Our family recently visited Sushi Kyo and we were amazed by the quality and taste of this astounding food. The sushi, sashimi, rolls, and the kitchen food were unique and delicious. All their foods were high in fish quality as they were all savory and almost just melted in our mouths. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also very nice, and all the furniture and decorations in the restaurant were spotless. We can especially see that a chef named Jason was making almost all our foods, so we were amazed by his talent! Our server, Stacey, was also super kind and nice served our foods immediately. I'm so happy this place opened in Monrovia! I love the fresh fish and ingredients. Service is good, everyone is friendly and checks on you. Delicious sushi, but the service was disappointing when we went there. We sat down for 15 minutes with no waiter or waitress coming to take our order. We had to wave someone down just to place it. The waitress then walked away without providing water, so we had to get the attention of another waitress to ask for it. When our food arrived, there was no wasabi, ginger, or soy sauce, and we had to ask for those as well. If the service were better and more attentive, we would definitely come back more often. Ordered items included fatty tuna, bluefin tuna, Spanish mackerel, an LA roll, and garlic butter scallop. All of the fish was fresh and very good, with the fatty tuna and bluefin tuna standing out as spectacular. Both were exceptionally clean, rich, and well cut, and easily the highlights of the meal. The Spanish mackerel was handled properly and tasted bright, not fishy. The garlic butter scallop was nicely seared and flavorful, and one of the stronger cooked items. However, the rice was a clear weak point. It was hard and poorly textured, which significantly detracted from the nigiri and the roll, especially for how expensive the sushi was. Sushi depends heavily on rice quality, and here it did not match the caliber of the fish. With properly seasoned, softer rice, this would be a solid spot. Excellent fish selection and freshness, but the rice needs serious improvement. read more

The service was excellent, and the staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful throughout our visit. Unfortunately, the food quality did not match the level of service. Here are some of the dishes we ordered: * Sashimi Salad - The tuna had a noticeable odor and did not seem fresh. * Fried Squid Legs - Very hard and chewy. * Osaka Sushi - Mediocre and nothing particularly memorable. * Garlic Butter Jumbo Scallop with Uni - I would only recommend this if you're confident the uni is fresh. The uni we were served did not taste fresh at all. * Kid's Combination Meal - The best value among everything we ordered. The portion size was generous and worth the price. * Beef Skewers - Not enjoyable. The garlic sauce or seasoning had a sour taste that seemed off. Most concerning, the people in our group who ate the uni experienced stomach pain and diarrhea afterward. While I genuinely appreciate the attentive service provided by the dining room staff, fresh seafood is essential for a sushi restaurant. Came to Kyo Sushi tonight for my birthday! We had the BSC roll, Black Spider roll and the combination with chicken teriyaki, mixed tempura and spicy tuna rolls. The BSC roll is a California roll with baked scallops It was outstanding, and highly recommend. The spicy tuna roll was very fresh and flavorful. The black spider roll was just okay. The service was excellent. Both of our severs were very nice , informative and attentive. This place is located in the old Chronic Taco location and the conversion is impressive. Cool, chill vibe. I wouldn't say intimate but the lighting is low enough to create a bit of a vibe. Music makes an upbeat hit relaxing environment where it isn't so loud that you can't hear your dinner mates, but not low enough where you can hear others speaking. Food was great. Sushi was fresh, soft and didn't need soy sauce. Drink menu was typical of a mid-scale sushi restaurant with a decent selection of cold sake and of course hot. We recently ordered takeout from Sushi Kyo and tried the Osaka Chirashi, plus a 3 Item Bento Combination with chicken teriyaki, 6-piece sashimi, and a spicy tuna roll. The order also came with a Spicy Albacore Roll free with qualifying orders over $20, which makes it a pretty great deal for the price. The only miss for me was the tuna, which had a slightly odd texture on its own. It worked better mixed into the roll than it did as straight sashimi.​ That aside, I'm still very much looking forward to coming back to dine in and try more of the menu, especially the Kyo Sashimi and Yellowtail with Jalapeño. read more
