Once again Sushitown, absolutely no complaints. Came in about a half hour before close, and they were still seating people. If you are considering going to a sushi restaurant in newport/costa mesa area, Sushitown should certainly be on your list. We left around 730p and there was a tons of people waiting. Parking: Hard to find a parking spot in the little town center. Most of the parking spots were also 1 hour parking only. Physical Appearance: Looks like a nice little hole in the wall sushi restaurant. Sushi Bar had every seat taken and the restaurant had a few TV's which were nice. We were seated at a table towards the back of the restaurant in the corner. We did notice our table was sticky and needed a good wipe down. Food: Pricing for the sushi was excellent and a good value. Here's what we ordered and rating: BSAR Roll - 7 out of 10 Salmon was cooked very good and tasted delicious Caterpillar Roll - 5/10 The overload of avocado was excellent, there was not enough unagi in the roll and way more imitation crab so the ratio was off. Wat too much teriyaki sauce which over powered the taste of the roll Spider Roll - 6/10 Soft shell crab was deep fried well and the roll itself was pretty good size. Presentation was decent Salmon skin hand Roll - 6.5/10 great value for your money. They overload the hand Roll with salmon skin. They could have added a carrot or cucumber for a crunch to offset the texture in each bite. The nori was a little soggy. Uni sushi - 6/10 uni tasted decent. It wasn't the freshest but also didn't taste bad like the ocean. It was good. Presentation was standard. Amaebi - 3/10 the physical appearance looked like it wasn't the freshest. Looked like it was pre-cut and refrigerated. It tasted pasty and slightly rubbery, which is unusual from other amaebi I've had before. The heads were deep fried however it did not come out hot from the fryer, it was more of a room temperature Salmon Sashimi - 7/10 have really nice big cuts of salmon over a bed of daikon. If I could put zero stars I would. I don't normally expect to eat pieces of plastic cut up in my sushi but that's what happened here. Ordered a philly roll and like 3 pieces in I realize there's something hard in it, I open it to investigate and it's some hard plastic (not a shell) it was a piece of plastic. I am absolutely disgusted. I ate two of those pieces and now I have to deal with whatever repercussions are going to manifest from that. Absolutely unacceptable to put non food items in food. This is a tough review to write because the service and people working here were very nice and attentive. But the reality is, the sushi is mediocre at best. I tried both the nigiri and rolls and both were super disappointing. Although more typical of traditional Japanese nigiri, they actually put wasabi underneath the fish so full warning if that's not your thing. Also the ice tea comes from a soda machine! It was gross. How they don't/can't brew their own at a sushi restaurant is just amazing. You'll get good service and the sushi is certainly reasonable, just not up to my standards. read more

Honestly, this place is a gem. Sushi Town is my new go to spot. It's small and unassuming but well worth checking out. Sushi chefs are always friendly and professional. The sashimi is always melt-in-your-mouth buttery soft. Extremely fresh. Sashimi plate A is $30 for 20 pieces, and it's f*cking incredible! Epic bang for your buck, and also top quality. Last night I also had some scallops and oysters, both of which were top quality! I saw some 3 star reviews which I was surprised by but after reading, they are all for the rolls. I personally hate eating a tone of fake crab wrapped in rice with a tiny bit of fish on top. So if you're looking for some fake ass white girl "sushi", you can go anywhere and find California rolls. I was seated at the bar area and ordered the Crunchy roll. I enjoyed it and was pleasantly surprised at the amount and quality for the price. The service was not the best. Not once did a waitress ask me for a drink order, the sushi chef took my food order and I eventually asked him for a water after 10 minutes of sitting at the bar. I noticed the other couples around me and even one party seated after me were asked for their drink orders and checked in on, but not me. The first time I spoke to a waitress was to ask for a box to go and the bill and more water. Then she said sorry a few times. I would recommend this place because of the wide selection of sushi rolls and the good prices but I was not pleased with the service. read more

Granted I went on a Friday night, so it was quite busy. The wait was almost 40 minutes for a table for 2. It's so small and cramped inside. The whole restaurant probably seats about 30 which includes a small sushi bar. There were at least a dozen people waiting. Honestly, I think I was just turned off by the waitresses. If I'm going to spend money on food, especially sushi, I'd expect friendlier service or a they should at least hire waitresses who want to be there. read more

Been here over eight years. Never a disappointment on the quality of the sushi and rolls. I cannot vouch for their other items. Everyone I have introduced this place to became regulars if they lived in the area. First time sushi eaters were hooked! Avid sushi lovers were quite pleased. Great quality and generous size of fish. I don't order sashimi because the portion of fish to rice of the nigiri is ridiculously good. Recommend sitting at the bar and avoiding peak hours because the wait can be quite long. There isn't a good waiting area, unless you enjoy watching cars drive by on the main road. Jin and Paul have been there forever and can help if you need to be gluten free. I have not found another sushi place in Orange County that beats this place in price and quality combo. read more

Our small group arrived at this small Sushi Town restaurant and ordered our food from the menu with our first waiter (a man) We waited on our ordered food as 3 OTHER groups of people came in, sat at 3 separate tables, ordered and were served all their food.... Finally, one of our people in our small group received his "partial" order while the rest of us just continued to wait and wait and watch him eat. Now, nearly 15 minutes later as the OTHER groups who had arrived and ordered well past us were finishing up their meals,I finally asked our now, NEW waitress, as the male waiter had seemingly vanished, where was our order? She went up to the front desk and I guess just discovered it! So another 15 minutes or so rolls past and with everyone finishing up their meals, and we just now finally get ours! The other groups (3 other tables) pay their checks and leave as we now just finally get our food! What the heck? We had to ASK for any refills on water and tea, as the waitress continued to be too busy with "whatever else" she was doing than waiting on us! Service? What SERVICE? We found that if any, it was the WORST SERVICE EVER! And maybe you might know the expression "We looked for the SERVICE now YOU can look for the TIP!" How do these places stay in business with such inadequate employees??? Again, she can just count on her hourly Salary! Cute little spot right up the road from where I was staying. I seriously spent 20 minutes browsing the 50 sushi spots in a five mile radius and landed here. Super impressed with the quality of the fish and felt like these guys do a great job. I enjoyed two salmon, fatty albacore and the pink cadillac from the special menu. My friends have made Sushi Town their new go-to place for sushi and asked me to join them for dinner a couple weeks ago. One thing is certain... Sushi Town must really heart the U S of A... and baseball. This is quickly noted when ordering one of their many creative yet heavily Americanized 'specials'... most involve tempura (heeeeeeere, batter batter batter batter batter...) - and lack of portion control. OMG - HUGE! Also - there's a flat screen hanging at the corner of the sushi bar and what happened to be on? Why, the game, of course. The World Baseball Classic just happened to be airing as I sat down at the sushi bar joining my friends and began to pursue a menu they were already well acquainted with. Dizzamn. Extensive. Overwhelming to my roving eyes and rumbling tummy. I quickly ordered edamame and asked for my favorite sake, but they were out...so I decided to have an Asahi instead. (Mmmm...beer.) I also ordered a spicy tuna roll (one of my favs)... and shortly after a very fresh and tasty roll was set before me. I devoured it quickly. It was good. The sushi chefs are happy fellas... smiles all around. This is definitely a local spot... many of the patrons walking in gave quick hellos on a first name basis which were reciprocated on a first name basis, also. I let the spicy tuna make peace with my belly and as I was doing so...my friends ordered what I *think* they referred to as a spicy crunchy baby lobster roll... I really don't remember the exact phrasing but what was set before them in large dishes looked too good to resist. I had a bite and it was instant love. Of course I ordered one for myself. Now... when they ask if you want it spicy - I highly suggest you do not nod your head up and down like you pop habanero peppers as multi-vitamins and order somewhere. in. the. middle. Unless you're cool with spending 7-10 minutes convincing yourself that you are not having a capsaicin-induced heart attack. I promise - you will soon be able to feel your face... just not immediately. And don't bother trying to coat the highway of doom (ie. your esophagus) with beer because what you need is WATER. LOTS OF IT. STAT. What, you can't talk? Do you realize your tongue is hanging out of your mouth and your taste buds are glowing? Looks like a fire. Tastes like a fire. Trust me!! But anyway... It's a damn good spicy crunchy lobster whatever roll it is. Lobster tempura atop a 6 piece roll, doused in hot stuff. Spicy stuff. Hell, I don't know what it was. Just TRUST me! It's good. And the best of all is the bill came to less than $25. Sweet! All in all, I had enjoyed my dining experience... and though I question some of those Americanized specials...I'd definitely come back again. As I closely watched him worked his magic, I can see him making our orders as Art taking his time with every slice and detail. Big props to him! My order for the night: Sushi- albacore , salmon (albacore was a 5-star...super fresh and tender)(salmon was a 3-star, tasted a little old) Caterpillar roll $8.99 (my absolutely favorite dish of the night. Chef Jin really took his time to cut every single slice of avocado covering my little caterpillar, luv! The blend of all the flavors were perfectly balanced because none of it overwhelmed each other. Make sure to take the whole bite of the sushi, so you can have the sushi experience you deserve!) Sashimi salad - $8.99 (Very generous with their sashimi and it's a hand-tossed. The dressing covered every bits of the greens and the slices of sashimi, simply amazing! it's definitely enough to share, do it!) My favorite thing to order at Sushi Town is the sashimi salad. It's a decent size, has an ample amount of fish, and overall is very refreshing, satisfying, and delicious. It's also very reasonably priced at only $8.99. At Tabento, another Japanese restaurant nearby, a less desirable sashimi salad may be had for almost twice the cost. Ain't nobody got time for that! The sashimi salad is enough of a meal for one; but when in a party of two, I recommend sharing it along with a roll or a few sushi items. This makes for an excellent light, tasty, reasonably priced lunch or dinner! read more
