The calamari had the most god awful smell and I was not going to risk getting food poisoning. I basically only come here for the lavender milk tea and crispy chicken nuggets. The lavender adds such a unique flavor to the milk tea that makes me addicted to it. Personally, I'm not a big fan of chewing on the regular tapioca balls so I love that I can get mini tapioca here. You can also customize the sweetness and ice levels to your desire, so I usually lower the sweetness a little bit because the drinks are quite sweet. The crispy chicken nuggets are always fried perfectly and juicy, and you can get them on a 1-5 scale of spiciness. I have a decent spice tolerance and I thought the 3 wasn't spicy at all, so maybe I'll try 4 or 5 next time. The prices here are also on the cheaper end compared to other boba joints ($3.29 for a flavored milk tea with boba). Completely UN-Satisfied with the service and how long it took for me to even get one bite of my meal. I ordered a combo meal that came with a pretty good cup of boba, but the food was--how should I put it-- was completely disappointing. I was already really hungry by the time I entered and ordered my food, but after waiting for 30 minutes and having no food served I was getting really hangry. After an HOUR I still haven't gotten even a glimpse of my food and by this time I'm getting really impatient. After around another 10 mins, I FINALLY get my food only to see that what I got was a very plain, and simple meal that wasn't even up to the quality it should have been at considering it took SUPER LONG to make. I've had Tapioca House in Houston and it was good. However, the one in Austin, not so good. Ordered the Taro Milk tea here and it tasted horrible. It was not smooth at all. It tasted like there was a thin layer of film in it. Maybe it was old or a bad batch or something, but I took 4 sips and ended up throwing it away. The drink did not even look right. It looked like something that was sitting there for a week. The place was dead, so that could explain using old ingredients. What a waste. I first tried Tapioca House in Houston, but since I visit Austin more frequently, this location will do. I'm not really too picky with bubble tea drinks and I don't usually get tapioca in my drinks. The classic milk tea and almond milk tea are usually a favorite for me, so that's probably my recommendation. As for food, get the spicy crispy chicken nuggets, they are seasoned very nicely! You can order the spiciness between 1-5, I get 3 because it is the perfect balance. I love the fried basil that is cooked with the chicken because it gives a very Thai infused flavor, delicious! As for the store, not the cleanest or nicest looking but the staff is friendly. Great prices for both drinks/food and just like its neighbor, Coco's, it's become a go-to spot when in Austin. read more

I understand why some people gave T-House some bad reviews, but I'm giving it a 5 because it does well what it should do well. It's not the shiny new gourmet or fusion place. This place is a fantastic Asian food dive on the Drag. It's cheap, simple, and spiritually true to a street bar restaurant in Asia. Some of the things on the menu are great, and totally unique to this part of town. For me, complaining about the service or the cracked seats is kinda pointless. First time visiting Austin, TX and was recommended to stop by this place after the UT football game for some grub. Our group of 9 called the restaurant and was informed the kitchen closes at 11:45PM. We get to the restaurant by 11:00PM and wait in line to order. 6 out of 9 people get their orders in, it is now 11:25PM. As our 7th person is ordering, the employee in the back whispers to the cashier that the kitchen is closed, and that he would be the last food order. There were still multiple people in line, and we had been waiting since 11:00PM. 2 of our friends did not get to order food, even though we all entered the restaurant at 11:00PM. Had we have known that not everyone would get food, we would have gone to another establishment. We ended up sharing our food with our 2 remaining friends, as they were starving as much as we were. At 11:55PM, while we're trying to scarf down our meals, the restaurant turns the lights off on us. WHILE WE'RE EATING! WHO DOES THAT?! We finish up and are out of their restaurant by 11:58, we express our distaste to the employees, and her excuse is "once the kitchen is closed, we can't do anything". -Don't tell us you close at 11:45PM and then close at 11:30PM -At least inform people that have been WAITING IN LINE since 11:00PM that they might not get their food, don't just cut it off when they get to their register! -Don't turn the lights off on your customers 5-minutes before the store closes while we still have food in our mouths. I've only written a total of 4 Yelp reviews in my entire life, all 5-stars. This kind of ridiculous behavior warrants my coming out of the woodwork to put them on blast and onto my official ban list. Tables might be dirty. Lines might be ridiculously long. But I like this place. Its cheap taiwanese food. I usually either get the crispy chicken nuggets or the curry chicken with rice. Bill comes out to $8.11 after tax if I get the black tea boba, or ~$9.50 if I get some milk tea boba. Food is good. Stir-friend bean sprouts and tea-cooked eggs are yummy. The green veggies--are they peas?--are good too. The spicy levels don't mean a thing here. Just get spicy level 5. Then walk to the back and add spices on your own once you get your food. You mean Coco's?" No, not Coco's. Turns out that Tapioca House is just two doors down from Coco's on The Drag, but I just never knew it existed until recently! There is no sign, and it's located in this little crook right in between Chase and the Pho place. While I haven't tried their food and Tea Haus still definitely delivers my favorite boba milk tea, I've found myself walking over for Tapioca House's 1/4 sweet boba milk tea at least weekly when I have a hankering. read more

BEWARE UT Freshman: You will see Tapioca House on the Drag when exploring campus/west campus. You will crave tapioca and think Tapioca House is your only option. You will enter. You will order a drink with boba. You will regret it. Tapioca House is kind of a UT staple - everyone's been, most people continue to go, but the smart ones walk a little farther to Momoko or drive to something better. You really never know what you're going to get here. For the most part, it's not anything good, or worth returning for. I've had quite a few drinks here in my young days, and when craving tapioca at 11 PM one night, I returned. Things have changed a bit, but not for the better. The drinks are mediocre, nothing horrible, but nothing special. The tapioca itself is prettyyyy bad. Like, gross. It's hard, not soft and chewy the way it's supposed to be. The restaurant itself is pretty dirty and probably violates a ton of health codes - overflowing trash cans and cockroaches crawling on the floor. EW. Also, in the heat of summer, I expect any Texas establishment to turn on the A/C. Nope, not at Tapioca House. It's probably hotter inside than outside. Sorry, I'm not sorry, but I'll pass. I've never tried the food, but I'd never want to. From what I hear it's nothing special. There are a ton of other options on the Drag that you can try. Watch as the workers can't figure out how to work the blenders or anything at all. I came here because I didn't want any pho next door that my friends were eating at. I really like boba, but this is simply average. I love their menu (going to have to try Do Do Green Tea some day simply by virtue of the name), but would always rather go to Momoko if I'm near campus and get a craving, which is rare these days. Customer service is iffy. The counter person was too quiet to be heard over the din of a bunch of UT students talking in large, loud groups. Then somebody missed my head (and eyeball!) by an INCH twice while moving tables around at sitting-down eye-level. Scared the bubble-lovin' right outta me! I had a taro milk tea bubble tea last time, and the cookies-and-cream flavor just wasn't that intense. Actually made me get pouty. I love taro milk tea, and watering it down does not make me happy. Too many chewy, chewy boba -- I like 'em to have a little spring, and for there not to be quite so many. I've also tried their pineapple flavored 'jelly' option and found it to be pretty grossly sweet. Strawberry tea (not milk tea) was basic black tea with artificial strawberry, and trust me, a large is too large. I'll refrain from commenting much on the food, as I've never tried it, but I will say it looks like pretty standard, plain fare. I love the machine that seals up the cups tightly, but in the end, that's just not too practical. What if you want to shift the straw around? You're left with a gaping hole for tea to spill out. I've been here about 4 times and each time the service has been horrible. The workers there get easily stressed out by large groups and take out their frustrations on the customers. A person in front of me ordered a fruit slushy and when she was handed something other than what was ordered, the guy asked her 2 or times if she was sure that that was what she got. Since the place is small, it gets pretty loud in there and it's difficult to hear the workers yell out drink orders. they need to invest in some kind of sound system with a mic. the food is decent and the drinks were so-so. Honestly, the food isn't very good. The entrees just come with rice, an egg, some beansprouts, and then whatever you happen to order that day (grilled pork chop, crispy chicken nuggets, etc.) However, the drinks are passable and meals come with green/black tea with/without tapioca. For 50 cents you can change it to whatever drink you want (about a $2.50 value). So what basically happens is I want a cheap drink, so I buy the food. This is my regular hook up for Bubble Tea in Austin. My favorite being Lemon flavored Green Tea with Pearls (or "Big Tapioca" in Tap House lingo). Very popular with the Asian student population. Since they are open until Midnight every night, you'll often find the place filled with asian students in the late evenings. Due to the occasional crowds, it can be very noisy inside. Chinese/Taiwanese pop music is usually playing on the stereo. Pearl Drinks - very good selection. Lots of fruit flavors and fresh fruit options. Slushies are pretty popular along with the straight milk-tea variations. If you dont like the tapioca pearls (available in big or small sizes), you can opt for "jelly" in a wide range of colors/flavors. Food - Combo meals are very inexpensive and include an entree and a pearl drink. About $6 total. One good value are the dumplings since you get 12 to an order. However, be warned these take about 15 minutes to prepare (since they're starting from frozen). In general I'd say the food is pretty mediocre. Cheap food for college students. Service - this really depends on who is working. Sometimes they can get very backed up when a rush hits and it can take up to 15 minutes to get a drink made. Tapioca House has 3 locations - Austin, Richardson and Houston. The Austin location is on the south end of the drag next to the Pho place - and coincidentally 2 doors down from Coco's - one of the only other Pearl Drink places in town. read more

How is this place still in business? I did something I never, ever do at a restaurant. I threw away my food without even eating it. The university's on break. I get it. It's a wet and rainy day and as I was walking down the Drag, I remembered a very tasty soup I had picked up there about a year ago 'to go." I go in.. There was no one eating there. Well, the cook had her family in the back eating, but there were no customers. They refused to make the soup to go because I think they were out of the containers. They were out of tapioca balls in their normal size, and they were out of the entree I tried to order next. I should have walked out then, but I soldiered on and ordered another menu item (Mushroom Tofu) that the counter guy said was one of his favorites. The cook gets up from her table and goes back to make it. Again, I should have walked out when I heard the microwave go off in the back. But, I picked up my food and headed back to my office. A couple of storefronts away, my curiosity got the best of me and I peeked inside to see what it looked like. Gelatinous goo on top of rice with a brown egg on the side. It looked and smelled exactly like day old Chinese food that you microwaved up as leftovers. The sauce had the consistency of ectoplasm from the Ghostbusters movie. They didn't even make an attempt to properly heat the meal through... They scooped out rice, microwaved the tofu up in the back and dumped it on the plate. It looked old and worse, it smelled like it was a couple of days old and not in a good way. Vile. Really really vile. I never throw out food because I'm cheap. However, I was NOT eating this stuff. I had also been hit up for a meal by a homeless guy about 2 blocks up the Drag. It was so disgusting looking that (while I did think of it) thought it was better and safer to just throw it away than to give the guy the meal. Even though I work across the street, Tapioca House does into the same bin as Veggie Heaven for me. Never, ever again. I suppose congratulations in in order for TH. The bar is pretty high (or in this case, low) to actually cause me to never set foot in your store again and you achieved it. huzzah? read more

Another staple for a college student. Cheap food and somewhat reminiscent of home. I love Tap House cause they are good about letting me have my way. I like my tapioca drinks at a certain level of sweetness. I like more bean sprouts instead of the egg and they let me have it. Well, not a big deal until you've dealt with a lot of asian places that charge you for substitutions even if your substitutions save THEM money but that is another review for another day. Depending on my mood I would order the various: Drinks: - Almond Milk Tea - Hazelnut Milk Tea - Honey Green Tea w/ Tapioca (they have fun colored ones too!) or lychee jelly with the green tea. Out of all the bubble tea stores in Austin I have been to, Tapioca House has the cheapest bubble tea in Austin. I think the bubble tea is pretty good for its price. The staple milk tea is $2.50, which is incredibly cheap compared to other stores where it'll be more than $3.00. The food is also decent for its price. The pearls can be soft or hard. It really depends. I would just ask whether the pearls are fresh or not just in case. I normally get the egg pudding, which is soft most of the time. The ambience itself is all right. It can be pretty dark, especially at night. The store is not as clean as CoCo's, which is next door. However, if I ever just want cheap bubble tea, I would come here instead. read more

Tap House is a staple on the Drag and it's almost always overflowing with people. And by people, I mean Asians. It's not a fancy, frou-frou place by any means, but a quick, easy place to grab the cheapest bubble tea in the area. If you want truly quality bubble tea that costs an arm and leg, go to Momoko. If you want better food and atmosphere, go to Coco's. But Tap House is, inexplicably, my old stand-by and the place that I prefer. Maybe it's the slightly cheaper prices. Maybe it's the familiar dinginess. Maybe it's the fact that I will inevitably bump into someone I know, or someone I think I know or someone who looks a lot like someone I know. Can't say I love their food, but the drinks are pretty good - you can't go wrong with their flavored teas. The watermelon juice is great too. Take it from this Taiwanese American guy - This place is Taiwan. It has it all, for better or for worse... the cramped quarters, the blazing sun, the authentic food, the mostly Chinese speaking employees \ customers, the utter lack of decor, the dozens of Asian magazines in the back... it's pretty darn authentic. Not a nice place by any stretch, but like almost all Taiwanese street food places, the only thing that really matters is the food. Been here twice and it was really good both times. Had the grilled pork chop combo and the beef noodle combo... both were great. The rice based dishes came w/ stir fried bean sprouts and a tea egg.. both were awesome. Combos come w/ a drink and I get the green tea w/ tapioca... cold green tea w/ sugar in it... reminds me of Japanese drinks. One time my tapioca was firm and one time soft... not sure how it usually is. Just from reading thru their menu and eating there twice, I can tell that the selection here is much more authentic than at Cocos in my opinion... the food more like Taiwanese home cooking. If I cared about decor this place would get a 3, but I think the food here is delicious. I'm probably going to go back once every other week to try a good part of their menu. read more

I recently ordered boba tea from Tap House and was informed that my buy 10 get 1 free card was invalid because their stamp was stolen a while ago. The establishment has allegedly been telling all their customers this, redistributing new cards in their place. There are several things dishonest about this. I had several of the old stamps and three of the new stamps. Why would they continue to stamp my old card with new stamps if they already knew their old stamp was stolen? Furthermore, I had been to the restaurant the week before for tea as well, and they didn't tell me that my card was invalid (it was a different cashier that time). From this incident alone, I can't judge whether or not the establishment is truly trying to swindle its clientele. However, it certainly seems fishy. Even if they are not trying to deceive their customers, I don't feel that they have an appropriate business model in place. In my mind, the best route to take would be to buy both a new stamp and new cards that will slowly find their way into circulation. In this way, whoever stole the old stamp would, at most, get a single free boba tea after filling his or her old card with old stamps. Meanwhile, the rest of the customers who had the old cards could finish filling their cards and get their rightful free tea as advertised. It seems like the cost of handing out one dishonest boba tea is much lower than the cost of cheating all of the other customers -- I certainly won't return to fill the remainder of my card. Finally, I read through other reviews on Yelp for this establishment and saw that other customers have had similar issues. read more

Tap House has been my go-to place for the last couple of years simply because it's close and cheap. Usual: Chicken Nugget & Rice combo (level 4 spicy) with a strawberry slushie. Occasionally I get a jasmine milk tea but those give me tummy aches (lactose intolerant hehe). So nowadays the delicious strawberry slushie has been my favorite. This may be strange, but I like how the slushie freezes the tapioca balls and makes them hard (har har) and more fun to eat. They have a pretty good variety too. So my recent discovery here is to get the fried pork chop/fried chicken steak instead of their signature chicken nuggets. Why? You get a lot more bang for your buck. The piece of meat on either of those options is huge, as in span across the length of the Styrofoam box huge instead of the 8 or so chunks of chicken you get otherwise. Sure there is no deep fried basil to accompany your meat, but hey I'll sacrifice that for some more chicken. Egg, bean sprouts and rice are still the same, though price for the combo has gone up since college days it seems. I'm gonna start off with NEVER EVER EVER ORDER THEIR DODO MILK TEA unless you like the taste of artifical bubble gum in the form of drink I AM WARNING YOU just because it is at the top of the menu panel it does NOT mean it is delicious!! Also once I ordered a mung bean slush and the girl making my drink picked up the plastic box of mung beans and looked at it for a bit before asking her co-worker a question and then scraped the beans off the bottom of the box and it was just super sketchy and the drink itself was sort of bizzare-looking and clumpy so I never got that again. Aside from a few mishaps, decent milk teas & teas for the price and proximity to campus, but they are always a little bit too sweet. Food is good if you are craving fried, oily foods, but they recently upped the prices of their combos (I think it's like $7-$8 for a meal + drink now, compared to the $6-$7 it was before?), so that is super unfortunate. I always get their mushroom & pork, which is basically really lumpy, starchy, and mysterious but tastes like oyster sauce over rice, so it is enjoyable. Mediocre Taiwanese snack food. The combos are a good deal if you need some Asian food fix. Rice or noodle + some form of meat/veggie + green/black tea with tap for about $6.50. I would get the crispy chicken or pork steaks. Steer away from the noodle dishes. One tip: Do not get the Stewed Salmon combo. I wanted to try it since I had never ordered it, but seems like no one ever orders it. The cashier didn't know what number it was on the menu and had to look it up. These weird...white??? blocks of fish are NOT salmon. If I had an experience like that^ at another restaurant, I wouldn't go back. Tapioca House has a slight edge, I think, over its very close neighbor, Coco's Cafe, on two things: 1) They offer a punch card for frequent visitors. I am a coupon and punch card hound. I am always struck by a craving for bubble tea so if I'm going to shell out dough for it, why not get rewarded for continuing to patronize them, right? Standard issue -ten purchases/punch and then you get to redeem it for a free one...No punch card at Coco's Cafe. 2) Their prices are slighter cheaper than Coco's Cafe - food and bubble drink-wise. I think that this is partly due to the fact that the food is served in/on styrofoam and you don't get the complimentary soup and you get plastic utensils whereas at Coco's they have real plates and flatware plus the soup. However, their meals/entrees are served with two small side dishes - one time it was stir fried cabbage and stewed egg and another time it was fried green beans and stewed eggs. You should probably ask before you order what the two sides are if you're picky. Lastly, I must say the food quality can vary greatly. Although it is a deal for the combo meal that Steven mentions, I went once and had some decent pork chops and the next time it was very tough and chewy. So sometimes, I do what I winded up doing tonite - eating at Coco's and then going next door to get my bubble tea (and card punched). I also like that they have big pearls AND small pearls - small tapioca boba and the lychee jelly is also yummy instead of tapioca boba sometimes especially w/ the fruit flavors. Sometimes the large pearls can be a little much on the chewiness and the small ones are softer and easier to chew/swallow. Lastly, there's a lot less ambience/colorfulness in Tapioca House. It seems a litle dingier and less clean...but that's kinda minor. Parking pretty much sucks so I don't go often unless I luck out and find a parking spot. Beware of Tap House! It draws you in every time, tempting you with it's cheaper prices (compared to it's next door competitor), and tells you that it won't be worse...but I am disappointed every time with their drinks and leaves me regretting the decision to come. The drinks wouldn't be that be either, but their tapioca pearls that come in most bubble tea drinks are consistently tough and chewy, and I am forced to skip ordering them. I have tried some of the food and most are not that good. I -am- a fan of their spicy fish cakes, however, and is the sole reason I come! Great snack food! I am not usually a reviewer of a restaurant's interior, but being inside Tap House, I feel very uncomfortable. It's a very cramped area, bad lighting, and just not a good vibe overall at all. I understand there are many many people who say that the reduced price more than makes up for the drop in quality (or no drop in quality according to some). Why Tap House is better than Coco's: 1) The combo meals: your food includes a milk bubble tea; Coco's makes you buy a drink separately. 2) The prices: slightly cheaper. Used to be a lot cheaper, until Tap House raised it's prices :( 3) Frequent buyer stamp card: Coco's does not have one... 4) Food is more authentic...in my opinion. It reminds me of my mom's cooking. Minus one star because...service is slow, but so is Coco's. Interior decorations could use a touch up, and they need more seating. read more

ONLY REASON I AM A FAN: it is extremely close to campus, convenient, quick, and inexpensive. The tapioca is honestly hit or miss, while the drinks are usually pretty good! Food-wise, I've started to shy away from the Crispy Chicken Nugget meal and head towards the Crispy Pork Chop. For some reason, the Chicken Nuggets just aren't doing it for me anymore. The Chicken Nuggets now seem to be made differently, and that's not okay with me! The Pork Chop is made really well and is typically moist and crunchy! The things that make me most sad are that they no longer offer milk teas with the combos, but ONLY green or black tea. If you get whatever drink you're used to getting now, they'll charge you an extra $0.50. read more

I'm probably fond of this place because of the many fundraisers I've attended here. I love that you can hang out at Tap House or just get a quick meal to go. I also love how many times I embarrass myself here by saying hi to someone who looks like someone else. Freakin Asians. The only thing worth getting here is the chicken nugget meal. Get it spicy! Their drinks are okay. I only get them because they come with the meal. read more
