Here's the updated five-star review with your additions: 5 Stars for Tamales Alberto's - Los Angeles I stopped by Tamales Alberto's today after craving some truly authentic tamales, and wow... this place did not disappoint. I found it on Yelp while searching for something legit, and the great reviews were absolutely spot on. Coming from Mexican descent, I know exactly what a real, high-quality tamal should taste like -- and this is 100% the real deal. You can taste the passion and love in every bite. The masa is flavorful, the fillings are generous, and everything tastes like it was made with genuine care and tradition. The place itself is small but cozy, and it feels welcoming the moment you walk in. The staff is friendly, helpful, and adds to the overall great experience. If you're looking for authentic, delicious tamales in Los Angeles, this spot is a must-try. I'm definitely coming back!

Tamales is so good I ended up eating everythang! The 3 combo meal is perfect. The tamales itself are perfect in flavor and texture. I had the pollo, the spinach and the jalapeño. All so good. Great friendly service too!!!

One of our local families favorite spot! The ambiance is family friendly. Offering aguas frescas and the traditional cafe de olla. A nice touch is they have the cold version of this coffee, especially on hot days. The service was okay, the cashier noted one of our orders wrong and first debated back with us but ultimately recovered. The tamales were delicious, they melt in your mouth! And the chilaquiles are on point (just be cautious they are spicy).

We were very disappointed by our visit this Sunday morning. Our food was brought out to us on paper plates and togo cups meanwhile the table next to us had proper silverware and plates. Seemed as if we were being kicked out. The drinks & tamales were cold; the quality of the masa was different as well as the portions. The waitress/cashier seemed annoyed when we asked her for a rag to clean our table. We were also given a very unfriendly response by our questions about the menu and their online ordering system. The unwelcoming customer service discouraged us from asking to get our food reheated/replaced. What a shame, this place has always been our first option for tamales in this area. Our search for new tamale businesses begins.

The breakfast burrito w/potatoes , sausage, bacon?, eggs, and avocado $15 total and a great size
    Anahi M.

I got the breakfast burrito. I did add avocado. It totaled to $15.00! I'm going to be honest LA breakfast burritos are sometimes that amount and...small and flavorless. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE!!! They did it justice with a good portion and the chips and salsa that came with it were good. They had a tomato sauce that was not spicy and a green one that was I mean what a great combo. I didn't look for ketchup the sauces were enough to add a kick. The potatoes were cooked great and honestly it came together wonderfully. The service was great they were pretty busy when I came and were still nice and attentive. They even apologized for the wait (it was no less than 10-15 mins but the care was appreciated) I hope to eat in next time because the horchata looked delicious but I didn't get to try it. They have a variety of food and some limited space for sitting but overall I liked my first time in this restaurant! I took my order to go and I don't know of they're related but I did grab a coffee next door it's like a little alley with fake grass and it seemed like they coffee cart may be connected to the restaurant. Coffee spots only open Wednesday-Sunday and I grabbed the mocha de piaxtle. If you don't like some spice in your coffee perhaps don't try that...I enjoyed it! It was a new experience to have spice in a coffee but it melded well. It wasn't that sweet tho!

Cheese in the "Cheese & Jalepeno" tamales.
    Sarah R.

I have never had a tamal I didn't like- until now. We ordered 8 dozen for the holidays (beef, chicken, and cheese). My family normally makes our tamales but life got in the way this year. Still, we were excited to support a local, small business, and try something new. Ordering was easy, just did it on the phone. Picking up was easy too. But the food... your stomach will not thank you. First, these tamales are 90% masa. We kept having to cut huge chunks off because it was just mouthful after mouthful of masa. I'm a vegetarian so I only ate the cheese & jalepeno ones. Oooo girl- the cheese would not melt, had the consistency of soggy tofu, with such an odd/dull flavor, and each tamal had literally ONE jalepeno slice. Sometimes half a jalepeno slice. And these are not "green" tamales like you would think- they put salsa ranchera in it and it tasted straight out of a jar. We ended up getting more peppers and salsa and of course eggs to make them more edible but still no good. My family has literally never had any tamales left over after the holidays because we love them so much. But oooh we had BAGS left over this year! No one wanted to eat them. I called the shop after Christmas and let them know our experience. I asked if I could return the tamales we didn't eat and the owner let me know that I could return them only on the day he would be there and for half the price. Which I decided would be a whole lotta hassle to schedule and get down there when he was in, so didn't do. This is my first two star review and it wasn't easy to write, but this is my honest opinion and experience... could've given one star but the staff was nice.

The menu is quite simple, but beware that no prices are listed on the main menu, but they are on the paper menus. They accept Apple Pay/credit cards. I ordered the asada burrito and the pollo caramelo and added the grilled poblano (as recommended on Yelp!). The tortillas were the true stars -- soft, nice chew, with a buttery mouth feel (probably lard). The fillings were just ok. The inside reminded me of a Taco Bell 7 layer burrito -- a lot going on but all the flavors kinda blend together. I (incorrectly) thought the beans were refried, but they are not. Whatever is going on inside, I didn't find much structure. The burrito was the best. The caramelo was a lazily folded burrito. I read that it was like a quesadilla, but I couldn't disagree more. I would skip this next time. I spent $25 and it was a lot of food, but I wasn't impressed, especially given the hype and the fact that LA should really be the pinnacle of Mexican food. Not sure if I'll make a second trip here.

Beautiful plants hanging, perfect Spanish music in the background (any place playing Natalia LaFourcade is a win). The drinks were great! I had the jungle bird which was fun. Food was so good too. The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried. The staff are lovely humans who really seem to care about their customers. We have some faves on the menu. The bean dip is fabulous and I'm addicted to the baby gem salad. They have recently amped up the filling in the delicious crispy squash blossoms and I love the acidity and heat. The fish is also a hit in my books. One dish that doesn't work for me is the lamb chops, which is a shame since it's my favorite protein. I've ordered them multiple times with clear instructions on temperature and have found them overcooked and tough. The beef tostada was just ok. Whilst I loved the pickled veg on the side, the beef was underseasoned. It wasn't bad - just not up to the standard of other dishes. The vibe in the place is welcoming and the restaurant is nicely appointed. We will continue to be regulars and it's really worth trying if you haven't been yet.

The waiter recommended the crispy shrimp taco, but I actually enjoyed the vegetarian tacos more. I love cauliflower and poblano so that taco was a great starter. So much flavor and a variety of textures. The tortillas were super flavorful too. The potato taquitos came next and I am actually obsessed. The crispy shrimp taco was really good, but I also tried a crispy fish taco and would honestly get that over the shrimp. I think there was mango or something in the coleslaw of the fish taco because it had a really nice fresh flavor to it. Last, I had the vegan Korean BBQ taco. The mushroom shreds & the flavor were just perfect. Again, as a pescatarian I have really never had Korean BBQ because it's so heavily meat focused. I truly loved this taco. My favorite thing about these burritos is how "home-made" they are, the salsas and meats are fresh and taste like they came out of an abuelitas kitchen. I still need to try the crunchy tacos and nachos which look great, I recommend trying this classic establishment at least once if you're in the area.

There is a private lot but fills up, and there's also adjacent street parking. I love sitting at the bar and seeing the plate being prepared. Also love the open freezers so you can see the fresh seafood hanging. Another standout was the homemade hot sauces! Each had a distinct flavor from sweet, smokey, and hot so it was really fun to try. The ceviches and the raw cold dishes were my favorite, especially the scallop aguachile! SO GOOD. Would order that 100 times.

Order the Kanpachi taco: a shatter-crisp blue corn tortilla, molten fried cheese, silky buttery kanpachi, and a slick of smoky chili oil drizzled over top. The kind of taco you'll think about long after you've experienced it. You can't go wrong with the ceviches, cocteles, or aguachiles. The ceviche is bright with lime and the cocteles are lush and briny with a tomatoey kick, and the aguachiles hit with sharp citrus, fresh herbs, and it's a really decent amount of fish. If you're looking for a more traditional hot entree get the Filete al Cabrón: grilled sea bass with cilantro-lime rice, beans, and warm flour tortillas. Simple and so comforting. Fresh seafood can be hard to find in L.A., but Holbox does it like no other. Takes me back to Mexico City every time!
