First of all, book in advance. We made our reservation a month before on their websites The restaurant has a 21 pax sitting capacity. Intimate and ambient, it feels like being in someone's living room. There's no menu, you have to trust that the 6-course meal will be to your liking and be open to the element of surprise! We thoroughly enjoyed dining here, meals are prepared attentively, service is impeccable and everything we ate was absolutely excellent! Our course included: scallops, shrimp, salmon, mushroom soup, pasta and a decadent crumble for dessert. Portions look deceptively small, just trust that you will leave the restaurant pretty stuffed. A tale of two sections, biased heavily (and thankfully) towards the restaurant: the former Piccolo space is now a welcoming space run in the same vein as Travail (back when it was cool) and Demi: chefs serve and cook. They run the experience in seatings where all guests/tables are served at once across the courses -- so being on time is important and being late will earn some karmic side-eyes from other patrons. The food is great: fresh, flavorful, dynamic -- the coursing is well-timed, nothing is rushed of belabored. The staff is friendly and cares about the food. It feels casual but not too familiar. The only course that was weaker than the others was dessert--a crème brûlée seemed underwhelming after 5 previous courses that impressed. Now the downside? The separate bar. On suggestion of our server we went there afterward for a drink and I cannot emphasize how much of a tonal shift it is to go from a well-oiled machine in the dining room to a bar that is slower than molasses with only basic cocktails. The bar almost feels like someone thought it would be *neat* to have a bar and just opened it without a plan. Maybe if you need to kill time before a seating with a drink it might work, but it's woefully understaffed. The cocktails are not terrible, better than whoever is mixing them at Khaluna or BLG. There must be some odd permit/license issue because they cannot serve cocktails in the main restaurant despite the internal door. So I wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant experience--just skip the bar and pretend it isn't also called "Tenant." read more

Such an amazing staff and the dishes are absolutely amazing. Always head over to the bar side a little early before your seating for a cocktail or glass of wine. If you haven't experienced it, I would recommend sitting at the counter, it's such a fun experience watching the work going on in the kitchen from different angles. The staff was extremely friendly, it was so much fun doing the wine pairing with the courses because you never have to figure out what to pair yourself! What can I say--Tenant is everything fine dining could be when made unpretentious and approachable. When arriving, we were arriving ahead of our reservation. We were able to sit in the lounge area behind the kitchen and enjoy some before-dinner cocktails. The old fashioned is par excellence, and the small plate options left our table so intrigued that we needed to stop in after dinner. The ambiance is minimalist while striking a strong neighborhood restaurant vibe. The record player spinning vinyl adds a decidedly old school cool vibe to the whole place. Next door, we took a short walk through the kitchen for our dinner reservation and were treated to a fairly priced and delectable tasting menu that ranged from fish tartare with a fried wonton chip to a main dish of chicken park. The dessert was a fabulous creme brûlée. I'm glossing over some of the courses because half the joy of going to Tenant is experiencing firsthand, untainted by others' experiences. My last note would be to try the Tenantwurst in the lounge if it's available. It's the perfect version of a cheesy brat, and it really left me feeling satisfied after a gorgeous night of laughter and conversation among family. A fun and relatively affordable no frills, small plates, prix fixe menu. Wine pairing is by color and country! This was a tasty, non pretentious, classy dinner comprised of contemporary American cuisine. I lost count of the number of plates, but the amount of food was perfect. We left feeling satiated and not over stuffed. Highlights were a sausage ravioli with orange sauce, and a duck confit dish. The bananas foster dessert was delectable. This place is hard to get into. Reservations only, about 23 people can be seated at a time. There are a few different seating times, we started at 6. Six courses, pre-fixe menu that rotates seasonally for $50 with an optional $25 addition for beverage pairing. You get three full, separate pours to match with courses 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6. My parents and I came here for a birthday dinner and sat at the counter, with a nearly unobstructed view of the kitchen. There are about six staff, who play all the roles of host, waiter, chef, bartender. Everything is a communal effort with each flexing effortlessly between jobs. Each dish is small. We starting with a refreshing hamachi crudo, then a frisee salad with pork belly, a mushroom soup, ravioli, mixed pasta, and finally a sorbet with crumble. Dined here recently with a couple of friends, one from NYC and the other originally from Turkey. Both consider themselves to be well-traveled foodies and were very impressed with Tenant, as was I. I'm tempted to use the word sublime to describe the menu we enjoyed. But that word may connote a bit too much grandeur or even suggest a stuffy formality. Tenant is too chill for that. Maybe a better choice of descriptive words might include elevated, inspired, creative and delectable. Each course was well-conceived, superbly prepared and attractively presented. We started with a Marlin Crudo accompanied by Sweet & Sour Beets, Beet Cured Roe, a dollop of Preserved Tomato/Pepper Mayo and topped with crisp Fresno and Chive curls. An excellent, light, palate awakening beginning to our adventure. Next up was a double header, stacked dishes with two very distinct offerings. On top was a Celery Root Cacio & Pepe. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the rich, hearty cream sauce had a pleasingly peppery bite. Beneath was a bowl with three Arancini and a char-pickled Romanesco served with a ramekin of Onion/Parmesan Cream. Delicious. Following was a nicely grilled Yellowtail served with Brussels Leaves, Heart of Palm and a bright Salsa Verde. The fish skin was crisp, the flesh moist and flaky and the sides complemented the (Amberjack?) quite well. The next course consisted of bowl of Onion Ash Cappelletti stuffed with a dense, creamy Gorgonzola Dolce, slices of braised Oxtail, scallions and mushrooms, over which was poured a rich, sumptuous beef broth. Absolutely spectacular. The last savory course was a plate with a single Raviolo with homemade sausage, soft, buttery Robiola cheese, enveloping a perfectly cooked, runny egg yolk and drizzled with Balsamico. Yum! For dessert, modest scoops each of Vanilla Custard and Brown Butter / Caramel Ice cream topped with Candied Pecans. Perfect. One small quibble. I did see a French Press of coffee brought out to a nearby table after we had consumed our dessert. Had we known to ask, it would have been a welcome accompaniment. As it is, I'll keep it in mind for the next visit. The atmosphere is intimate and casually gracious. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the chef/owners who also function as servers, alternatively delivering then articulately, enthusiastically describing the various courses. We left feeling like old friends. Throughout the evening they spun up a well curated selection of vinyl albums on an old-school console Hi-Fi (I recognized cuts by Lightnin' Hopkins among others). I enjoyed most of the dishes, this place is solid 3.5 stars. Food was just okay, dessert was amazing, napkin/towel thing was disgusting. 1. Reservation We made reservations about a month prior. It is fixed $50 pre-tax and tips. The seating and serving of the meals start on the dot, on time. 2. 6 course tasting menu The portions are teeny. I did not like the pasta dishes, which are half of the 6. The dessert was divine though. Look at my pictures for details. You can get 3 tasting glasses of wine to pair with your food. However, I chose not to do that considering those wines were cheaper wines that didn't justify the price. 3. Service Servers were fast, knowledgeable, nice and engaging. We could see the kitchen from our seat. Seemed like they had everything ready before people were seated and serving. I felt rushed too. With 6 course menu, we were fully done in only 45 minutes. Just because I was talking a bit with my friends, server had to stand in front to collect my little food before I was done eating. I didn't like that. 4. Ambience/parking Restaurant was empty except us and a group of 3. More people came in about an hour after the dinner started. Parking will be on the street and free. However, finding a spot closer is a bit of an issue. One will need to walk a bit. Generally, it was a pleasant dinner, decent food. I am not that fond of the decor of the restaurant. Our meal at Tenant was wonderful. The many small courses were sized perfectly. We especially enjoyed the crab cake and the crudo. One of us tried the wine pairing as well and found it nicely matched to entrees. We felt it was a good value for the quality of the food. We love that it is small and approachable. Great service. This was the most fun dining experience I have ever had. I've never had a coursed dinner before, and was worried it would be stuffy. I could not have been more wrong--the staff are all young and fun chefs. I was greeted at the door by my name, and the whole evening felt like a fun dinner party. They even let me choose an album to play on the record player! The food was wonderful, and I appreciated that we got a little bit of everything. Our courses consisted of salmon, pasta, venison, sausage, oysters, and other seafood. The dessert was an amazing little pot of crème fraîche. Tenant is outstanding in every way. The food is not only delicious but the recipes and presentation are creative and artistic. I honestly can't recall a better meal. Then the atmosphere and vibe are casual, clean and comfortable. The two owners and other chefs prepare and also serve the six courses. As they serve you each course, they describe the dish and the ingredients. Servings are small but every morsel is outstanding and we left feeling well fed and thoroughly satisfied. The wine pairings were spot on as well. Oh, they also spin great vinyl albums which only adds to the atmosphere. Every aspect is impressive and attentive. They even call ahead to find out any dietary restrictions. Their menu changes every six weeks or so to include ingredients which are in season. Understandably, it is tough to get a reservation. The experience here is a special one -- an intimate gathering of skilled chefs and foodies. Reserve a seat at the chef's table, which grants you a view of the kitchen... it'll be hard not to jump the counter and grab the beautiful dishes, trust me. Tenant offers a seasonal 6 course prix fixe menu for $50pp, which I think is reasonable! I believe wine pairings are +$25pp. Once everyone was at the counter (urge your friends to be punctual so you don't have to wait for them and/or slap them), the refined feast began. Each course came out in a timely fashion and looking elegant. I loved the variety of dishes and styles of presentation, and of course the food was elevated yet approachable. We had: 1) marlin crudo with a coconut milk bath 2) radicchio with blue cheese, giardiniera, and suckling pig prosciutto 3) ravioli with charcoal grilled maitake mushroom 4) paprika & sausage pasta puttanesca 5) seared duck breast and creamy pasta 6) custard dessert. My favorites: the crudo, duck, and dessert! I had to dock a star here because both of the pasta dishes (4 & 5) were incredibly vinegary. What a wonderful evening out! We sat at the counter (8 people sit there and you are able to see them prepare the meal). It was wonderful area since we had great conversations with people around us and the chef. He was weird from the get-go, but only got more creepy as the night went on, staring at my partner and asking other people to stare at her too. He asked us if we do drugs, and then made some comment about my penis. The whole thing was feeling like a kind of insane test since my partner was wondering if they were hiring. TENANT! Tenant is fabulous. My wife and I have been there about 6 or 7 times and there's nothing bad to say about it. It's a cool little spot that has a hip feel without being too much. Grisha is always there to greet you at the door with a smile (when we don't all have to wear masks) and I enjoy watching the chefs work their asses off in the open kitchen. The food is always phenomenal. Six courses, always accommodating of any dietary restrictions, and although the plates maybe "small", I've never been hungry after leaving. The guys describe every dish when its served which just adds to the experience. Oh, and Get the wine pairing, you won't regret it. I'm so glad that this place exists in Minneapolis! It was our second time dining here last night and it was just as amazing of an experience as it was the first time. The space is low-key and cozy, there is always music playing from a vinyl record. Service is so fun! The chefs literally run the whole show - from cooking to serving to personally greeting you at the door. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, the food on their tasting menu seem to revolve around clean, vibrant, and interesting flavors. Which is what I'm alllll about! Overall, I am a little disappointed due to high expectations given previous reviews. While each dish had good to great elements, I only thought desserts were exceptional. At $60/person, it's reasonably priced for prix fixe tasting around the Twin Cities but not sure if it's quite worth the price. The 6 week rotating menu is not posted anywhere - would be nice if guests can look at the menu before making a reservation. Service was great throughout dinner with chefs addressing you by name. One also offered to make me a drink - a slightly tart and sweet Sumac Tea - which I enjoyed. I debated between 3 or 4 stars but bumped it up to 4 based on service and desserts. Details of each course below. Course 1 Shrimp, Cherry Tomatoes, Scallion, Tomato Broth Great vegetable components with the standout being cherry tomato. Not a fan of cold soups although it had good flavor. Shrimp could have been better quality wise - I didn't care much for it. Course 2 Hamachi, Roasted Red Pepper Sauce, Picked Veggies Very pretty presentation. Loved the crunch of pickled veg against the rest of the dish. While the sauce was enjoyable, there is too much of it, overpowering the fish flavor. I would say the Hamachi quality is average. Course 3 Raviolo, Pulled Pork, Goat Chesse, Sourdough bread Fluffy bread with crunchy crust was the highlight as the dish is too salty for me so bread was great at negating saltiness. Goat cheese was a bit overwhelming. Course 4 Rigatoni, Mushrooms, Corn, Shishito, Breadcrumbs Again, unforutnately quite salty to the point where I almost had trouble finishing it but great potential with good flavor and components especially mushrooms. Course 5 New York Strip, Veggie Skewer, Whipped Bleu Cheese, Jus Probably the best savory dish of the night. Tender grilled meat and great charred veggies. Not a fan of blue cheese dip. Pre-Dessert Huckleberry Slushie Refreshing palate cleanser. Loved the herbs and contrast between slight tartness and sweetness from the berry. Course 6 Lemon and Vanilla Custard, Cocoa Nibs, Nuts (?), Toasted Coconut Flakes My favorite course of the night. Creamy, smooth and silky with nice crunch from the toppings. The menu was a joke, we thought that the ravioli tasted like Annie's mac & cheese! And we're hungry and we left hungry and we spent $150 each and were chased out of the restaurant. Dear Tenant, A week ago, we were strangers. I had reservations, but didn't know what to expect from you. After all, you had just opened that week. I convinced my boyfriend to come with me. We battled traffic and got there a few minutes early. The rest was all you. You definitely made a lasting impression. The gentleman and I each ordered the six-course tasting meal and the wine pairing. Every single item was exquisite. The menu changes weekly. What will remain constant is that they will start with a tartare or crudo each week. And chances are that the food and service will continue impressing. We started with the beef tartare. It was subtle yet flavorful. The tarragon was a lovely touch, and a must for beef tartare, according to staff. Next there was soup. The mushroom broth with Taleggio cavatelli struck a nice balance; the vinegar in the broth complemented the smooth and subtle pasta filling. If you get a bowl with spouts, I was assured there would be no judgement if you drink from the spouts. NEXT (my mouth is salivating as I write this) was the fennel sausage and homemade ricotta pasta with garlic sauce. It was like ravioli. Wizardry! Reed recommended eating the two together. Good advice. The ricotta was so smooth and creamy! I'm still thinking about this pasta a week later. My boyfriend and I agreed it was the best pasta we've ever had. (And yes, We have been to Italy.) We got about four bites from it, so make sure you savor every bit of the pasta you'll get. Then came the pasta with homemade meatballs after. It came with Parmesan two ways. The sauce was robust and the meatball was well prepared. The last savory item was polenta with Parmesan, duck, chicken sausage, and grilled carrots. It was the most filling dish we got. I kept asking myself how could a carrot taste so good? How could the skin on the duck be so crispy? Probably wizardry. Or skill. More likely skill. For dessert, we had toasted malt pot de crème. It was velvety and not too sweet. A satisfying end to our meal. The three wines paired perfectly with the dishes. The service was attentive and informative. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. Highlights of my meal were definitely the scallop and the duck. The mushroom broth in one of the stuffed pasta was very good also. This is a chef course meal concept, which means they pick what to serve on that day and there is no food menu to choose from. 5 courses, 2 bites each, $50 (reasonably priced), optional wine pairing for $25, and turntable music! Perfect! It's nothing like Travail though... but it's also cheaper than Travail so you pay for what you get. We opted to seat at the counter, which was fun because you get to observe the bustling kitchen and it feels like you just walked into your friend's kitchen. It's cool. The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because I think they should serve less pasta dishes and come up with more creative and small plates with wow effect. Overall good experience. I have to rank Tenant as one of my top 5 most enjoyable meals/ restaurant experiences ever. The restaurant offers a fixed 6 course menu based on seasonally available ingredients for $50 with an optional beverage pairing for $25 (may I add that's an incredible value). The restaurant isn't huge, but it's cozy, well lit, and aesthetically pleasing. They offer seating at the chefs counter (recommend) and have about 5-8 tables. Sitting at the chefs counter was a blast! Interacting with the staff and other guests made the experience that much better. The meal started with Cava and beef tartare, moved onto two lighter pasta dishes paired with a beautiful Beaujolais, a heavier pasta was next, followed along by chicken roulade as the main course, and a light dessert at the end. The overall vibe was casual and fun. The music was spot on-they even let us choose some tunes! The staff was attentive and truly focused on the guests. The kitchen is young, but has immense talent! I tip my hat to the chefs and the quality of food they were putting out- I think they are going to be very successful. For a fun experiment, ask to take your leftovers home with you. Nothing extra, no special packaging requests, just literally ask to take home the food on your plate that you can't finish and don't want to waste. You'll quickly get a pic of these guys' hospitality philosophy - or lack thereof. The food is amazing - but their attitude totally ruined what could have been a totally stellar experience, and I'm so bummed that it affected our experience so much - but dining out is more than just food on a plate. Five stars for the cooking - but unfortunately the attitude totally cancelled that out. When we kindly asked for a small box for food we couldn't finish - as you would at literally any restaurant in the world and have likely done thousands of times - they said they "didn't do takeout", "couldn't let the food on the table leave the building", and even said they wouldn't bring the next course until we let the food on the table go. Let's be clear: Not wanting to waste food is not asking for "take out". We didn't make any special requests as far as packaging, extra food, extra sauces, or anything annoying. They refused because they "can't let this food leave the building"? What am I going to do, take the leftovers to my secret basement food lab and chemically reverse engineer their precious recipes, open a competitor restaurant, and take all their customers? Is the food on my plate, which I paid for, *not* actually my food? Is it just "on loan" from the Tenant collection, for the period of the meal, but they reserve the right to take back what I can't finish? What if I had a big lunch, or want to make sure I have room to taste all the courses, or don't want to eat to the level of discomfort, but I also don't want to waste food (a huge problem in the industry and America in general)? My husband and I have both worked front and back of house in the industry, dined all over the world, and strive to be good guests - so we get how annoying "special requests" can be - but this is not that. You can also see from my other reviews that I tend to be an enthusiastic reviewer and supporter of independent spots. I even waited *months* to post this, but I'm still upset we wasted a birthday dinner, a babysitter, and frankly our time and energy even having a conversation about the philosophy of leftovers and hospitality, but here we are. If you do decide to go, be sure to ask for your leftovers. Bring your own eco-friendly container so you aren't putting them out at all. Full story: In October of 2020 my mom and I went to Tenant Restaurant to celebrate a special event. I'd dined there twice pre-pandemic and wanted to share the experience with my mom. She is in a high-risk age group and hasn't dined out since the pandemic started, but we figured a restaurant like Tenant would follow CDC guidelines and the state's mask mandate. Boy, were we wrong. We were seated at the counter facing the kitchen and could see that co-owner and chef Cameron Cecchini was NOT wearing his mask. Instead it was dangling from one ear. We watched him for over 10 minutes, and he never put it over his face as he prepared food.   When the other co-owner, Grisha Hammes, asked for our drink order, my mom expressed concern that chef Cecchini wasn't wearing his mask. Hammes replied that the chef only took off the mask to taste food. When my mom pointed out the chef had not been wearing it for quite a while, Hammes told us we could leave if we weren't comfortable. We were taken aback that Hammes saw no need to ask his business partner to comply with the state's mask mandate, but we told Hammes that we would stay. He returned to the kitchen. A few minutes later, chef Cecchini stormed out of the kitchen with his mask on, leaned over us and thrust his hand at me. I reflexively extended mine and he shook and said "Thanks for coming. Now GET OUT." We were stunned as he brusquely swept away our place settings and again told us to get out. He didn't give a reason. He returned to the kitchen and when my mom started to express her objection to his actions, he again aggressively yelled at us. We left in shock and waited outside for 15 minutes in freezing weather for an Uber (Tenant Restaurant is in a residential area, so there was no other place to go). In retrospect, the handshake was a power move and a final health-and-safety "F... you." His behavior was shockingly rude, aggressive, hostile and juvenile, given that my mom was expressing a valid concern about a violation of the mask mandate. It was also illegal, because we were denied service for no valid reason. In a time when so many restaurants are working hard to stay open, you're better off taking your business anywhere but Tenant. read more

WOW what a culinary experience! Came here with my boyfriend with high expectations and we were thoroughly impressed! The restaurant is small with 3-4 tables and bar seating- we sat at the bar which I would highly recommend because you can see straight into the kitchen. The menu changes every 6 weeks and is not posted on the website, but don't let that scare you! You can expect 6 courses for $50 + a wine pairing for $25 (I don't think the wine pairing was necessary to enjoy the experience but it did keep flowing throughout the night - so you get your $$ worth). The service is excellent- the best I've experienced in MN. We were greeted at the door, and from that point going forward all the staff in the restaurant referred to us by name. The chefs/servers are one in the same, so when the courses are served the description of the food is coming straight from a chef. The food is fantastic. The first 3 courses were some of the best bites I've ever eaten. We started off with seared ahi on top of an ancho chile aoli- fresh with a bit of heat. The second dish was 2 separate tastes: cacio e pepe & risotto Parmesan fritters with a roasted cauliflower sauce. YUM. Both dishes were rich and full of flavor and the presentation of the two dishes stacked on top of each other was really fun. Next we were served sea bass on top of both a pesto and cream sauce- the dish was served with a couple fried brussel sprouts which added great texture. I will say- the dishes that followed were too salty. We had gorgonzola tortellini in a beef broth. The broth was borderline too salty, but I slurped it up anyway. Our last savory dish was a raviolo which was wayyy too salty I couldn't finish it. The chefs were very receptive to feedback and this didn't really detract from my total experience. My new favorite Twin Cities restaurant. First of all, despite the creativity and thoughtful execution of each course, this is an unpretentious dining experience. Reservations are made weeks to months in advance, but when you walk through the door, you are greeted with a handshake, referred to by name, and escorted to your seat as if you were an invited guest. It is their pleasure to serve, as opposed to your fortune to dine with them. The vibe is laid back, blue collar feeling with white table cloth attention. The space is quaint and cozy, without being cramped or stuffy. A turntable near the door sets the mood with a variety of music genres sampled through the night. The chefs, who double as servers and casual entertainment, are courteous, detail oriented, apt to chat with patrons at the bar and appear genuinely happily employed. The meal experience is a bargain at $50 per person for 6 courses. Each dish is given a 6 week run, so every 1.5 months the menu turns over. Wine pairing for $25 is a must, particularly if you are sitting at the counter. Strictly speaking, you get three glasses throughout the meal, but in actuality, if you are there during the late evening service, any open bottles are fair game and I ended up with at least 5 pours. They are able to keep costs low by having only the amount of food necessary on hand to feed all the guests. Your gain and no waste! Given that the menu changes frequently, it would be frivolous to explain the dishes I had in great detail. What I will say is that each dish is well planned and well executed. They do an exceptional job at balancing bold flavors, pushing boundaries of creativity, reimagining classics, and providing enough substance that you will not leave hungry. They will also adjust the menu to your dietary needs if given advanced notice. I cannot say enough about this place. It's like you were invited to your new best friend's house, and he is as laid back and cool as Lenny Kravitz. He doesn't need your approval, but he feeds on your appreciation. Service is beyond reprehensible. Willfully rude, short and standoffish. I was left somewhat in shock by how passive aggressive the bartender acted. It was wild. Strange. Cocktails left much much to be desired and whatever happens...DO NOT ASK FOR ICE. When bartender finally served drinks...we never saw her again. Place is epitome of pretentiousness and hardly welcoming. Easily the worst dining experience in my life. I dont need to be stressed out by bitter bartender while trying to enjoy a simple drink. Feel bad for whoever the owner is to have this person as face of restaurant. Too many other cool places in Minneapolis....dont go here. read more

I had dinner at Tenant last night and it was wonderful -- the food, atmosphere and the service. I have a number of food allergy and the chef could not have been sweeter. He cared immensely and put a lot of time into ensuring that my experience was extraordinary. A huge thank you. read more
