The Sunset Terrace is where I ate two meals while at the Grove Park Inn as it was the only place open for lunch. I had dinner here on arrival night and timed it for the sunset. I was placed at a high top and would not have made a reservation for that type of seating so the host didn't give me the table I reserved. The restaurant didn't have the lights on enough so it was dark and hard to read the menu. My waitress was very friendly and got me a tea right away. I ordered the filet mignon and got the mushrooms for a side. This came out to the table minutes after ordering so I felt that they were trying to rush me out. I didn't feel rushed by my waitress but the host staff that kept wandering by. My filet was cooked as ordered and the mushroom portion was generous. The filet was good and the plate came with two extra items from the chef, one was a pearl onion and I'm not sure what the other item was but I didn't like it. I was surprised that I liked the onion. I didn't have room for dessert but the waitress brought my a chocolate piece of cake. The strange part of feeling rushed when I arrived ended in a very long wait to get my check. It was at least an hour wait as the waitress was nowhere to be found. I watched others get seated, eat and depart while waiting. Lunch the next day, I had another friendly waitress and I went with the shrimp scampi. This version of it was not very good. The shrimp was great but there was too much pasta and not enough flavor. It was more creamy than an oil base. I wish I had gone with the salad again. I did have dessert and got the Coconut Tropical Cloud. It was the best part of the meal. Service was just ok as I wasn't even given a refill on my tea. There is room for improvement here.

Sunset Terrace was recommended to me and my husband by close friends who had visited Asheville a few weeks prior to our vacation. It definitely lived up to our expectations. The view is incredible but try to reserve your table before 7, if possible, before it gets dark outside. My husband ordered the Bone-In Ribeye with a side of carrots -- both of which were huge! I enjoyed the Sunset Spring Chicken that comes with brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. It was quite delicious, and the perfect portion size. The staff was friendly, and the restaurant offered a nice wine selection. I agree with other reviewers that you are paying for the view, but the food was delicious and the experience was wonderful. Highly recommend, and Bon Appétit!

Very pricey restaurant that has a fantastic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. My friend and I split the King salmon and the fried green tomatoes. I loved the fried green tomatoes, but the salmon was a bit over done for me. The portions were good because we both had enough to eat. Another dining companion had the scallops (over $50) and was shocked that it only included 3 scallops. The last person ordered the gnocchi and was happy with it. My friend had a glass of Malbec and enjoyed that very much. Water was refilled often, but our meals took a *very* long time to arrive, close to an hour! The view of the mountains made this worth the one time visit.

What can i say about this beautiful place?! The views are something out of this world and the service just as amazing! We were greeted as soon as we walked up the hostess area and were given a table with the most amazing view. I ordered the chicken and rice lunch entree and it was delicious. My rose spritz was also pretty yummy! Then we walked around the restaurant and took some pictures of the place. Parking was pretty easy too. You can valet or self park for a cheaper option. Btw, the restaurant gives you blankets when it's chilly outside.

Ignore all the other reviews and read this one. You should come here for the view, not for the food. The view is spectacular and worth booking a reservation. The food is mediocre and the chef could not properly cook my steak to medium rare. He had two chances. My advice, come here but order cheap. The salads look expensive, but they're massive. The steaks are wildly overpriced. I recommend ordering one entree and sides to share, if you're dining with a partner. If you can ask for Heather, she is a phenomenal waitress. She gave my wife and I the best service we've ever experienced. She knew my steak was overcooked the first round and that it was undercooked the second round. She was very attentive and extremely personable. I would dine here again just because I know she would offer my wife and I a very pleasant experience. The quality of the steak is good (prime), but they don't do anything worth $100 for a $30 cut of meat. No rosemary/thyme or any sense of basting that was done. Seems like a cut and dry salted steak with a decent sear. If you're into that, go ahead and spend $100. My wife absolutely loved her Chilean Sea Bass. It's is fluffy from sous vide and has a nice crunch with a good sear. It did not taste as fresh as I prefer (I'm from Florida coast/New England upbringing) I'm used to caught same day - never frozen. But, she said it was the best texture combination she's ever had. She's not easy to please, so this was a big deal. Get it with the chimichurri. The Mac and cheese was very good. The asparagus was good. The French onion soup was not very good at all. I didn't know it's something that could be messed up, but they found a way to make it bland. The coconut cloud dessert was very good!! The bread is also awful. It reminded me of the cheap rolls you buy frozen at a grocery store. I hope this helps someone approach this experience in the best way, so it's not tainted by the food/prices because the view and experience truly are spectacular.

Okay, so you wouldn't come here unless you were staying in the property. I am always very leery of hotel food, but I was a little impressed. And this because I was expecting food with no flavor. However, it was quite the opposite. Sometimes too much flavor. Like the honey mustard butter for the rolls. The rolls were already sweet, so the butter with the honey mustard combo was just not my preference. However, the salmon accompanied by bok choy, carrots and radishes was perfect! The broth that it cake with just took that flavor up several notches. Drench ever bite in that broth. That's where the salt is that you need. Service was the usual hotel service that's perfectly staffed. Several people tending to your needs. Ambiance was nice especially if going around sunset. Then it gets very dark and the little battery operated candle on the table is just for show, not light. It can get chilly on the terrace, they offer blankets for cover. $58 total bill, no cocktails, or apps, just good old fashion hotel tax. Service staff is diverse. Diners not so much.

Dinner with the best view in Asheville. I had lunch- depending on the day and time, you may need reservations. Lobster Cobb salad was yummy. The food and view are on point. My only negative- the price is very high.

I had an incredible time at the Sunset Terrace restaurant at the historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. All seating is outdoors on a covered patio overlooking the hotel's golf course and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The wait staff is exceptionally accommodating, helpful and willing to answer any questions and take pictures to commemorate special milestones for the patrons. While the dining area is covered to protect diners from rain, please be aware that the sun will most likely be in your eyes if you choose to dine in the early evening. The food at Sunset Terrace was truly exceptional. The generous portions ensured that we left the restaurant fully satisfied. As we were there to celebrate our anniversary, we were pleasantly surprised with complimentary champagne and a delightful dessert. If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary or feel like treating yourself, definitely visit the Sunset Terrace.

A beautiful place for lunch and I'm sure even more beautiful for dinner. The food was great, left me with a smile on my face after the first bite. Service was perfect, checked on us enough but not too much to interrupt the meal. Drinks were delicious.

We had a 9:15 reservation and was seated at 9:00. At first we thought we weren't going to get the stellar service because it was late and it took awhile for someone to come to our table, but we were wrong! Service was phenomenal! Our waiter was attentive and kind, very descriptive about the menu and honest. The food was just as he described. I LOVED my salad. His steak was delicious. Tender and flavorful. The sides were way more than enough. The pork belly tasted like a mix between bacon and ribs. Delicious

Wow, the server makes all the difference. The venue is beautiful, the views are wonderful, however the contrast in service was HUGE from one night to the next. My mind was blown. We ate at the Sunset Terrace on two separate nights of our vacation. Monday Night - 2 stars. Didn't want to go back. The server had the attention span of a toddler. Unfortunately, it was my birthday dinner and she forgot that also. I had the filet and my spouse had the salmon, the server mixed up our temperature. The French Onion Soup is a definite pass. Tuesday Night- 5 stars. We had the Ricotta Gnocchi and the Server recommended adding shrimp and it was delicious. We skipped the appetizer so we could order dessert and had the Nutella Peanut Butter Bar. The experience was near perfect. To be honest, I never knew how important a great server meant until this trip.

My husband and I came here on our last night of vacation. The service with Alyssa and Lauren was impeccable. Every member of staff was accommodating and friendly. We enjoyed the wine by glass list, our fried green tomatoes, perfectly prepared medium rare filet, Brussels and mashed potatoes. Everything was perfect and the view is unbelievable from this restaurant. I highly recommend a fancy dinner here.

Ask the Community - Sunset Terrace

Would a 3 almost 4 year old and 16 month old "fit in"?

Is it appropriate to just order drinks here or is it definitely a sit down meal place? (Our Reservation is late for dinner)?

I would say it's more of a 'sit down meal' type of place but with a late reservation, it would probably be ok to just have drinks. If it were prime dinner time, I'd say dinner would be best. Their drinks are pricey so I'm sure the wait staff will… Read more

I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

Worth Planning Your Asheville Trip Around…read more As a Bay Area foodie, navigating around San Francisco's incredible restaurant scene taught me to appreciate thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Chestnut had been on my Asheville dining list long before I arrived, and after spending several days exploring Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I made it my dinner splurge before heading home. It absolutely delivered. A quick tip: skip the hunt for street parking and head straight to the garage across the street. The first hour is free, and downtown Asheville can be congested with both vehicle and foot traffic. I arrived around 5:30 without a reservation and was warmly greeted by the hostess, who offered me a table or a seat at the bar. Asheville was surprisingly hot and humid compared to the cool mountain weather I'd been enjoying, so the air-conditioned dining room was an easy choice over the sidewalk patio. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers, warm lighting, elegant stone countertops, comfortable booths, tables, and bar seating create an atmosphere that feels polished without being stuffy. What stood out most was the mix of guests. There were locals greeting staff by name, couples enjoying date night, families with children, and older guests gathering with friends. It felt welcoming and comfortable for everyone. As a solo diner, the bar was the perfect choice. I enjoyed all the energy of the restaurant while still having a peaceful dining experience. I started with a glass of Brut Rosé from Spain. Crisp, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to settle in after a warm afternoon. Then came the Lobster Bisque. As someone who has made lobster bisque from scratch, I know the work that goes into creating a great one. Chestnut's version, made with Oak & Grist Reserve Cream and finished with fresh chives, was outstanding. Rich, silky, velvety, and loaded with tender pieces of lobster. If I'm being incredibly picky, I would have enjoyed just a touch more sherry, but that's purely personal preference. The smaller serving vessel kept the bisque hot from first spoonful to last, which I appreciated. My only complaint was that I wanted a larger serving because it was that good. For my entrée, I ordered the 4-ounce Petite Filet. The steak arrived cooked a perfect medium rare with excellent flavor and texture. It was served with butter-whipped mashed potatoes, haricot verts, a crisp potato gaufrette, red wine demi-glace, and chive butter. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The demi-glace added richness without overwhelming the beef, while the potato gaufrette provided a delicate crunch. My only minor critique was that the plate could have been served a bit hotter, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. One of the highlights of the evening was the service. Taylor, part of the management team, was personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. After my sparkling wine, he suggested a half-glass pour of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since I was driving. Excellent recommendation. The wine was elegant, earthy, and beautifully balanced, pairing perfectly with the filet. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled quickly. Watching the staff greet regulars by name and efficiently manage the growing crowd spoke volumes about how well-run the restaurant is. You could tell many guests were repeat customers, which is always a good sign. After dinner, I attempted to walk off my meal through downtown Asheville, but the summer heat quickly convinced me to head back to my hotel. I left full, happy, and already thinking about that lobster bisque. For a Bay Area foodie who plans entire trips around memorable meals, Chestnut exceeded expectations. Great food, thoughtful service, an inviting atmosphere, and a dining experience that felt special without trying too hard. If you're visiting Asheville, put Chestnut on your list. Life is too short for mediocre meals, and this one is worth making time for.
