Really tasty Thai food with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. We did a takeout order for lunch during the week and our two dishes were ready within 15 mins. We got the massaman curry with tofu (vegan; $13 plus tax), and the pad see aiw with tofu (without egg to be vegan; $14.95 plus tax). They didn't ask me about spiciness level, so they ended up making everything quite bland -- I'll have to remember next time to ask for it to be spicier. Despite this, both dishes were delicious. -The massaman curry was adequately rich, though a bit oily (so we skimmed a good tablespoon off the top before we ate) -- it came with potato, carrot, tomato, and peanuts, along with small cubed fried tofu. Balanced flavours between the sweet and savoury, with good texture. This was excellent. 4/5 -The pad see aiw was also tasty, coming with a nice portion of mixed vegetables -- mostly broccoli, cabbage, carrot and onion. The noodles were beautifully cooked and coated with a sweet and savoury garlic sauce of some sort that was lovely. Could've used a bit more noodles given the price, but it was still solid. 4.5/5 All in all, in Vancouver's rather underwhelming Thai scene, this place stands out. Worth a try. read more

Here is not my favorite Thai restaurant but when I came for Italian festival on Commercial Dr., I like to have their $5 Tofu Pad Thai. I had it two years in a row and love their quick and friendly service. Very affordable and good quality food. read more

I'm undecided between a 3 and 4 stars for this place. The food is 3.5 stars, not terribly toned down to Western palate, nor is it very authentic. I guess for Vancouver, it is decent Thai cuisine. I have been here a few times now as it is near work. If the restaurant is crowded or if you are ordering something that needs more time (e.g. BBQ or grilled anything), be prepared for a wait of at least 15 minutes. The tom yum soup and tom kha are both good, personally I prefer the tom kha as the coconut gives a richer finish. It is not very spicy and has a tart taste to it. The pad thai is average and is Thai spicy (I could not remember if I requested for that). I like how they do have the typical Thai seasonings (cut chilies, fish sauce, sugar and chili flakes) in a container. You will need to request for it as it is only 1 container to be shared. The BBQ chicken is surprisingly good and worth the wait. The meat is tender and well marinated. I will skip the sweet chili sauce as it detracts from the taste. I will ask for the chili flakes instead if I want to spice it up. The fried rice has pineapple in it and is not bad, likewise for the chicken with eggplant dish. Not the best but acceptable. Oh, and the Thai iced milk tea absolutely hits the spot. This is the only item which is like what you will get in Thailand. I guess there are enough dishes on the menu to keep me going back, plus a hot bowl of tom yum is fantastic for the rainy chilly weather. read more

I don't know why people are complaining about the food: I ordered using Skip the Dishes, and was really happy with the food. It was super flavourful, and properly spicy! I am so tired of ordering "HOT" only to get a mild. Ordered Pad Thai, which is a must when trying any new Thai place. It was insanely flavourful, spicy, and authentic. I've been craving it ever since! I give the pad Thai 10/10. My friend ordered Panang Curry, which I've never tried because I always opt for green curry. I didn't have high expectations, but I was blown away! I've never tasted such a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, tangy, and savoury at once! I wish there was broccoli in it tho!! Will have to add on next time! My only disappointment was the Pad Kra Prao. I was expecting a mince with egg, how I usually like it, but instead I think they just gave me garlic sauce chicken. I did add on broccoli for an extra charge, and was happy with the amount they added in. However, this was not Thai Basil Chicken: it was garlic chicken. Tasty, but not what I expected. I absolutely love this Thai restaurant! I've been here a few times before when their restaurant was open during lunch hours - they had an amazing and affordable lunch menu. I came by here the other day to get some takeout. I got the royal pad thai and switched out the prawns for chicken. The royal pad thai is much better than their regular pad thai and it's only 50cents more I think. The royal pad thai is different than the regular pad thai since it uses a tamarind base sauce and not a ketchup base sauce like the other one. The portion is quite large and can feed 2 people or one if you are really hungry! The chicken pieces were cooked to perfection, the noodles were glossy, flavourful and had tons of sauce coated into it! There were also pieces of fried tofu and eggs incorporated into it and it was so delicious. They topped the noodles with julienned carrots, crushed peanuts and lime and it really tied the dish together. As much as I'm a huge fan of their Royal Pad Thai, I hope to come here soon with more people to try more of their dinner menu! read more

The food is fresh, and the place seems clean. If that sounds more like a Trip Advisor hotel review, you are right,... food need to be be more than a clean place to eat it. There is nothing wrong with what we were served except that you get more for less elsewhere, and maybe a touch more authentic flavour. The interior is ok but reminds me neither of Thailand or a cheap Chinese place,.. sort of in the middle on the inviting scale. If you are hungry for Thai and in the area and absolutely do not want to walk to the Red Pagoda, by all means, for an $8.50 lunch special you will get some rice and something tasty, but no spring roll, no anything with it except a few leaves of lettuce. Food quality taste wise, It's alright. The Crispy Chicken and cashew were cooked well but it was a little bland in flavors. It looked good, though. The grilled kebabs were alright as well, nothing special. It wasn't spicy at all, but you'd definitely want to pour a bit of some spicy sauce in there to give it a little kick. The staff were all friendly and efficient. Seems like a small family owned restaurant because i saw one of the staff's kid there. I came here for dinner with my in-laws and daughter and was pleasantly surprised. Their combo meals are an incredible value and their food is so much better than other thai food out there. It comes with a flavourful soup filled with real ingredients, not just a watery MSG broth, three (not just one) delicious deep fried wontons - I could eat 15 of them - they are so good!, a fresh salad topped with a scrumptious thai dressing, a generous serving of rice and a mini serving of ANY dish from the menu, not just a small selection of specials, but whatever you like! It was better in every way than the offerings from certain unnamed chain thai restaurants. We had red curry with kobucha pumpkin, a pad thai, that surprised me with its fresh "wok hai", obviously cooked by a chef that knows how to handle a wok. I would be happy to try their other wok fried dishes another time. Only criticisms, were that the crispy wontons, though perfect for me, were a tiny bit spicy for my 10 year old daughter. They handled our request for nuts on the side (due to an allergy) and provided attentive service throughout the evening. If you Love Pad Thai and you like cheap and fast, this is your place! Awesome lunch specials that are numbered on the menu, but their Pad Thai is the most requested dish by far. I happen to love it but especially theirs due to the extra dash of chopped peanuts and the juicy shrimp on top. Mmmm. A close 2nd is their appies menu and 3 especially worth noting are the Tiger Prawns in crisp wrap served with Thai sweet/hot sauce for dipping and the crispy wontons and spring rolls are awesome for starters. All in the 5-6$ range. There are many other curries, noodles and even soup entrees to order but you absolutely must save room for the Wait For It....cinnamon ice cream. It is definitely rich, favourable and a real treat! Always a favourite, especially in the summer when the open their doors and windows and you can observe the happenings on the Drive. I admit it. I am a closeted fan of T.T.H. We called in a rather large order in for pick up. Went out (in the cold rain) - to get it and arrived at the moment of bagging. Good timing, yes. It was well packaged and we arrived back at my aunt's place, filled up the table with a hot and yummy meal. First let me say that I LOVE THIS PLACE! It was my first introduction to Thai cuisine and it got me hooked for life. This cozy little Thai cafe serves fresh food at reasonable prices. I got hooked on Pad Thai but eventually expanded my horizons into numerous different types of curry (pumpkin is my favourite!). I've heard that the owner frequently makes trips back to his native Thailand and often brings back new recipes to try out. Not only does this place serve amazing food, but it also has a wide variety of drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). You can come into Take Thai Home anytime of the day and be guaranteed a seat as a lot of customers "take thai home" haha. Bestie and I got a 16oz red curry with pumpkin and prawns, and a large rice to take out, and holy moly we devoured the entire thing (and poutine, too... no judging...) The curry was rich, a little spicy, the prawns were perfectly tender, and the pumpkin was delicious! I would have liked a couple of other kinds of veggies in there (maybe bamboo shoots), but overall it was really tasty! A little more expensive than average for Thai, but very yummy! read more

This place is perfectly lovely. I come here when I'm hungry and want reliably good pad thai in a pinch. Their lunch special prices are on point. For $8 you can get pad thai and a side salad, and the portions are perfect. I've had both the take out and eaten in the restaurant, and their service is friendly and prompt no matter whether you're eating in or taking it to go. I've never seen it super busy in there, and found it's a pretty good spot to get some work done if you're looking for somewhere reasonably quiet where you can eat a good lunch at the same time. read more

YUM! Came here last night with a friend and really enjoyed the food. We ordered pad thai and green curry with eggplants and chicken. The pad thai is delicious - not too heavy on the sauce (which is good) and a bit of spice to give you a kick. The green curry was just awesome! I loved the eggplants and I especially loved the basil. The chicken, on the other hand, was really dry and over cooked. Still good though! Price is rather decent for Thai food, however, it is $2.00 for a bowl of rice! I was going to give 4 star but I must give one more for their fancy Thai-style decoration! :D I'm not a fan of any dessert in general but their Thai Ice tea and deep fried wontons (vegetarian) are my all-time favourite snack. It seemed to be a confusing combinations of friendliness and eratic standards. Our experience. 1. Some of the food was okay. The yellow curry was eatable, but not much like any other I've had. It was somewhat heavy and had an almost meaty flavor in the curry. I ordered 'sticky' rice with it. The rice was cooked ahead of time and I'm guessing stored (frozen?) in saran wrap, and then microwaved. It was like a stiff rubber puck sitting on a plate. I got another one as a replacement, and it was almost the same. Maybe this texture is normal in Thai sticky rice and I just don't know it, but I guess it's not normal. 2. My companion got pad thai. *Inedible*. It looked okay, but something in it was badly burned. You could smell it even a chair away. It was returned and they brought out a new one. Exact same thing again. We explained it was burned both times really clearly, but I don't think they understood. The thing that was disconcerting was that they didn't seem to care what the problem was. They weren't rude about it, they were fairly cheerful, but there seemed to be no interest in trying to improve their offerings. At least we got our money back without any hassle. Like I said, they were friendly (but communication was a slight problem most of the time unfortunately.) I hate to post a bad review about nice staff like that, but if you want a good meal, maybe think twice. Hopefully it changes for the better. read more

Take Home Thai is fresh, delicious & kind to the wallet - a triple threat! I had a dinner combo, which included a small soup (clear, sweet and sour broth with crunchy vegetables - yum!), a Panang Shrimp Curry (tasty but only 3 prawns), rice and a salad for only $9.80. I'm not usually a huge salad girl in general, don't get me wrong, I enjoy eating salad while deciding what I'm ACTUALLY going to eat (maybe steak?), but I couldn't get enough of this one! The crunchy freshness was the perfect compliment to the creamy curry and the dressing was some kinda sesame-sweet-spicy-amazing. Thai beers are available, Singha and Chang, and both make good choices to round out the classic Beer/Curry combo. Take Home Thai was busy when we arrived and my soup and curry both came out a little cold. They were delicious (after the waitress microwaved them for me - with a smile too, nice service) and I think only a result of a busy night, not a big deal. This place has a nice atmosphere in the evening, with low lighting and candles on the tables.It is obviously a very casual cafe-style establishment during the day, and this carries through into the evening, with orders being placed at the counter (no table service) and meals coming out in a haphazard style rather than structured into appetizers, entrees etc. I think this is a shame,although their clearly booming takeout business (their was a constant stream of customers picking up orders while we had dinner) may be more of a focus. read more

5 Stars!!! Take Thai Home... I love that name, it rolls of the tongue so easily! We ordered takeout so we could... wait for it... Take Thai Home! The food was piping hot when we arrived and a perfect temperature by the time we got home to new west to consume it. The veggies were plentiful, the meat did not have strange tendon/cartilage attached to it, and the rice was light and fluffy. We've only eaten here once, but so far I'm a fan. I cannot believe I have been working on Commerical Drive for almost two years and haven't tried Take Thai Home yet. I'd heard good things and was not disappointed. Its not the most authentic or creative Thai food I've ever tasted, but it definitely packs a punch in the fast and thrifty categories. I stopped by for a quick meal before catching a movie at Van East. Our group was served quickly and everyone was happy with their meals. I had the seafood in 3 flavors sauce - sweet, sour, and spicy was a winning combo in my book. The red curry looked interesting with nice big chunks of pumpkin and got the thumbs up from one companion. I will have to sample that next time. Another friend loved the Thai Noodle Salad with Tofu and the Cashew Chicken was a favorite for the less adventurous eaters in the group. I also tried the Chang Beer which was a slightly sweet brew that rounded out my meal nicely. I will definitely be Taking Thai home more often! read more

Good cheap lunch specials, starting as low as $6.50 for pad thai. Many of them include soup or a salad -- or both! My boyfriend's bbq chicken lunch special had both a small soup and salad, in addition to the chicken and rice, and was apparently delicious. My chicken with cashews was fine, but not exiting. The yellow curry was pretty great, and my friend's Tom Ka soup looked amazing. Lunch specials are on until 3:30 everyday. Very very disappointed with their attitude. I ordered a regular entree and called back to ask to have rice and salad because I forgot to add a combo and I said sorry for having to ask again and she hung up the first time. I called back and said hey you hung up and I said I just wanted to order the rice and salad that usually comes with the combo. The lady on the phone immediately got angry said I was blaming them for making a mistake and that it "wasn't the kitchen's fault" but I told her I wasn't I just wanted to order some more not sure why she said that and then I said that in the beginning I just wanted to buy the rice, salad and wonton like the combo because I forgot originally and then she continued to have a frustrated attitude it was so stressful to hear that (especially coming back from the clinic and hospital today) so I said I would just call back and my bf heard what happened called them back and told them that I just wanted the combo so they said they would make it for free and it was a misunderstanding. I got there and they still just charged me. Really upsetting. I loved going here with their normally bright a lovely attitude but after that I will never come back again. To add to that it was 50$ plus the 3.5 for the rest of the order (One order of pad kra pao,ladna and chicken satay appetizer and I agree with other reviews the portions are very very small) when I went to pick it up.
