Really cold Saturday afternoon in Astoria. Me and the gf are thinking about sipping on something tasty and warm before heading to the MOMI nearby. We both agreed to go back to our favorite bubble tea place in NYC, Tea and Milk. When you walk in, it isn't hard to notice how tiny the space is. The tiny aspect gives it a nice intimate feel when there aren't that many people there. We stared up at the interesting menu. There was a moment of indeciveness, and the cashier was kind enough to offer to make a recommendation. However, we did make a decision, and the cashier quickly took our orders. Our drinks were made relatively quickly, and the flavor for each of them exceeded our expectations. Unlike other bubble tea products, the flavor isn't overwhelmed by sugary syrup, which is why we both really like this place. If ever in Astoria, I highly recommend checking this place out. I lived just around the corner from Tea and Milk and ordered from here a handful of times. I thought their drinks were just ok. I've dried a few varieties from their menu, but I don't think any of the drinks wowed me. I keep thinking the next flavor I try will be the one, but that was never realized. The only thing that I thought was above average was their Thai Tea, which is pretty basic in terms of flavors. I love boba places where you can taste the tea and isn't overpowered by milk and this place does it best so far. Ordered: Jasmine Milk tea with boba: was recommended 50% sugar instead of my regular 30% and it was a great recommendation! You can really taste the tea and the sweetness & chewiness of the boba really makes the drink pop out. Third visit: Iced taro milk tea with boba. Their taro is IT! Had this with 75% sugar and it was so good! I love the natural texture and flavor. I don't think I can go back to the artificial purple stuff after this. My mom had the lavender black tea with extra cream and she liked it. I tasted some and it had a nice lavender flavor that really complemented the tea. Also want to say the customer service was really good today! Small and comfortable little shop. Board games available if you want to hang out with friends. The staff are really nice and gave me a sample of tea when I asked a question about the Lady Grey. Definitely come to try the Taro Root Milk Tea, perhaps even over the regular milk tea. It's not that starchy garbage taro powder that other stores use. The texture derived from the taro root purée gives it more of a uniform thickness, which would make you believe that corn starch or some other thickener had been used if you hadn't watched them make the drink. An interesting and pleasant drink that can be easily enjoyed with reduced sugar. The Nilgiri Blue Mountain Milk Tea did a good job of not overshadowing the tea with milk, while still allowing the strong tea flavour to permeate, as well as maintain a high level of creaminess. I was not a big fan of the tapioca pearls, however. It added a lot of extra sweetness to the drink and was softer than my personal preference, but others may enjoy this texture. I was not sure what the Lady Grey was supposed to be. If it were a milk tea containing Earl Grey, it didn't do too good of a job. There wasn't an adequate amount of half-and-half and the drink was not at all creamy. If it were supposed to be a variation of Earl Grey similar to how people in the UK have their tea, the vision wasn't seen through properly. The tea was diluted with water and there still wasn't enough milk. The tea, undiluted was standard. This is definitely a place where you need to come more than once. Not because it is extraordinarily good, but rather because the sugar levels of the drinks vary so drastically. A 70% sugar Lady Gray is significantly less sweet than a 20% sugar Taro Root Milk Tea or 50% Nilgiri Blue Mountain. It's all very confusing and might require extensive experimentation, but I'm sure that it'll pay off in the end. read more

They sell tea, tea leaves, and pastries. There are tea leaves on a shelf which they encourage you to open and smell. The teas cost more than other bubble tea shops, but their quality is higher. I first discovered these guys about a year ago doing their bubble tea thing at both the Astoria and LIC flea markets and was hooked immediately. Sure you can you stick to your generic places that do all powder based teas for relatively cheaper prices, but this place offers something different. Each tea is craft and uses distinct ingredients so you really taste them fresh. The menu here is smaller only because they specialize in what they offer. Came with my friend Cynthia D to meet up with our fellow yelpers Jean Claire, Roger H, Ron L + Abelle N, Gerardo A to celebrate Tea and Milk's One Year Anniversary. I really wanted to try their Taro Milk as I read many reviews about it since I can't drink caffeinated beverages like all the delicious bubble teas....I know #majorbummer. This is my second time visiting but finally popping my long waited Tea and Milk cherry ::wink::! Tea and Milk is definitely an A+ in my book as their ingredients are fresh not powder compare to the other bubble tea shops. The owners ordered many pies from Fat Cat which was a few doors down for their One Year Anniversary pizza party from 12pm-2pm today. We were the first to get a slice of the pizza and it was definitely very cheesey after each bite mmmm. Jean Claire was a sweetheart to order me and Cynthia's Taro Milk and she got the other popular drink Oolong Tea with Cream. Mmmmmm the Taro Milk was very delicious along with the tapioca balls and I literally hold the cup in my hand as it was too delicious to put it down on the table. This place is a hidden gem! We don't really come to this area because we live far from here. We had dinner close by and found this place after. All of the drinks we ordered were so good. Sweetnesses were on point for all the them. I got the unsweetened taro root milk tea and it was not the usual taro milk tea you had elsewhere. Their taro root milk tea was creamier and rich. I was invited to celebrate the first anniversary of Tea & Milk. They have the option of hot or cold bubble tea. This was the first time that I test the hot bubble tea, I order the taro hot bubble tea which was delicious and creamy, is made with real taro so it's not purple (surprise for me) the staff explains to me, that the tea didn't have any artificial colouring, that went I saw any taro bubble tea that has a purple color is because it had an artificial colouring, so this one was 100% natural. The staff to celebrate their anniversary ordered a few pies of pizza from Fat Cat that is a few doors down from here, so those that walked that day into this tea spot had the option to have a slice of pizza with their beverage. This has gotta be one of my favorite new Bubble tea places. The menu is very unique which makes it difficult to select a tea. Don't be fooled by the small storefront, they are working magic behind that counter! Workers were very kind and helpful offering suggestions. Initially I came here based on a friend's recommendation. We came to try the taro root drink which I heard was prepared fresh with real taro. Unfortunately upon trying to order, I could not substitute the milk portion with almond milk (they premake the taro portion with the milk so it is already mixed in), which bummed me out a little. I had to go back to the drawing board and stare at the menu until I found something I could have substituted. My eyes fell to the seasonal section which is always a fun and exclusive section of the menu that it gives me FOMO if I don't try anything there. Will it be there the next time I visit? Lord no, I am not leaving this to chance! The matcha kit kat tea caught my eye. I ordered it hot with almond milk and bubbles. There was a yelp check in offer (10%off) and payment via credit card was speedy. If you want a little snack with your tea, there are cookies or croissants too (see below the register counter to view the selection). Flavor of the matcha was strong and authentic; it mixed well with the almond milk and sweetness of the kitkat. It was a symphony of slightly bitter matcha with creamy warm almond milk ending on a sweeter note and finishing with soft delicate tapioca pearls! The only downside is the lack of seating and the lack of more options for those who are lactose intolerant. I was eyeing the green tea cheesecake croissant but that surely contained milk in it. They have a suggestions jar so feel free to share ideas for improvements. The line moves fast and the customers are constantly pouring in. They also offer gift cards. Honestly, the reason I haven't moved out of Astoria for the last 5 years is because I live near this place. Lol. But it looks like I may be moving this summer, so it's time to write a long review before I go. Best. Bubble. Tea. In. New. York. And probably the tri-state area. I say this as someone who was born and raised here, has tried every single bubble tea in the 5 boroughs, and is extremely picky about quality ingredients. This place is THE BEST. Not only do they use high quality ingredients in their classic flavors (taro, milk tea, Chai, etc), but every season they come correct with brand new concoctions and seasonal flavors. I never thought I could taste fresh strawberries in a delicious matcha drink, but they're here to prove me wrong. I love, LOVE the classics, but every once in a while I want a KitKat matcha drink. Over the last few years I've probably had every single flavor on their menu, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've never had a bad drink here. Even their eggnog one was good, and I hate eggnog! What I really love is that they let you add your own level of sweetness, because I don't love drinking straight up sugar water. I just want a hint of sweetness, or sometimes just no sugar at all so I can taste the tea itself. But if you love sugary tea, don't worry they will make it sweet for you if you ask for it! And then at some point last year they added banh mi sandwiches to the menu, and I was skeptical at first, but even these are pretty damn good!! They briefly had a shop near my office in midtown, and I was thanking the lord, but it was only for a short period. After my earlier review and how it was nuts and just kind of meh. I got a message from one of the owners with an offer to try again risk-free. I went a few weeks later when it was a lot quieter and definitely not as hectic. I ended up getting the hibiscus with chia-but they were out of chia and I was recommended the grass jelly instead. The lady also got an iced coffee which was also gratis. She enjoyed hers and I really did enjoy my hibiscus tea. I went back again recently to try the green tea this time and it was pretty good-they had chia but I think I prefer the hibiscus or the oolong better. The taro root milk tea tastes real, not like the purple stuff at other places. When I get bubble tea elsewhere, it sometimes has this detergent-y fake aftertaste and feels like I could burp bubbles. None of that here. The taro root tea was not too sweet tasting. The tapioca pearls are done well and seemed smaller, which I liked. The taro did have a thicker consistency so I can see how that could put some people off, but I didn't mind at all. I do feel like the taro tea wasn't as cold as I would have liked but maybe that's because it's more natural instead of being powder + mostly water/ice. I have also had the rooibos fruit tea here too which is solid. Unlike some people I know, I'm no Bubble Tea addict. In fact, most of the time, I wind up drinking it by chance because my kid is crazy about the stuff. Invariably, it winds up being too sweet and fake tasting. Then a little birdie, or should I say, Fox insisted that I try the Bubble Tea from here. Something about it being made with all-natural ingredients and such. Well, alrighty then: So yeah... After a bit of angsting, I settled on an Iced Dark Roasted Oolong. "It's a a great choice," reassured the friendly counter person. She also advised me to go with no sugar at all when I explained my deep seated loathing for overly sweet drinks. "You can always add sweetener if you need it," she elaborated. I decided to add boba and some 'signature cream' too, which fwiw, cost extra. The verdict: Well, the boba, which were perfectly soft and chewy, were lightly sweetened, plus the so-called 'signature cream,' was also subtly sweet... So between these two, and the distinctive flavor of Roasted Oolong, my drink tasted nicely balanced. Next time I'd probably get a bit less cream to allow more of the Tea to pop through, but otherwise, this was just lovely. My erstwhile food crawl partner-in-crime, hubby, started with some hot Masala Chai Tea. This was way too sugary for me. From what I understand, it's pre-made. I wish they offered the option to customize the sweetener with this too. But all was not lost, 'cause then hubby ordered an Iced Genmai Rooibos with 'signature cream.' I don't even like Rooibos, but I enjoyed this! At one point, we asked what the deal was with the 'signature cream.' We were told it contained dairy and sugar. But beyond that, it was implied that the ingredients were proprietary. As in, "if we tell you, we'll have to kill you." Am completely paraphrasing for comedic purposes, mind you. One of our communal tablemates was drinking what appeared to be Fuji Apple Green Tea with Chia Seeds. That looked great too. Indeed. If all Bubble Tea was like this, who knows? Maybe I'd be standing in front of a group of people declaring, "My name is Yael and I'm a Bubble Tea addict.:) ps That same, uh Fox who told me about this boba shop would probably have a field day with the phrase 'signature cream.' This place is a gem in Astoria! At least two people recommended this place to me. My friend was raving to me about their taro milk tea. The signature taro milk tea is very different from the other shops. If you're a fan of super Asian desserts, you should get this! They use actual taro and puréed it into the drink and it reminds me of a Cantonese dessert taro sago/ taro tapioca. Other shops use taro powder which gives the drink a very unnatural purple color and flavor is usually very overwhelming. I usually get sick of it 3/4 way through. I got the Tea and Milk signature taro in less sweet with boba. The drink was just the right amount of sweet for me but get regular sweet if you have a sweet tooth. The boba was also soft but with a bit of chewy. However, the drink is quite filling and I don't recommend it after a large heavy meal, but I drank it all anyways. Definitely didn't expect it to be a place with no seating when I found it on Apple Maps, but it wasn't of any concern to me because I was just gonna get a drink to take out. Unfortunately while the medium lychee green tea with aloe that I ordered tasted pretty legit (I could actually taste the green tea and the lychee flavoring wasn't overpowering) it wasn't worth the $6.64 price tag. You can get a large lychee green tea with great, chewy boba from Tenren Tea for a flat $6. Side note, I felt pretty sick in the thirty minutes after drinking the tea, which I could only attribute to the aloe I had. It was just weird because I've never gotten sick from bubble tea in my life. So overall kind of a 2.5 star experience. Might come here again to try a different drink but I won't be getting any toppings just in case. read more

I LOVE Tea and Milk with all my heart. I was shocked to move to Astoria a few years ago and discover that the bubble tea place a few blocks from me was the best I had ever tasted. When I moved to a new apartment in the same neighborhood, I literally made the choice based in part on the walking distance to Tea and Milk. I almost always give in and get the Brown Sugar Oolong because it's my favorite, but the Matcha and Thai Tea are also absolutely incredible. The Matcha has literally turned around a bad day for me, and I was beyond happy when they added the Thai Tea to the permanent menu this past year. Another huge plus: endless milk choices! I must say I have fallen hard for oat milk, and Tea and Milk was one of the first places in the area to start offering it! Over $5 for a large earl grey tea (not latte). An outrageous rip off. Tea was old, steeped far too long and lukewarm at best. When I asked for more milk Nicole told me she was too busy. She also was giggling as she added milk. Upon putting it on the counter a good amount spilled all over. Never plan on giving further business. Expensive, gross tea and a rude staff member. I visited your establishment exactly 2 weeks prior and wasn't charged over $5. The tea tasted great then and was the right temperature (the gentleman even asked me). I am quite the tea drinker and know a fresh, high quality tea. THIS WASN'T HIGH QUALITY OR WARM ENOUGH. Nicole was very rude to me and told me she was too busy to add milk. As my picture clearly shows, she spilled the tea and failed to clean it up and offer me a dry cup. You glossed over this fact, so I guess you're ok with that.
