit and cream filling -- I can say that we got more for our buck at this place.) You do have to return the pillars during the next following days or they will keep your deposit (they have you put down a deposit for them, ours was about $25). Also they must be clean or they take half of your deposit. I think that this is a great idea seeing as to how people don't ever need those pillars anyways ... they just get thrown away, when we had to pay extra for them. So instead you pay a deposit to "borrow" them and then return them when your done. Genius. Also this place is cash only, so if you did want to get a cake then the order must be placed at least 2 weeks in advance and paid in full with cash. The cake itself tasted great. The white cake was very soft and the filling, very creamy. The fruit still tasted very fresh and everyone was delighted. Although I have not had a chance to really try any of their other pastries, I might be going back in soon for a visit. If their cake was that good I'm going to assume that the rest of their selection is up to par as well. I'll be visiting again soon ... and as always if there's anything new, I'll update. I was wondering the streets with my cousins after my grandmother's funeral. We were all wearing suits/black. We felt out of place but just right because it felt like we were apart of the triad. Anyways, we walked up sunset Bakery after enjoying the foo fu Arizmendi Bakery. My cousin who is from SF recommended the strawberry sponge cake. Oh maaan. Our lovely neighbors decided to bring us back a box of pork buns. Char siu bao. I can only imagine how these things taste fresh out the oven. Probably one of, if not the, best bakery that I go to! Their pineapple and cocktail buns are always soft and fresh, so you know that they haven't been sitting in that little heater/oven box for very long. They also make some great cakes here...always very moist and light. They never get too heavy with the cream/frosting, nor is the taste overly sweet like some places. I haven't tried their mixed fruit cake (generally not a fan), but their strawberry cakes (with or without the kiwi) are good. But what I LOVE best about this place are their strawberry and custard pies! It's cheap, delicious, and full of awesomeness. This is a tiny bakery up on the corner of 9th street in the Sunset. There isn't much of a selection to view. However, there are some novelties, such as winter melon cake and Mexican buns. The winter melon cake has a texture like mochi and a cute story of being made by a man for his wife, which is why it is named after her. They do, in fact, have some standard pastries, but the stars are the Chinese pastries. Plus, the prices are unbeatable! Total hole-in-the-wall, but looks are deceiving. They provided me a beautiful three tier cake and sheet cake on time, exactly as requested (buttercream with a simple design and mixed fruit with a ribbon), and for about $350 bucks (188 guests). Come here for the traditional Chinese sponge cakes. Super fluffy and moist with a whipped cream and topped with fruit. Their buns leaves much to be desired. They're dense and chewy...not what you would expect from Chinese buns. Egg of the ham and egg bun was overcooked. Corn filling of corn bun is skimpy. There are better buns to be had! At one point in time, they were known for their egg tarts. Not any more...they crust is not flaky and is too thick. Milk tea is not great either. It's "rough" on the mouth and not smooth. Review isn't great so far right? Well here's where they pour salt on the wound. They insist you order the buns you want just so they can tell you they don't have it. So I ask them what buns they do have and the proceed to tell me to look at the menu. Dude...it's 5pm I'm a Sunday. I know bakeries run out of stuff.
