This is Minnesota, not one of your western border states. We don't have great Mexican food, it doesn't really go with the weather either. So when a new place serving Tacos opens up, you wake up and pay attention. Taberna Tacos opened up recently in Uptown, with indoor free parking, a patio, ping-pong and pool tables and a general well lit, modern, sports bar vibe. The menu is decent with both traditional options like carnitas, fried fish, etc. as well as fusion options like the Bahn mi taco, yellow chicken curry taco, cauliflower and potato and much more. There is a whole lot of apps with corn roasted on the cob ruling the roost. We tried the Mexican fries and the Taberna Nachos. Everything fried was freshly so, in good non-smelly oil. The flavor however was tailored to midwestern sensibilities with a much-needed kick and a bite missing. The bottled hot sauce placed on every table would rush to the rescue. The Bahn Mi taco was wet, with the traditional cilantro and carrots and radishes but again missing the supporting jalapeno. The "flower-power" taco show-cases the cauliflower in all its glory with bits of potato and guac and pickled onions. While hearty, this veg option again flounders short of any spice on its own without the assistance of the on-table sauce. Finally, the Thai curry chicken taco was the only one with a noticeable distinctive taste of its own, with the hint of Thai chili coming through in between bites of tomato and onion. There was however no turmeric in this particular curry. The tortillas are said to be corn, however, they lack the thickness, color and rough texture which one generally associates with them. The food is fresh, it has good ingredients and is also priced appropriately, but requires heat and seasoning which will reaffirm its Mexican identity. They also do cocktails here, which are very good if a tad pricey for the amount of actual liquor they offer. The service was very polite and courteous, with the server even bringing around free dessert to celebrate a birthday on our table. There were however long gaps between the order, the food, the drinks, and the check. This we attributed to the bambiesque nature of the establishment, i.e still finding its feet. All in all this place shows a lot of promise, with large spaces to bring groups to. A bit more flavor, better service management, and this place could be real nice. read more

Carnitas tacos: just bland braised pork. No crispy bits. Onions looked as if they were cut two days ago. Al Pastor tacos: where was the pineapple? Dry and greasy. Can that even happen? ***Queer Review!*** Wow, we've been waiting for this place to open and it finally has! We live in walking distance and strolled over on Thursday evening to check it out. We couldn't be more pleased. The space itself is small but has lots of seating and an open layout. There's a patio which is nice, minus having to watch the traffic go by (or maybe you're the type that enjoys making the drivers jealous while showing off your margaritas). All of the staff we interacted with were professional and nice; shout out to Matt the bartender! Food: We ordered the chicken nachos which were pretty tasty. Their chips are homemade. I only wish the serving size was larger. We also ordered a side of the red salsa and it was surprisingly on the sweet side. Once inside and eventually at the bar, we got 3 free carnitas tacos! Well, thank ya! They came with good amount of meat and hit the taco spot. Drinks: We tried the Black Diamond margaritas. They were pretty standard and not too sweet so I enjoyed it. The rim has black lava salt so you can feel dark/mysterious/demonic while sipping away. Always a plus. We also lucked out that it was a Thursday because guess what? Tequila Thursdays. They have discounted tequila and $2 tequila shots. I mean, we didn't have to work the next day so all we can say is we definitely had a good time! The food is mediocre. The price/cost $$ of the food is f&%@ing absurd and ridiculously too high. They charge $3.00 for a 5 inch corn tortilla taco with approximately 3 ounces of meat. I laughed out loud when the server brought the taco to my table. Definitely NOT worth the $$$. read more

Sat on the patio last night. We saw that they fully wiped down the tables and chairs before we sat down. Staff was kind and attentive. We started with the chips and salsa, which was standard but good! We ordered six tacos. Each taco was stuffed with delicious ingredients! I've been admiring Taberna on my way home from work daily since I moved to West Calhoun! The patio looks so cute and inviting. When we finally made it to Saturday date night it did not disappoint. The prickly pear margarita was sweet and flavorful. Just what the doctor ordered after a long week. The Bde Mez Cal marg has a Smokey flavor and was the perfect manly marg. Tacos for two included ANY 6 tacos of your choice, 2 elotes, rice, beans and tres leches cake for dessert. The entire meal was bursting with flavor and the perfect amount of spice. My daughter likes this place, so I thought we'd give it a try. Atmosphere was fine. Inside parking was really nice. Our waitress was totally uninterested in doing a good job. Bar service, from our waitress, unbelievably slow. The food comes out lightning fast after you order. The tacos were fine. I only really liked the chorizo sausage one. That was really good. The first time I went to Taberna was a week after they opened. The service was a little slow. We were sitting for over 5 minutes before anyone got our drink order, even though we were one of the only tables. The food and drinks made up for that by far. Nachos were brought out to our table on the house, and they were some of the best I've ever had. The tacos are equally delicious and low in cost. I've ate here several times with my girlfriend on days where its nearly empty and each time was delicious and left us extremely satisfied! We just brought our friend on a busier Saturday night however, and the difference was night and day from before. Outdoor seating and good food. Lower stars since they ask if you want salsa and sour cream like it goes with your tacos, then you see $6.50 on the bill extra for these. I have been here twice since Taberna opened a few weeks ago, one time being opening night. Opening night had some struggles, but that was to be expected. We only ordered a few tacos opening night, as we just wanted to check the place out. Out of the 6 tacos we tried, all were delicious! I returned last night for taco Tuesday to try some other tacos out. All of the traditional tacos were $2, the specialty ones were full price. There was a selection of $2 beers that were a great deal. (Tuesday deals are 3pm-close). We had chips and salsa, 4 different tacos, and the Churro sundae -- everything was delicious! The traditional tacos are simple but very well flavored. My one disappointment Tuesday was ordering a virgin margarita and being charged for the price of a regular margarita ($10). I should have asked before ordering, but it seems basic to be able to offer non-alcoholic options at an appropriate price. I ordered three different ones, they were all good, though none were the ones I ordered, I don't think? Due to not fault of the server everything was slow, which made this workday meal difficult. Fun little taco joint nestled in Uptown. We ordered chips, guac, and the house red salsa. Both were good, but nothing outstanding. I'd say if you're deciding between one or the other, get the guac. The tacos were also good, but not great. My fiancé, who rarely makes comments on the seasoning of his food, had said something just seemed a little off--like it was lacking something. We tried a handful of tacos between the two of us...al pastor, carne asada, southwestern, and the carnitas. Now....onto the part of this review that actually matters....the margaritas!! We both tried the "taberna" margarita and both really enjoyed it. Not too sweet or syrupy. Service was great as well. Taberna has a cute patio out front, and I could definitely see us stopping in for a few margaritas and an appetizer after spending time at the lake in the summer. Not sure if we'd come back for dinner, as there are other places in the area we enjoy more. I love that this place is so close to my abode! Open and fun atmosphere. Super friendly staff, the bar is great, lots of spots to belly-up. The tacos are ok. The fish taco is amazing, flavorful and juicy. I also tried the Al Pastor, Carnitas and Chorizo tacos which were just ok, lacking robust flavor or moisture. The chips are homemade and delicious, a little more salt or seasoning, but good. Their medium salsa verde is by far the best salsa, good heat and flavor. I had the lunch special, and the food was absolutely AMAZING! I had the chorizo and New England tacos with beans and elote. Never had elote, but Taberna's is so delicious! My waitress was friendly and helpful, answering all my questions. I didn't listen to the music but don't want a mariachi band serenading me. City restaurant with some of the best food in Minneapolis! The food was very good. Although, my friend was double charged and when she told the server(Rene S), he tried to convince her it was right. We later read all the receipts and realized he did charge her extra. She decided to call and when he got on the phone with her, he was being super disrespectful. Had the tacos appetizer and then burger & fries happy hour combo. Food was good. Wished they had provided cutlery/ a fork for the fries. Beer and margarita were good though the margarita was strong. Service was excellent though not so on two previous occasions hence the 3 stars. Clean. We arrived to Taberna with great anticipation. We walked and feel in love with decor, the games available, and casual atmosphere are right in line with us. I was a bit surprised that weekend dinner was a la cart and the prices were, in our opinion, high for the amount of food served. We were also disappointed that on this not-so-busy Saturday evening our waiter seemed more interested in his conversation with the other staff than serving our table. Two of us ordered blended margaritas, they both came to the table on the rocks. And our dessert was not ordered as we expected but I think was just a simple misunderstanding. All in all, we paid for a dinner and left unsatisfied (unusual for Mexican food, for us)). My hope with this review is that the staff will be challenged to grow to meet the challenge. I did read the review before I came here. I dismissed them all. How tough is it to make good street tacos? Well. It's not so easy. The tacos here will not kill you. But are they good? Meh. I think the tacos suffer from not enough turnover and are stale. The AL PASTOR were dry and flavorless. The CARNE ASSADA were dry, sinewy, and flavorless. I spit out some sinewy chunks. An absolutely awesome spot for Taco Tuesday. Great beer and taco specials. Chicken, beef, pork, and SHRIMP! Are all so great! The shrimp tacos were amazingly flavorful, the chicken had a great char to it, and the beef and pork were phenomenal. The chips were absolutely perfect, not greasy but super crunchy. Cultural appropriation gone bad! Wanted to try this place because it's near where we live. Wouldn't go there again! The tacos were quite tasteless, the rice had uncooked kernels in it, and the beans were sad story... The service totally sucked! I had to ask 3 times until I got my refill and box to go; I only waited 1/2 hour for that. If you appreciate good Mexican food, don't go to Taberna. I'm really disappointed with this place, we went at a time where there was 3 people in the restaurant I kid you not, and when we get the food, it's pretty cold... not only that, the corn tortilla wasn't fully cooked, honestly I don't even think it was cooked. The meat (besides the AL Pastor) was absolutely flavorless. I'm a taco connoisseur and I rarely eat a bad taco but these are the farthest thing from an authentic taco that I've ever eaten (maybe that was the goal). The elote didn't even have mayo... if it did it tasted more like hot Sauce than mayo. The "Mexican" rice is brown rice... just because you put cilantro on something, doesn't make it "Mexican." The beans were probably the only thing that tasted good and even than they were super watery. The cake tasted like soap and sugar. I completely forgot we got "Mexican fries" which doesn't come with meat???? But sauce, jalapeños and cotija... the fries looked and tasted like they ran to McDonald's for a bulk order of fries... our waiter was super nice tho and he deserves a good tip but I wish that $60 all went to him and not the food. Agree with the reviews commenting on the service. I came in for dinner on Sunday. There was no hostess in sight for some time. We were seated on the patio near the wall. About 10 minutes after us a party of 4 was seated near by, and 5 minutes later a party of 2 near the wall as well. Both parties had a server arrive within 5 minutes of being seated. After more than 20 minutes of waiting, I went inside to inquire about our server. Again, no hostess and I had to wait a bit. When the hostess arrived, I explained to her the problem. She asked what table number we were seated at. I was rather confused by this question, as the table number is not something restaurant patrons are usually privy to. They had at least 3-4 servers for the patio, who didn't seem overworked, so it is a little unclear why the service is poor. Our food arrived and was just okay. We had nachos and a few tacos. The margaritas were fine but nothing spectacular. Upon leaving, again no hostess at the front. They definitely have work to do with regard to communication and service. read more

My wife and I live in the area and had heard of Taberna and went on opening night. It was very busy and a very long line out the door. The staff tried their best to keep up when every guest was seated at once and they just got overloaded so it took a while for the food but it was well worth the wait. The tacos were absolutely amazing and at $3 to $4 a taco you can't beat that price. I especially like the Bon Mi specialty taco. I have a lot of friends who have open restaurants and personally opened a few myself and there's always going to be kinks that need to be ironed out in the beginning. The fact that the line was way out the door opening night was a really good sign and I think this place is going to be the new hot spot for Calhoun. read more

Korean bbq pork taco's... Amazing! I've been here a few times and have had a few different things but the shrimp tacos and Korean bbq pork tacos are so so good! Def stop in! Also call to make reservations bc open table reservations aren't real even tho you made them, they will not be honored. That's disappointing. read more
