Delicious! This is one of my places to rave about when I tell someone they have to try something new in Dallas. We had no idea what to order and we were sitting at the bar, so we definitely got a great experience. The bartender listed a couple of the popular items, his favorite items and we went from there. Pork belly- sooo tender, great flavor. I thought the white seaweed salad with it's description would be eh, but surprisingly super light and just the right kind of taste that made your chopsticks grab for just another bite. The soba noodles we tried were good but not amazing, but my friend went back for the bolognese and said those were tasty. We had smelled this during my visit and they even smelled good. This place used to be good. Not sure what happened. Brought some out of town friends here for an omakase experience. For $200 plus tax and gratuity that we had to prepay, we were expecting a delicious meal. What we were served was mediocre at best. Our first course was beautiful to look at and contained wagyu carpaccio on a disk of fried noodles. We were told to pick this up and eat it like a pizza. Unfortunately, this disk disintegrated on first bite. Following this, we were served a sashimi course, which was good but something you can get at any sushi joint. Next we were served grilled toro along with a side of salty, greasy fried brussel sprouts. First of all, why would you ruin a perfectly good piece of toro by cooking it beyond recognition? But we quickly realized it may have been that the toro was past its prime as this was the most fishiest and inedible piece of toro we have ever tasted. Next we were served a grilled wagyu steak with gummy truffled mashed potatoes. Our final savory course was the soba platter with a variety of sauces. I had high expectations for this as this restaurant is known for its soba. Once again, disappointed. The only saving grace of this meal was the soba flavored ice cream at the end. If you want a good sushi meal for your money, you will have better luck at Nobu, tei tei, or Uchi read more

My co-worker and I went to Tei-an last night. I ordered sashimi chef's selection, which was very good. Fish was fresh. The tempura was artfully presented. However, I am pretty disappointed with the hot soba. My coworker and I both got the noodles with soup and we were both disappointed. I would still give the restaurant 4 stars if the service were good. The wait staff don't seem to know the menu well, and this is after talking to 2 wait staff. What I expect from fine dining is that the waiters/waitresses go over the menu briefly and emphasize the restaurant's highlights with recommendations. But no, they just give you the menu and you are on your own. And when we asked them for recommendations, they seemed to lack enthusiasm in selling their products, saying things like "it really depends on what you like". Okay! Really helpful. After finishing our entrees, the waiter came and ask "would you like anything else?". What I expect from them is to present the desert menu without being asked and brag about your desert because the soba ice cream was good. Come on, up sale guys! Common sense! You don't like money? May be I expect too much. I would recommend the restaurant to re-train all your staff and make them learn the menu, please. While you have good food, the service is equally important. read more

OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE!! The service is impeccable. It is really like a high end Japanese restaurant but at pretty reasonable prices. I had the tonkatsu pork, the soba sampler, and the mochi and red bean dessert and my meal totaled only $34 before tip and tax. So reasonable for all I got. Like other reviewers said, make sure you make reservations beforehand so you get a table. We didn't, and sat at the bar area which really wasn't too bad to be honest. The bar has this very relaxing fountain in the middle. Of course, order the soba. I ordered the soba sampler and LOVED the texas pecan sauce. I also love how they let you pour in the soba broth into your favorite sauce at the end to drink. It was heavenly. The tonkatsu pork was one of the best I've had - although it could be improved if they offered curry tonkatsu! The mochi ice cream was wonderful, but at $8.50 it was a little pricey. I will say, however, that it wasn't just the food that was spectacular here, but the service. I love how they put paper thin coasters before placing your spoons down, and how they ask you if you'd like a black napkin instead of a white one if you're wearing darker clothing. These are all aspects of high end restaurants that I have grown to love (I travel a ton for work) but never expect from an asian place for some reason. The two other people I came here with thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well and I am a little saddened that I don't live in Dallas now because I would love to bring my husband and my friends here. We went to Tei-an for our wedding anniversary. The food was delicious and the staff was knowledgeable and recommended some great choices as well as sake options to fit what we wanted. The food was delivered fast and everything was amazing. The white seaweed salad is a must, I could eat it all day, every day. The sushi was some of the freshest I've ever had and the soba was superb. Finishing the meal with the soba ice cream and black honey was just the cherry on top of a perfect meal. We will definitely be returning in the future. read more

I hardly ever give 5 stars but this place was great in so many ways. First the bad. The waitress was unfriendly and does not seem interested in her job AT all. Okay and the bad is over lol The food was delicious and unique. Simple but well thought out (and fresh). My husband worked in food sales and he said the owner really goes all out to get fresh stuff. Very Japanese-like with its dim-lighting and cool setting and oriental sounds. I loved it all. The food is expensive but totally worth it, and of course, the reason you should be there in the first place. I had heard that the noodles were their specialty, so I went with the curry Udon noodles. Absolutely to die for. The broth was salty and spicy, with the large flat wheat noodles to compliment it. I ate most of it with chopsticks for the experience and to enjoy it slowly. Can we talk about delicious? Tei An, located at One Arts Plaza, is just that. Along with their everyday menu, full of tempting choices, the restaurant offesr a long list of daily specials. The choices can be a bit overwhelming, but the staff is very helpful and allows you to comfortable wait and take your time making up your mind. However, the house specialty was the clear choice for me--soba noodles. I tried the soba with tofu. It was not only great to eat, it was great to look at. The food is simply, yet beautiful. That is a theme you will find throughout the restaurant, from the bar to the main dinging are (which offers bar and individual table seating). My partner in crime had the soba with duck. He was in heaven! They also have an array of desserts to tantalize the taste buds. The service was great from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave, even on a busy Friday night. Ka-ching: The prices are reasonable, though there are some pricier options from which one can choose. We paid about $40 for our meal, including the tip. Best sushi I've had in TX. As far as Dallas goes, Tei-An and Yutaka are in a league of their own. This last time I went for dinner, I had three rolls - scallop, spicy tuna, and salmon. These are steep at $15 each, but once you taste it you won't care. These rolls are pressed - rice, a trace amount of wasabe, and the freshest fish you'll find anywhere. Not maki rolls like the ones you'll find rolled in seaweed at other places. Hell, even the mini salad that adorns each plate was delicious. My friends got 2 pressed rolls each, and were left very satisfied and full. They have your standard Japanese beer selection - I had a Kirin Light and the others had Saporro. On previous visits here, I've had the udon (only about $10 and will blow away any other udon you've had) and an assortment of other rolls. All were just the same quality that I experienced this last time around. Consistency is great. I really wanted to go up to the rooftop lounge, which has an up-close view of the downtown skyline. Due to the proximity, it's a different take then what you'll find at the Belmont or Nylo Southside. However, there was a private party renting the space out for the evening so I didn't get to take that view in. I'll be back for it though ... There's self parking in surface lots for $5, or you can also valet for $5 w/validation. If you really want to avoid that, you can park somewhere on Arts Plaza (very limited parking on that street) for free. Although if you're going to sweat about the parking cost, I'm guessing you're probably not in a hurry to get to Tei-An either. read more

As a fairly intelligent guy, their menu is probably the most confusing I've seen. That is after going their several times. The staff is very good at walking everyone through and doesn't try to upsell. I keep going back because the food is really good and very different than anything in Dallas. The sushi is good (spicy tuna is top notch and different than anywhere I've seen) but go for the noodle dishes. The soup bowls are excellent. Great flavor. A little expensive but worth it. The place was dimmed and quiet, which makes it intimate and great for conversations. Although, as my personal preference, I do prefer a more loud and lively environment. went for the first time with my gf and we absolutely loved it, first off I wasn't really happy with being seated on a corner away from my gf but we just scooted up closer and made the best of it. we tried several things on the menu, the sushi was absolutely on point. every bite melted in my mouth. then we tried the famous seaweed salad. the crunch was nice and a little on the acidic side for me but my gf thought she had found her new fav food. next we tried the a5 wagyu, it's expected with a $40 an ounce price that it was going to be sublime and it was, another thing on the menu id def recommend. we had the soba as well and i guess i ordered the wrong soba? i didn't like mine, but gf loved hers. then we finished it off with a dessert and it def topped it off for a great night. it was fantastic and i def recommend this place read more

It's been two years since my last visit to Tei-An, and I'm giving it the same rating. Solid Japanese food but nothing that I'm crazy about. This time, I tried the soy soup and ramen. AMAZING! Truly a class A restaurant. Hubby picked this for our once a month date not, and NICE going Geoff, nice going. The ambiance is classy and cozy, the service attentive but not annoying, and the food was DELICIOUS. We got a lot of food, lol but figured, hey we're there might as well. I had the 7 piece sushi, shared the pork dongkatsu, and i got the cold soba (plum radish) and the black sesame mousse. Everything was presented beautifully, minimalist Japanese way. Food was delicious, fresh, and real, nothing MSG or fake or over the top or anything like that, just simple and clean. OMG, the soba AND the black sesame mousse was like heaven, heaven! The black sesame mousse was incredibly buttery and beautiful, like sex in your mouth. My experience here was such a disappointment from the food to the service. I started off with one of the specials, Kyusyu Island whitefish crudo. It was dressed in a sauce that overpowered the fish and tasted exactly like Kraft Italian dressing. At $26, I was expecting something amazing but this dish was clumsy and amateurish. I also had the shiitake mushrooms which were uninspired. For my main, I had the tonkotsu ramen. I was reluctant to order it because while it is one of my favorite things to eat, I didn't think it would reach the greatness of Ippudo in New York. I was right and not only that, I found it to be very bland. I was seriously striking out. My boyfriend fared better because he really liked his white seaweed salad, poached egg and soba sampler. I had some of the soba and it was excellent. I definitely had a bit of ordering envy over that one! Service was oddly paced and a bit awkward, not what one would expect at a restaurant of this caliber. I would go back, but only to sit at the bar and have some soba. read more

After reading the Yelp reviews and seeing the pictures, I thought the food would be awesome. I was so disappointed! First, the food was decent. I ordered the washu beef on a hot stone, sea urchin risotto, a dinner bento box, soba sampler and the soba ice cream with black honey. The washu beef wasn't as tender as I hoped and they cooked it for you instead of giving you the option to cook it yourself. I didn't like the risotto but my bf did. It wasn't that flavorful in my opinion. The soba sampler was horrible. The texture of the noddle wasn't on point and all of the dipping sauces were awful. I'm so disappointed that the most basic dish turned out horrible. The soba ice cream was good but it's pretty much just overpriced vanilla ice cream with honey. Second, the service was good but not great. The hosts weren't that welcoming and the servers met the basic expectations. They didn't do anything special during my dining experience. The highlight of my experience here was going to the restroom. I know that is so sad!! They have a bidet instead of the normal toilet and ice in the sink to wash your hands. I thought that was very unique! Overall the food sucks and majority of it was overpriced for the quality of food I'm getting but the service and atmosphere was average so I'm giving them an average rating. read more

Another amazing eating experience adds the fifth star. I made sure to sit at the counter that frames their rock garden. Had to order the white seaweed salad again, but this time tried the flying fish sashimi (a daily special), which they served with fresh diced ginger (If you haven't tried flying fish, it has a fatty fish texture that lends itself well to dressing it up with diced ginger and scalions). Pricey, but uber-fresh and flavorful. This time I tried the sansei soba (japanese mountain vegetables in hot broth)-- wow. It sets you back $14 but... wow. The broth is not heavy but still somehow hearty and hits the spot..and of course, the handmade soba noodles are excellent as always. Oh, and if you come here for a birthday meal, the restaurant comps you a soba ice cream with black honey (plus candle!). Most of the other diners looked to be on business lunches, dressed professionally; my husband was in a t-shirt and shorts, whoops, but no one gave him a stinkeye about it. The food! We ordered: - Lunch bento box: White seaweed salad, some type of mushroom risotto, salmon sushi, fried chicken pieces, shrimp and vegetable tempure, and flavored rice. Everything was amazing, super flavorful and fresh. - Onigiri (rice balls): The rice was perfectly cooked!! And the fillings were delicious. - Fresh salmon & spicy tuna pressed sushi: Again, rice was perfectly cooked and the fish was very fresh and melt-in-your-mouth. - Mimoza: Grapefruit juice mimosa. My friend said it was perfect. Paid $85 for three of us, including tip and drinks, so pricey for lunch, but the food and ambiance were worth it. I haven't been for dinner, but I'd imagine that lunch is more low-key, contributing to our positive experience. A fan of Tei Tei, I was looking forward to going to Tei-An but somehow never had the opportunity. Today, the office was picking up the tab so I decided to finally give this place a try. I went with a coworker who claimed this might be his favorite restaurant in Dallas, so I deferred to his judgment when it came time to order. We started with white seaweed salad and some pressed sushi (spicy tuna and unagi). My friend was right: the white seaweed salad is "life-changing." Absolutely delicious. The pressed sushi was good, fresh, but nothing too special. Can't dock the place for that though - we weren't there for the sushi and we stuck to pressed sushi because part of our group wasn't big on sashimi. In any case, if you are looking for sushi, there are many better places to go. I've heard Tei-An's specialty is their noodles. I had never had soba noodles before, but they were great. We had a hot curry soba and a brisket soba and split between the four people. Our group was split on which we liked better, but it was close. After the noodles, we had some of their tea ice cream and what looked like a flan of sorts (we ordered a tiramisu, but weren't sure what we got). Dessert was pretty good, but nothing too special. All in all, Tei-An is a great place, and I might go back for lunch now that I know the menu is actually pretty reasonable. However, I'm more a fan of sushi than noodles, so until I have a hankering for soba, I doubt I'll be back. read more

Amazing. That's what I tell everyone when they ask me about Tei An. I've stopped by 3x now for lunch and dinner, and every time it has been fantastic. The interior decor is beautiful, cozy and intimate. The service is friendly and fast. Even during dinner when it was pretty busy, the waitress wad always polite, friendly and checked on us often. Best part: the food! -The Tonkatsu Ramen is drool-worthy, delicious, and at a great $10. Broth is not over salted, flavors have depth and you'll be satisfied when you finish your bowl... or attempt to! -The Sashimi Box or Jewelry Box is also a great deal. Lunch has a roll whereas dinner has sashimi. We loved the rice feature in the box & tempura! -Seiro rice box was something new and different for us, and just as delicious. I highly recommend the Eel. -The soba noodle menu is extensive with lots of options. We tried the dipping soba with duck broth. Deeelishus in the words of Donald Duck! Went there for restaurant week, which was a good deal for $49 for 3 course meal with starter, chef special, and entree. I went with the top recommended hits to play it safe, but regretted that decision later. The white seaweed salad starter was good, mostly because the dressing was tasty, but I'm not sure it merits the raves it gets. I think I wanted it to be a little more varied. The seaweed texture is nice, but I honestly would probably have enjoyed any salad with that dressing about the same. Sashimi was fresh and tasty, but the white fish was a little stringy and I didn't think the salmon was cut that well; it was uneven and ragged compared to the tuna that was cut perfectly. I don't know how that happened. Tuna was melt-in-the-mouth and lovely. The bolognese soba was seriously underwhelming. I really don't know what people see in it. I honestly would rather have Italian-style bolognese or Japanese-style soba. The party next to us agreed. It was just sort of bland compared to either original dish. I almost wanted to ask for a sprinkle of sea salt to give it more life. I don't know if something was off with their flavors bc of restaurant week? I can't understand its popularity other than people going to a Japanese restaurant and not actually wanting Japanese food. We added dessert, which was not included in the restaurant week menu. My friend loved the black sesame mousse, which was nutty and smooth, but lacked an oomph for me. I absolutely loved the soba ice cream with the black honey. That honey really is something special; I see why people buy just the honey to go. I even started eating the sesame mousse with it, and that made that dessert wonderful as well. Best thing I ate there. All in all, a mixed bag. Enjoyed my dinner but nothing other than the honey would be a repeat for me. I feel like I need to go back to try something else, would be interested in another soba or the tonkatsu ramen. One good thing is that the portions are pretty generous; we were very full at the end of the meal, which usually isn't the case for me with Japanese food. The decor and ambience is lovely, temperature was AC in the summer heat but not freezing cold like so many places, and the warmed toilet seats were fun. Oh, and PARKING is validated at the restaurant. Valet is $5 with validation, but you can just park yourself for free in the parking garage. Then take the elevator down to the lobby, say hi to security on the right, exit through the glass doors, and then head to the right where you reenter the building through the glass doors. I'll just review my most recent visit, since I don't remember my first one very well. One brief note about the first visit at the end of this review. I went to Tei An with a group of 10 last night. We were a little annoyed that they wouldn't split the check among the 5 couples, so that was not a great start. But the ambiance and hot sake made it better. A friend had raved about the ramen, so I knew I was going to order it. Nothing too adventurous in this review. The white seaweed salad was refreshing and delicious as everyone has already said. A shared shrimp tempura was wonderfully crisy, not overcooked, and the mayo-based sauce that accompanied it was perfect. I also ordered some sort of tempura mushroom that arrived not looking like mushrooms at all - very thin and stringy - juicy and delicious. The ramen was as good as my friend said it would be. At $10, it was one of the cheapest entree-type dishes. Everyone at the table loved it. One of my friends joked, "Is this like the stuff you get in the packet at the grocery store?" No way! Complex flavor, fatty pork to provide better flavor than something leaner, noodles of perfect texture. As one other reviewer commented, it is not quite Ippudo in NYC, which stands out as one of the best meals my foodie sweetheart and I have ever had, but it's not too far off the mark. And Ippudo's Ramen, as I recall, was more in the $20 range, just for comparison's sake. Dessert was chocolat with black honey - super boring - like a boxed chocolate cake with honey on top. Not recommended. Oh, and we had a perfect private room with a table for 12 (two canceled), and it would accomodate 16. Very nice to have our own private party atmosphere. The heated toilet seats with bidet options and dryer were a hit for our party. Although no one could figure out why my friend who ordered iced green tea got no ice in her glass, when the sinks in the bathroom were filled with ice! This same couple ordered a pork skewer appetizer and kept checking on it - it didn't arrive until everyone else was having dessert. If there were 1/2 stars, their predicament would be cause for reducing this review to 3.5. I will comment briefly on my first visit, where I had stir fried udon noodles and my date had hot soba. I did not care for the soba and have had waaaay better udon. At that time, I found it very overpriced. But I'm glad I went back. Oh, and there was a bit of confusion because they took my reservation for 5:45 but did not mention they open at 6 and were opening early for us. Very nice of them, but we almost changed restaurants when some arrived early and read the hours on the door, so not too bright not to let us know they were doing that. Went here for my birthday lunch yesterday with some coworkers. It was an experience for sure! The menu is a bit overwhelming, so ask questions! We got some rolls to start with. The Scallop Roll is AMAZING. Everything tastes so very fresh! This is a very traditional Japanese restaurant though, don't go expecting a huge selection of sushi, which is what I expected. Its known for its noodles. We each got a noodle dish which was very good. The green tea soba noodles were wonderful, the broth very flavorful and lots of meat. I'm wishing I had tried the Bento Box ($14 at lunch and it looked huge!) The table next to us got one and it looked wonderful. The Kirin on tap is a must have according to my coworkers.
