I used to come here quite often when I lived in Vienna. The sushi and sashimi are very fresh. The miso soup and salad with peanut dressing are great starts to the meal. The restaurant has a cozy feel about it as there are not too many seats in an area that is longer than it is wide. Whenever I didn't order sushi I got the shrimp and vegetable tempura. The vegetables especially were delicious and the size of the broccoli, onion ring, yams, and green beans were exceptional. When I want crazy Godzilla, Dragon, Volcano rolls, this is where I go in the DC Metro Area. Sweet Ginger is located in a small strip mall in Vienna and looks kinda sketchy from the outside. However, when inside, the décor is nicely done. As for the food and service, everything had been spot on for the 3 meals I've had here. They have a very extensive menu, with lots of variety such as sashimi, sushi rolls, specialty rolls and soups. I would recommend their tempura and their specialty rolls. How have I not reviewed this place yet? Okay, so keep in mind that the menu spans Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, and ...? That's a pretty broad spread. So flying in the face of do-one-thing-do-it-well, I think they actually do a really good job. Walking in from the large open strip mall parking lot, you're immediately plunged into tremendous ambiance (read: dim lighting) with nice wooden furniture, and black-and-red decor. Perfect for a quiet dinner out. The wait staff is consistently helpful and attentive. Given a choice for Sushi, I typically don't come here. I find a couple of other other place in Vienna a bit better -- but when I'm eating with someone who doesn't dig raw fish, then this is the spot. Now, my wife tells me that everything she's ordered there has been too salty ... not a problem I'm likely to have since I'd order salt as a side dish if I could. This was also the first restaurant where I've tried the Chirashi -- what goes in here tends to change, but my first experience included scallop which I discovered is delicious. I've also been here for lunch and scarfed up a bento box. Really hits the spot. I've tried a few other dishes off her plate (pad thai, panang chicken, tempura, etc) and I've actually been pretty happy with the flavor. Perhaps my palate is not discriminating enough. So I am not a huge Sushi fan, but my girlfriend is and I really wanted to impress her by taking her to the best Sushi place around. This was also our first date. (albeit this was a few years ago and I was trying to impress her on Valentines Day) So I started going a lot of research via google and yelp and found that this place had some amazing reviews. Was kinda weary when I read that it was in a strip mall or that the owners weren't Japanese. So I made reservations here, Benihanas, and some place in Tysons. Sweet Ginger catered to my needs and gave me a reservation same day. This place really is a hidden GEM. I love this place and now I am actually really beginning to enjoy eating Sushi. Needless to say the date went really well and now her and I are engaged and set to get married. Sweet Ginger will always be a part of our relationship and we'll remember it for the rest of our lives. The food and service is perfect. I have never had a complaint once about them. Don't let the fact that it's in a strip mall bother you. Or that its in a very random location in VA. I had heard a lot about this place but wasn't that impressed overall. Sushi Rice was cold, hard and chewy. Volcano roll had so much sauce on it that it all fell apart. Shrimp tempura roll wasn't even warm so probably not fresh fried. I don't like smoked salmon in sushi but that's how they do their philly rolls here. Seemingly small place, kind of ghetto on the outside. I don't think i'll be making the hike back here. On top of being seated at a small 2-person table they tried to get 2 long sushi trays and sushi boat on it, eh. 5 rolls was just over $40 before tip.. Firstly, this is a ***Pan-Asian*** restaurant with dishes from all over Asia, so if you're a purist, then you'll probably have trouble with it. If you can get past the pan-Asian theme, you'll find that the food is tasty and good. The first time that I came to this place a few years back, I knew from the decor that it was Thai-owned. If anything, I'd qualify the place as Japanese-Thai, though, as mentioned, they have dishes from all over Asia. The Sushi is tasty and well-presented. If anything, they do rely on a lot of cream sauces and Tobiko (The little red fish eggs). This fact doesn't make their sushi rolls any less tasty. They're all quite good. The Thai food will fill you up very nicely as well. All the usual Thai flavors such as lemongrass or chili are used. I haven't been very lucky with the other Asian dishes such as Chinese or Malaysian. Some are good, but I can get better at other local restaurants. The decor is essentially Asian black lacquer. The restaurant has a neighborhood feel since it isn't that big, but I think that it still makes a good place for a date or business luncheon in Vienna, VA. I like this place. It looks like a hole in the wall, but the inside is nice enough. It gets packed for lunch and dinner, so make a reservation. Service is decent. I only go for the sushi. It's pretty good. Not the best, but tasty enough with a few semi-out-of-the-ordinary rolls. I like this place best for lunch. Prices are reasonable too. tl;dr: yummy fresh sushi, good service, decent prices, nice atmosphere, glad we shlepped beyond our usual radius to try it out. We stumbled across it while actually looking to see if Sushi Yama, one of our favorites when we lived in Vienna (we're now in Fairfax), was still around. The good reviews on Yelp convinced us to give it a try. Upon approach, the sign above it on the strip mall looked quite weathered, which we took as a bad sign (no pun intended). BBQ Country, a couple doors down, was our immediate backup plan... but everything actually *in* the restaurant looked to be in excellent condition. We were seated immediately, despite it being about 6:30 on a Friday evening. The menu was extensive, but we narrowed it down quickly because we were after sushi. The waitress was polite, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the dishes (at least the sushi combos; we didn't ask about anything else). We each had the Sushi Mori A. (I would guess that Mori is short for moriawase, which I think is Japanese for "assortment". Or maybe it's just a shorter standard form.) Our initial thought was the Combo for 2, but that added up to a colossal 36 pieces -- and we usually have trouble finishing more than about 26 or so. The Mori A includes eight pieces of assorted normal (nigiri) sushi, plus six pieces of California roll. It was all very good and fresh-tasting, and arrived very promptly after we had finished the salad and miso soup that came with it. Wife enjoyed a Pinot Grigio with it, while I stuck with water since I was driving. All in all, an excellent choice. We'll have to try the rest of the menu eventually. read more

I really like this restaurant and order take out relatively frequently and have been doing this for years. However, I would very much like the restaurant to re-examine their take out packaging as they use a ton of non-recyclable materials and for items like Sushi could easily find alternatives. I have grown increasingly uncomfortable with this -- and the lack of change over the years -- and really feel they need to do their part to move away from styrofoam, and single-use and non-recyclable plastic. read more

We arrived at noon on a weekday which is peak eating time. Most tables were occupied, but there were still a few open tables so we were seated right away. This isn't a massive spot so keep that in mind when you bring groups larger than eight. Service was good. Everyone's food looked amazing. Some ordered bento boxes. I've been here a few times, and I've left satisfied every time. My favorite roll is the Crazy Roll, (found on their "special rolls") and I also enjoy the tuna tataki appetizer. Their sashimi is always fresh and the presentations for all of their dishes are nice. So, I returned to Sweet Ginger after my first visit 3 years ago against my better judgement. My friend wanted to try the restaurant after having tried it years ago. It was his first sushi experience. As a result, he did not like sushi. After bringing him to several other GOOD sushi places, he wanted to try Sweet Ginger again...thinking that he may like it. When we first walked in, the first thing I smelled was a donut-like aroma. My stomach turned as I remembered the sickly-sweet flavors I experienced during my first visit. Why would a sushi/pan-asian place smell like donuts?!? Anyways, we ordered 3 rolls (Pacific Roll, Rainbow Roll, and Spicy Tuna) and a bento box with nigiri pieces and chicken teriyaki. Bento Box: Chicken teriyaki and steam rice was good. The fried tofu and potstickers were cold! The nigiri pieces had way too much rice. The rice was stone-cold, way too sticky and soggy. It tasted and looked like they used too much water to cook the rice and stuck it in the fridge. The fish itself was thinly cut and fishy tasting. Not very fresh. Rolls: Way too much cream sauce and roe all over the rolls. Too much rice compared to fish and other ingredients. The rolls were also stone-cold. It seemed like they had prepared the rolls ahead of time and stuck it in the fridge until they served us or something. Everything had an artificial sweet flavor to it. I just found myself looking at the menu forever. But they have a good mix of Asian foods going on. I love their unique sushi. If you're a fan of spicy, get the "Crazy Roll." The Katsu is alright. Wasn't too impressed with the fried banana desert. The restaurant itself is pretty well laid out but at night, just a little too dim. But I loving having dinner here with good friends - the staff is great with big groups and just friendly in general. I've been here multiple times since my last review and have always left happy. No matter what I've ordered I have thoroughly enjoyed each dish. I think the last time I was here I split some tempura with a friend, which was excellently crunchy on the outside with hot and delicious filling. The pad thai has grown on me here, I just like the balance of salty and sweet, which so many other restaurants fail to balance. This place is good if you are craving specialty rolls with a LOT of sauce. It is a bit on the heavier side with regards to sushi but is comforting on a cold winter night. The rolls are huge and unique. My favorite 'comfort roll' is the Japanese Bagel roll. Bakes cream cheesey goodness with eel. I also recommend the Pacific Roll if you like spicy rolls. They offer a variety of Vietnamese, Korean, and Thai items on their menu as well. We like to come here for Family dinners because my youngest sister refuses to eat sushi (She is 8) so she gets General Tso's chicken. I wouldn't come here if I was not craving their sushi though because the items are pricey. (i.e. I will never pay more than 7 bucks for a bowl of Pho) It gets pretty busy on weekends but for the most part, we can usually just show up and get seated right away with our group of 6. This was certainly an odd experience and ultimately disappointing. We started off the meal with Thai iced teas which tasted like syrup! I swear I got the strangest sugar high from it. I could barely taste the tea! I asked the server if she could add more tea but it seems they sweeten the batch so she brought out more milk which didn't really help. No... Just no. Maybe it was my fault for coming to get sushi at Reston, Virginia. Not sure.. but the raw fish here was no bueno... ESPECIALLY the toro! Don't get ripped off and pay for this. $13 for 2 slices, and it was not edible. I've had good fatty toro before and this didn't even look remotely like toro -- it was red and you couldn't see marbled fat. It must be old or something because when I bit into it, it wouldn't even break apart. Sashimi is supposed to melt in your mouth and this was far from that. We did also get the miso soup, a fried shrimp app, and tempura, which were fine, but those are kind of difficult to screw up. Just don't come here for sashimi. read more

When I first started going here I was OBSESSED with the spicy crunchy lobster roll. After going so many times I realized all their "anything spicy" rolls all taste the same. I went 2 nights ago the lobster in the lobster roll was realllly chewy. Unpleasant almost. Shumai and aged dashi tofu is delicious. Yaki soba is also good. The wifey and I like this place and I would have given this 4 stars had they not raised the price of the dinner bento box I order by $1. I still will continue to order from here though. We go for the rolls, with the spicy mayo sauce which is soooo darn yummy. I don't need the wasabi, I don't need the soy sauce, just give me the spicy mayo please. I haven't tried anything else really on their menu, so I can't vouch for the other things, but I can say the spicy salmon, spicy tuna and the alaskan rolls are super yummy. Sweet Ginger has been our standby since we discovered it about a year ago. There is definitely something for everyone, and it's all well-executed. My bf doesn't eat fish so I don't get sushi as often as I'd like. Other "Asian fusion" places (see Cafe Asia) will offer a large variety of dishes so I can get sushi and he can get teriyaki or noodles, but their sushi is usually tasteless and lackluster. Sweet Ginger's sushi is outstanding, as are most of their other dishes. The one quirky thing is that entrees come with a side of mashed potatoes... first time I've seen potatoes in an Asian restaurant. It's so nice to have a fun, good, independently-owned restaurant in the suburbia of Vienna. Makes us feel a little like we're back on the left coast. read more

I really liked the decor and its easy to miss this place...there are so many restaurants and strips of stores etc..... I actually did not try much sushi, but my friends did I ordered some Asian spice chicken, it was 10$ small intimate, set up, with the chef's cooking at the bar red ceiling and hanging red lights, creates a cool, ambience pretty cosy place, not large and I like the large Japanese photos and framed art the food was delicately made and fresh, and also had some peanut salad and miso soup sampled Sushi....the servings were large and expect to pay about 20-30 per person for Sushi, my friend says its the best Sushi in Fairfax, he might know after sampling lots of it in the DC/VA area worth a try and the service was polite and professional read more

I think my fave of the three was the crunchy tuna. I ordered some hot tea because tonight was pretty chilly, but unfortunately I was brought room temperature tea that my fiancé joked and said tasted like something that could have been scooped out of a fish tank. Because of this, I had to give 4 stars. The atmosphere was nice, but the seating was tightly packed together. I guess the lack of space is something we have to get used to now that we are in the city.
