As an avid fan of Japanese cuisine, Sushi Mito has somehow managed to fly under my radar until this year, probably because it's in Norcross. That changed thanks, once again, to Yelp. According to one server, Cheng, Mito has been open for over 10 years. "It's never too late" to become a fan, he says. I agree. Sushi Mito is located in a strip mall near the intersection of Spalding Dr. and Holcomb Bridge Rd. The inside of the restaurant is Japanese authentic, the best part being the sushi bar that has an izakaya-style (Japanese bar-restaurant) sake menu setup above. Mito has quite the extensive sake list. Each bottle is proudly shown on display below its menu descriptor at the bar. The extensivity doesn't stop at sake. The food menu is elaborate and overwhelming. Not reading too much about this restaurant going in for the first time, I expected a menu filled mostly with sushi. That wasn't the case. Sushi Mito has a full-fledged izakaya menu with all sorts of Japanese foods including, but not limited to, small vegetable plates, kushiyaki and yakitori (meat, seafood, and veggie skewers), fresh and grilled seafood, chicken and pork dishes like tori tatsuta age (like chicken kara age) and tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), noodles (ramen, soba, udon), teriyaki, tempura, and bento boxes. Oh yeah, and they have sushi, including different varieties of chirashi (sashimi on top of rice). Needless to say, if you don't know what you want, it can be very tough to choose. Everything looks appealing and there are a multitude of options. From an izakaya perspective, I think Shoya Izakaya may be the only worthy Atlanta area comparison in terms of menu depth and breadth. Note izakaya-style dining could be considered Japanese tapas -- a lot of small plates, ideal for sharing. I've tried a varied sampling of the menu up to this point and would recommend just about everything I've tried. There are still plenty of items I would love to try and plan to in the future. These include the tonkatsu, ramen, and nigiri. I'll update my review once I've had those. Here's what I've tried so far: Sake: Itami - ultra dry, light-bodied, note of citrus Izakaya dishes: Wakamesu - wakame seaweed with vinegar dressing Calamari Frito - fried calamari Ika Shogayaki - sauteed squid with ginger Kushiyaki skewers: Gyu fillet - marinated beef Chicken skin Yakitori - marinated chicken Shiitake - mushrooms Butabara miso - pork belly, miso-flavored Whole scallop Sushi: Crispy Spicy Tuna Roll - fried tempura batter, mayo, smelt roe, sliced tuna Alaskan Salmon Roll - California roll topped with salmon Arizona Roll - yellowtail, avocado, cream cheese, topped with smelt roe Fresh wasabi sauce - made from real wasabi (not the green manufactured paste) Desserts: Fried green tea ice cream Mango mousse Presentation is beautiful and superb. I love the dishware. Many of the foods have their own unique plates. If you order sake cold, the sake comes in a groovy, form-follows-function bottle that has a special compartment just for ice. Other local sushi restaurants use bottles like this, such as Taka in Buckhead. Edamame, boiled and lightly salted fresh soybeans, are complimentary and are served in individual bowls. The Itami sake is smooth and has great taste. Different types of seaweed are available. Wakamesu is the darker colored (green) seaweed which is soaked in a vinegar sauce and topped with sesame seeds. Very good. Calamari Frito is pretty much standard fried calamari, but a little different because the squid pieces are bigger and the dish comes with a lot of scallions. I found the batter to be a bit soggy and not so crispy. The Ika Shogayaki is neatly sliced and you can see right down the center of the squid. It comes with ginger mustard sauce. Satisfying texture and flavor. You can still see the original squid skin on the outside. Order one of the kushiyaki sets if you want to sample a lot of the skewers. The meats are marinated well, tender, and flavorful. The chicken skin skewer is an odd one. It's dry and crunchy and is similar to pork rinds. The scallops are hearty and plump. The sushi is generally quite fresh, though I really need to try the nigiri. They have fresh wasabi. Hayakawa serves it too, but in a different form. Mito's fresh wasabi is in sauce form. Heck, it almost resembles a green salsa. It's chunky and runny. I'm not sure if Mito makes the sauce from scratch or if they order it pre-made. Either way, try it if you've never had fresh wasabi before. It's unlike the typical green paste. The desserts are good. It's hard to go wrong with green tea ice cream. The fried batter shell is topped with chocolate sauce and surrounded with whipped cream. The mango mousse is dense. Service is excellent and the food comes out unexpectedly fast. Sushi Mito is the only restaurant I've seen so far to have a "sanitary door opener" inside the restrooms. You use your wrist/forearm to pull the door open. read more

I am excited about my new sushi discovery! We stopped by here on a cold and rainy night and were seated in a cozy booth on the left side of the restaurant. The relaxing and intimate atmosphere was just what I needed to page through the extensive menu of food options complete with photos. We started with two appetizers and chose three sushi dishes to satisfy our cravings. CHICKEN YAKITORI - two skewers with bite sized pieces of grilled chicken. Good and served on a stick - no complaints. FRIED SOFTSHELL CRAB - crispy and easy to eat - love it when shells don't get in the way. The dish also included small pieces of fried shrimp. SPICY TUNA ROLL - included cucumber with smelt roe on top of the roll. I wasn't sure about this pick, but one bite of the seasoned sashimi filling and this became an instant favorite. The filling was cold, the spice jolted my taste buds and the rice was perfectly cooked. DRAGON ROLL - Shrimp tempura and cream cheese with eel, avocado and eel sauce. Forgive me true sushi lovers for ordering sushi with cream cheese, but there were few eel dishes to choose from! Crunchy, creamy and chewy -- contrast at its BEST. PEACH ROLL - fried salmon, asparagus served with peach sauce. Not a winner to me. The roll was bland and the sauce was runny and flavorless. There was no hint of peach other than in the name. The service was top notch. Our waitress was patient and attentive. She even exchanged our cups of green tea (which were not cold at all) with new cups of piping hot tea, unprompted.. I'm not sure why I haven't heard of Sushi Mito, but I'm glad my friend invited me here for dinner. Located in a shopping plaza, parking isn't an issue. Once inside, I noticed tables in the open. Our table, since there were five of us, was inside a private booth. Our server brought us hot tea (complimentary). My friend agreed on a deal to split the tonkatsu ramen ($9.95) and a Chirashi ($22) with me. The meals came with a complimentary bowl of miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The miso soup was chock full of tofu and seaweed (mmm) and the ginger dressing on the salad didn't disappoint! The tonkatsu ramen had a milky broth and seemed slightly lacking in flavor. However, I've had much worse, as I have had ramen that is too salty as well as ramen that is too mild. The server brought us some chili paste per our request, which really gives it a kick. The Chirashi was pretty good, with some fresh slices of fish for $22 on seasoned sushi rice. I was sad there was only one slice of salmon, as it makes it difficult to split. There weren't those premium cuts of toro or uni, and there wasn't any scallop or amoebi, but the sashimi provided was very fresh and high quality Overall, a solid sushi joint. I would love to give some of the sushi rolls a try next time I'm back. This isn't Circle Sushi, but for the prices, it's definitely worth the visit. read more

Ramen review: Tonkotsu ramen is not up to the standards of other ramen joints in town. Weak broth - I expect tonkotsu ramen to remind me of my mortality with rich, decadent, artery-clogging broth. Sushi Mito's version is more like tonkotsu lite. Charshu pork is adequate. Noodles reminded me of my college days, and not in a good way. Boiled egg - and it's good that it comes with one - was hard-boiled instead of soft. Cutting the egg with chopsticks, releasing the yolk into the broth, enriching it, is one of the pleasures of tonkotsu ramen. So, not very good. Service was quite fine - very friendly, prompt, not intrusive. Full marks on service. The space is nice, too. Being a singleton, I was seated at the bar, which is not my preference but I understand. Comfortable seat. No obnoxious music, something I value highly. One of the negatives of my favorite ramen joint is that I get my ears assaulted there. Not so at Sushi Mito. This place is the one thing I miss about working in Norcross! Sushi Mito is one of the best-kept secret restaurants in the metro Atlanta area. Their consistency with delicious food is something I always rave about-- I've frequented this place over 20 times, both for lunch and dinner, and have never had a bad experience. The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable and if you have a large group, they will gladly seat you in a private room. All Sushi chefs and servers are Japanese, which only adds to the authenticity of the dining experience. For lunch, I recommend the variety of awesome Bento boxes that shout quality throughout. One can choose beef, chicken, or salmon with a Teriyaki glaze (very delicious), Sashimi, or Sushi. They come with a fresh ginger salad (the lettuce is always crisp and green) and a warm Miso soup. The sides include rice, Tempura shrimp and veggies, fried Shumai, and a couple of orange slices. This meal costs about $13-15 and is an extremely great bargain for the quality! For dinner, go to town with their Izakaya choices (small Japanese plates). You can't go wrong with any of them, or any of their other menu options. I generally write reviews for only great experiences or really poor experiences. Boy was eating here with my family a great experience. The menu was vast and the fish was fresh. The only thing that would top the food was the service. I believe our waiter's name was Hendrick and he provided us with exceptional service. He was familiar with all the menu items and there was a lot of character to him. He was a lot of fun. I highly recommend eating here. You will not be disappointed. We arrived to find a wait time of about 30 minutes which went by quickly. They texted us that the table was ready and we were seated. We had talked about getting sukiyaki because we hadn't had it in a really long time. Mom who was Chinese would prep it for special occasions so we decided we would get that with some sushi. My friend is gluten, dairy and soy free, so she sometimes is limited in choices but our waitress said she would check. Luckily, the sukiyaki met her needs. I thought the menu showed sukiyaki or Shabu Shabu for 2 instead of individual portions. So we tried to order that size. Apparently that selection is no longer available. The online choices need to be updated. Sukiyaki is single order and Shabu Shabu needs to be ordered by reservation in advance. Sushi came first and the size of pieces were nice and fresh. Then the single order of sukiyaki came. Single bowl of rice, Kani salad and sweet potato side dish along with large bowl of sukiyaki. There was glass noodles, large mushroom stalk, Tofu, thin sliced beef, bokchoy, green onion and a nice broth. It was a good thing we didn't order two orders. With the sushi and the sukiyaki, that was plenty for the two us. Even had some leftover to bring home! The ambience was nice. Although busy, the noise level was such that we were able to have conversation. Our waitress was very attentive, making sure we had what we needed. My friend mentioned this was my birthday dinner and the waitress brought out two pieces of tiramisu. Although my friend couldn't eat it, it was a sweet gesture and lucky me, I had 2 pieces. The reason for 4 star is the website not being kept up to reflect they don't have the Sukiyaki for 2 at $48.95 and only have single portion. Our waitress explained that people don't realize that the single portion is large enough for 2 to share and to fill full. I have been here a couple of times now. The sashimi (I've tried the sweet shrimp, the yellowtail and the fatty tuna) is PHENOMENAL. Especially that yellowtail. It's $12 for 3 pieces but the pieces are pretty generously-sized -- even then, that is on the pricey side. I feel the rolls are pretty fairly priced, but they do not stand out as much as the sashimi. My favorite thus far has been the softshell crab roll (also known as the Spider Roll). Sushi Mito's version of the Spider Roll is one of the best versions I've tried. I always seem to order some iteration of a Spider Roll when I visit a sushi place. I've tried some of their specialty rolls (of which I cannot remember their names), the spicy tuna crunch roll (I think that is the name) and the Rainbow roll. All good... but not amazing. Desserts are exorbitantly expensive. They charge nearly $8 for a cup of gelato and $4.25 for a sliver of cheesecake. read more

This is my favorite sushi joint in the neighborhood. Quality is consistent, the rice is always perfectly seasoned and the staff treats you very well. I've had there a few times and I keep going back. For the first time tonight I had omakase with Chef Jack and it was phenomenal - Great ingredients with wonder flavor profiles. Wow is all I can say. Moved here from Chicago last year and was super worried I wouldn't mind the amazing sushi I was used to finding there. This place is incredible and has become an absolute favorite. It's a ways away from where I live but even in horrible Atlanta traffic it's worth the drive! Sushi is incredibly fresh and you can find the tough to find favorites like monkfish liver and shima ski. Plus they have an amazing full menu of other dishes such as kushi (skewers) and tons of other great appetizers and dishes. Plus the service is incredibly friendly and personal. FIRST IMPRESSION: Went to this restaurant for the first time today. Went for lunch and at first impression the restaurant has this cool lounge vibe and immediately enjoyed the ambiance. Got seated immediately, friendly hostess, and quick service (at first). SERVICE: With it being lunch time on a weekday, we received complimentary miso soup and ginger salad. Drinks and starters were given to us quickly and then we placed our order. I was the only one eating and only ordered two (basic) rolls. Rolls took a long time to come out. Our server bring out my lunch order - which I didn't think anything about because usually if that happens the server comes out a couple minutes later asking how things and if you need anything else. That didn't happen. And I was missing my requested side of spicy mayo that I made when placing my order. 15min go by and still no sign of my server. Had to flag down a server nearby so they could grab our actual server. When my server came to our table she was very apologetic in that she forgot to stop by and that she forgot the side of spicy mayo. Was prompt in service following her error. FOOD: Really impressed with the miso soup and ginger salad. Not impressed with the sushi. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and Mexican roll (their version of a shrimp tempura roll). Tuna did not taste fresh (tasted much better with spicy mayo), shrimp tempura was bland and was not rolled well. We will try again. Sushi Mito located on Spalding Drive in Norcross is another hidden talent that I never noticed before even though I've driven by the strip mall that it is located in many times. Like most Japanese restaurants, it is small in size but great in the fish that it turns out. It maintains a limited menu for lunch on Sundays but the menu is voluminous the rest of the week. After our experience today, we will definitely return during the week for dinner. Our friends ordered a la carte and had a volcano roll, a yum yum roll and a Sunday Japanese bagel (sushi rice with cream cheese and scallion topped with a nice piece of the equivalent of Nova salmon. I had a traditional Nigiri sushi and spicy tuna roll set. The sushi included tuna, white fish, salmon, shrimp and eel. My wife had a salmon and tuna Zuke Don set that came with an abundant layer of sliced fish over sushi rice, some cut-up veggies, and soy triangles that tasted like cheese. This was accompanied by a sweet seaweed, carrot and soy bit salad. All dishes came with an endless tea pot to start, an absolutely delicious and hearty miso soup and a Japanese custard pudding (Chawanmushi) made from eggs and filled with a leaf vegetable, slice of mushroom, slice of crab, and shrimp. Unlike many other custards, it is usually eaten as a dish within the meal as chawanmushi contains savory rather than sweet ingredients. In addition, you were asked up front if you wanted more ginger or wasabi. This restaurant is just over the Gwinnett County line off of Holcomb bridge Rd. and easily reachable from anywhere in the metro area. Wow. The food here is delicious. Walked in on a Friday night and the place was packed. There were a lot of people waiting for a table. It made me think, "How good could this place possibly be?" I get it now. Despite the 45-50 minute estimated wait time the two of us were seated in 30 min. The interior of the restaurant is warm and dimly lit, good for families or a romantic atmosphere. The booths give a nice sense of privacy. The menu is very extensive. There is so much to choose from. There are both pricey and affordable options. Kushiyaki (grilled meat & vegetable skewers), dinner bento boxes, ramen, udon, yakisoba, donburi, sukiyaki, sushi, sashimi, and so much more. You want it? They got it. I regret not taking pictures of their entire menu. The menu on their website and the ones posted on Yelp do not capture their variety. There were a lot of other dishes, grilled items, and small plates they had as well. We ordered the following items: - Spicy Geso ($5.50?) (able to order non-spicy) - Takoyaki ($4.80) - Grilled Beef Loin ($5.50?) - Beef Teriyaki Dinner Bento Box ($27.50) Spicy Geso - Spicy fried squid legs. We were able to order this non-spicy. It was delicious with great crunchy texture. Texture-wise I feel like this is better than getting some calamari rings. Try it! Takoyaki - Good. Comes with 4 pieces. Grilled Beef Loin - Two skewers. Delicious and tender. Beef Teriyaki Dinner Bento Box - This was one of the pricier dinner items (other than sashimi/nigiri of course) but it was well worth it. Served with beef teriyaki, miso soup, ginger salad, steamed rice, vegetable + ebi (shrimp) tempura, 4 pc California roll, 6 pieces of sashimi, 3 pieces of nigiri, and orange slices. I think that's a pretty good deal. The ginger salad was delicious, I like their dressing compared to other places. Miso soup was more flavorful compared to other restaurants as well. Tempura included 3 pieces of ebi tempura, 1 eggplant, 1 zucchini, 1 sweet potato, and 1 pumpkin/squash tempura. The tempura was juicy and fried to perfection. California roll was pretty standard. Sashimi included 2 pieces of yellowtail, 2 pieces of salmon, and 2 pieces of tuna. I am still a sashimi amateur but I think these were good quality sashimi. The tuna was soft and particularly good. Nigiri included 1 salmon, 1 tuna, 1 shrimp nigiri. All amazing. The beef teriyaki was good too but oddly enough I do not think it was the star of the show. The side items were just too good. Overall I recommend all of the appetizers I ordered. Simple but delicious. Also I'm so happy they have dinner bento boxes here. I've noticed sushi restaurants getting rid of dinner bento boxes and reserving them for lunch only, or getting rid of bento boxes altogether. It is a sad epidemic. Please, please, please Sushi Mito I beg of you, don't ever do that. Keep doing your thing because you're doing great. Presentation of the food was elegant and beautiful. Service was great. Such a wonderful experience. I'll be back to try more of their menu. read more
