My second experience at Taka was not as good as the first unfortunately. The salmon was delicious, the rainbow roll was standard. The crispy tuna was a big disappointment though. It just wasn't tasty at all, somehow it lacked flavor but the flavor it had was just not good. The pickles were yummy. I will come back but probably for the omakase. While dining at Big B's next door, I noticed the happy hour menu posted on the door at Taka Sushi. It was at that moment I knew I needed to come back and check it out. We'd brought the pup so we needed to sit outdoors... and of course it was raining... but luckily the outdoor seating was covered. Happy hour consisted of half off beers, discounted select glasses of wine, hot sakes & Taka vodka seltzer. $5 California and spicy tuna rolls and $4-5 salmon/tuna/hamachi nigiri. And honestly that's all I need to sustain myself LOL. We ended up gorging on nigiri and rolls - but to fill up further, we ordered off the regular dinner menu. The okonomiyaki hit the spot and the sashimi sampler was chef's kiss! The fish quality seemed lower in the happy hour dishes than the sashimi sampler, which of course, makes sense. I will have to come back again for a full dining experience to get a better picture of it all! read more

I can name several sushi spots in the area whom are amazingly better; I only put an order in the location due to work. Two of the five sushi rolls had rather dry rice (not fresh), while the others were either too under seasoned or overly seasoned. The eel and spider rolls were such a disappointment; I feel silly for even trying this place. Never again will I make that mistake. I even called the restaurant back and told them the gratuity was ridiculously high for a to-go order, which was a simple order- nothing extra. I eat here every week. Usually on Wednesday. This time it was a drizzly Tuesday and it was packed inside because outside was closed. My company is sometimes a close friend, sometimes my teenage, sometimes a combination. Our orders were teriyaki (chicken and broccoli), udon, some rolls, some more rolls and wine and some more wine. If you bring your own wine, it's a $20 corkage but the wine list and in restaurant selection is so good and well priced, you don't need to. Loves this restaurant, definitely will be returning! It's a little bit on the expensive side I'd say, but nothing too surprising for a sushi restaurant. I highly recommend ordering their tofu, the outside skin is so crispy, but the tofu is so soft and silky! Their sushi was amazing. I had several of their rolls, I'm not even sure what exactly I had because I just asked for the fresh catch of the day and they tasted delicious! The fish that I ordered was just okay, I wouldn't get it again. I found it a little dry and it took them more than 30 minutes to make. The udon was a great end to the meal! The udon was cooked perfectly, super chewy, and the soup was nice and light. I think my favorite part of the restaurant is how friendly the staff was! They were always smiling and extremely polite. I also think it's super cool and unique that their restaurant doubles as a wine shop! I went here with the family. They got Sushi, and a chicken rice bowl, whereas I got the Taka Ramen. The service was slow, but, it was packed, so I understood. The ambiance was pretty good! I liked it. Personally, my ramen was very.. fishy. I'm not sure of the flavour, but it tasted wrong. I felt sick after it. The Rainbow roll sushi, Diet Coke sushi, and the eel were all delicious (I only tried the rainbow, as I am not a huge sea food fan.) Most will not be getting ramen, and instead will be getting the name sake: Sushi. And for that, it was actually really good. As a non sushi enjoyer, I quite liked what I had. It was very good! Went here as part of a Japanese American Society of Georgia lunch event (they usually are not open for lunch) The owner, Taka (who is actually Japanese), is trying to do a lot with sustainability. Not using plastic to go boxes, metal straws, composting at his own house. They put out a buffet for us which included a lot of Japanese winter staples like oden. They also had a delicious Japanese style curry which was dark with umami flavors, but also slightly sweet. The restaurant is totally clean, so are the bathrooms, and the service was quite nice. Best sushi restaurant i've ever been to! Always a pleasure to visit! I visited for a birthday dinner in the family, and we an amazing experience. Our waitress was so kind , and they took a lot of COVID precarious. They do a temperature check, all staff wear masks, and they have a very nice socially-distanced patio, where we sat. All of the food was amazing, especially the sushi of courses. We had the Popcorn Okra and Spring Rolls as an appetizer. The egg rolls were very tasty and had a nice texture. The okra was very unique and tasty. For sushi, we had Lobster Roll, California Roll, Super Crunch Roll, and Spicy Crab Roll. All were amazing. The spicy crab roll definitely was spicy! My favorite of these 4 was the Super Crunch Roll! it was to tasty that we ordered a second order of it. The Lobster Roll also has a nice taste and texture. Taka is a good spot for sushi, Teriyaki etc but I'm not convinced it's the best I've ever had. I made a reservation on open table which I highly recommend as this place gets packed! Servers are very polite and friendly, but very busy and preoccupied. Prices are reasonable for non sushi items. Chicken teriyaki bowl was $8 I believe salmon was $12. Went to this sushi spot based on a recommendation and it is within walking distance from my apartment. I was hoping to find a local neighborhood sushi place that had reliably good rolls, but it was underwhelming. We say inside and the ambience was nice enough. The selection of rolls was uninspiring and I didnt see anything on the menu that was a unique roll to the restaurant like some places have specialty rolls that they create and then you want to go there for that special roll that no one has...in any case, the offering was basic but most importantly, the rolls were just ok. Nothing to want to really go back for other than it being convenient. Know that I am not saying the place had anything bad, it is just there are so many other sushi options that I will keep trying other places rather than go back here. First sushi spot in GA I've been to. It's a solid 3 star experience. I will say I have had better sushi, however, it was still really and curbed my sushi craving for the night. I had the eel avo roll and veg spring roll. The spring rolls were so fresh and piping hot I almost burned myself. I feel like it could have had more veg in there and the roll should be a bit thinner. They were decent though. The eel avo roll came with bright Red roe. It made for a great pic. It tasted pretty good. It did end up dipping it in soy sauce which I almost never do with sushi so subconsciously maybe it was missing some umph! Oh and the rolls were small.... For desert we had the tempura pound cake. It wasn't my first choice but the hubs seemed like he really wanted it. I was pleasantly surprised. There was some crisp to it and then moist and hot inside. I might give this one 3.5 stars but for going to round down to 3. My first experience at Taka was a bit disappointing for me, as I had been eagerly reading reviews from when it first opened as well as stalking their (curious) social media. I invited a client for lunch and of course hoped for the best, but what we got was mediocre - with some highlights. The new Taka is located in the large strip mall at 4600 Roswell Rd, anchored by Sprouts on one end and CVS on the other. It's a large complex with a lot of retail and some residential; The Collection apartments are located in the back. Newly built and obviously designed to be a mixed use complex, it's highly walkable but there's hardly any parking. I was nearly frantic trying to find a spot. (Obviously this is not Taka's fault and I definitely don't blame them, just pointing it out!) We were seated right away; the OpenTable reservation I made was unnecessary. There's some really nice outdoor seating areas, a smaller dining room and the sushi bar so lots of room to go around. Service was unremarkable. Our waitress was very friendly but disappeared after taking our order. We split: - Seaweed Salad ($5): five bucks seems a little excessive for this but whatever. The portion was large and the quality was higher than I was expecting when I ordered it. Would order again! - Grilled Brussels Sprouts ($7.70): I hate to say it but these were completely disappointing... I didn't go back for a second bite. The sprouts were absolutely swimming in black pepper, rendering them inedible. We didn't send them back as we had so many other items to munch on instead, but probably should have if just to alert the kitchen. - Japanese-style Gyoza Dumpling ($7.50): again, wow at this pricing... $1.25 per dumpling just seems so out of line with other restaurants in the area...but I'm wondering if they're all this expensive and I'm just crazy?! [EDIT: OK there are some comparable places price-wise. But damn.] - CNN Roll ($15; spicy tuna roll topped with sliced red tuna): named for the red-on-red CNN logo colors. Standard and just OK. - Levolor Roll ($9.70; tuna, avocado and mango roll topped with sliced cucumbers): this is the kind of roll I was hoping for with my Taka visit! Creative, original, texturally complex, tasty AF. YUM. Definitely recommend this one! - Rainbow Roll ($15.70; eel, cucumber and avocado roll topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and avocado): another standard. Once again, just OK. - Eel & Avocado Roll ($9.70; eel, cucumber and avocado topped with a mountain of red tobiko): this one had the potential to just be another standard sushi roll but the mass of tasty, quality tobiko topping the eel roll pushed it over the edge. Really yummy, and I was impressed with the texture! It was also just beautiful. - Lobster Tempura Roll ($18; lobster tempura with asparagus, mayo and masago wrapped with soy bean sheets): another disappointment. For nearly $20, I expected this one to blow me away but from both a flavor and texture standpoint it was kind of blah. All in all, I had hoped for a better meal at these prices. I could tell the ingredient quality was quite high, and maybe I just ordered all wrong, but when looking at the meal as a whole there were just as many misses as there were hits. We used to love this place, but they are really starting to skimp. The rolls are tiny now. Picture a Spider Roll the size of a grocery store California roll. And they're not putting fish egg or sesame on the outside of most of the rolls anymore. It's obvious they are trying to cut costs, but they will kill off their business in the process. They are also now running a liquor store out of the main dining room and it's crowding most of the tables. Sitting outside is the only option if there's more than 6 tables, even when it's 99° and humid. read more

Went in to order takeaway. First, some positives: The restaurant looks nice. The serving staff is very nice and friendly. That's the only reason for the 2 stars. I was there right at opening for dinner at 5pm. The menu looks ok although it is not anything special. I ordered sushi rolls. Now for the negatives: They add a 15% gratuity on your check even if you pick up your food yourself. I'm used to gratuities added (at some restaurants) when I sit at a table and being served but I questioned it for takeaway and the owner (I think) started arguing with me, claiming pandemic surcharges for their extra costs etc., etc., blah, blah. He said he would take the tip off (it was $10) but was visibly hostile and unpleasant about it. I did add a $5 tip because I felt bullied and honestly I was worried what they would do to my food. The owner muttered something like "Well, it's better than $0." I think the way I was treated was very unprofessional. The sushi rolls are very small and lacked flavor. The Super Crunch Roll, Copacabana Roll with some slices of dry tasteless mango on top and the Lobster Roll ($27) were surprisingly bland and the rice was dry and clearly not fresh. I ordered 4 rolls and got just two tiny blobs of wasabi (luckily I have wasabi at home in my fridge) and some soy sauce packets. They claim to make their own soy sauce but apparently they don't provide that for takeout orders, even though charging 15% gratuity! I paid $70 for the order including the $5 tip that I felt bullied into. It wasn't worth it. I was not a nice experience. They are obviously trying to make as much money as possible but this owner doesn't know the concept of offering superior food and service in order to justify premium prices. I wish I had read some of the less positive reviews beforehand. I will not go back even though it's conveniently located for me. I can not recommend Taka Sushi. It's a rip-off! read more

So this was unlike any sushi--or really any restaurant--experience I've ever had. This was our first time there and we went with someone who knew Taka. She just had him surprise us with different things. Things we probably wouldn't have ordered on our own. We loved almost all of it! Nothing was gross, nothing was poorly prepared. I first followed Taka on Instagram a few months ago because I enjoyed the chef's humor, and I finally had the opportunity to dine here. The anticipation was killing me because there's very few truly good sushi restaurants in the city, and now Taka is one of my two favorite sushi restaurants in Atlanta. Before we came in, I called ahead to see what specials and featured fish. To my surprise, Taka was offering four sashimi specials the Friday night we went - live scallop, hamachi tiradito, tuna carpaccio, and a salmon-mango special. We opted for the live scallop because it is so rare to find a restaurant serving it. It was perfectly paired with a dab of avocado and lime. For our other starter, we opted for the Uni Zukushi - four samples of uni atop ika, ama-ebi, hotate, and otoro accompanied by pickled wasabi. Frankly, this blew me away! We absolutely loved it because we love uni, and the chef is so generous. Finally, we ended the meal with the sashimi dinner plate, which came with an assortment of chef's choice fish, ships leaves, and lemon slices - so much better than the typical sampler. All of the ingredients the chef uses - even down to the ginger salad - are of extremely high quality. I think he grows some of his own produce and also gets fresh whole fish that he breaks down on site. Interesting, they sell some of this "sushi grade" fish in small blocks for customer at home use, which I have been searching for a while. The chef certainly knows how to pair unexpected flavor profiles that you don't see anywhere else in the city, and his passion for his craft shines through his food. Sushi is amazing! They don't overload the rolls with too much rice. They changed locations and can't sell alcohol but two glasses of wine is complimentary with your meal. For the most part, this is my second visit for Taka Sushi and Passion. The first was at their original location and the second was at their temporary location. Although I'm a fan of this restaurant, I can't say that their temporary location will have me coming back anytime soon. I'll wait until they return back to their original place.
