Best bagels in the area. Ess a bagels are a few blocks away. I tried them 2 weeks ago and they were generic and flavorless. Tal Bagels always taste like what they are. an everything bagel ( my favorite) tastes like an everything bagel and the sesame bagel tastes like a sesame bagel. With ess a bagel you cant tell what bagel you are eating they all taste the same and have no flavor. Despite the best efforts of the cashier, the rudeness of the fellow taking my order was pretty memorable. Not rude like the fast moving smart alecks at Essa. Surprise surprise service is fast , staff are polite and attentive and the price is great for quality and quantity received and great cappuccino. Bagel are fresh , and the place is very clean and modern. I have come here now several times and service is consistently great. Fast and friendly!!! This is my third time coming here and their bagels are always fresh and delicious. I like how soft their bagels are, though I do wish it had a harder outer shell but it guess it's just all about preferences. Needless to say, it's still really good. Their cream cheese is also super yummy and definitely a must-try. The texture of their cream cheese is so milky and nicely whipped that doesn't make me feel like I'm eating a glob of fat. Instead it just tied everything in nicely and I like that they were very generous with the portion. I would certainly recommend this place if you're nearby. read more

Very rude staff. I was there for breakfast on Sunday morning and was picked out by a staff for getting a refill on my coffee.. which I didn't take. I was in the coffee bar to add sugar to my coffee... when I was picked out..if it was so bothersome to them.. they should have a regulating mechanism for the coffee.. you can't just pick on somebody like that!! Prices are higher, bagels are less plump, the amount of spreads added to bagel is way down. The bagel I just ate tasted like card. board I believe. Never ate cardboard. If you don't have your NYU badge on you they complain Bagel tasted like cardboard and only few raisins in raisin bagel. Go to Esse for value and quality instead. read more

On a good day, the salmon bagels here are to die for and the perfect way to start your day. I've come here a few different times and I've had mixed experiences. Once, an estranged woman came up behind me and talked so closely to me that I almost fell out of my chair (I have a quick reflex and she took me off guard). She continued to harass other customers who were simply trying to enjoy their food and management failed to take action. She eventually made her way to the counter where employees were kind enough to offer her a free bagel but she refused, demanding to get something else even though she had no money (??) On another occasion, my salmon bagel was fishy and I had to throw it away :-( I think this was a rare occasion as Tal's Bagels is great about cutting the fish fresh in front of you. read more

At first, I was planning to go to Ess-A-Bagel for a bagel but decided to stop by here instead. Service was very fast and they have a wide range of classic bagels and different flavors of cream cheese. I went with my all-time: everything bagel with cream cheese. I asked for less cream cheese but I still up with up a lot of cream cheese (for my preference). The bagel cost around $3.25. Not the best bagel I had but it was definitely fresh. I asked for my bagel to be toasted but the worker suggested that it doesn't need to since a new batch just came out... I was only 3 mins away from school and my bagel wasn't warm at all. Lastly, I appreciate how the toppings were all around the bagel; the usually only see toppings on one side of the bagel. Overall, it was just an okay experience for me. read more

The bagels are not worth enduring the terrible customer experience. Long line that doesn't move because of phone in orders. Employees all over each other behind the counter due to a complete lack of process. Multiple times I've reached the end of the line just to have them re-open every bagel that has piled up there because they've lost track of whose bagel is whose and what is in the unlabeled brown paper bags. Add to this the delivery guys crowding the place both inside and out as they wait on their orders. When I walked out today, I vowed that I will never walk in there again. The service is a little gruff and they tend to rush you, but I really enjoy their bagels. The whitefish salad is great here. I think this is a prototypical, authentic NYC bagel place. I wish they corrected their pricing for flat bagels on Seamless though. If you get a bagel with lox and cream cheese, and you ask for a flat bagel, it's an extra $6.20, so the total would be $22.15 instead of $15.95 (for a regular bagel). Tal Bagels, you're really giving Ess-a-Bagels a run for their money. While Ess-a was closed, Tal became the spot, gained a good amount of followers and now that Ess-a has reopened (1st Ave 0 19-Stuyvesant loop), I find myself conflicted with I'm sure many others. Tal Bagels and spreads are delicious, seasoned perfectly (there bagels are even toasted) and a bit smaller and less doughy than Ess-A. My personal favorite is a poppy seed bagel (toasted), veggie cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, onions and capers... Can't go wrong with that! read more

Tal bagels has messed up my order 3 weekends in a row. I have an allergy and explicitly state it on my order every time and yet they still screw up the order. I understand sometimes mistakes happen but the last 3 out of 3 orders have been completely ruined for me. When I call to let them know they said they would refund me and I have never been refunded. Something has gone terribly wrong I go to the Tal on First Avenue and 21 street. Picked up a big fish order today and something is wrong. The fish was horribly sliced wasn't fresh and the bagels were half burnt and half raw. This was my go to place and would walk by and would give them a thumbs up well not today. Many counter men one worse than the other. Shame on you. Crusty tops of everything in the case . Going in tomorrow to raise cane but they don't seem to care. read more

I use to love this place they have some of the best coffee until a few days ago I found a cockroach floating in my coffee cup I've never been so disgusted. I reported to the women behind the counter and I showed her she responded by laughing and stated " normally they are running across the counters. Excuse me? Horrible does not even begin to describe the experience I have had with them. To say they are overpriced would be a compliment because they truly are robbing you blind. $5 for a bagel with cream cheese, and they are nothing to run home to. I ordered 1/4 pound of cream cheese for $3.50 and had blind trust that I was getting what I ordered. It was comical how little was in the containers, we could barely scrape enough for 2 bagels worth. I love this place. Seriously one of my favorite bagel places in the city. I used to be a big Ess A fan but Tal's converted me. I've gone to others with longer lines and found they're not as fresh or flavorful. I guess that I can't hold a grudge against Tal bagels for replacing the beloved Ess a Bagel. I have had a hard time going there because of it, though. Finally, my bagel jones overrode my loyalty and I tried this place for lunch. It's probably because it's so new, but this is the cleanest bagel shop that I have ever eaten in. It's small and must get really crowded. I was suprised that the coffee was self serve, but it's nice to be able to make a cup to my specifications. Let's get to the main event- the bagels. They are OK. IMHO, they are too light. The crust is thin and the center is light. The tuna salad was OK. Tal is OK, but doesn't hold a candle to Ess a Bagel. read more

The bagels here are consistently good, though not the best in an area rich with dense holed round delights. Nice to grab for a snack on or on the way to the Stuyvesant Cove ferry. The whitefish salad I had on my latest bagel here was not good. Way too salty to enjoy. Also almost too expensive to enjoy. They must have been using the fancy pink Himalayan stuff. read more

This place failed in nearly every way. It was clean and the staff was friendly, so I guess that's worth the one star. I got coffee and a bacon, egg & cheese sandwich. The coffee was totally undrinkable, and I'm not that picky. Very seldom do I throw a coffee away, but in this case I had to. The egg sandwich looked good, but they used some kind of fake bacon, which I never would have ordered had I known. There was also a piece of plastic wrapper inside the sandwich, and the bagel itself wasn't that great, very doughy. And don't bother asking for it toasted either, because that didn't happen. I came to this bagel shop when they first opened up years ago. Yesterday was my first time back and it's not the same. the guy that waited on me was rude. He called me a "sir" and I'm a woman.
