A great neighborhood sushi spot with a homey and warm feel, run by the loveliest, sweet couple. We live down the road and this is our go-to for simple and good sushi and Japanese food. Huge sushi rolls stuffed with fresh fish, especially the Jonathan Hamachi, Spider, and 49ers rolls. We often get the bento dinner combos with the crispiest tempura, and we always leave stuffed. To start I shouldn't have to wait 15 minutes after receiving the menu to ask for a glass of water. I was really looking forward to the three rolls we selected because I love macadamia nuts and mango. One roll that stated on the menu had Macadamia nuts were not inside, the other roll that stated mango was on top didn't even exist. The third roll that we received stated spicy tuna, they replaced the spicy tuna with imitation crab and spiced it up. I questioned the lady that this was not tuna and she said it was something else which I couldn't even understand and I quote " it makes it more delicious" ----huh, what? After I questioned her, she then became really friendly and nice. She also gave us two extra samples of sushi to try. Um no thanks. Plus, if the roll description on the menu doesn't state lemon then don't put it on the roll. What are you trying to cover up? So, I paid almost $15 a roll for NO macadamia nuts, NO mango, and NO tuna. Please see my photo attached, this is not spicy tuna. I have had plenty of spicy tuna in my life and this was not tuna! This is a solid four star Japanese restaurant. Truly a hole in the wall spot at the corner of a small strip mall on Pollard Road near La Rinconada Country Club, this eatery is owned and run by a cute Japanese couple, Tony and Sue. The restaurant only has six tables, which I expect may fill up quickly during the dinner hours, but my first visit to the establishment today was for lunch, around 1:00 PM or so. Other than myself, there was only one other dining party. I ordered the lunch bento box: three items with chicken teriyaki, shrimp tempura, and California roll (6 pieces). Additionally, I ordered a side of the Hibachi Chicken Rice, an order of Salmon nigiri, an order of Sea Bass nigiri, and an order of the Crab nigiri. Overall, the quality of the food, the flavor, and the presentation were all decent. Flavor-wise, nothing really stood out, which is why I couldn't give this place five stars. The presentation of the food was very standard for a Japanese restaurant, although I agree with some other reviewers that the overall look of the rolls leave something to be desired. What makes this place shine is the quality of their fish. Each different nigiri I ordered stood out to me. The flavor was perfect for each fish and it all tasted very fresh. Since "sushi" is in the name of the restaurant itself, it makes sense that the sushi here is spectacular. It is clear that Tony, the sushi chef (and owner), takes a lot of pride and care in the preparation and presentation of the nigiri. This was the first time I had ever had the pleasure of trying sea bass (susuki) nigiri and the firm texture of the fish surprised me. Honestly, I cannot name a single other Japanese restaurant in the Bay Area that serves sea bass nigiri. When the owners noticed that this was my first time at the restaurant, Tony the sushi chef sent over a complementary sample of his O Toro nigiri. Normally, this would be insanely expensive (O Toro is typically the single, most expensive sashimi / nigiri item on a menu). The O Toro was really fresh and easily the best tasting o toro I've had. I like a lot of different fish, but I've never really been a big fan of o toro. The Hibachi Chicken Rice, which I ordered purely out of morbid curiosity, since I've never had hibachi chicken rice anywhere outside of Benihana's, turned out to be better than expected. Tony's take on hibachi chicken rice is very interesting. His use of green bell peppers adds a unique flavor and texture profile that I found to be very satisfying. Although I appear to be swooning over this establishment, I do have two knocks against this place. First, I would not recommend ordering their tempura items; especially the shrimp tempura. The batter is very thick and heavy and I felt like I was eating a corn dog rather than tempura. Also, for the quantity and quality of the food, this place is pretty pricey. But, that said, I've had plenty of Japanese food that cost more and tasted significantly worse. I would eat here again, but next time, I'll stick to the sushi, nigiri, and sashimi. read more

I really wanted to like this restaurant but I just did not have a very good experience here, service-wise and food-wise. I work close by so I came with a few of my coworkers for lunch. We originally wanted to dine-in. My coworker asked if we could sit inside for lunch because we were unsure, there was nobody else at the restaurant at the time. The owners, husband and wife it seems, were discussing and first said no, then maybe felt bad for us? and said we could just sit. At this point we decided to just do takeout and go to a nearby park. We ordered our food and waited outside. While we were waiting there was another lady that ordered takeout and was also outside and we could overhear her on the phone with someone saying she probably got overcharged here. I did notice that the menu items were very pricey, but I just thought maybe they had to raise their price a little with everything that's been going on with the pandemic. I was happy to support this small business that seems to be run by just the husband and wife. There was nobody eating in, and there was only the one other lady who ordered takeout. It took 30-40 minutes for our lunch, which made me a little anxious to get back to work. I ordered the chicken karaage and rainbow roll. The chicken karaage basically were cut up strips of chicken katsu..I was confused. It wasn't terrible tasting but just not what I was expecting. The rainbow roll.. was ok. Little fish, LOTS of rice in the roll which was a bit disappointing. I also found a white string of fabric in my roll. Maybe it was just an off day for the owners. read more

I ate here on Friday night and it was honestly one of the strangest restaurant experiences I have had in a while and not at all what I have ever experienced at a small japanese restaurant. I walked in and there was a couple sitting at a table, other then that there was nobody in the restaurant. I manage to walk in walk all the way to the 3 seat bar and sit down and was never greated . No biggie, but strange. I decide to reach over to the right to grab a menu as still not greated and no menu provided. I open the menu and multiple small bugs are inside. I don't believe they were roaches. They were very small fast moving bugs that scurried as I opened the menu. I should have just walked out, but I would have missed a circus. I wanted to leave but figured I was there and it would be rude to leave so I figure I will ask for a beer. Only large beer they have is Sapporo, but WTH. Beer is served and male from only table in restaurant walks to front to ask for check. Seemed a little perturbed like he had been waiting a while. Mind you it's only us in this restaurant. The lady asks how everything was and he says fine (will come back to this later) I order sashimi appetizer and Philly roll soon after this. Now the phone orders start. She answers them on speaker. The lady starts to place her order. Standard varying rolls order. She finishes and the owners wife tells her 45 min. The lady on the phone is surprised by the time frame. The owners wife says "we are very busy." I'm the only person in the restaurant and it appears they are just filling togo orders. They owners wife cuts the call short basically canceling the order because the women was concerned about time length. Another person calls and is again told 45 min for order but they were fine with it so order I placed. Fast forward 10 minutes, the lady who was placing the order on the phone shows up in person apologizing saying she wants to pay in advance for the order and was concerned there was some confusion. She is polite and didn't want to offend. I could tell she showed up because she didn't want any confusion. The owners wife not even batting an eye says it will be atleast 50 minutes now if she wants to replace the order now. I'm stunned at this point. This is some next level Seinfeld Soup Natzi stuff. I want to say something but I'm committed, and can't. I'm in the middle of a train wreck and want to see what will happen next. The women from the phone is stunned. The owners wife looks at her and says maybe next time. I'm just thinking WTH am I witnessing. After the lady leaves it appears the wife of the owner is taking a little S about the lady based on her tone and demeanor. Again I'm just sitting there thinking wow how do they have customers. I'm thinking their fish must be epic for people to deal with this given the number of quality sushi restaurants within 20 minutes of here. After 25 minutes, again I'm the only person in the restaurant eating there. I get my food. It was awkward waiting. I started to watch videos on my phone as it was so weird. The sushi was of very very average quality. Fresh enough that I didn't have concerns, but average at best. I rate the fish a 3. Eat my food and want to pay, but this trainwrecks not over yet. Place my Wells Fargo debit card down and owners wife comes over to take it. She attempts to run it and asks me if I have another card. I'm confused and a little embarrassed as a person is there to pickup a togo order. I ask why. She mumbles something about the number. I ask was it declined she seems to imply it was. I pull my CC and then log into my account fearing I had been hacked or something horrible happened. Nope could pay for my meal 100s of times over. Call her over and ask politely what is going on. I have my Bank app open just for emphasis and she blames the machine. I'm just so over this place at this point and wondering how it has good reviews. They seem to have a solid local core of people who place togo orders that they cater to. It's the only way I can see how they survive. The couple that left now 30 minutes after I paid. Yeah there food was still on their table. Looked like 1/2 the food was still on their plates. So many things I saw in such a short time period just had me confused. I try to not leave negative reviews, but you folks need to get your stuff together and get over yourself. The Chef seems alright the wife....... ooooooooo lawd I want to write something rude. Settle down you are supposed to focus on customer service, nut be the example of what not to do. I would list some nearby restaurants that are much much better, but that wouldn't be right If you eat here please try some other places. Fish 3 The train wreck I am taking 2 points off for a solid 1. We went to this sushi place based on its great yelp reviews and we weren't disappointed. I was a little skeptical because of the location. It's just a tiny restaurant adjacent to a Safeway and a CVS so it looks very unassuming. Inside there are just a few tables and booths, but the sushi was delicious! We ordered a variety: tofu, miso soup, sushi nigiri, children's meal and special rolls and everything we had was excellent. The fish was very fresh and the combination of the flavors in the special rolls and the tofu dish were very good. In addition, the service was good and they even gave us an extra roll to try and some watermelon to slices to finish off our meal. Their menu was also really varied and included things like udon and chicken teriyaki so it's a great place to go for Japanese food with people who don't necessarily like sushi. The food itself is Asian fusion, so they have offerings that range from Sashimi (that actually has flavor*) for the sushi purists, all the way to these mayo-y rolls with fish in a tangy sauce, for the rest of us non-purists. *I've noticed a lot of sushi places in this price range tend to have bland fish for some reason. That's never a problem with Sushi E. As to the experience: Sue and Tony know every customer by name. And obviously I know theirs. They're quite memorable. They make an effort to connect with every person that comes in. Preparing food is an act of caring for them. read more

This is our new favorite, among the many sushi options in the Campbell/Los Gatos/Saratoga areas. We ate here for dinner tonight, and while the food took a few minutes longer than some other places, we soon understood why. Large handcrafted rolls with all the trappings, made fresh with great quality fish, and the layers of flavors that good sushi brings. Little hints of sweet in rolls that generally are more umami, springs of spice in rolls that have more of a creamy overtone, you get the idea. It's not just fish, it's not just rice, it's not just sauce...it's the sum of the parts. This is a good neighborhood find if you're in the South Bay. Hidden in a small shopping complex with Safeway and a taqueria, Sushi E! has a nice intimate feel, good sushi and reasonable prices. I went on a Thursday night and noticed a regular crowd of in-streaming customers who appeared to know the owners well and ordered mostly take-out. I started with a deluxe nigiri set of 12 pieces ($24). A nice selection of chef selections were chosen, including halibut, scallop, uni, and toro. The halibut in particular was a standout with great seasonings and a wonderful flavor. Perhaps this is why two pieces were included. If so, thanks to the chef! To-go, I decided to order a rainbow roll ($12). I was a bit surprised by the small size (compared to nearby Michi Sushi) but the flavor was excellent. Nonetheless, I'd have to say the rolls were on the pricey side compared to the nigiri. Overall, I consider this tiny, but elegant, hole-in-the-wall a great find. The sushi was solid (I think Sushi Tomi in MV is better) and overall reasonably priced. I'm often down in this area and I look forward to trying more of the menu items (including the lunch and dinner specials) and enjoying the intimate atmosphere. I spent $46 for two people, and I'm still pretty hungry. We asked the waitress to get us one of her favorite sushi rolls, but she didn't speak English well enough, so we didn't get sushi out of that. The restaurant was chilly inside. The table was ok and the ambiance was mediocre. My friend ordered tea, but it never arrived. I was out of water most of the meal. I typically don't write reviews, but I felt this place deserves a special shout out. SushiE is a small family owned business, but has rolls that are in the caliber of high end restaurants. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. I was surprised at how creative the rolls were. You'll find a great variety to choose from as well as all your favorites. For some reason, google maps thought Sushi E was on the other side of the street... but thanks to yelp i knew to find it by safeway :). For an appetizer, we ordered the tempura, which was your ordinary tempura with shrimp, potato, onion, yams?? I ordered the rose garden roll (I cant remember the whole name of it), but it was soooo yummy. Also, I cant remember what my friend ordered :( but it was on the fusion section. We were both served hot tea and cold water upon sitting down. The service was so amazing! It was a Tuesday night so I called to ask what time the restaurant closed. The woman on the phone insisted on making a reservation so I assumed it was going to be a busy night. When we got there, we noticed the restaurant was small but there were plenty of open places to sit. After dinner, we were served a half orange to eat that was perfectly cut and had a toothpick in it for eating (see picture). Perfect ending to perfect sushi! read more

Even though I have lived 1 minute away from this place for as long as they've been in business, I never tried Sushi-E til today! Definitely hit the spot - and they were so nice to serve us when we walked in 30 minutes before the evening shift was officially open. We tried the miso soup - A, spicy tuna roll - A and the paradise roll - A. No A+'s but it was all yummy. I do think for the amount I paid (about $30 for 2 people) I'm used to getting more food, but it's ok. They weren't playing any music but I'm sure they do when they are actually open? I also liked the water - it was iced and had a lemon slice. I'm pretty picky about my water :) Definitely a great place to stop by if I'm feeling lazy but probably better for the pocket to go somewhere a bit further. read more

Ordered take out last night. Was charged $20 for a sashimi "platter" which consisted of 9 very small pieces of fish. The fish itself was not fresh and had a weird texture. It did not come with any rice, soup, or salad even though their other meals do. We also ordered a California roll which was ok and a teriyaki dinner which was a good size and was tasty. I won't be ordering from here again. If you do I'd steer clear of the sashimi. read more

Solid sushi place and it does hit the spot. Rice to fish ratio is pretty fair and solid compliment to each other. Standard sushi rolls are staples on the menu like the lion king roll; they have the typical rolls you would expect from any sushi restaurant. Each of the rolls have really good presentation and plated well. The fish taste fresh and they are paired well with other fresh ingredients. Overall very tasty food! It's small and quaint spot, but the husband and wife team that run the place are really amazing. They have a good chemistry and work well together to deliver good service. Very personable folks that have a genuine interest in their customers. It was our first time there as a group after work and they really took good care of us even giving us a complimentary first time deep fried sushi roll! I had a weekday here lunch with with a couple other people. We were the only patrons there. It took over 30 minutes for our food to come out. We all ordered a bento box with cooked and raw items. The cooked items (beef teriyaki/salmon teriyaki/) were cold by the time we got it. The sashimi i got was so thin it was like they cut up one normal slice you'd get at other restaurants into 4 pieces. I couldn't even taste the tuna. I'm surprised there are so many high reviews. Maybe all the non-Asian people living around this neighborhood doesn't know what a good Japanese restaurant should be and are the ones giving them these undeserving great reviews.
