I'm frankly frustrated at the quality of Asian food in this area. I live a few blocks away from Sushi Yama Asian Bistro but have never tried it. A friend of ours suggested that we go there for dinner. I was somewhat dubious but I'm willing to try most things once. I was pleasantly surprised at the high quality of Sushi Yama. The food was very good, the restaurant was decorated very attractively and the staff was competent and friendly. I love Thai food and am used to wonderful Thai food back in Maryland. I can't say that Sushi Yama is in the class of Ruan Thai, my favorite Thai restaurant in the world located in Wheaton, Maryland. But Sushi Yama is quite good. In fact it is better than any Asian food I've tried in this area. Asian restaurants around here have the bizarre habit of almost always fusing together cuisines mostly with Sushi. It's all right to do that, it just is kind of weird. Anyway, I ordered the Chicken Panang, a popular Thai Curry. Sushi Yama's version was really good. Not burn your face off hot, but nicely spicy. I shared some Sushi with Diane that was very good. I'm not a huge fan of Sushi but this was very tasty although it was falling apart. In addition, Diane had the Chicken with Basil. I tasted it and it was very flavorful. It was my birthday and the restaurant very kindly gave me Green Tea Ice Cream for dessert. I have discovered a new place to go for a nice meal. The great thing is Sushi Yama is open really late and are close enough to visit at midnight or later when I get a craving for Asian food which happens frequently. read more

Whenever a friend or family member would suggest going for sushi I would cringe. Usually I would suggest a million other restaurants to go to instead of the dreaded sushi bar. Last night my friend and fellow Yelper, Beth F. would not take no for an answer. She promised me I would love it and I did. This place is great. It is very modern and has a trendy vibe. The lighting was great, the service was great and the prices were great. At least I think they were but what do I know? Up until last night "sushi" was not my thing. We sat in a private Tatami Room. These secluded rooms are against the left side wall of the restaurant. We opened the curtain and had to step up on this platform to get into our private room. It is customary to remove your shoes and place them in the corner. We gracefully (or not) sat at this very low table. The tatami cushions were our seats. This was my first time I experienced this type of dining. I enjoyed it but after a while I was stretching my legs out. It was almost like sitting on the floor even though our tatami cushions were on a bench. We were given hot towels (oshibori) to wash our hands which I also learned is customary in Japanese restaurants. We placed our drink order (water with lemon) and our waitress brought us two small cups of Daikon and Cucumber salad. This salad has little pieces of diced daikon, cucumber, carrots and a few other veggies. The pickled veggies were in a very light soy dressing. This was very fresh and light and just delicious. When it became apparent that I can not use chopsticks (please don't judge), I was forced to use silverware. I actually used children's chopsticks & I had no trouble with them until my roll started falling apart. That's when I just used my fork. I was open to trying some new things. One I liked and one not so much. The broccoli tempura was delicious. It was fried, what's not to love? I had one large piece and it was good but even better when I dipped it into the eel and hoisin sauce. Beth ordered the Ikura with quail egg and it was beautifully presented in a hollowed out cucumber. I was encouraged to taste one of the little reddish/orange pearls. I was told I would have an orgasm in my mouth, sadly I did not. What I learned is that Ikura is salmon roe. It did taste a little like lox to me but I didn't care for it even though I love lox. I ordered a JB Roll. Instead of having it wrapped in the traditional nori, I requested it to be wrapped in cucumber. My roll consisted of salmon, crab, cream cheese and scallions. Yes I was told that my sushi was "not really" sushi. But to me it was and I loved it. I had this at another sushi restaurant a long time ago and I was not impressed. Last night I was impressed. Next time I will try something new. As long as I can use my children's chopsticks, I am good. I had a relaxing dinner, tried a different type of dining and had great company. Getting up and out of our private Tatami room was easy. I just put my shoes back on and slid down onto the floor. These secluded rooms would make a great place to take a date for a romantic dinner. Even if you don't eat sushi you will find something on the menu to order. They have a full menu of cooked foods including stir fry, noodle dishes, fresh fish, curry dishes and soups. A friend and fellow Yelper asked us to go out for a late bite. She suggested going to Sushi Yama. We had never been there before. Clyde and I went with her, and I'm glad we did. Even though it was nearly 10 pm the restaurant was almost full. The layout was interesting with booths, tables, and private alcoves that they call tatami rooms. We got a booth. We ordered a few rolls to share including a green dragon roll and my favorite, a volcano roll. I didn't think my volcano roll was that good. It came to the table shaped like a teepee instead of flat. The sushi was dry and fell apart when I tried to eat it. The seafood on top didn't help. It wasn't bad enough to send back, but I wouldn't order it there again. In addition to the sushi we ordered Thai food which came with a salad or miso soup. We got the soup which was delicious. I ordered stir fried chicken with basil and Clyde ordered chicken Panang curry. Both dishes came with rice. The Thai food was delicious and the serving sizes were generous. For drinks we went through several carafes of warm sake. The sake was delicious. The service was excellent. They're open seven days a week and until 2 am Wednesday through Saturday. My favorite sushi place in South Florida. My friends and I have been eating here for at least 15 years now. The interior has gone through a lot of changes (warm and modern looking now), but the food has always been the same - excellent. The menu is extensive and delicious. Between my friends and me, we've eaten a lot of sushi from here, but here are some of my faves: Salmon Sashimi, Spicy Salad Sushi Yama's Special, Salmon Skin Handroll, Crispy Salmon Roll, Salmon Tempura Roll and Black Dragon Roll. Even the kids love it here. They always eat every morsel of their salmon teriyaki kids box. If you're in the Boca area, I highly recommend you try Sushi Yama. I was introduced to Sushi Yama by Guil. M. A late night of hanging out with friends. A couple of cocktails later we decide to get sushi. This was the only place open late. We get there with our friends and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and flavor of the food. The fish is very fresh and very good quality. Ever time we come here we are never disappointed with the sushi. We have tried almost every single item on the menu. But we always get the Panang Curry beef which we order extra spicy but never seems to happen. However the flavor is just amazing. The Spicy Beef appetizer is never really spicy, so again we get extra spicy and still doesn't get much spicier. Something that has always been amazing is the Shrimp Fried Rice and for the price you cannot beat it!!! It comes steaming hot with these big lump shrimp cooked to absolute perfection. Almost everyday they have some kind of drink special like two for one on beer. It i usually after 10 pm. If you get the chance to try this place do it. We will be coming back here many more times. The fact that they are open until 2am in Boca Raton serving FRESH fish should get them 5 stars alone. Seriously, Saturday nights after work (I'm talking like past midnight) I can stroll in here and order sushi. That's like a dream come true, not only for me but everyone in Boca. Sushiyama is a hot spot during regular business hours or after hours. Service is always on point and I come here quite regularly. I've yet to have a bad experience and honestly do not anticipate having one. If you're looking for a good or new sushi spot in the area, I would try it out. My 2 go-to rolls are Black Dragon (HEAVEN) & Daimyo. Daimyo is pretty much an array of fish rolled up and black dragon is heaven rolled up. Both equally as awesome. I literally get them both every time and eat them all! Sushiyama is far from stingy. They give you a ton of fish in each roll. Not like many other sushi places that have more rice than fish lol. That's the worst. Their rolls are also substantially large, which I appreciate. You get a lot of bang for your buck. Never a problem with parking. There's a huge lot out front. You can sit in doors or out. If you sit in doors, bring a light sweater or jacket. It gets a bit chilly in there. I've also eaten their miso soup, house salad, and seaweed salad. Nothing to run home about. Tastes like every other place. Still good though. Oh I've had their edamame too which is another generic thing to eat. Taste good. I've shared the pad Thai once previously with my mom. It's a huge serving, even though it was lunch, so thank god we shared! My dad and husband don't eat sushi and they never object to coming to sushiyama. They both usually get some sort of chicken dish with rice and veggies. Good Asian restaurants are hard to come by in Boca Raton, let alone a quality Japanese restaurant. You would think authentic Japanese food would be readily available in the south Palm Beach and north Broward counties considering the early 20th century Japanese immigrant wave who landed in South Florida (i.e. George Morikami and cronies; the founder of Morikami Museum in Delray Beach and renowned pineapple farmer). I have only ate at Sushi Yama one time, but I was very happy with the restaurant in it's entirety; the food was authentic and the sushi rolls were not drenched in sweet sauces without our request, they have izakaya-like seating ("izakaya"; traditional Japanese bar) which is cool, and our waitress was awesome. $38 total; one small hot sake, green wakame salad, hot veggie soba with shrimp/veggie tempura, two sushi rolls 1)shrimptempura roll 2) "honeymoon roll"; chicken katsu/cucumber/lettuce roll with tonkatsu sauce on the side, a first for me and so good! Nice spot but a bit hard to find. There's no signage near the street, so I entered the shopping center where it's located and poked around a bit until I hit the jackpot. F**ing Florida, everything is in a shopping center. The place is fairly modern and quite clean. One thing that threw me for a loop though was the lighting. It's super dark inside which made it a bit disorienting to walk in and out of, considering the crazy summer sun. On the other hand, that low light level makes Sushi Yama a nice intimate dinner spot or a chilled out place to grab a drink. As for the food, I got 2 rolls, the Super Yama and the Green Dragon and they were huge! Twelve big pieces in each roll, heaps of fresh fish, good flavor. The pricing was a bit up there, like $12 a roll, but these were their "signature" rolls so I wasn't that surprised. I also wanted to mention their menu which was huge. I forget exactly but I remember the waiter saying they had something like 200 items on the menu and it's not just sushi. They have noodles, soups, the whole 9 yards. Lots of stuff to try next time. The owner should be embarrassed of how she treats her customers, especially one who has been coming to sushi Yama for the last 20+ years! I specified multiple times that I need my food items to be gluten free. She took over 20 minutes to take our food order and said she confirmed with the kitchen chef. When I asked the owner to come over she yelled back she was too busy to assist me. When the food finally came out it was covered in gluten sauce. The waitress again said it was gluten free. When the owner finally came over I told her and she said NO that is not gluten free. She took my meal and brought back a new plate with 1/2 the amount of food that should be. Not only did they skimp on food, more importantly they didn't get a sh*t about my health condition and served a celiac gluten free person a full plate of gluten. The owner then said I should been more specific to my waitress and that it was my fault in a nasty way. I am stumped. I have never been treated with such disrespect. So sad I have loved coming here all these years and will never ever go back and cannot recommend it to anyone. Complete disrespect and zero care for health concerns. The boats are lovely and menu is extensive. Personally, I enjoy the special rolls! Also, they have a ohitashi that is out of this world. My boyfriend favors the "Combination B dinner- all salmon" Service is always friendly and quick, and they make special accommodations when asked. The renovations make it a fun & hip place to hang. This Strip-Mall Sushi restaurant certainly doesn't serve Strip-Mall Quality Sushi! It's really good! The inside looks kind of like a 1990s SoBe night club: Dark and Neon and Wood and Dark... and Dark. I liked it, but it wasn't great for my Foodtography! Haha. I got the Chirashi, which was very fresh assortment of sashimi served on a plate over a circle-mold of rice. It was certainly filling and very good. I would like it if they added a little of the "Umami-bits" that I'm used to in my Chirashi: Some Salmon Roe, maybe some pickled veggies, mushrooms, Tamago... Something for that little extra Oomph. But that's a personal preference, and I certainly can't complain. We sampled their Seaweed Salad, a basic sushi roll, house salad (their Miso-Honey dressing was fabulous, and the ingredients in the salad were fresh and crisp!)... Everything was good and priced well. What bumps Sushi Yama up for me is the service. One waitress remembers my mom by name every time and is so super friendly! I want to like this place more, but it's hit or miss for me. I used to go a lot back in 2011-2012 with my friends, and I remember loving it, mostly for the Saki bombs. But recently is hasn't lived up to par for me. I think the sushi fish is just mediocre quality, which is something you can't really hide or make up for. The pros: the ambiance is soothing and sophisticated, the lighting, the special seating (the back has a long table for bigger parties, the smaller private rooms where you have to take off your shoes to sit; I forget what they're called), the service and staff, the dessert is delicious you have to try the FBI (fried banana ice cream). I also like how they accommodated my friend with gluten and dairy allergies. They had gluten free soy sauce and happily made accommodations to her meal. The plum sake (Hana kohaku) was fantastic. The cons: like I said, the sushi itself is nothing special. It's just not my favorite. I realized this when I got the ahi tuna salad; there wasn't anything for the sushi to hide behind, and it was pretty bland and didn't taste fresh. Sushiyama has moved to a new location. But do not fear, you can still find it. It's right next door to the old location. While I didn't think it was in need of an upgrade, the new location is chic and refreshing. The staff is friendly and prompt and they now offer unlimited refills on the green iced tea (yum). However, the yummy salad they used to give before the meal is no more. I say one thing cancels the other. I know I reduced my rating to 4 stars, but that's still very good. The reduction is only due to my having traveled and trying new places, so there's is more to compare. read more

I sat at the bar and it was great to see the sushi made in front of you and made so beautifully! They sure know how to setup a plate. That's what this place is all about right? The rice is so soft - somewhat mushy. I ordered the spicy salmon roll which was surprisingly much bigger than I had thought. I counted 11 pieces - wow! After the 4th piece of this roll, it started to have a weird taste to it. It was pretty gross. I decided to stop eating - mostly because i was admittedly full but also because it truly did not taste good. I also got the spicy tuna roll. It was better than the last roll but still.. Meh. All in all, I'm not sure I could like any of the rolls here fully due to the overly soft mushy rice. Just doesn't cut it for me. Perhaps other dishes are good? This used to be my number one sushi place to go to. Now they have redecorated, going from cozy & comfy to dark & chic, but it definitely lost its original ambiance that I liked so much. Also, most sushi places start you off with a complimentary salad or app that gets your palate going. They stopped doing that after the renovation which is quite disappointing! I will still go back there though because the serve the most delicious Spicy Tuna Salad I have ever tasted with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, oranges, scallions all tossed in a tangy kimchee sauce & fresh tuna. The reviews are spot on, we really had a wonderful time. Drinks were well made, sushi rolls were amazing, we ordered so much that we not only walked out stuffed but had enough for 2 more meals the following day, and for a birthday dinner the pricing was not bad at all! Tried the sushi combo #1 (bento box lunch special). $11 seems steep for a lunch special.... Having said that, the quality of the food was great. Very fresh and plentiful. Being a party of 1, I sat at the bar and saw the chefs prepare the beautiful rolls. Service was pretty slow - so this definitely isn't a get in/get out place. Sushi Yama at Palmetto and Powerline in Boca is my favorite local sushi restaurant. I have to say they have the best ginger dressing anywhere that I have tried. The atmosphere is great, service is attentive enough, pricing is reasonable and the sushi is always fresh. I usually get hot tea, a green salad, and a tuna roll with avocado, jalapeño and tempura flakes. It is delicious and all for $12 and change with tax, not tip. Service was great, our server may was so helpful and sweet and really made sure we got everything we needed. Sushi quality was great too, we enjoyed trying 5 rolls, all good in their own way, my favorite being the spicy tuna and the daimo roll. I enjoyed the steamed gyoza $7 but was surprised it only came with 5 gyoza instead of an even number like 6. The cons: lunch specials are terrible sushi wise basically no options. They dont have fountain drinks only cans which to me sucks because no refills and they are in my opinion overpriced for what they are and the location they are in. Spicy tuna was 8 instead of the usual 6 atnkther places and they had several rolls such as green red and black dragons priced at 16-18 when those types are usually about 12 at other places. Bills totaled 66 before tip for two people (4 rolls, 1 coke, 1 steamed gyoza) Would put this spot in our sushi rotation but not at the top of the list. read more

They have a Japanese and a Thai menu. While there are plenty of better Thai restaurants in Boca, this is definitely thr best and freshest sushi in Boca for many years. We have been customers for over 20 years and have had little complaints. When I came to pick up a take out order, I forgot my credit card, so I called my wife to call in the number, though the person who is always at the hostess station said she could not do that. I offered to explain how to put my number in the credit card machine, so she could take my money. I asked to speak to a manager, that maybe they could show her how. She said the manager was not there and she walked away. Another woman at the front said her name was Lena, and she was the manager. Very disappointed.
