There are a lot of sushi ais most are the same this one is different. It has more Chinese items on the menu (lo mein, and fried rice) they also have a salad bar at lunch (not sure if they still do with covid). The sushi is fresher and better presented. Roger is my usual server. He remembers the order and brings extra wasabi and ginger automatically. We love the miso soup, tuna, salmon and mackerel sushi. The kids also like the shumai and dumplings. This is a very good and economical place for downtown St. Louis. read more

My first sushi experience in STL! The bar was set high for me in that I have 4 years spent having some of the most amazing sushi in all the US. San Diego has sushi joints on EVERY corner of every neighborhood and most are pretty darn right solid! I go almost every week I swear it! This place was appealing as its close by me (the Grove) and its only $20 for dinner which is much better than the $29.99 it is at most San Diego places I frequented before my relocation. The same concept applies, 3 rounds, 3 cards to fill out with your orders from small plates/apps to nigiri and then rolls both traditional and specialty. I did not know how to go about getting a handroll made but did not see them listed...perhaps I just needed to ask them? I love handrolls! As my picture shows I went with the basics (I stay traditional with my sushi) and loved what I had. One of maybe 3 places I ever found sweet potato as an item in their rolls and I loved that! They do it well here. The nigiri comes with 1 peice and I like that very much vice the normal 2 per order. Thats just too much if you ask me. I want more variety with my sushi but thats just me. My order came out fairly quick after putting it in. The place was not too busy really for a weeknight so I wonder how weekends look being it is downtown STL after all. Parking is street only so be aware of that. I got a spot a block away so not bad. Service is good, quick and kind. Prices are awesome (compared to what I am used to) and the menu and quality of sushi although not the very best I have had, does warrant a return trip for sure! read more

I live in walking distance of here and I wish it was better. Every time I crave sushi I just go here since it's so convenient and fairly cheap. It's never been my favorite sushi spot but it usually suffices. Anyways, the last time I ordered from here, I got a fried Philly roll and the rolls were so huge that I had to eat them in multiple bites. About half way through, I swallowed a rough piece that scratched my throat and I'm still recovering from it a week later. We've been patrons of this place for many years. It's busy so you know the fish is fresh and has enough seating that you've never had to wait. They have your typical beer selection and sake. Words can't start to describe how much I love this place. Sushi Ai Is the best deal you can get in town. I honestly feel like for the value, quantity and quality of food there's no better deal! My favorite thing to get is the honey roll, the gyozas are delicious, and the rest of the sushi is great! I should've done the buffet style. When the quality of the sushi is only mediocre, you have to do the buffet. That's the only reason I would come here again. Service was great, while the venue appeared very run-down. I might have to try one of their other locations because this review may have only been specific to their downtown location. And as a California girl, I neeeeed to find my sushi fix. It seems as though their rolls are hit or miss.. It was too much of a gamble to choose only a few. While the salmon (sake) sashimi was very good, along with its sauce that I was skeptical about at first, their spicy combo roll was the best of the three rolls we chose, I almost had to spit out the St Louis style roll. It had cream cheese and honey in it, but imagine that served room temperature, if not warmer than that. Speaking of room temperature, they served what could've been a very refreshing and tasty Strawberry long island iced tea at room tempertature as well. The ingredients were good, but they should've been refrigerated. Not pleasant. Let me preface this review by saying that I would never come to Sushi Ai for anything but the sushi buffet, and I'd be very unwilling to come here if it wasn't during weekday lunch hours. With that said, Sushi Ai is a great bang for your buck. You can't beat the $12.99 AYCE sushi lunch special, especially since there's a 10% student discount. There's also a salad bar and self serve buffet area with Chinese fast food, but filling your stomach with those would just be a poor use of real estate. Usually I stick to the nigiri (salmon, eel, white tuna, red snapper) because the rolls are usually way too stuffed with cucumber. The Alaska and Maryland rolls sound great on paper, but there's hardly any fish. On the other hand, the crab and shrimp roll and spicy tuna roll have been solid choices. I see a lot of negative reviews about the quality of their sushi but how much quality do you expect for all you can eat sushi for the price you're paying? Quality wasn't amazing but it wasn't disgusting either. It didn't leave a weird taste, my stomach wasn't upset that night, and I didn't find anything wrong with everything I ordered.
