I came here with a friend on the Sat of Halloween weekend and we had a great time. Some patrons came in costume but it wasn't the majority. No one was rowdy or out of hand and the food we got was good. The place is vegan friendly but I have to say... there was a small hair in my main dish. I didn't tell the staff. I don't know what would've happened if I had but I left it. They weren't particularly attentive - we had to try and flag someone for everything and waited a solid 15min after asking for the check. I had a great time but it was b/c of who I was with. I wish I could say I'd come back but the hair in the food and slow service kinda kills it. The drinks were nice and strong. Place was big enough that there's barley any wait. A lil slow in actual entrees but they did have tons of staffs.... So not sure what the problem was. Had the Triple Hako (no rice) and it was very different and good. The yaki nabe udon is insanely big, loaded with veggies and side if shrimp... Annnnnd a salad! Great spot that I stop by for lunch frequently. Generous filling in their rolls with minimal rice. Fish is always super fresh and their portions are great. Absolutely awful. Ordered tuna and salmon rolls as a lunch special. The fish was inedible - not only did it smell foul, but it was soggy and tasted horribly rotten. I will never be ordering from here again, nor do I recommend anyone eat here. I just had dinner here and I feel compelled to write this review. I don't do this too often. I ate here pretty much by default because two other places were closing early due to a water main break! I was looking for a nice bowl of Nabeyaki udon. I have ordered nabeyaki udon all over the world including many times in Japan. It's a severe test of a restaurant's quality! I just had the best I have ever had at this restaurant. Jam packed with delicious ingredients, not overly large, and the broth was perfectly balanced and very delicious. Very high-quality all around. It was even served correctly! It's a nice place, They even made me a killer margarita! It's also very inexpensive by local standards. My margarita and bowl of noodles cost me $26 with tax. Very reasonable, considering. I can highly recommend this place, and you can trust me on this. I plan on going back soon with my wife arrives. She is Japanese and I'm sure she will approve! I came here for my bday lunch and think Tenzan is a great place for a group! They have very good lunch specials, like 3 sushi rolls for $11 and bento boxes for $12. Lunch specials come with soup or salad, and the bento boxes come with both. The fish is fresh. The tempura is well made. The calamari appetizer was really small. Great cocktails bad sushi! One of the best lychee martinis you can get in midtown east but bad sushi. The infamous double roll was bland; the green river roll tasted funny; and the spicy tuna was "meh.". Service sort of made up for the bad sushi but when you're a sushi joint...you kind of need to have good sushi. read more

Tenzan is amazeball! It's our go-to spot in the neighborhood. Service is always consistently good .. Sometimes, a little bit difficult to get the check when it's full house. The fish is always fresh and the portions are generous for NYC standard .. One star off for the fluctuating Chirashi order. Chirashi is my go-to item, but I noticed they keep switching the quantity of the fish cuts (some days I get 2 pieces of tuna whereas others I get 3) but they never quantify how many pieces I am supposed to get on the menu. It'd be great if there was some consistency so I don't get disappointed. Regardless, it hasn't stopped us from coming back, but does make it a bummed out situation when it happens. read more

Tenzan is on the upper tier of what I would refer to as mid-range sushi (between supermarket grade and Sushi Yasuda grade). The rolls are large, and usually have a great fish to rice ratio. I would say stick to the normal rolls and don't try to venture of into their specialty rolls because they usually aren't worth it. If you want to fill up, the crunchy rolls are delicious and very filling. The prices are also pretty reasonable for the quality of sushi they are bringing out. For the UES, its a great staple sushi restaurant. read more

Came here for dinner and ordered a salmon appetizer to share and the sukiyaki. Was tempted to get sushi, but had sushi earlier in the week. Appetizer was just meh because although the salmon had a nice texture, it did not taste fresh. It was better with soy sauce, not just the sauce provided, but soy should not be required to mask the fishy taste. I originally wanted the shrimp and vegetable tempura noodle soup but was disappointed to find that it was not on the menu. Sukiyaki was not quite what I expected. I thought it would be more of a saucy stir-fry than a noodle soup. Portion was huge however. It was bit odd with the broccoli and zucchini, veggies that are not usually in Japanese noodle soups. Mushrooms were good and plenty of seafood. Had a taste of my friend's sweet potato roll and it was surprisingly good! read more

I'm really not a fan. My boyfriend loves this place, but I've honestly experienced much better. The rolls are too big and are hard to eat/ swallow without gagging... that's my issue. If I'm out to dinner, I don't want to choke on my meal. There is a lot of fish in the rolls, I'll give them that, but sometimes I've found the sushi very fishy tasting (aka not fresh). There is also very little rice, so if seaweed isn't your thing, avoid, because you'll really taste it due to the lack of rice. Overall, there are better places to get sushi in this city, so I would avoid. read more

Very good midtown-east Japanese joint. If you can, get a table upstairs, where it's more quite. Their Chirashi was good, but your best bet (sushi-wise) is to get the sushi-sashimi combo for two (*not* the single one, which for some reason has a different selection for the roll, not as good). I am a big fan for many reasons. 1. The food is always fresh and good. I have had a few bad pieces of salmon but hey they don;t make it they buy it. Not their fault. 2. They are reasonably priced. Big portions and their original creations are huge like the sake roll. Lots of fish. Not skimpy. 3. Tenzan is the best sushi I have had to date in NYC and the surrounding area. We have been there twice now and boy, let me tell ya!! They have had THE freshest sushi we've ever eaten. I mean they were better than even Hotoke out on Long Island!! The all the rolls were great and the brown rice was wonderful and added a nice nutty flavor as usual!! Went here for dinner the other night. The fish is definitely fresh, and the place has a nice layout inside. The sake menu is limited, so feel free to deduct a point if you're a sake snob. Our waited recommended a decent bottle, so I was happy. The appetizers are good, but not exceptional. The sushi, and rolls were pretty standard stuff. Stopped here to eat before going to take the radio city Christmas spectacular. Decor and seating not very inviting, rather cold. (In temperature and personality) Good sushi not great. Service could be more attentive, but polite. Fish was very fresh. Sake could be better. My biggest problem was the front door tho. Every time it opened a huge wave of freezing air poured in and unless you're sitting all the way in the back, you're screwed. It's 38 degrees out and you can feel it when the door is opened every 10 minutes for the delivery guy. I had spicy yellow tail roll, the pieces were massive. Salmon roll was delicious and so was the eel cucumber hand roll. Bf had hamachi Kama which was good and a few other sushi pieces, overall good. Both had sake and he had sprite.
