We enjoyed the sushi but service not so much. While the server seemed nice enough, we just had to find him each time we needed something. Usually the seating at the sushi bar is great, however, not recommended at Sushi Bay 17. Here, you don't order from the sushi chefs (and have zero interaction with them) and instead feel in the way as the servers are collecting their orders over your head. Also an incredibly convenient five-minute walk from our apartment helps. Go for the larger beer, because why not, it's only maybe 50 cents more. Went last night just in time for happy hour. The house wines are $4.50!!! They have a very large happy hour menu as well, and everything was delicious and fast! We got the pork goyza, a side green saad with traditional Japanese dressing and a seaweed salad, which was so refreshing. We got 6 pieces of sashimi and 3 roles to share. Happy hour all weekend, fresh fish with unique combinations. This place is a find! When we went the first time we sat close to the private karaoke room. Look fun, but too loud for my parents. On our second trip they tried to sit us on the opposite side but the lights were not working and it was too dark. Overall this is a solid spot that we are going to make our regular weekend sushi spot. Wish they delivered to us, but are a bit too far. read more

We found this gem by chance. I was craving Thai but when we walked into the restaurant we had chosen it felt greasy so we walked out. We had seen Sushi Bay on our drive so we decided to go there instead. Though the food was good (not spectacular), the customer service was stellar. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed. Our waiter was attentive without hovering and he had a several tables. Even though I said the food was just good - I think that's a huge compliment considering I've had fresh sushi in a lot of places that are not landlocked like Denver. They have great Happy Hour prices during the week and I hear they have an "All you can eat" brunch during the weekend. We're planning on going soon read more

I don't expect too much from a low-rate sushi place like this, but the quality has gone from mediocre to awful. There is not one roll on the menu that isn't a "spicy tuna/salmon/yellow tail/mystery meat crunch" (meaning ground up, shit quality fish, mashed up with tempura flakes & siracha) or tempura fried______. When something has to be deep fried or ground up with fried shit to be appealing, its definitely because they've got something to hide. The sashimi is disgusting. It's fishy & still has a lot of the skin still attached. I didn't even want to eat it for fear of getting sick. The color was all off. The cut may be generous but who wants a thick slice of the lowest possible grade fish?? The server didn't seem too concerned & suggested maybe there was some ingredient the chefs used that we didn't like..... Needless to say, we will never go back to this place again. read more

My boyfriend and I were incredibly lucky to find this gem! We just moved back to Denver from Texas, where we had finally found our sushi spot. Devasted to leave, we found Sushi Bay on our first attempt and have never looked back. The fish is fresh and always is presented beautifully. The cuts are consistent and worth every bite. Of course I can't forget to mention their awesome Happy Hour menu as well as the HUGE menu of options for the Sunday all you can eat special. I have recently tried the Brussel Sprouts appetizer and it is pretty darn delicious. I have yet to try the Spicy Tuna appetizer, but it is next on my list! Great food, great service! read more

Good atmosphere and the sushi is good. Didn't see any some of the sushi and sashimi photos on Yelp on their menu which was disappointing. E.g. live fish sashimi. Waitress also got my order wrong. When the food arrived she said that's what you ordered. My sister said I ordered the right it's but didn't catch her mistake after she repeated it back incorrectly. Her insistance it was my mistake saddened me. Had she apologized I would have been fine with the mistaken entree. Sushi is above average compared to other similar establishments. With some trepidation I booked a reservation for my birthday in late December for a party of eight. Since my first choice, Sushi Den, was booked, I chose Sushi Bay 17 since it had a great reviews. Was I glad we did! The atmosphere is warm and inviting and we got a table for the eight of us in a not very busy Friday night crowd. We started with a couple of different cold Sakes and a round of draft Kirin Ichiban and Asahi tall beers. Draft Kirin?!? I'm in Heaven. We then got an assortment of appetizers including: Seaweed salad (house salad), Gyoza, Dynamite, Edamame, Jalepeno Hamachi. All of which was fantastic and we shared. We then ordered virtually every Nigiri sushi on the menu. Of particular interest to me were the variations of tuna. Including Maguro, Toro, Shiro Maguro (Albacore) and then my favorite, Binnaga or very white tuna. The albacore and Binnaga tuna almost melts in your mouth. It was so good. The Hamachi, Sake, Ebi, Unagi, Hirame, and Aji were all fresh and flavorful. The sushi was as good as anything I can recall eating on either coast and anywhere else in Denver. We ordered several rolls for the less adventurous diners in our group consisting of Shrimp Tempura, California, Rainbow, Caterpillar, Spicy Tuna and the eponymous Sushi Bay 17 roll.. They were all fantastic as well. We were all too stuffed to get desert however they did bring this elaborate flowered, candle cake thing that "blossoms" when the wicks burn. It was quite a show and the staff liked it too. It was a nice surprise too! The service was excellent and the bill for eight stuffed diners? Roughly $400 ($340 + $60 tip) was a great bargain! Portions were generous, fish delicious, but service was only so-so. Our server abandoned us to chat up a friend at the bar. It is important to note he was facing us the entire time, I tried to smile and make eye contact multiple times to no avail. He only had a couple tables at this time as the restaurant was practically empty and there was another server as well. He was mechanical in his sale, and not very personable. Not the worst service I've ever had, but far from the best. What was exciting was when the sushi platter came. The sushi/sashimi was gorgeously displayed and had pretty little lights amongst the shredded radish. They also had a fuchsia orchid nicely placed on the plate. I know it's a silly detail, but I just love when a place takes pride in presentation and makes it fun. The wasabi was deliciously spicy! Often I've been running into plain no flavor wasabi, but not here. We'll be back for sure, but not on a regular basis. read more

This is one of my new favorites! It's a great addition to the neighborhood. The sushi is delicious and the service could not be better. The waitstaff and sushi chefs are so friendly and everything about Sushi Bay is great. They just started delivery and the order took less than 30 minutes to arrive. What a great happy hour. This is going to be my new sushi happy hour spot, forever. The menu is perfect, and priced perfectly as well. There are many pieces of sushi to choose from and a variety of rolls. The appetizer selection is also fantastic. Drinks are standard, wine, beer, sake. The appetizers were fantastic. My friend and I ordered the spicy, crispy tuna and it was by far our favorite of the meal. This dish was beautiful, I felt bad tearing into it! It is a tempura rice ball topped with spicy tuna and the entire rice ball is lined with avacado, then served over spicy mayo. It was amazing. I wish I would have snapped a pic but we were way too excited to dive in! We also ordered a special appetizer of the day, it was 3 pieces of different white fish served with a spicy miso soy dipping sauce. We were also quite impressed by this dish, especially because it was only $12! Then we moved onto the sushi and the rolls. We tried the spicy scallop and octopus. The octopus was also a hit. It was such a large piece and the freshness of the meat was undeniable. I swear, it just came out of the ocean. We had a few rolls, one was deep friend and amazing, and we went with on OG spicy yellow tail. It was all so wonderful. We then discussed trying something different because we were so impressed with the freshness of the fish. I was leaning toward squid but our server recommended niri. I've never had sea urchin before, he promised it would be an experience. The chef then came to our table and said it had just been flown in from Santa Barbara so we might want to give it a shot. He explained this is not something on the everyday menu. So we figured why not, well...I can't say if I liked it or not. The texture got me, I was expecting something much different. After, I found out, niri is the roe. I had no idea! I'm really glad I tried it and am willing to give it another shot. For being brave, adventurous eaters the chef sent us a yummy dessert on the house. I really don't know how you can beat the experience we had at Sushi Bay 17. The food was creative, but simple when necessary. The service was fantastic. The seafood was some of the best I've had as far as freshness goes. All of this for such a right price too. This place just opened and is already a favorite - we sat at the sushi bar on a Sunday afternoon (all you can eat for $27.95) and were greeted by a friendly sushi chef who made sure we made the most of our meal. I am pretty certain that I do not see what others see and I have seen tons of sushi places as well as owned businesses in food and hospitality. Let's dig in: Prices are reasonable for what you get but the owner and management are not friendly. The sushi bar process is pretty straight forward: the reason customers sit at the bar is to order with the sushi chef and make their preferences known. Well not here, everything has to go through a random person (not the waiter) who comes and grabs the order sheet and enters it in the back. It's their process I guess, out of the ordinary but it's their place. Now the fish was frozen (as it is in many places in Colorado) just some of it in this place was not well defrosted. The nigiri was brought on a plate and the server did an OK job trying to decipher the fish, now is the odd part: spouse has an allergy to wasabi and there was a small piece of it on the plate, when we pointed this out to the server, he says "it's not" and puts his finger in the plate wiping it off. So better training for staff is a must. The owner and manager knew about this as they stood right there and also took off the piece of nigiri that we did not touch due to the above but why come apologize and make it right? No ...... On the way out, they did say thank you but with no eye contact. So I would say, this place either has tons to change to improve or keep on the track of serving very mediocre food to the confused as I can not see how anyone can give this place more than 2 stars. read more

Their sushi happy hour really is amazing. The second time I went on Sunday the fish wasn't quite as fresh as the first time, but their new fish arrives every Monday so that makes sense. They have great oysters and enough gimmicky American style Japanese food to make the unadventurous happy while having incredibly authentic Japanese food, some of which is not on the menu. I personally love the happy hour at hapa, the all you can eat at Sushi Katsu, or the absolute quality at Izakaya Den. Since moving to Denver, I was a bit nervous about finding decent sushi in a landlocked state. Sushi Bay 17 has proved me wrong. I have now been twice since moving here and enjoyed both meals. The first was dinner and the second was 'all you can eat' on a Sunday. Both meals were enjoyable, and the fish was fresh. Only downside is there is a lot of fried options on the menu, and these are not always my favorites. Just goes to show, I am not in San Francisco anymore. read more
