Ok...let's start with, I'm a Texan...so the whole "fish" taco thing escapes me. Taco Surf was 'good' but not great. I got the two tacos w/ rice and refried bean meal. It was nothing out of the "run of the mill" for a chain restaurant... The salsa was VERY heavy on the onions with an overkill on heat. Now I know what you're thinking..."wimp"...but when the heat overwhelms the combination of all other flavors, it destroys salsa's purpose...which is enhancement not domination. For my entree I got one pork and one grilled fish taco. I didn't mind the pork, but the fish taco was rather bland. The rice and beans were run of the mill. Oh, one point...I saw one of the waiters refill a salsa bowl with a dipper from the salsa pot and then put the ladle back into the salsa pot. Now you may be thinking..."no big deal", but that ladle has now touched the bowl which the people who used it probably double dipped if they were a family. Just an FYI All in all, the ambience was nice (near the beach) and the waitstaff friendly, but as for the food...I would say it's good, but not exceptional. Tasty culinary adventures y'all read more

Today was the second time i tried to eat at this dirty hole in the wall..last time and right now again i am vomiting for hours! That place just has a feel of grime and dirt but i thought i would give it a second try since it is right across the street from the pier in seal beach...what a mistake! After walking around in the baking sun on valentine's day, I wanted to eat something light. Both my bf and I were seeing visions of fish tacos dancing in our heads. We headed to Seal Beach for some Taco Surf tacos. We didn't anticipate the horrific parking situation. Obviously at 80/90 degree weather, everyone would want to seek solace at the beach. After about 20 minutes of circling we were starving. We only had a bagel each that day. Since it was also chinese new year, I thought it was fitting that it was somewhat vegetarian and the fish can stand for "nian nian you yu", which means good luck year by year. So it worked out. We ordered the three taco entree - two baja taco and one grilled taco. The baja tacos of course tasted awesome. The tacos were huge and filled to the brim. I was told they used to double-layer the tortillas too. Also,the price went up almost double since the last time the bf worked in the area. nevertheless, it was good and loved the free refills of root beer. They also give complimentary chips and salsa with refills as well. That hit the spot. read more

Stopped for a bite and a beer after kite boarding lessons with some friends. I ordered a Pacifico on draft and the damn thing came to me warm. What a bummer - but hey, I drank it fast and chalked it up to the possibility the glass just came out of the dishwasher and I was the unlucky one who got it when it was still warm. So when the waitress came back to take our order I ordered another Pacifico. Only this time in a bottle and told her my draft beer was warm. No response. She just took my order. I ordered a shrimp taco and a fish taco. I asked the waitress if if came with tomatoes and she said "just pico de gallo." I asked her to hold the pico. The shrimp taco had barely any shrimp on it. It had huge slices of tomato on it. I hate tomato. Gross. The fish taco left a lot to be desired. I mean, how hard is it to make a fish taco? Oh and guess what... the friggen Pacifico in the bottle was warm too. Ugh. I passed my bottle around to the table and my pals all confirmed I was not nuts and that yep - I got another warm beer again. Look - I'm not a picky diner. Most of the reviews I've done on here are positive but this kinda sucked. Next time I'm in Seal Beach I will look for another place to grab a beer and some food. Great casual lunch spot for lunch with the family. Food was good, but the service was great. Friendly, attentive and not intrusive even though it was fairly busy with other groups waiting. I had the Baja Fish burrito and my wife had one of their signature salads. We were both happy with our choices. My kids had the cheese quesadillas and also the mahi mahi with mango salsa. I'm so disappointed!!! This place looks awesome...It is an old shack on the side of the road with tacky decor and fantastic music...My partner and I thought this was perfect to be our new favorite diggs since we recently moved here...but sadly, we decided that one trip was enough. First off, parking was awful...awful. period. You can try to park by the beach in neighborhood parking, but don't count on it. Be patient on weekends. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted by loud, booming music-which from the outside was appealing, but inside, you couldn't hear anything and needed to scream for conversation... There were lots of drunk old ladies dancing which was very entertaining until they would bump into you and spill their drinks all over. Okay, so we walk in and wait. We were told 20 minutes...20 minutes pass...30 minutes pass....40 minutes pass...and we get up to leave, only to be caught on our way out the door with an available table. We sit down...and wait...and wait...and wait...someone brought chips, good....they're warm, nice...salsa is canned....and wait...and wait... And finally after not having a server for another 15 minutes the manager comes over to take our order.... He was nice, but overworked... Food was, eh. Not the worst food, but nothing to write home about either. Margaritas- NO no no! I think they are from those pre-made containers...very little alcohol...very little taste... I think that people come here for the atmosphere. The food is nothing special and service is not good. The atmosphere however is great for younger adults/couples, bumpkins, or groups of friends who feel like jamming some place and getting smashed. I don't like Taco Surf's food. It doesn't taste good - the beans, the rice - none of it really tastes Mexican. It's wierd though, the *idea* of going to Taco Surf always seems like a good one. Inevitably, all hopes are dashed and you get mediocre food. Part of the draw is the atmosphere - it's got a great cantina vibe and I like that. The service is good. The food takes about 50% too long to arrive, but that's not a huge deal. It's just...gah! The food! It's so bad! I've tried a bunch of stuff on the menu, and you're best bet are certainly the tacos. The burritos are uniformly bad: the veggies are limp, the rice tasteless, the beans too healthy. I want mexican rice and refried beans, dammit! I got the chimichunga once and it was just a fried bad burrito - but it wasn't fried enough, and the tortilla was oily and soggy. If you're in the area and need ok mexican food, your best bet is NEITHER Taco Surf or El Burrito Jr (although El Burrito will do if you're desperate) - but rather Charo Chicken on Main St. near PCH. This place is amazing!! We had just finished a fun morning surfing with M&M Surf School, and the kids were starving!! I wanted a sit-down restaurant, and the name seemed to fit the theme for the day, so we stopped in for dinner. The staff was super attentive, and helped us to find a seat right away. Then there was the food...the amazing food. I ordered two tacos (one of their 'famous fish tacos' and one of their shrimp tacos). The shrimp taco was amazeballs - get it!! I am a sucker for friend fish tacos so I ordered the three for $7. These are delicious with giant dallops of guacamole even. Unfortunately there was little crema or pico de' gallo on my taco which left it lonely. The salsa that comes with the chips is pretty darn boring but did the trick. We ordered the mango salsa and I warn; DO NOT ORDER IT! It's so sweet and sticky that it tastes like a fruit compote' vs. a sweet spicy kick that we were all expecting. This rather cramped restaurant has the local feel that Rubios wishes it could provide. It's dark and there's all sorts of excessive decor one would see in _____ Mexico. I've been there twice now and both times I have been quite satisfied with their tacos. My first trip here I ordered the two taco meal which came with rice and beans. The first thing I noticed on both the fish and carne asade tacos were guacamole, instant points right there! I'm easily impressed I guess, but seeing the guac indicates that this place is not about cutting corners. The fish was lightly fried, just barely crispy and very tender within. The cabbage was moist and crisp, not dehydrated and stringy (see: Rubios) Additional points for using real pico de gallo as apposed to that watery shit for "salsa" (see again: Rubios) Though I must point out that Taco Surf's salsa is a bit heavy on the onion. Oh well, I'll just have to double up on the chips. The carne asada taco was stuffed with meat and the same above mentioned condiments, it was quite tasty. My second trip was take out, no thanks to degenerates who show up at the counter 15 minutes before lunch and force me to take a shorter lunch to accommodate their sorry asses all for the sake of public service... sure. Really I should have brought the hammer down and told them to scram in true DMV fashion, but I digress. So I ordered take out and enjoyed the brief walk down main street and returned to the office where my food was just as satisfying despite the long delay in consumption. In conclusion, I am hooked on this place like a heroin addict on methadone, er or simply heroin. Try it out, sure it costs a bit more than Wahoos or Rubios but you're getting better quality and tasting food while supporting small business. This is a nice Taco Surf location near the beach. The service was good and the food was great too. My only complaint is that the tables are smooshed close to each other.
