The flavor of the food was great, however the temperature wasn't. I ordered the lamb chop meal with greens and mac. The sides were great, but the lamb chops were way overcooked. I asked for med, and they came out well done. We also got the wing meal, and the wings came out lukewarm like they had been sitting for a long time. However, the waiter was super nice, and tried to help us. They rectified the issues, but overall it was a little disappointing to have that experience.
This is my new favorite restaurant in Houston. And I hope I get to go back real soon. It was a wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend making a reservation, because this place was crowded the whole time we were there. However, because we had a reservation, we were seated immediately. Our waiter, Brian was amazing! He answered all of our questions. He made sure our birthday girl was celebrated. And he consistently communicated with us, he let us know if anything was going to take a little bit longer than expected. Everything was amazing from the appetizers to our entrees and the drinks. My favorite appetizer that we got was the cauliflower, and I got the catfish in grits for my entree. And for my drink, it was a margarita. It did not take long for the food to come out of the kitchen.Everything was fresh and a nice portion size. There is parking nearby and we are fortunate to find a spot. But you may have to park a little way down, because it is in downtown Houston. I will definitely come back next time. I'm in town.
The menu is definitely on the pricier side for what you're getting, but the food and drinks do taste good. Service was good, our waiter was nice and we were checked on often. It was quite busy the night we went, so it was going to be loud no matter what, but the music was even louder which made just about everyone needing to yell to talk to the people at their table.
Not bad... but they charge for EVERYTHING! Came in with a group for a happy hour catch up! The hostess was extremely friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Shout out to them for setting the tone right. I could easily see this place getting a bit chaotic for brunch on the weekends for sure. Okay, back to the charge for everything... so they run a pretty solid happy hour menu that has $5 lemon drops and $5 fried cauliflower. Which is cool. But as you're ordering and the server asks "what sauce do you want" and "which flavor do you want," your mind goes to "cool of them to ask about a flavor and a sauce." But then of course the bill comes and you see an extra $4 for the watermelon flavor on the lemon drop and another $4 for the Nashville honey hot sauce the cauliflower was tossed in. Now... both the lemon drops and cauliflower were FIRE... just did not expect the charge, if that makes sense. Overall, try out and rate it... I'll be back, and mentally prepared for the extra charge lol. Last nugget... they will only split a tab 4 ways when you're with a large party. You've been warned .
This restaurant was really good. Visited on a Wednesday afternoon so it wasn't super busy! The restaurant sits on a corner so we had a nice view of downtown! The food was so good! Steaming hot! If you like soul food then you would love this place!! I got a plate with fried catfish, yams, fried okra, white rice and gravy, and a waffle cornbread!! I would like to come back to try the waffles!! Thank you for a great experience!
I was craving brunch in the afternoon. Taste Bar + Kitchen was featured in multiple instagram videos. So I decided to give it a try today. The vibe was definitely Brunch at 4pm. I was able to sit at the bar right away. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken & Cinnamon Toast Crunch Waffles. It was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy! The bartender/server was helpful and explained the Happy Hour selection. I tried the Uncle Nearest Peach Cobbler Frozen drink. It was really good. I was tempted to order another one. This will be my go to spot anytime I am in Houston!
I was really looking forward to getting some good using food or at least rendition of it, but I did not get that here. When I was sad and my waiter asked me if I wanted something to drink. I start off with just water which she brought out in a decent amount of time at that point I got my order taken, and I asked for the lemon drop, the cheeseburger slider, trio, and the dollar wings during happy hour in the Cajun fried flavor. My food came out in a decent amount of time and they were playing good music so that kept me occupied for a bit. The chicken wings were very basic. You can't even call them Cajun. There was a little bit of salt on it, but that's it. The sliders were actually pretty good. The meat was seasoned and they had some sort of sauce on it, that was tasty. Plus the buns were really soft. Where I rate them lower at is after I received my food. I didn't see my server, except to see other people and ask them what they wanted to drink and eat. I waited for about 20-30 minutes before I had someone get the attention of my server so that I could get a box and pay. Additionally, on top of some of the food being subpar it wasn't super hot and fresh, which was also disappointing. I tried them, but I won't be back.
Kierra!!! Such a friendly and fun server. She took great care of us. This isn't my first visit but I wanted to bring my sister. My first visit the service was lacking big time. But Kierra definitely made up for it. I ordered the catfish entree with Mac n cheese and added grits and greens. (Greedy I know) everything was great. Greens were a tad salty but still had great flavor and heat. Catfish was crispy and well seasoned. My sister ordered Cinnamon Toast Crunch waffles. She said they were so yummy. Overall this is definitely a go to spot. As long as the service stays consistent this is a win.
Came here the other evening for some cocktails and we heard they had a good happy hour...and they did! First of all you have to ask for Chance... the best waiter, he was attentive and funny... give him a raise! The cocktails were full-size drinks for happy hour at about $8 a drink...plenty of food options... from lamb chops to wings and loaded fries. This is a great place during the happy hour because it can be a little pricey for the regular menu. The restaurant itself is a vibe... they play good music have a nice ambiance. Will be back again.only thing that gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was it was a little slow... granted they were busy...but.
It's giving 5 star because of the vibes. The food is okay I love the cinnamon toast crunch waffle. Greens were sweet bring hot sauce or vinegar. Mac is okay add salt pepper and you good to go. Fried chicken was good with the rice and gravy but it needed more gravy which cost me $4 dollars. Service was good tho and he had some great suggestions we had CJ. Make sure you go here when you have money and not on a budget. This still one of my favorite spots lobster Gouda I recommend even tho I didn't get it this time

I was visiting Houston and just had to try the Taste Bar lol. The vibe was cute we got there as soon as it opened on. Monday and we were seated upstairs. It was pitch black up there. For date night or night out with the girls it's cute but early afternoon in the dark it was a little weird lol. Food: the waffles we were not impressed with at all. We had the red velvets and fruity pebbles waffles. They tasted more like little cakes than waffles. Ours were soft.. we didn't love it. The Mac and cheese we enjoyed! The collard greens were way too salty. Hard to eat and I enjoy flavor!! The fried chicken was delicious!! Definitely made the meal way better! It was the highlight of the meal! The drinks were just ok. Pretty for instagram but just ok to have. Service: the waiter was very nice but he got the checks wrong and charged me for my friends food . It was just ok for me. read more
Bayyyybeeee! When I tell you I seriously have been thinking about moving to Houston because of TASTE?!? Listen...I'm packing my bags NOW! Some of the flavors and menu items they have produced? No other like it! I have NEVER tasted shrimp and grits this dang good. I didn't even like shrimp and grits that much until I came here! It tasted just as fancy as it looked! The flavors, the creaminess, this succulent shrimp, the subtle smokiness of the bacon...everything you dream of and need! The chicken? BOMB! I hadn't had fried chicken in a long while so I really enjoyed this! The sweet potato waffles were good, but the cornbread waffle?! WOAH! Who would've thought?! I wish I could've ordered 20 of them! And that bacon Gouda macaroni and cheese? SCRUMPTIOUS! Everything was so good here, even the drinks. I'm already planning on going back soon...and yall. Taste Bar + Kitchen...*chef's kiss* Came here Friday around mid day and waited about an hour to be seated, so I can't imagine what it would be like during peak times/after hours. But the vibe was really cool as we waited and I'd definitely come back again because the food and drinks are amazing. I had the braised collard greens, lobster gouda mac & cheese, and ginger caipirinha and my taste buds were not disappointed. The braised greens were perfectly seasoned and so very very delicious. The mac & cheese was also very very good. It's a smallish serving, but please believe you get your money's worth in lobster. I easily could have eaten 2 servings and been completely satisfied. Can't wait to come back to Houston and eat here again. read more

We attempted to go on a Friday night , but 3 hour wait. We then attempted to do brunch on a Saturday morning , and it was a 2 hour wait. So, on Monday morning we arrived 20 mins before they opened and only had to wait additional 10 mins ! Needless to say, get there early! Food: THE LINE AND WAIT MAKES SENSE!! Everything was on point . I picked out the Nashville Hot Chicken and switched out the waffles for the Bacon Mac & Cheese! I don't even know where to start! It all came out hot and ready to consume! The chicken was perfectly seasoned and the Nashville Hot was hot, but in the best way! The Mac and cheese was the part that stole my heart y'all! It was may I say the best restaurant Mac and cheese I have EVER tasted. No lie. Cocktail : I picked out the Peach Cobbler dessert cocktail, and it took me by surprise! It was delicious and perfectly mixed! I'm usually not a big vodka girl, but it paired with their purée in such a way that it literally tasted like peach cobbler. My friend had the Hennessy Breeze which was also mixed well. She said "it did it's job" lol Service: Our server Gia was extremely friendly and attentive! She kept checking on us even after the meal came (y'all know some people leave you hanging at that point) . Also the hostess at the front was nice and welcoming! They also had a busser who kept our table clear of items we were finished with. Environment: Each area of the establishment gave a different vibe. We sat upstairs and it gave me nice jazz club vibes! I wanted to see what the hype was about this place. Anytime I tried coming here, there had always been at least a one hour wait. After dining here, I don't think this place is worth that long if the wait. The food didn't stand out as much as I thought it would. I will say I enjoyed the praline waffles but they were a bit too sweet for my taste buds (I felt like diabetes was kicking in). I did enjoy the cajun fries and the shrimp & grits though. Decent food. Nice Vibe. But not worth waiting hours for. read more
I had an amazing experience at this restaurant. From there being a waiting area with hookah, the vibe, the music, the drinks, and the food was hot fresh and tasty!!! Hospitality was terrific and service and music was wonderful. Best dine-in experience I've had in Houston all together by far. Strongly recommend!!! Amazing restaurant with an amazing concept. This establishment should DEFINITELY expand throughout Houston area! Only a very mild complaint/suggestion: I asked on their Instagram page how to make a reservation, they told me they did not accept reservations despite them being on opentable. Only if walk ins and to go orders. When I walked in I was asked if I had a reservation? Maybe a more clear policy regarding that. read more
Worth. The. Wait. Three and a half hour wait to be exact but I'll explain further down. First things first... food. My meal was amazing. They say you can't substitute the rice and gravy which was odd to me but now I SEE why. It brings the meal all together. The greens, bomb. The smothered chicken, bomb. The truffle mac and cheese, pretty good. The cornbread - shaped like a mini waffle, bomb. Put it all together... an explosion of soulful flavor. Pictures don't do this food justice...you have to try it. The Hennessy Breeze wasn't all that memorable but if you like sangria, I'd assume you would enjoy it. I was initially thrown off because when you call (and no one picks up) the message says that they don't take reservations... but then you pull up and see a line to find out it's to make a reservation - mmmk. At the time of our visit it was a 3.5 hour wait... I'm glad we had other plans to take take up that time but sorry to those who must have just landed, got dropped off by their uber and had their suitcases with them... It wasn't as packed as it was when we stopped by the first time, which was great. We were able to find street parking (read the signs) which saved money from using the valet. The bar was packed and the outdoor space was used for food and hookah. This is a spot that I highly recommend and would go back to. read more

My first visit and everything was amazing. I do suggest that you make reservations if you plan to attend Friday - Sunday. It requires a $50/person non-refundable deposit that's deducted from your bill; YOU WILL spend more than $50 a person. The experience was so good, I called over the Manager Boots to let her know how awesome the experience was for us. Mixed age crowd but great for GNO or date night!! read more
Let's start off by saying I will always buy the lamb chops. A friend ordered them as appetizers. And man they were the bomb. This dude James is one hell of a bartender. He made one of the best old fashioneds ever. Let's talk about the shrimp and grits -- for me not to like the dish in general , I was quite delighted. A very nice size of catfish. I would get lamb chops by themselves!!!! Unbelievable. The live band was amazing! FYI: there's a long long wait and if you're not there at the right time , you'll be disappointed. I am only giving them 4 stars because they need to get organized with their seating and reservations system. The food and vibes are too good and they should take reservations . 2.5 hours for wait is insane. read more
I met my friends here for the first time last week, and we really enjoyed our dinner. I immediately gravitated towards the chicken & waffles on their menu - there are so many options! I chose the Cajun chicken & waffles with dark meat and substituted the regular waffles for sweet potato waffles. My favorite part was definitely the chicken itself. It was crispy, well-seasoned, and so tasty! The waffles were a bit softer than I expected, but they had a great flavor. The service was great. Our waitress was very friendly and brought our food out quickly. The only thing keeping me from going back is the price - this was by far the most expensive variation of chicken & waffles I've ever ordered. Oh you haven't been to @tastebarkitchen Well that's on you! Just a #foodie with an #iphone Not a single filter. Was used last week for #sisterhood #giftexchange and we had a blast! I had the #twinlobster which comes with elevated Mac and cheese. But of course the #tasteofsoul is a hit for the #soulfood lover looking for a well rounded meal. Last pictures is one of many variations of an order of the #chickenandwaffles, their original dish! Welcome to Houston. Btw this is maybe my fifth time here. Week before I was also here late Saturday after myself and two friends spent a day shopping. That time I was upset to find out there were out of almost everything. I've added pictures from both experiences. I would give 5 stars but i feel they can't do better with the wait times, accuracy of the wait times, and clarity on the live music options and going upstairs. I believe every time I've gone has been on a night that they would have live music but my party has to wait because everything downstairs and outside is full and we are told that the upstairs is not yet open however one time where I try to bring family members much later or people are going upstairs I was told that they are no longer serving food or that upstairs is packed . read more

The process to getting a table for brunch was a lot. They weren't taking reservations so a few people in my party came when they first opened to stand in line and still had to wait a considerable amount of time to have their name placed on the list. Waiter was friendly and funny. Food left a lot to be desired. Had the bacon & lobster mac & cheese. Was ok, pretty dry for mac & cheese. Tried one of my friend's waffles. Cinnamon Toast Crunch waffle was probably the best thing I ate. Had two flavors of mimosa carafes- one blue, one pink, can't remember the names. Both mimosas were weak and barely tasted like they had any champagne added. read more

I visited Taste Bar for the first time this past weekend on a dinner date. We got there around 8pm and it was not too packed. We were seated quickly. The waiters/bar tenders were friendly and helpful with making suggestions and discussing the menu. I really enjoyed my dinner and drinks. I would like to return back during brunch hours. I would definitely recommend Taste Bar + Kitchen. :) read more
So I must say this was the best shrimp and grits I ever had! Environment was very nice. All the employees had mask on. Great customer service. Highly recommend this place! They had a patio area to sit outside or u could stay inside with an upstairs area. Definitely will come back to try other food options. Drinks were good too! This PLACE WAS AMAZING. Everything was on point and the service was immaculate. Missy greeted us with a smile and welcomed us for the 1st time. MIKAYLAH was amazing. PLEASE ASK FOR HER AS YOUR SERVER. The food was amazing, succulent and tasty. Your money is worth every penny. We had the Fried lobster and fish and grits with smoked Gouda mac n cheese. The ambience is great with soulful Music for your ears. COVID -19 precautions in place. I observed MIKAYLAH place gloves to obtain straw for drink and she also removed gloves for the next guest. NEW LOCATION 420 Main St. Houston Tx. My daughter HIGHLY recommended Taste for brunch, and we were not disappointed!! My meal : Fried lobster tail/ shrimp grits. Wife's meal : lollipop lamb chops, with a side of bacon cornbread waffles and bacon mac n cheese. With a cotton candy cocktail Everything EXCELLENT and the cocktail definitely was not watered down !! I will add that Taste is fine dining and a bit pricey, but worth every cent !! I give this fine establishment a 10 out of 10 read more

It was first time coming to Taste Bar + Kitchen and I had a good experience. The atmosphere was really nice and the service was good. I came towards the end of the night so a lot of food options weren't available. I ordered the chicken and waffles and it was really good. Next time I plan to try the shrimp and grits. Parking is a bit of a struggle but not that bad. read more
I was so excited to try Taste and it did not disappoint! If you're looking for a vibe, this is your spot. The music and ambiance is on point! I ordered the cajun chicken and waffles (2 pecan and 2 cinnamon) and my oh my was it delicious. The chicken was well seasoned but not too salty. The waffles were honestly just so good. Everyone at the table loved their meal. I heard from someone in the group that the mac and cheese was on point too. Oh and our server was great too! Cons: We got there at 10:55am on a Sunday (they open at 11am) and the line was down the sidewalk. We didn't get seated until around 1pm (party of 5). They only take reservations for parties larger than 10 and you have to call 2 weeks in advance. They've really got to get their reservation system together. Even though I enjoyed it so much, I don't think I'll be back until the wait would be under an hour. read more

This was an amazing experience for me. I got the fried lobster with regular waffles. 10/10!! They were absolutely amazing!! I'm so happy in the inside. For my drink I got the watermelon telly frozen 10/10 again!! My heart is full. The waitlist is no joke though. Get on it. My server Courtney was amazing! For sure ask for him if he is there. Had a great experience start to finish! I will say this, after eating here the hype is definitely worth it. I was seated outdoors on the patio at a high top. We were greeted by Missy who showed us to our table and repeatedly checked on our table while there. She gave some background on the restaurant and made some menu recommendations - she started off the experience on a positive note. Our server was also excellent as well. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and courteous. He also made some menu suggestions including the Hennessy sangria drink is started with (highly recommended). There were so many options on the menu I had a really hard time choosing but settled on the catfish and grits & specialty waffles. I had red velvet and peach cobbler waffles and they both tasted great. The catfish and grits was also seasoned very well and the portions were right on. I plan to visit again in the future and try many more items on the menu. I suggest you add this to your list! read more

Nice chill spot.... I made reservations Saturday afternoon for later that evening and luckily got in. The wait wasn't long either, waited 10 mins and then our table was ready. The place is small, making for a very intimate atmosphere. They have plenty of outdoor seating along with hookahs available. They have valet as well as security/officer on stand by. Upstairs is a stage for performance's their music was good. The atmosphere is definitely a great one to start off a girls night out. Which is what we were doing. The drinks are how I like my men good, sweet, and strong af! loved the cotton candy drink as well as my taste of soul plate. I will definitely be returning. read more
I love taste. One of my favorite restaurants in all of Houston. You have to get a reservation! The food is always good, and that's coming from someone who has had almost everyone on the menu. For drinks my personal favorites are the lavender blueberry margarita and the B.O.L.D martini. For food, I love the Taste of Soul and Shrimp an Grits! read more

Great drinking spot. The apple pie martini is perfect. Service was a bit slow though. For our appetizer, we ordered the Cajun fries. This dish was underwhelming, as more fries come in a medium McDonald's fry order. Although the portion was small, the dish was good. We got the Nashville Chicken and Waffles as our entree with a side of Gouda Mac n cheese (it was a small bowl for the most part). These dishes were well made and it was very filling. If the service was faster and the portions were bigger (mainly the appetizer of fries), this place would be closer to 5 stars. Be sure you check it out at night, the vibe is great! read more

Chicken and waffles here are BOMB!!! I LOOOVEE savory so I got one cornbread waffle (highly recommend) and one biscuit waffle (idk if it was a miss bit it was SUPER hard - I do not recommend) Also it's so neat you can order white or dark meat for your chicken whhaaattt! The host who helped us was SOO kind and patient !!! Especially since I changed my mind a billion times lol. Eventually I decided to sit outside since the weather wasn't trying to actively kill us.. and inside was a little doom and gloom. The drinks are all a hit too. They are Instagram friendly and bombastic. Valet only so bring your nice car (jk there's street parking in the back). read more
There are not enough stars to do this restaurant justice. I came to Houston for my birthday.. which is all of February lol! The last time which was the first Time... My friends took Me here I ordered chicken and waffles (amazing), but had a bite of their jerk lamb chops... I have not gotten over that bite since !!! Needless to say... the food is super flavorful! I didn't even have any food to take home. I recommend the tropical mimosa. I love blue drinks and this one was so yummy and sweet. Our server definitely went above and beyond with the accommodations. Definitely check the busy hours and get lab in advance - I ventured to this spot mid day on a Monday and still ran into a wait time if an hour. Ended up being seated at the bar upstairs which was a nice ambience for drink making in the bar center it definitely gave us attention and service that was to be expected. The food was tasty but I did expect more from the jerk chicken and waffles. read more

We had an hour wait, but the experience was amazing! Our server was AMAZING! She was so helpful, attentive, and overall amazing. A heads up (they automatically add gratuity to their bills). I ordered the popular lavender colored drink (it was good but not something I'd order or recommend to try at first thought) and the jerk lamb chops and Mac & cheese. And y'all it was soooooo good! Them lamb chops had a bit to it but it was so delicious and tender! I drank most of my husbands watermelon drink which was reallllyyyy good! Nevertheless the drinks were hitting! The Mac n cheese was good! But the price was a bit OD for the portion and taste. Ultimately, I would come back here again and would recommend people stop by here and give them a try. read more

They would have received 5 stars if I didn't have to wait for 2.5 hours for brunch. But..... it was so worth the wait (with a couple carafes of mimosas). The carafes are $25, they use a whole bottle of champagne and you have 4 or 5 flavors to choose from. The main event is the chicken and waffles. They have 5 types of chicken and waffles ( including lobster tail and waffles) and they are all delicious. I had the General Tso but they also have Nashville Hot and Jerk chicken. The waffles were soft, pillowy, delicious and you can add a variety of toppings like cinnamon toast crunch. Both the chicken and the waffles were equally great and the hardest part of chicken and waffles is getting them both right which Taste did masterfully. I also ordered a side of mac and cheese which was also pretty good. I appreciated that the owner or manager walked around with free glasses of mimosas due to the wait. That was a decent way to offset the inconvenience of the wait. read more
Saturday brunch around 11am. About an hour and a half wait. But nice outside seating area. Had great drinks while we waited. After being seating upstairs in the balcony, we ordered a carafe of the Sangria - the best I've ever had. Ordered general, regular and one other one, all were really good. The collard greens were amazing! My fave here. The lobster Mac was great! Good vibes overall, great waitress, and I would say it's worth the wait (if u have time). read more

Try to make a reservation but if you can't I would get there before they open. At LEAST 20 minutes before.

Yes and I suggest you make a reservation otherwise it's hard to get in.

No and their answering machine says you can get on the waitlist via Opentable - it never worked, just said "unavailable at this time".

Yes! They have a vegan chicken (fried cauliflower) and waffles with gluten free waffles. I believe there were one or two more gf options but that was the one that I specifically remember :)

Yes they have music playing. Yes, there is a brunch menu that you order from. There are combos that you can mix and match and you can also add things individually. The dinner menu doesn't come out until after brunch. Hope this helps!
