I waited 3 hours once. And I walked right in another time. But today it was a 2 hours wait to be seated. All because I was craving the "eggs". And maybe a combination salad. I discovered a new beer for me. Mare Island Brewing Co's War Bonds reminds me of Anchor Brewing's steam beer and that 1st icy cold sip was divine. Loved spooning the olive oil vinaigrette with equal parts Dijon mustard and crab fat emulsified in over the combination salad. And I ordered a "dozen eggs", thinly sliced raw scallops dotted with Sriracha floating in a shallow pool of ponzu. Heaven. The line wasn't as bad when I left but I'm glad I made it in today since they're closed for just over a week's vacation starting tomorrow, the 4th of July! One of the best places I've ever eaten, hands down. Get there early, but the line is worth it regardless. The service is amazing, all of the servers will resemble the photos on the wall, because it's a family establishment. Order a beer no matter the time, it's a must. Go on your day off. They always have a line out the door, but fast. We were crammed at the counter like sardines. We ordered the crab cocktail and the Sicilian sashimi. Crab was fresh, salmon was buttery. Some crab shells and maybe plastic? In the crab. It's a raw bar so there's really no flavor. I didn't like the bread. The Sicilian sashimi was just raw fish with olive oil, salt, pepper, capers, and onion. Personally, I didn't like the staff/overall vibe. I felt like staff were aggressive and miserable. It's San Francisco so it's pricey. Worth it? Not in my opinion. I'd skip this tourist trap. Personally, This place was just not for me. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

Great recs and short convos as his staff and himself kept busy constantly moving for their customers. Met some locals and some out of towners; all of which enjoy this experience. Came for a few items, But ended up staying for quite awhile enjoying Kevjns countless recs. Nice little bubbly and taps to enjoy the meal as well. Definitely coming back with more people. 2 hour wait after arriving at 7:50am on a Saturday. Food was good but nothing out of this world. We did get some of their top items but we didn't get the crab back since they were out. 1. Clam chowder- delicious but not a lot of clams, and watery thickness compared to other chowders. 2. Crab legs, they helped with pre-cuts making it easier to get to the meat, but I would've preferred it served with butter and lemons. 3. Sashimi- delicious. We got the medium and it was perfect to share with my husband. 4. This place is a staple establishment in the Bay Area. They opened their door in 1912 and has been in the same spot since. My friend and I got here at around 9 am on a weekday so we did not have to wait in line at all. The place is quaint and small. It has this old school vibe to it. They only have a long marbled bar counter with 18 wooden stools. My friend and I ordered clam chowder, mixed dozen oysters and bread + butter to start with. We were given 3 different of oysters. They were very fresh. We did not recall their names lol. We didn't like the bigger one cause they were not a lot of taste to it. They were meaty though. The other two kinds had some flavors and a bit sweeter. Moving on the clam chowder, it was not what I expected. They called in Boston clam chowder but the broth was too thin. You could see the separation between the clam juice and the cream. I live in Cleveland and we would have clambake every Fall so I am very familiar with New England clam chowders. Also, I did my own version of clam chowders tasting in Boston as well. I wouldn't call Sean Oyster Depot's clam chowder version a Boston clam chowder. It was a bit fishy as well. Apparently, they had a secret menu. They offered Sicilian sashimi, dozen eggs (clams), and uni if available. We got a medium size Sicilian sashimi which consisted of ahi tuna, yellow tails, scallops and salmons. The Sicilian sashimi was floating in a pool of olive oil, capers and red onions. The fish were so fresh. I have had fresh scallops before but their scallops were another level of freshness. They were no slimy at all and so sweet. My friend thought there was too much olive oil in the dish, but she enjoyed the sashimi. Additionally, bread was nothing special so I would recommend skipping it. The staff were very knowledge and fast. At the end, they used the napkin to calculate the cost lol. We would definitely come back here again for the raw seafoods. Don't get me wrong, the fish is great and super fresh. The vibes in this quaint place are immaculate and old school. However, with being in the city there are so many places with equally fresh fish that won't make you wait over an hour to be sat. We have had swan oyster depot circled as a spot to try for a while. Finally got the chance to see if the hype is real. We ordered the following: dozen oysters (super fresh, the sides sauces they have for the oysters hit), crudo (star of the show, super fresh and simple), crab back (disappointing with this dish, expected a lot of flavor and it underwhelmed in that department), shrimp cocktail (hard to mess this up, fresh shrimp), and clam chowder with bread (watery clam chowder, but the bread is good). It's a throwback joint, cash only and you see what you get. The seafood is fresh, but in terms of seasoning that department could be better. Staff are cool, they educate you on the seafood and provide suggestions. There can be line so try to come early before opening if you want to get sat quickly. Is it worth the hype that's for you to determine, in our opinion it's a good one and done. Went on a Saturday around 8:45am and there was just a short wait! Line started to become long after 9am, so come before then if you dont want to wait. Parking is also really easy before 9am. Food was delicious and love the old school diner vibes, where you can see the food cooked right in front of you. We got the crab back, but was surprised that it came cold instead of warm. They also required us to order half a crab in order to get the crab back... Crab was very fresh and sweet. It was easy to peel, a much better deal than the crab cocktail which is more expensive and gives you less crab. They give you free bread and butter, which was perfect to fill you up. Keep in mind they close at 230 and we got there around 12 and finally got seated around 2pm. So just expect a wait around that time of day. This was on a Monday. I hear going early in am is better. The menu is on the wall with all the prices, absolutely everything I tried was phenomenal. The Boston clam chowder was simple yet flavored well. More on the watery side than the creamy side if you like that but great nonetheless. The Crab salad surprisingly stole the show. Simple, yet every bite was mouth watering. The crab sauce they used was perfect for the dressing. I thought the lettuce was too much in quantity at first but it mixed perfectly. They put a good amount of crab meat and the salad was a lot more feeling than I would have thought. But if you like Crab, definitely try. The oysters were all from West coast and were very good. They don't have that Brine taste to them! At that point I was so full but wanted to try everything. The smoked salmon looked so good but I will try next time. Cash only. First, the line, unless you're there early, expect a long line. It is only counter seating inside, holding maybe 15 people? So that line outside takes a long time depending how long people stay inside for. We were there about two hours before they closed, got to the front of the line 30 minutes after closing and was told they were finally done seating people, which was fair. We were able to place an order to go. Ordered crab cocktail, sashimi, oysters and smoked salmon. Went back to the hotel and ate. The smoked salmon was probably the best item, great smoke on it, very flavorful, moist, just everything you want in a smoked fish. The oysters were ok, did not stand out one way or another. Just a typical oyster. The crab cocktail was ok as well, plenty of crab meat, which was great. The sashimi, though tasting very fresh, really had no flavor to any of the fish. Just underwhelming. Honestly, for the price you pay, you can literally go to the pier and get the same stuff for less, in my opinion. If you want smoked salmon, I'd say this is a nice place to do. Even though they open at 8am, there is a line out the door and a wait. We arrived around 9:15 on Saturday and waited almost 2 hours before getting a seat. I suggest either going on a weekday when the line dies down, or arriving very early as the line grows after 10am and you may miss out on getting inside! There's three standard rules at Swan that they try to make very clear, 1) No website 2) No reservations and 3) cash only. There is also a few other cool things about this hole-in-the-wall. First, you can grab a beer at the bar (left of the entryway) and drink it while waiting in line, you'll pay for it after you finish eating. Another tip is to ask your waiter, who also prepares your food, what items are not on the menu. The hand drawn menu is nice but not all inclusive. We got the medium Italian Sashimi which does not have a spot on the menu... This place is tiny, hence the wait, roughly about 14 bar stools to sit at. One thing I noticed was the bar-top does have under the counter hooks for purses or bags, and the back wall also has hooks for jackets and bags! Overall, the food is fantastic. Fresh fish and seafood, can't go wrong with whatever you choose if you're a true seafood lover. We enjoyed a dozen mixed oysters, sashimi, sourdough bread (which is free unless you take to-go) and a four alcoholic bevs for $130. There's no atm inside, or next to Swan, and Chase bank that was kitty corner to it closed, however there is an atm at the CVS directly across the street if you need to run in for more. I used to think this place had just a cult following from Anthony Bourdain or other travel guides, but after speaking to those waiting in line with us, it's apparent that the fresh seafood keeps people coming back. A true San Francisco classic. Swan Oyster Depot is one of those places that feels like stepping back in time in the best way possible. The seafood is incredibly fresh, and you can really taste the quality in every bite. We had the oysters, sashimi, and salad with combination sea food, and everything was simple but done right. The Dungeness crab was definitely the highlight-sweet, tender, and perfectly prepared. What really stood out to me, though, was the service. Sitting at the bar and watching everything being prepared right in front of you creates such a personal and authentic experience. Our server was exceptional, full attentive, knowledgeable, and made us feel genuinely welcomed. However, it wasn't my absolute favorite overall. The space is very small and can get quite loud, and depending on when you go, the wait can be long. It's also definitely more about tradition and quality than ambiance. We waited in line for about an hour and 15 minutes after arriving around 10:30 AM so definitely come early or be prepared for the wait! There some people who were drinking wine and beer while waiting in line which I thought was cool. It's a bit cramped inside but I honestly didn't mind - the food made it totally worth it. We ordered a sashimi plate (medium size), and OMG the scallops were my favorite. Next time I think we'll just get a full plate of those. We also ordered a dozen oysters which were super fresh. We also ordered the crab back... wow... my Asian self wished I had some rice to soak up the juices, but the bread they gave us did the trick. After 37 years in the city, I finally tried it! Waited an hour at 8:30 am on Saturday! It was pretty much worth the wait however I dont think ill do seafood for breakfast again. The BEST clam chowder I have ever had! Some delicious crab that was super fresh and clean, not very flavorful bc they let the sweet crab speak for it self with no seasoning. Plenty of lemons and sauces for dipping. This place is definitely about the seafood but a big part of it is the ambiance and staff who run it. HOLY Crabsanthemum! If you come here and order only one thing, it has to be the Crabsanthemum. I don't even know if this is technically on the listed menu, but do yourself a favor and get it, because it will be the best thing you eat here (if you like crab - if you don't like crab - don't get it). Now onto everything else. Most importantly, this spot is cash only. Luckily there's a Walgreens across the street with an ATM, so don't fret if you forgot your cash. We even saw one diner leave during his meal to go get some. We came a little after 10am on a Saturday, we thought we'd be early enough that we wouldn't have to wait much more than an hour, boy were we wrong, we waited 1 hour 45, but at least we were starving by the time it was our turn to dine. We ordered a medium sashimi plate, crab back, clam chowder, and three different kinds of oysters. And washed all that down with wine for me and beer for my boyfriend. My personal favorites were the Crabsanthemum (obvi) and the oysters, though of course I liked everything. Favorites from the sashimi were the scallop and the salmon, I'm normally team tuna, but the scallop and the salmon blew me away. I didn't love my first bite of sashimi because I found the olive oil to be a little overwhelming, but after sprinkling some salt on, the dish felt much more balanced and I was really able to appreciate the fish. While the wait was absurdly long, the food was great and the dining experience was fun, so I'm glad we came. If you don't want to wait, they do to-go orders! This place is a San Francisco institution, around since 1912. Everyone knows its quirks: counter seating only (about 18 elbow-to-elbow stools of varying heights), no reservations, no website, CASH only, expect a wait. Serves super fresh seafood, mostly chilled. You come here to eat, not to relax and have a drink and a bite (they do serve wine and beer). It seems to also be a seafood market. I arrived before the 8 am opening time and was first in line, so I sat right in the middle in front of the ancient-looking wall-mounted menu where the prices are periodically changed. Note there are popular items like the Sicilian sashimi and crab-santhemum not on the menu--look at Instagram for more info. The servers are also doing other duties like prepwork, they seem randomly assigned to each party. All were quite friendly, although my server was perhaps less so and also was doing a lot of chores in the back. Working among them was Kevin Sancimino, whose family has run Swan since 1946. The counter is narrow, as all the condiments and fixings (oyster crackers, lemons, oil, vinegar, horseradish, mignonette, chili sauce etc) are laid out here.. I ordered the crab salad, crab back and clam chowder. The salad was simply chopped lettuce topped with a decent amount of crab, with Louie dressing on the side. The crab was great, the salad rather unadorned versus that at other places like Scoma's. The crab back was rich and unctuous with crab fat/innards in a briny broth that I topped with the mignonette to cut the richness. It's served chilled. Different, not to my taste. A big hunk of sourdough bread and butter came with the salad. The chowder was New England style but perhaps without cream. The broth tasted mostly of clam juices, very clean. Note if you use the restroom at the rear of the restaurant, you will perhaps see crabs being chilled on ice, plus large crab pots. My neighbor just surprised me with a Belated Birthday Brunch from the Oyster Depot on Polk. I've walked past this place many times never stopping because the line was always too long. This place is well worth the wait. I had crab, baby shrimp and jumbo prawns over lettuce with thousand island dressing on the side. It's super fresh and melts in my mouth. I love seafood, and I love Swan Oyster Depot. I was in town for a meeting, and one of my colleagues who lives in San Francisco took me there. I was honestly shocked by how fresh everything was, and from the first visit I could already see why this place has been such a San Francisco institution for so long. The whole place has an old-school charm to it, and even though it was busy, everything felt smooth and natural. We got there right when they opened, so there wasn't a line yet, but it was already packed inside. By the time we left, a long line had formed outside. The atmosphere, the freshness of the seafood, and the overall experience made it one of the most memorable meals I had in the city. It was so good I came back twice. read more

Arrived 11:20 on a Saturday and made it in 2:25 (they stop seating people at 2:30 - that day they continued till 2:40)...around 1:45 and once again 2:15 someone came out to say they will stop taking people in at 2:30 regardless how long you've been in the line before that which frustrated a lot of people who were behind us in the line and got them angry at the guy. Place is an OG in San Francisco but is far from sanitary (bear hands dealing with everything from holding broom, handling money - it's a cash only place - handling the shrimp, lettuce, crab pieces with their bear hands and at the same time pouring bear and spilling all over just to bring a piece of cloth to wipe it) if you like all that then you'll be ok, otherwise just be prepared. Then comes the food...anything in crab shell was finished (so only crab meat already taken out from the crab was available) - and the only said that after we sat down and started ordering. In addition we ordered dishes that didn't come as pictured and when asked we were told that they had run out of some of the ingredients. For instance a $50 large sashimi plate that comes with 4 types of fish..came and we started eating only mid way to realize there's no salmon - we asked and were told they ran out to they subbed it. Same with the oysters, we ordered a dozen of 4 types they brought the dozen of only 3 types (4 of each) and when asked they said they same thing they ran out to they substituted it...this time we knew in advance when the plate came so we asked that we don't want then the extra 3 pieces (guy serving for sure didn't like it but not sure what did he expect) Bill for us two was $225 including tax (exclude tip). Was excited to finally try Swan Oyster Depot and it didn't disappoint! We came by around 9am on a Sat morning to beat the line and were happy that we only waited ~10 min for 2 people. It is a counter only spot so it would be difficult to seat a large group. We shared a cup of clam chowder, sicilian sashimi platter, a variety of oysters and cherry stone clams: - Clam chowder: Nice and light with great seafood flavor. I'm not a fan of super thick chowders as they can be too heavy but I loved how strong the clam flavor was in this one and the soup was the perfect consistency. We also got complimentary sourdough bread and butter. - Mixed oysters: Half a dozen oysters, mostly west coast. These were great and we enjoyed tasting the different varieties. Loved topping with the strong horseradish they have on the side and a heavy squeeze of lemon. - Mixed sashimi platter: We got a medium platter of sashimi with scallop, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and local whitefish. The sashimi is sicilian-style dressed with a good amount of olive oil, lemon juice, and capers. The fish was all very fresh and we loved the scallop which was super buttery and clean. The sashimi is not on the large menu board but comes in S, M, or L. We shared the medium ($40) which was the perfect size for 2 people. After finishing the fish, we also ate the remaining olive oil/capers with the sourdough bread which was divine! - Cherry stone clams: Didn't order this originally but saw the clams and knew we had to try them. They're meatier and more dense than oysters but still really flavorful and more briney than the west coast oysters we had. I'd still prefer oysters but this was a good addition. Note: It's cash only and we had planned to go to the Chase across the street but be aware it's not open on weekends. There is a Bank of America a block away we were able to get cash from. read more

Highly recommend!! I highly recommend the oysters and the clam chowder. There was a long line even at 2pm but definitely wasn't as bad as I anticipated. The inside seating area is a bar area so the space isn't that big but it's cool getting to watch them prepare the food. read more

Yes, the line is long and the place small but... it's worth it. Piece of advice: once you get to cross the entrance, if you are still in line, order a beer so you can enjoy it while waiting. Food is super fresh, and tasty. The place is very unique. The bathroom in fact looks as if you were inside a fisherman's boat. There's nothing else like "Swam Oyster" in town. If you are into seafood, this is a must visit. read more
