I thought it was okay, I can't tell the difference between a good and perfect tartare, but it did go well with the egg yolk and avocado. Wagyu Special Hand Roll was amazing. It's expensive because it comes with uni and caviar, but I promise you it's worth trying. To get the shrimp heads (2pc) you have to get the Ama Ebi (Sweet Shrimp) Roll to get it. I didn't care for the roll, but the shrimp heads were amazing . I'm gonna order 3 rolls next time so I can get 6 shrimp heads lol. I also got the snow crab, toro, seared salmon belly, and langoustine hand rolls. All were so good! I love the atmosphere; to me this is definitely worth coming back considering I live 25 mins away. Lovely South San Jose gem tucked away in an unassuming strip mall. I came here with a friend on Sunday for lunch around 11 AM opening, and the area gradually began to fill up. Our rolls came out relatively quickly! My friend ordered Set #1 with salmon, hamachi, and tuna hand rolls. I ordered the uni spoon, truffle salt edamame, and chicken katsu hand roll because I wanted to try a little bit of everything! The uni spoon was lovely, it came with egg yolk, caviar, green onion, and Hokkaido uni. So fresh, the texture was decadent without being overwhelming/too conflicting. If I had to describe it, it was creamy from the egg yolk and uni with a bit of a crispness from the green onion and caviar. The truffle salt edamame was delicious and plentiful, and the katsu was really good! If they served it on the side on its own/not as a hand roll, I'd order this 100%. My friend liked her set well enough, we both agreed that we'd come here to order different dishes another time. We started off with the set 4 ($65) which has 6 rolls. Ordered the salmon skin on the side, but set 4 was honestly the perfect amount. salmon carpaccio: super flavorful 5/5 The set 4: loved the different flavors. The waygu, toro, and scallop are my favorite. I recommend getting their pickled wasabi (extra $3) but worth it. You can always order more, but I was so stuffed. The quality of the hand rolls weren't too WOW but they were still good. I don't think the most expensive set, number 4 was worth it though so I'd opt for set number 3 that they offer. We liked the fried octopus, would skip the salmon tartare as it didn't really have any other taste than sesame oil. Overall, if you feel a bit boujee and wanna get some drinks, definitely stop by. The menu is definitely designed in a tasting menu style. It's worth it if you're leaning towards Set 4 to get the most out of the 6 hand rolls. My partner and I chose to get Set 1 and Set 2, and the fish were so fresh. Definitely get the pickled wasabi as it enhances the flavors even more compared to regular wasabi. I personally don't like adding wasabi, but I couldn't stop with the pickled one. The truffle salmon carpaccio was smooth and milky, as with any salmon sashimi out there. The ambience is pretty casual, making it a comfortable spot for a quick dinner or a relaxed night out. My fiancé and I both enjoyed several of the rolls we ordered. He especially liked the spicy tuna, and I personally enjoyed the snow crab. I believe I ordered Set C, which included five different hand rolls. It was a great option for getting around my decision fatigue. I also added a langostine roll, which was quite decent. They have a good variety of hand rolls, as well as appetizers and other sushi dishes. It's easy to build a meal that fits your cravings without feeling limited. The chef preparing our food was very nice and talkative. We had a fun conversation with him about the plastic wraps used on the hand rolls. While I understand the reasoning behind it, since it helps keep the seaweed from getting soggy when serving multiple rolls at once, I still prefer traditional hand roll service: one at a time and without the extra single-use plastic. The chef mentioned he had the idea of using a plastic cover that pulls up and down instead of side to side, but the shop had already stocked too many of the current ones. We shared a laugh about it. Still, the plastic does take away from the experience. You sometimes have to jimmy it open, which can cause the rice or toppings to fall apart. It's not ideal, especially if you've had higher-end hand rolls elsewhere. The wait staff was neutral and professional. Service was efficient but lacked warmth or any personal touch. If you're new to hand rolls, this is a decent place to start. If you're more seasoned or particular, I'd recommend Yonsei Handrolls in Oakland or checking out some of the standout spots in LA. read more

I knew that this place had recently opened, so I called the restaurant prior to our visit to inquire about reservations. I was informed that seating was first come, first serve. My husband and I took a chance and decided to grab lunch at Temaki Bar on a Sunday around 1:30pm. The place wasn't busy at all. We and another couple were the only guests at the time. Temaki Bar was exactly as its name entailed, a bar. The sushi chefs were in the center, and the bar surrounded them. Think of it as a 360-degree chef's table. That being said, it does not make the best for an intimate group dining, especially if you want to chat across from each other. I did find that their light up liquor wall was cool though. Service was fine. We did have to flag our waitress when we needed her, and you had to order directly to her. Otherwise, the hand rolls came out considerably quickly since our sushi chef was right there in front of us. I found the rolls to be unreasonably expensive. A wagyu handroll with all the fixings was $24, for example. It's just way too easy to burn through money at Temaki Bar because the hand rolls were not filling. We split the most premium set (probably the best value you can get because rolls start adding up) and continued to add hand rolls to share between us depending on our satiety. After we felt like we tried everything we wanted to, we ordered chicken karaage for good measure. I suppose I would come back to Temaki Bar, but I wouldn't be running back anytime soon. Food The handroll size was relatively small, quality was good, and enough variety to make things interesting for snacking. Karaage both squid and chicken were ok, not bad but nothing special. Went for lunch, didn't try the drinks. Cost/Tipping Service The karaage dishes were ok but the handrolls I think were a bit overpriced. Based on the size, I would need probably 10-12 of those handrolls to leave satisfied, which would take it to about $100/person before drinks. Definitely set up more for group outings or for those who want to impress and cost is not a concern. Bill was left on the table with recommended tips amount, no extra junk fees, so that was ok. Overall, not bad. I will be rooting for them to survive for a long time. It is probably a good place to hangout or to watch some games with a few buddies and have fancy snack sized finger food. We were finally able to try this place out on Saturday for dinner. Service was really good. Everyone was attentive and came by to check if we recieved all our orders and if we wanted to order any more items. They forgot to give us the condiments after our first order came out but they fixed that right away when they realized. The ambiance was very good. Since it was our first time, we wanted to try some of the appetizers and one of their sake selection. We ordered the Riding Bull sake which the server recommended when we told her we want something dry but with a fruity taste but not too sweet. The sake did not disappoint. It has a good fruit flavor and we could still taste the sake flavor. The scallop carpaccio was sweet and creamy. The squid karaage was crunchy and the dipping sauce was pretty good. We ordered a few handrolls. The scallop was sweet and buttery and packed a lot of flavor. The spicy scallop was really good too. Don't skip out on the toro special. My kids liked the wagyu handroll and the crab handroll. The crab they used were actual crab and not imitation crab. If you like sashimi, I would recommend ordering the sashimi platter b. We were given complimentary fried shrimp head for part of our meal. I never had this before. The first half was crunchy and had some meat. The second half of the head was creamy. 3.5 rounded up because they had seating available for us Saturday peak dinner hours during Valentine's weekend as we were trying to find a spot after some not so tasty wine tasting. We had looked into 2 other places prior to coming here but one had too long of a wait while the other couldn't open the bottle of wine we had brought with us. We called and were told there were seats available and a few minutes later arrived to a half-empty restaurant. Note: most of their seats at the bar are with the high chairs that while comfy were not the easiest to get in and out of. I also happened to sit right across from the bathroom, so for a portion of the meal my view was of the bathroom mirror. My friends opted for Set 4 while I went with Set 3 and added a special toro roll. We also got an order of chicken karaage and sake. Seems like we were the first customers to bring our own wine as they had to run out to get a wine opener for us and also served our wine in big tea cups. The karaage came out piping hot and was quite tasty. The chefs made our sets and served them to us. The first wrapper I tried to undo was a fail as I pulled way too hard that the seaweed broke. However, once I got the hang of it, the other plastic wrappers came out smoothly. My favorite of Set 3 was the spicy tuna to my surprise since I usually don't enjoy that type of roll. I think it was because it had the most flavor to it. While the other fish tasted just fine, there was no wow factor. I had to follow up about my special toro roll as the chef didn't serve it with the other rolls, but that was quickly taken care of. The special toro roll was deliciously special, but I am unsure if it is worthy of the $24 price tag. When it came time to pay, the way they split the bill with the rolls on the set is confusing as they show each of the rolls and a "discounted" price since it is in a set rather than just listing how much each set was. I think it would have been easier to read if we all got the same set, but since mine was different we did have to do some computing to ensure the bill was right. I think there was a few dollars discrepancy from what they listed and what we added up, but it was too much math to do so we let it be (there was no printed out paper version so we were looking at everything on the payment device). The corkage fee ended up being $25. Temaki Bar is in a neighborhood I rarely frequent, so for that reason I probably would not return. Our sushi chef was super courteous, he seemed to be the oldest/most experienced. I would give him the 5 stars for sure for the service and experience alone. We were waiting a while for someone to take our order, and I'm not sure it's standard, but he ended up writing down our order on a piece of paper and then handing it to one of the servers. But once most of our food came out, the servers came back to check on teas/waters, clear plates, etc. I can't speak to the raw stuff, but the Sashimi platter A that my husband ordered looked so delicious. We ended the night with the mochi, I wanted the sesame and the strawberry, in which I was told the strawberry was out of stock, so I said matcha was fine. Our order for party of 2: we each got the Set #1 ($22 for 3 basic handrolls - salmon, hamachi, tuna), and then we also added on 2 toro rolls, 2 salmon belly rolls, an extra salmon roll, and an ama ebi roll (so total 6 rolls per person). Total was $170 after tax and tip, we didn't get any drinks although there's a whole menu page dedicated to alcohol. Pros: - Lots of options - you can do the sets if you don't want to make too many decisions, or do a la carte or a combo of both. - The fish was delicious and the rolls were a great size for what you pay for - I felt like the price was fair. My favorite was the salmon belly roll, super buttery and yummy. - quantity was nice too - I felt like after 6 rolls I was decently full, could still have dessert but not feeling like I need to go somewhere else to get more food. - Service was really efficient, everyone was really nice. - Super fun ambiance ! they have music playing, and they also had the football game on both screens which was nice. - The ama ebi handroll comes with 2 fried heads you can eat after! - They had a really cute bulldog wandering around the restaurant at our feet and he was SO cute. - Weird but great thing - the bar seating chairs were very solid and secure, I didn't feel like I was going to lean back and tip over haha, good back support. - A very friendly handroll experience if you haven't been to a place like this before - they give you instructions on a paper of how to remove the plastic wrap around the nori and everything. While I'm usually not a huge fan of single use plastic, I do like that this allows them to prep the handrolls without waiting for you to finish yours first - since the plastic keeps the nori from getting soggy. - Clean bathrooms available. Easy parking lot. Not too busy during the day. I think the price that you're getting it for is a little expensive for what it is. The food was a little bland, but the concept and idea is there. I think the menu has to be worked on a little bit but overall it's pretty good. Ambiance (5/5): I love the ambiance inside and the layout is so unique. I have never seen anything else like it. First time trying hand roll sushi like this, and I don't think I would go anywhere else. When I walked in, I was greeted by the two owners, Sunnie and Alex, and they made me feel at home right away. Their service and food were top notch, and everything tasted so fresh. I would be recommending this place to everyone I know. Temaki Bar is a relatively new handroll spot in South San Jose that makes fresh hand rolls directly from the chef to your hand. They have set roll meals that you can even sub out (as long as what you are subbing for costs the same)! For those looking for something fancier, they also have more premium options like the toro, uni, and wagyu. By far one of the freshest fish I have ever had in the Bay Area, coming from Las Vegas we have amazing quality fish from the casino, but nothing beats the service and the food that myself and my cousin had here. Love that there's a new hand roll bar in south San Jose! It's a great space with bar seating. The hand roll chefs are at the center taking care of guests. They are attentive and make great hand rolls! I like that there is the option to switch out hand rolls in their sets - you would just pay the difference. The appetizers are delicious as well! We got the salmon truffle carpaccio and the squid karaage. I like that they use whole squid and their dipping sauce is delicious. The bill was close to $200 so it can get pretty pricey, but would love to come back and try more! read more

Really appreciated the Asaki on tap, and the pickled wasabi was a first for me! I loved it! Tried the option of pre-selected rolls; the 4 roll selection. I'm not a big fan of cream cheese in my sushi, so only one of the rolls was a slight miss for me. The hand rolls were delicious--definitely worth returning for. However, service could improve. Water wasn't offered automatically, and our beer arrived late with no apology. The seating layout is U-shaped (reminds me of Sugo Hand Roll Bar in Seattle) and the wall of sake bottles on the right gives nightclub vibes, which I love. All of us each got the Set 1 lunch set, which includes salmon, hamachi, and tuna hand rolls. They were all tasty and prepared well. Came in these cute wooden holders. As a group, we also shared some apps: shrimp tempura, cucumber salad, chicken karaage, and ikageso squid karaage. The fried foods had a crispy texture without being too oily, while the cucumber salad had a more Chinese-style flavor with the chili oil and garlic. This is a great addition to the South SJ area. The wall of sake is beautiful and isn't like anything else around, very visually stunning. Of course, there is a great selection of sakes. Tasty, quality fish, but a bit overpriced. My friend and I got about 3 hand rolls each, to which we were full, but the total came out to be roughly more than $100 for us both combined. I think there are other sushi bars where you could get the same quality and amount for a lower price, but I understand the pricing can be a bit competitive especially around the Bay Area. The toro and salmon handrolls were our favorites; I personally think you can skip the uni handroll. read more
