It was known for featuring noodles and did not have sushi.......NOW it Has Both. And it does both wonderfully! The chef, Teiichi Sakurai is a James Beard finalist. He brings authentic Japanese dishes to the menu and does not compromise in his delivery. You cannot and will not find better Japanese than at Tei An. Open your mind, and give these new favors and combinations a try. Or get California rolls, whatever. read more

Ate here on a late Thursday night. We were seated immediately, even though it was late the staff was still friendly and helpful. My boyfriend and I are pesceterians and found it difficult to order from the non-sushi menu. We had a few pieces of sushi which were fresh and delicious. The BEST!! It is the BEST place ive ever been to. Including any types or kinds of food i had in my life.. This place was the best out of all the restaurants I have ever been. Food. Yes it is VERY pricey. But!! It is totally worth the money. We started off with sashimi special. Fish.. super fresh..!! Bolongenes (?) This pasta was super good. The perfect amount of seasoning, perfect ratio of beef and pasta. Perfectly cooked pasta. It was awesome. Then the ramen. Oh lord. I tried many different japanese ramens before, this one beats everyone~~ The soup. Just indescribable soup! The best of best. Very VERY PRICEY. but must try. Miyazaki beef. Went to celebrate some personal achievements. Decided to try this place, had heard great reviews. The food was pretty great. We split some sushi, soba risotto (very dense and heavenly), tuna tartare, washu beef cooked on a hot rock, and ramen. All the food was delicious. The only knock was how long it took our server to come over to greet us. We had already chosen our food after reading the menu and specials over several times but still hadn't seen our server. Our server came over and asked if we were ready to order but I wanted to get a drink first. He was apologetic and service was great after that. The atmosphere is dim and romantic. I am indeed a fan. Unfortunately, this is an example of street food turned fine dining stateside that now it's served up at an expensive restaurant. The soba sampler with walnut dip was best. Best meal we've had in Dallas. Omakase An, while pricey for two, is a must. Every dish we had was superb except for the clams but I'm not generally a fan of clams so take that with a grain of salt. Rooftop bar has a great view of downtown. Only negative is that the bartender was a little snotty and rude. Guess that's due to the famous clientele they get judging from the wooden placeholders they keep handy for them. However, food was so great I can't ding them for this. read more

The items came out one at a time which helped you savor and fully enjoy the dish being served.They change out your plate each time they bring out a new dish so that the flavors don't get muddled together also. I really liked this! The atmosphere is cozy and intimate. We went on a Tuesday evening so it wasn't crowded and the waitress was very attentative. Their specialty menu changes daily, but here's what we had and how it fared in our opinion. - Premium sashimi platter: Fishes were fresh and delicious. The price was a bit steep for the amount of sashimi we received. - Sea urchin four ways (soy, ponzu, sea salt, and some other type of soy): Came out in a long glass cylindrical "tube" with four shot glass type cut outs at the top. The urchin was slippery and melts in your mouth. The sea salt flavor was interesting; and can't quite place the finger on what it was, but still good. The other flavors were great also! - 24 hours braised beef tongue with truffle mashed potatoes: OMG!! This dish was ah-mazing!! Another dish where the meat melts in your mouth, and the truffle mashed potatoes were a perfect compliment. You would have never guessed the beef was beef tongue. This dish tastes like a super flavorful pot roast. A must order when you come! - Spicy tuna: Very fresh and plentiful amount of tuna on top of the sushi rice. - Grilled toro: I was pleasantly surprised at how large this dish was! The fish is served with a grilled soy(?) sauce and grilled/fried(?) brussel sprout leaves. They were crunchy and complimented the fish wonderfully. It didn't even taste like brussel sprouts. Tei-An is probably one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants I've eaten at in the States. And, it seems that others agree - this place was packed at 9pm on a Sunday?! Food: The tuna sashimi with fresh wasabi was terrific, as was the hot rock Wagyu beef. The shumai was presented beautifully and the hot mustard took it ot the next level! The tempura was fairly standard, as was the edamame. Thought the agedashi tofu and the broccoli were a bit bland. Atmosphere: We sat at a bar area with several other couples, but still felt that we had some privacy. Thought the decor was quite pleasant and very relaxing. If you can get a table in one of the screened rooms, then definitely go for it! Restrooms: Ok, normally I wouldn't include this in my review, but the restrooms here are so cool. They have the automated toilets with heated seats just like you would have in Japan. Plus, the doors to the stalls are glass, but they fog up when you turn the lock. The sinks have ice in the basins. I mean, I would come to this place just to experience the restroom - weird, I know, but you'll understand when you see it. Definitely a solid restaurant that's worth checking out! read more

We went to Tei-An last week for dinner, and it was good - definitely a beautiful place in terms of ambiance. We had a variety of items from seaweed salad which was interesting in texture - to my favorite, the braised pork brisket. I definitely enjoyed dinner due to the ambiance, but overall the food was slightly underwhelming. Not sure if the food stuck to me enough to want to come back, but I would say that the ambiance is definitely worth going for. read more

Excellent service and great food. I wish I remembered the bartender's name but he was really courteous and helpful in selecting our sake and meal. Although I love traditional soba noodles, I really enjoyed the bolognese take on soba noodles. Chicken karaage and dumplings were great starters. About the food; Let me start by saying that I have heard that Tei-an was the best Asian food in DFW for 10 years and I had never been. The best Asian restaurant I had ever been to was Uchi in Austin and I must say that I was surprised to find that Tei-An was not nearly as delicious as Uchi had been. (I have heard that Uchi in Dallas is not as good, FYI). I ate a pork skewer appetizer that tasted exactly like jimmy deans sausage and I don't even eat that stuff and the waiter said it was very popular. lol. The signature shrimp dish that was fried with potato chips was the best thing I had of the night but it was way too heavy, like eating a bowl of chips with mayo and 3 or 4 large shrimp. Also had the grilled shiitake which tasted good but I've made better at home and i'm no expert chef. We also had some sort of fish liver in ponzu that was decent but a little fishy for my taste, my wife picked out that dish. The last dish was dessert and it was a buckwheat ice cream that was delicious but it tasted exactly like Honey Smacks brand cereal which I had not eaten since I was a child. Why do these dishes seem to be modeled after food you can buy from walmart?? Weird. About the drinks; I regularly drink at cocktail bars like Parliament so you can imagine my disappointment at the subpar drinks that I was served at Tei-An, meanwhile all the drinks were $14 or $15 each which is extremely high. The atmosphere is certainly incredible but I'm starting to get the sense that it's the only real selling point of this restaurant. Our server was very nice and helpful so service is not the problem. If you compare this restaurant to a place like Caracol in Houston then you'd quickly see that Tei-An, and for that matter nearly every restaurant in Dallas, is a joke and it becomes obvious why Dallas is not a true foodie destination. I say with a heavy heart. lol Overall I had a good time but food and drinks are not that great and everything is a little overpriced, especially drinks. read more

I tried to like this place like most of the reviewers, but I could only give it three stars. The white seaweed salad was definitely very good, but other than that it was pretty average. The smoked salmon was good, but the risotto was pretty heavy and a little bit too oily for my liking. I don't know why people rave about the decor. . Yes it is minimalist and a bit modern, but I wouldn't expect anything less for the area it is located in. Our server was ok, but seemed a little bit impatient when we asked about the menu...maybe it was an off night for her. Tei-An is one of the most unique restaurants in Dallas. Not your usual Japanese sushi restaurant. It has phenomenal homemade soba noodles and broths to dip the soba in as well as authentic Japanese dishes. Start off with the chamame (a nuttier and sweeter version of edamame) and the white seaweed salad. If they are offering it, try the milt sashimi (fish sperm sack) and monkfish pate. Besides the soba, the vegetables, seafood, and meat are all fantastic. It is a long and complex menu but everything is fantastic. Just make sure to bring friends so you can try more dishes. And make sure to finish the meal with the ice cream with black honey and a Japanese whiskey. read more

I went for dinner with a friend and she teased me for not having been here, but I told her sometimes it's nice to save some places for later. But I was glad later was now. I liked the layout of the place and the design. The noise level was actually pleasant with the amount of people in there. So we both had the soba sampler and shared some tempura along with a buckwheat pancake with seafood. I would definitely recommend the pancake, it's full of seafood and very tasty, perhaps a little salty, but it's nice. We also had some pickled veggies along with the soba. I wished the veggies had some more acidity, but that was about my only complaint. We finished with the soba ice cream with black honey. We both enjoyed it, the ice cream was very creamy and velvety. All in all a very good meal that I thought was pretty reasonably priced for the quality. I'll definitely be back. read more

I second the WHITE SEAWEED SALAD!! It was amazingly fresh, tasty, interesting, different... I loved it. Our waitress was brilliant. She patiently listened as we described in grunts what kind of sake we liked. In short, no clue. She asked leading questions and she picked out a lovely sake that was exactly what we asked for, not too sweet and cold. We did the shorter of the two tasting menus on a Sunday night at 8 p.m. - and I'm so glad we had a reservation because the place was full! Anyway, the white seaweed salad, followed by so many delicious surprises: the best pork dumplings I've ever had, kobe beef we seared on our own hot rock, delicate tempura, sashimi, sushi, and soba. (I know I oversimplified the courses but I'm a Japanese food tourist at best... so I'm not sure if my raves should be taken with a grain of salt or not.) The only thing that is even a remotely noticeable negative is the menu. And this is how unimportant it my complaint is... not the actual food but the presentation. It is rolled in a bamboo scroll that, when four people are attempting to unroll it, makes for awkward elbow bumping and rearranging of plates to fully peruse it. The waiter tried his best, but the menu...or should I say "menus" were too confusing. Overall, to order a combo of sushi, daily specials, regular menu items (noodles etc), and dessert, we were referred to 4 different menus. Too confusing. Just put everything on one menu! Another star was for the dessert--we ordered the Soba Ice cream and black honey--OMG, the most delicious thing i've ever had! The soba noodles were pretty good. Sushi is divine, highly recommend the salmon. I know I know it's basic but the salmon has the best texture. I got cold soba with tempura and it was good. This place is amazing! My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary and I couldn't have been happier. We sat at the large table in the middle and the meal was pre-planned. The sashimi was so fresh and light, I even liked the sea urchin, which I didn't think I would like. The soba noddles were wonderful. We got the one with the dipping sauces and the spicy tomato. 6 of us went and all agreed so this review is for all of us. Each of us had different dietary needs from no carbs, no seafood to vegetarian. The server told us there were no substitutions and seemed frustrated at our requests. I asked for grilled chicken and was told I could only have fried. Sounds to me like the chicken must be frozen because that's the only way I can think that you wouldn't be able to exchange grilled for fried. 3 of the chicken eaters said it was really bland. So, I am the no carb eater and the options given to me were edamame and spinach "salad". Please do enjoy my pics of spinach mountain which is really just frozen spinach that has been squeezed into a form. It's topped with walnut dressing that tasted like walnuts and dishwater. I didn't touch it and the server happily charged me 6 bones for it. As if it couldn't get worse, I was unable to use my napkin because the meal from the person who ate before me was still present. You might say oh, she has no taste. Nope, I do, this was bad. Maybe just an off day but I'll never know, and I'm great with that. My one star is for location. All I have to say is WHITE SEAWEED SALAD. Seriously. One of the most unique and delicious things I've had in a while. Forget the stringy green stuff- the fluffy white seaweed is amazing and the light tangy sauce on it is a perfect compliment. I would go to Tei An just for that...although then I'd miss out on all the other yummy treats. My other faves? Pressed sushi (make sure you ask for the quad of special dipping sauces- or if you are me, the four sauces and a bowl of the orange sauce so you can drink it afterwards!) and soba noodle sampler (I can't commit to just one sauce- they are all so good). There is a permanent menu as well as a daily menu with specials and we've really enjoyed getting to try some delicious authentic Japanese dishes. The portions are small, so you can order a lot of different things to try. Service is great- the waitresses are always very attentive and we are always seated immediately (if we have a reservation). This is our go to place to eat before any performance in the Arts District. The interior is very simplistic and zen and I appreciate that you can make reservations (although you need to do this a week in advance if you are trying to go on a weekend evening). Its a little pricey, but totally worth it- I have never left disappointed! read more

I'm a fan of Tei-an! This is always my go-to for special occasions. The food and quality are always amazingly deliciously consistent. The ambience is one of a kind. The staff is attentive and courteous. I always get the same: Asian salad, shishito peppers, pressed salmon sushi, tonkotsu ramen and tea-misu dessert but now transitioned to soba ice cream with the honey.... that honey is top notch. I admit the food is pretty authentic Japanese and good, the General Manager at this restaurant is so rude and discriminatory to minorities such as Indian, Korean, Chinese and Japanese. A wonderful dining experience. Got the Omakase and a soba soup. Omakase came with seaweed salad, sashimi, wyagu beef skewers, cold soba sampler and dessert. I loved the seaweed salad and soba. Sashimi was delicious. Wyagu came out on a hot stone, which was a nice touch but I wasn't very impressed with the flavor. BF preferred the hot soba vs cold. The dessert was amazing! Soba ice cream with their special Kuromitsu honey. It was so good, we bought a jar of honey to take home. I would give them 5 stars, but we went early on a Sunday night without a reservation. The restaurant was completely empty, yet they only gave us the option to sit at the bar or counter seating (not a sushi bar, but this curved counter in the main dining area). I would have understood had the other tables been filled, or had filled up, but there were plenty of tables around us, and most of them stayed empty during our meal. Of course, I don't understand their seating policies but it would have been nice to the option to sit at a table, since most were empty anyway.
