I really love the sushi here. The veggies rolls are my favorite and I love being able to see them actually make everything there. The veggies are fresh and they have aspargus, avacados etc. I also like the tuna rolls as well. Revisited our local sushi joint. As always, place is small with basically no parking and you don't even get an indoor seat unless you have a reservation. Anyway, food was excellent! Udon was well balanced with depth in flavour. Even the miso soup was thick; liquid and miso was well merged. Sushi is fresh with rich colors. Chirashi dish separated the fish and rice. Fish portion was generous, fresh and flavorful. Within the rice, there were various cooked fish where other joints would not add due to cost. This used to be my go-to sushi spot in town. Their sushi was high quality and fresh. Service was excellent. Then, a few years ago something about the restaurant changed. I think it may have been management. The restaurant decor looked like a Thai restaurant and the food quality just wasn't as good. I stopped going here for a few years. Inside is small and very loud. Parking is a challenge. Then a few weeks ago I found out they have a very reasonably priced lunch chirashi special, so I thought I'd give this place another try. The price is unbeatable for the amount of food you get. Quality is average. I also ordered the unagi on rice. I actually wanted one piece of unagi, but I guess the person who took my order misunderstood what I said and ordered me the unagi on rice. Even though that wasn't what I wanted, it was pretty good. Unagi has a nice sweet flavor to it. I got to the restaurant around 12:20ish and it was packed!! There was about a 15 minute wait for a table. Yes I know.. the chirashi is awesome. Sushi Yoshi is one of my favorite sushi places in NoVa, however I have run into rude servers/hostess too many times. I went on a weekend dinner right at 5 when they reopen for dinner since I didn't have a reservation - it was for 2 people so I figured I could get one of the small seats that are kind of in everyone's way and no one really wants to sit there. I was told that since I did not have a reservation and if I wanted to eat, I'd have to finish and get out by 45 minutes so they could accomodate the table for those who made reservations. I've never seen a restaurant fill ALL the tables with reservation so that walk-ins would be unwelcome - I felt like I was being some sort of nuisance by asking to eat. If the hostess could have handled it a bit better and more gracefully, I would have walked away fine but her attitude was unacceptable. Yes your chirashi may be good but I'd rather go somewhere that I feel welcomed. read more

We are fortunate to live in an area with an abundance of great sushi joints: Sushi Yoshi is one of them and my absolute favorite. We visit this place at least once a month and I always order the chirashi, both for lunch and dinner. Their specialty rolls are awesome and reasonably priced; I find it fun to try different rolls on the menu. If you are looking for small plates, you've come to the right place as they have many. I am relunctant to write a review of this place for fear it might be swamped with too many customers and the charm of this little restaurant would be lost. But I cannot justify keeping a good thing to myself so against my better judgement here goes...... Sushi Yoshi is a charming little restaurant off the main thoroughfare on Route 123 in Vienna. It is situated at the end of a row of shop houses (there is a cool doggy store next to it!). Parking may be a little tricky during peak hours but if you look hard enough (or circle enough times) you'd be able to get a spot. You basically have these choices: (1) park in the very tiny private lot behind Sushi Yoshi, (2) look for street parking along Church Street / Center Street, (3) park at underground lot at 111 Church Street (you have to look out for the entrance along the same row of shophouses as Sushi Yoshi or you'd miss it in a heartbeat!) Now for the food. The fish is definitely fresh. I have been there a few times and very fortunately I have never been disappointed (p/s I have only been there on Saturdays). The tempura is crispy, light and fresh. You get that they use fresh oil (there is no stale oily smell you get from kitchens reusing their oil to fry). The food presentation is beautiful and you are almost relunctant to disburb the arrangment! I liked the shrimp tempura and the chirashi best. The chirashi is not your ordinary rice below with fish thrown on top. Instead, you are presented with a plate of rice with root vegetables arranged on the rice topped with a nice piece of unagi (grilled eel). Yum. The presentation is finished with a long plate of raw fish delight! Double yum! All very pretty. I regret that I have not had the presence of mind to bring my camera along (unlike Alicia G who almost always has hers with her!) to take pictures! The picture gallery on their website does not do justice to what their food actually look like! For the vegetarians out there - dont be dismayed! You can ask for a vegetarian version of the chirashi which they are very willing to accomodate. The a la carte sushi is pretty good since the emphasis is freshness here. The ikura (salmon cavier) was fresh and plump as it burst on the first bite! I definitely liked the fact that it did not feel as if I was having one of the cod liver oil pills! The spider roll (tempura soft shell crab) was plain delicious! I must admit that I am a "purist" so I have not ordered anything that has spicy mayo sauce squirted all round the plate so I cant comment on the "special" rolls. The service can be sketchy. On some ocassions, they were quick. On others, they were really slow. So I guess there is room for improvement here although they are always very friendly. There is a very small waiting space out by the front door so if you have no reservations and the place is packed, you may have to move outside (not great in wintry weather!!) The great thing about this place is that there are not overpriced given the quality of the food you get. I would definitely recommend this place. Only wished I discovered it yonks earlier! Just a note, Sushi Yoshi is closed on Sundays. They are not opened for Monday lunch either. They do lunch from Tues - Sat from 11.30am till 2.30pm and dinner Mon - Thurs from 5.00pm to 9.30 pm and dinner on Fri and Sat till 10pm. read more

i came here for lunch on the weekend. it was packed so i thought it was going to be a great experience. the sushi was good. but i wouldnt say it was memorable. i like the setup of the place. was a good atmosphere but the service was pretty bad. me and my gf sat at the sushi bar as all the seats were taken. we were placed in the corner of the sushi bar. basically the worst and hardest to access seats of the entire place. maybe that is why the waiter couldnt really access us that easily and i felt i got poor service. i know the place was busy but it took us a REALLY long time to receive our food. and it was worse because we sat at the sushi bar so watching the sushi chefs make the food just made us hungrier. but that is not the reason why i gave this place 3 stars lol. we were waiting for our food for about 20+ mins. and in hungry time thats like over an hour. this food was decent so i might try it out again when its not as busy and see how my experience is. read more

I came here with my significant other for her birthday along with her brother and his wife last night, and I don't think we'll be back again. When I got to the restaurant, they asked if I had a reservation (which I didn't, first time), I said no and they asked me for my telephone number so that they could call me in about 30 minutes to sit down. So we go walking around the area for that amount of time. Well, my gf's brother and wife get there a little after us and they see a table for 4 and asked if it was available and the waitress said sure and seated them. Lo and behold he called us and said the table was ready. Awesome, the restaurant didnt even bother to call me to tell me a table was ready. I knew this was a bad sign for the evening. So we get seated (@6:52pm) and I start to look around and I see there are about 14 small tables in the restaurant along with a sushi bar area. So all in all, you could probably fit about 30 people max in this restaurant. There were 26 people in the restaurant including us and 3 waitress' and 2 sushi chefs. So we sit down and order drinks. The gf's brother orders a Guiness (which is on the menu) and the waitress says that they dont carry that. We pointed it out to her on the menu and she still proceeds to tell us they dont carry it. Um.. if you dont carry it at all, why the heck is it on the menu? Anywho, we proceed to order other drinks. Once our drinks were served the waitress then took our order. We proceeded to order the appetizers and noticed there was something labeled "NEW! Takuyaki" which looked interesting. So I ordered that, and the waitress tells me they dont have that either. Oook... something so "NEW!" that they didn't even carry it. Wtf.. seriously.. why the heck would you have it on the menu if you don't even have it in stock on the weekend? Anywho, we ended up ordering some tuna salad dish, edamame, shumai (shrimp dumplings) and spicy mussels for appetizers. We then gave her our order for sushi (which was about 48 pieces total) and pork katsu. While sitting there chit chatting the evening away, we noticed that couples were coming in and getting seated and getting their food way before we were. I looked down at the time and it was 8:05pm. Holy shit, we've been sitting here for over an hour and we dont even have the edamame or any other appetizer on the table. So I asked the waitress if our appetizers were coming out soon, and she gave me the excuse that they were really busy and that they were making it now. I gave her a puzzled look and said that the edamame takes 5 minutes to boil, we dont even have that yet. So continues to tell me that they are busy, but not a single apology. I start to get pretty steamed at this point, but I maintain my composure because it is the better half's birthday dinner. Lo and behold, 2 minutes later, edamame arrives. So it took the restaurant over 1 hour and 15 minutes to get us edamame. After another 15 minutes passed we asked about our food again. I guess they thought the edamame would quell our hunger for food since we've been there for 1 hour and 30 minutes already. The waitress continues to tell us that the order is a big order and that they are busy. I gingerly told her that that is bullshit, considering everyone that has been seated after us has already been served their food and are almost finished. Next thing you know, 5 minutes later, our sushi arrives. If you have noticed by reading this, we have still not gotten any of our appetizers yet. So I ask AGAIN about the appetizers, and the waitress continues to tell me that they are busy. At this time, I'm about to shove my fist down her throat. So we ask for a manager. As a reminder, this place is about as big as my bedroom, so getting the manager who I can see near the sushi bar should not take too long. It took her 10 minutes to get to our table to see what the issues were. So I tell her about the appetizers not showing up, the 1.5 hour wait for any type of food, and how her waitress keeps telling they are busy but yet have time to fill everyone else's order before ours. I then cancel the appetizers because at this point, it's useless. She tells me that the pork katsu is on its way. great, I'll hold my breath. It took us almost 2 hours to get our food, and we finished and scarfed it up in 10 minutes since we were starving. If you asked me how the food tasted I would tell you that it was just ok. Is it worth the bull shit that came with the restaurant? Oh hell no. I would say, if this restaurant closed up for business tomorrow, Vienna could probably fill that space with a better place. read more

Our food was great for lunch yesterday! My mom and I got to have lunch together and sit outside- we had the fried oysters (I loved these- the sauces were average but the fried oyster was so good you could have eaten it alone), and shared the sashimi lunch and a spicy scallop and avocado roll. My favorite thing was the sashimi. There were so many types of fish included and I loved all of it! Everyone was very nice and it was very busy even for a weekday lunch. I'd maybe think of reservations. There's street parking and garage parking- all free. I think there could be improvements to the outdoor seating (they have these folding type chairs that while in theory are cool, look dinged up). The inside is fine, but if I'm going here my ideal goal is to sit outside. I hope they adjust some of the chairs etc- maybe try to have more matching sets including matching spare chairs. For example, I ate at Sushi Yoshi two years ago - as a Junior - after being treated by a friend in the construction business. Sadly, our favorite sushi restaurant treated us like pooh. My wife and I live on a limited income and "treat" ourselves out a few times a month so we favor special dining experiences. This morning we made a reservation for two for outside seating (the weather was perfect). We have been frequent diners at Yoshi so we know to get things done well in advance to get requested seating - we live about 18 miles away. We arrived early for our reservation and after waiting for the hostess to finish a phone call she pushed me aside to assist the people behind me in line behind me and seated them at the only available outside table. When I protested she claimed that they had an earlier reservation (which wasn't to be found on her sheet - it showed our reservation time with no name and none earlier). She explained that because the reservation person hadn't taken our name (they never do) we would have to be seated at the sushi bar since the wait for outside was over an hour. We left and had a wonderful meal at the outside terrace at Ariake in Reston. We've introduced many friends to Yoshi but now we've got to take our business elsewhere. Everyone has experienced restaurants that get "too big for their britches" but I'd never have thought that Yoshi would dishonor their elder patrons in this way. Honoring reservations is the simplest form of respect and if a restaurant can't do something so simple, what's the point of dining out? read more

I've come here twice: once for happy hour and once for dinner. The happy hour specials are great for cheap, high-quality sushi, but the opportunity cost is that the selection is slim and you can only order the "regular" stuff. The salmon belly is particularly delicious. For dinner, we ordered a few rolls and shared the Chirashi which is an amazing deal (even more amazing at lunch time). A Chirashi is basically the chef's selection of raw fish over a bed of rice. I've ordered a chirashi at other restaurants before, but nothing compares to this chirashi because what comes out when you order a chirashi at sushi yoshi is like an edible sushi rainforest. It is a beautifully-arranged and colorful melange of lettuce, tempura, lotus root, tamago, radishes, and a bunch of other delicious vegetables over a bed of scrumptious rice. The generous selection and variety of sashimi is served on the side to be eaten with your gigantic rainforest masterpiece. It makes eating it an adventure because seriously, you keep digging in it and you uncover new surprises to eat your raw fish with. Service is prompt and you are given a small ginger soy salad and miso soup with your meal. The restaurant is tiny though and waits are common on the weekends. I would call ahead for reservations if you don't want to be standing around awkwardly peering down other people while they are eating their food. read more

cozy little sushi spot in the heart of vienna. there are many sushi restaurants in the vienna and tysons area but what makes sushi yoshi different is that they give you tons of options: full rolls, half rolls, brown rice, white rice, soy paper, light soy sauce, etc. the possibilities are endless and you can really customize your order or stick to the basics. the fish is fresh. service is a little bit better than mediocre. the restaurant is pretty small so i highly recommend making a reservation even on a weeknight. * to note: they close pretty early (9 pm) and last call is around 8:15 pm and they make sure you are aware of it. haha. you get the most bang for your buck here if you order the chirashi bowl (~$20). it's a heaping bowl of rice with toppings and then a generous side platter of sashimi. read more

I've heard really good things about this place so I was excited to try it out. The food was great. I ordered sashimi and three rolls. The Tim Tim roll and Costa Rica roll was awesome. The atmosphere is quiet, small and cozy. Good place for a date night. It's just the service here that really brought my rating down to a 3. It seemed really busy so I did not mind waiting 10 minutes to be approached by a waitress and with water. She seemed overwhelmingly busy but at this point, again, I did not mind because I, too, am a waitress in Arlington and I know what it feels like on a busy night. Wanna hear a funny little story? So I was supposed to meet this guy on a quasi-date at the Vienna Inn last night. I was really not in the mood for chili dogs and fries but wanted sushi. So I google mapped what Sushi places were close by and this one was literally right around the corner. Parking is a little dicey (maybe there's a lot in the back, I'm not sure) but when I'm in downtown Vienna, I use street parking most of the time anyways. I walk in and sit at the sushi bar. Just one. Always just one..hahaha! The bar stools are tall as hell. I'm only 5 feet tall and on the heavy side. It was kinda hilarious. They have a small selection of happy hour sushi and appetizers so I got my usual: Tamago, Kappa, Shitake Mushroom and a seaweed salad. All for 14 bucks. The Tamago is the biggest slices I've ever had and they tasted great! The seaweed salad also came with 2 slices of lotus root, which was a great surprise! Since I'm a veggie sushi girl, I just observed other items they were making. Some of the dishes they were making were absolutely gorgeous!!! The colors and the plating...just beautiful. Oh! And they also have gluten free soy sauce for those of you with allergies. I think this place is just adorable and intimate and the quality for the price I paid was excellent. Seriously...I had 4 giant Tamago, 6 kappa rolls, 6 shiitake mushroom rolls, a nicely sized seaweed salad and they also use the non-pink-fluorescent ginger too! All for $14 bucks (plus I left like a $6 tip because the waitresses were very sweet). Great value! So, I go to Vienna Inn and wait. And wait. And wait. I check my email and he decided to let me know that he had to work late. 15 minutes before we were supposed to meet. I said thanks for letting me know so I could leave and stop looking like a loser and go sit in traffic for an hour. This morning I got an email from him with a picture of the massive accident he got into on his way home from work. He is okay but he titled the email to me "karma?" I would never wish something like that on anybody but couldn't help myself and felt a twinge of satisfaction. read more

Sushi Yoshi developed a reputation in our Vienna as a good, cosy place to have a good and a nice meal. Lunch prices are good, appetizers are good although I had to return back a grilled eel that did not taste like an eel- soft and moist. Yoshi is good but not hospitable, no refills on soft drinks. I was not the only one shocked but also a table next to mine with six Japanese Americans medical providers when they asked to get a second on their sodas. While the service is fairly decent - their staff is extremely attentive and well-informed, it does not make up for the fact that their products are less than par. Now I'm certainly not a sushi connoisseur, however, I must say that the sushi here was downright disappointing. I'm sorry, but the Sushi Yoshi Roll looked absolutely disgusting. I couldn't even get myself to eat a piece, it was that gross. Think of ground up beef mashed into meatballs (actually tuna) and stuffed into a lettuce wrap with mango sauce on top. How can you call that sushi?! For the price we paid for dinner, we would've been better off with going to Sweet Ginger or Yama (my family's long-time go to pick). Long story short, stay away from this place if you love or appreciate authentic sushi. read more

this place used to have good food but idk whether it's due to covid, our lunch experience was just terrible and disappointing. chicken donkatsu was so thin and dry and the sauce tasted worse than what I get from a store. only thing good from a territaki salmon bento box was the salmon; tempura tasted like it's been frozen and fried. actually the donkatsu probably was frozen too. food just doesn't taste fresh yet took more than 40 minutes to get it. only one service staff each for inside and outside didn't help and we saw at least two tables leaving bc no one came to take the orders. then the most annoying thing was the constant phone ringing sound. why do they set it so loud? just wasn't a good experience eating. not sure if we'll ever go back anymore. read more

I'm conflicted... I typically have always liked it here as a staple good place to go for sushi. The last time i went in there right before they were closing for lunch.. perhaps this is why? but still no excuse..but the boyfriend and I both had horrible stomach aches for the rest of the afternoon/evening... lasted for hours.....horrible and scary to mess with bad sushi but that's what it seemed like. I visited this restaurants a few more times. I noticed that the owner doesn't say "welcome" or "thank you" to all of the customers. He only does to the regulars and --- who knows. He looks at you when you come in or leave. He even stares at you without a smile or a word. It's very weird. I know it doesn't matter how much $$ you spend on their food. Perhaps they had just misplaced their mojo that night. I'm a big fan of Sakana, a couple of blocks away (that and Sushi Taro in DC are, in my opinion, the two best sushi restaurants in the region). However, at some level I must be a nationalist: I assumed that a Japanese-owned sushi joint should be better--or, at least, more authentic--than a Korean-owned place. If so, then perhaps "authentic" means "lower quality fish?" We walk in and wait for 5 minutes at the unstaffed hostess podium. Waitresses are walking up and down the two narrow aisles, making eye contact, but making no effort to either seat us or get a hostess. Finally, the hostess emerges from the back room. No apology or welcome (nor the traditional welcome from the sushi bar)--just a quick grabbing of menus and walking to one of the empty tables. Not a great start, but hey--maybe this is authentic? Point to Sakana. So, we sit and look at the menus. I will say that the selection is quite broad, both in sushi and in cooked entrees. Point to Yoshi. We order: Braised duck breast appetizer Ankimo (monkfish liver) appetizer Sanshoku chirashi (salmon, white tuna, and eel sashimi on a bowl of sushi rice) Uni (sea urchin) sushi Unagi (freshwater eel) nigiri Sake (salmon) nigiri Botan-ebi (large, raw shrimp--"peony shrimp"; like amaebi, but bigger) Salmon belly sashimi Toro (fatty tuna) sashimi Uzura (quail egg) sushi (with tobiko, the flying fish roe) Escolar (erroneously labeled as "white tuna") sashimi Chicken curry udon (noodle soup) Fresh wasabi The way they do their a la carte ordering is actually quite smart: The order sheet is laminated, and you use a dry-erase marker, saving paper. The one star is for this environmental consciousness. Point to Yoshi. I also like that you order each sushi or sashimi item per piece, so you can get a pretty broad selection (as I did) without being a pig. Point to Yoshi. They were out of duck and ankimo, which was a real shame, since ankimo is one of the items on which I judge a sushi restaurant (along with fatty tuna (toro), sea urchin (uni), escolar, and salmon (sake)). If you're going to have an item on your "Specials" menu, stock it. This was a Saturday at lunchtime, not a Wednesday. Point to Sakana. Ah, well. At least the waitress did not pressure me to substitute other items for the out-of-stock dishes. The food arrives piecemeal: First the soup, then some of my sushi, then my daughter's chirashi. When you have some dishes that need to be enjoyed hot, and others that are best cool, it probably isn't the best idea to bring one ten minutes before the other. Bringing the three-year-old's order last is just plain stupid. Big point to Sakana. This place would still get three or four stars, despite the service, if the fish had been stellar. As it was, the toro was too chewy (more chu-toro rather than otoro) and overly cold (too recently defrosted). Yes, deep freezing kills contaminants and is required by law. No, you should not serve the fish before it has returned to edible consistency. Point to Sakana. The escolar was good, but nowhere near as good as it is at Sakana. The uni tasted stale. It reminded me of the first time I tried uni, after which it was three years before I would try it again. Big point to Sakana. The sake tasted fresh, but the consistency was stringy. There was no discernable difference between the sake and the salmon belly. Again, point to Sakana. The botan-ebi, uzura, and unagi were excellent, as was the curry udon. Point to Yoshi. In fact, I had the thought at that moment in time that we would come back just to try other cooked dishes (but certainly not the sushi again). To this point (pun intended), they would still have gotten two or three stars. Until I got the bill. On which was the out-of-stock ankimo and the duck breast. When I (very politely) pointed out that they had charged me for these two items, the waitress said, "you didn't get those?" and walked away without another word. I kid you not. Loss of all points for Yoshi. While the bill was corrected, there was no apology for the error, which leads me to believe that maybe it wasn't accidental. Or is failing to take responsibility for a mistake part of the "authentic" Japanese dining experience? Maybe my expectations were too high. I'll tell you one thing: Even in my secret heart, I will never again assume that a Japanese sushi chef is more likely to prepare sushi well (or take pride in his sushi skills) than a Korean. The BEST Sushi Restaurant in Town! Most of the Japanese love this place. It's authentic, tastes fresh and the menus are presented nicely like in Japan. My favorite has to be the Chirashi-zushi. My casual dining selections are kare-rice, vegi sushi or spicy okonomiyaki. Lots to choose. Make reservations before you go! It's a small cozy dining but well worth the authentic Japanese sushi atmosphere. read more

I got my chance to taste their food again in a long time. I'm not sure that the management has changed but the food doesn't seem as good as it used to be. They were still very busy on a Saturday afternoon with all the tables taken and a few people waiting outside. Most of the sushi chefs are no longer Japanese nor Asian... only one was from what we were able to see. The food just seemed average or a little better than average. We had an assortment of sushi, specialty rolls, standard rolls, teriyaki, tempura, katsu, and udon. Nothing really stood out. It wasn't nor was it great. So I'd give it a 3 1/2 stars. read more

Delightful and busy sushi restaurant in Vienna. Excellent, friendly service. We came without a reservation and sat at the bar -- on a Saturday at lunchtime. So always consider making a reservation. Even on Sat at lunchtime, a lot of the tables were reserved, which tells you a lot about Sushi Yoshi's loyal following. Sushi a la carte was delicious. Fried oysters very good. Vegetable tempura disappeared quickly. Great meal, and we will be back. (Tables outside were open -- but that's outside in July without AC.) read more

This is my neighborhood joint. Really small tight place. Get a reservation. Period. Good selection of sushi, sashimi and cooked dishes. Multiple great experiences with the Sushi deluxe platter for $25. Chirashi bowl for lunch is a terrific deal. Complimentary house tea. Fat hand rolls. read more

Came in for dinner tonight with friends that have been here before. We ordered many dishes. I had the sushi sashimi combo and five pieces of eel nigiri. My daughters ordered the binto box. We all had miso soup and salad and adamame. The restsurant was not very busy. After dinner both nyself and my order daughters have diarrhea upon returning home. This would have been a one star review if it was not for the fact staff were very friendly and helpful. read more
