Tal Bagels - 357 First Ave Tal Bagels has been my go-to spot since the day they opened within the last decade, despite plenty of competition in the neighborhood. For years, we ordered from them every Sunday, and even as we've tried to cut back on spending, we've remained loyal customers. This Mother's Day, we decided to treat ourselves and order from Tal again. I went for the pastrami, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel--something I've enjoyed in the past for its lean, flavorful pastrami. Unfortunately, this time it was barely edible: fatty, skimpy, and unpleasant. To make matters worse, the everything bagel with cream cheese my husband ordered never arrived--instead, we were sent a banana. We were still charged for the missing bagel. While I've had a few disappointing experiences with Tal in the past year, this one finally pushed me to write a review. The staff used to be warm and welcoming, but lately they've seemed curt and almost bothered by customers, even when the shop isn't busy. I lived in NYC all my life. I know what a really good bagel should be like. Well if you want the BEST bagel you ever had in your entire life Tal Bagels is the place to get it. They have the perfect crunch on the outside and the inside is not doughy at all. The size is perfect as well. If anyone would make a taste test of all the bagels stores in the 5 boroughs I would guarantee that Tal bagels will come out number 1 they are delicious perfect inside and out! Most of the times they are still warm or hot always fresh. They have many different bagels you can choose from each one is great. If you love bagels take my advice and run here. I bet you will agree with me that they have the best bagels you ever had. I highly recommend them. There is not any better bagel any where trust me PS their spreads are good too!. Tal Bagels is a chain bagel shop but I always enjoy the bagels and coffee. They don't skimp on the cream cheese and the bagels are fresh baked daily. This location at 357 1st Avenue isn't one of my favorites. I know what the bagels and cream cheese taste like so it's a safe alternative when I'm in this neighborhood. They have a good variety of cream cheese and bagel flavors. I like the multi grain and the pumpernickel the best. You're Usually given a good amount of cream cheese. This day I was satisfied. I'm recommending you try Tal Bagels. They have a huge variety of food selections. I'm addicted to the bagels! The customer service is hit or miss. I give the employees a friendly attitude so I usually don't have a problem. If they're busy you have to be patient. If you get it to go, I would check before I leave to be sure your order is correct. The bagels here are sooo small compared to other places! I ordered nova and scallion cream cheese on an everything bagel and while it was tasty the ratio of bread to the rest of the sandwich is so off proportion. A section of the cream cheese and nova were jutting out with no bread, so there were a couple of bites with just salmon and cream cheese. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all visible employees were wearing masks, and social distancing was encouraged. While no indoor seating was available, two small tables and a few chairs were available on the sidewalk. Ordering was a little odd, but it didn't really detract from our breakfast experience. My toasted plain bagel was excellent - literally my ideal bagel. It was nicely crisped and slightly crackly on the outside with a perfectly chewy interior. I ordered the lox spread which I would definitely order again. It was delicious. I do wish there was an option of ordering light cream cheese, because I would have been fine with 1/4 of the amount. Tal's actual bagels are decent, far from the best in NY. But Tal is convenient so we come often. The biggest issue with this bagel shop is their service. They never write down your order which is fine, most places can get it right without doing so, but here, everyone becomes confused order is always wrong and it becomes some huge ordeal. I've never ordered a lunch or breakfast sandwich where I wasn't asked at least 3-4 times what I ordered. And after being asked so many times the order is still wrong when I get home and open my sandwich. Unless you're ordering just a bagel with cream cheese I've never been here and seen anyone's order go smoothly it's a complete disaster at this place. It came with tomato and their bagel sandwiches also come with a free mini squeezed orange juice which is nice. I'll be back when I'm in the mood for something fishy. They also have a 10.99 pastrami or corned beef sandwich which I might have to try as that sounds like way too much of a good deal. Their bagels used to be light, fluffy, and had the perfect crunch and now I find them chewy and stretchy. I've found that there are either hardcore Tal's fans or Tompkin/Ess-a fans. I will admit I am a fan of both! Ordered the scallion cream cheese and sausage/egg/cheese on an everything bagel one weekday morning. Their scallion cream cheese is TO DIE FOR and their SEC is solid as well. I'd say the biggest difference between this and other famous bagel places are that the bagels are less plump and more chewy, rather than the dense cakey consistency at TSB. For someone who lived in NY her whole life & the last 3 years over in California, it's always a pleasure to return home to delicious bagels. Best bagels in the area. Ess a bagels are a few blocks away. I tried them 2 weeks ago and they were generic and flavorless. Tal Bagels always taste like what they are. an everything bagel ( my favorite) tastes like an everything bagel and the sesame bagel tastes like a sesame bagel. With ess a bagel you cant tell what bagel you are eating they all taste the same and have no flavor. I am so glad to live near this place and it is my reward to myself on Saturday mornings. read more
