We did the omakase for two on Tuesday night, January 6 at 7pm. My friend and I were genuinely shocked by how bad the food was, to the point that we were embarrassed sitting at the sushi bar and had to tell the staff to stop serving us because we were finished. We ordered the fried chicken appetizer and did not finish it. Other than the toro, we did not enjoy a single dish that was served. This was especially disappointing because we have both eaten at Sushi Seki UES before and had a very different experience. That said, we realized afterward that our last visit was probably seven to nine years ago, so this felt like a major decline rather than a one off issue. The total cost was around $280 all in, which made the experience even harder to swallow given the quality. We left deeply disappointed and unfortunately will not be returning. read more

I had a wonderful time at sushi seki! It's located on Restaurant Row and it is very spacious inside. The waiters are very attentive. We ordered a seaweed salad (not traditional green seaweed, but black seaweed) and dynamite shrimp to start off (delicious). I ordered a toro nigiri, shrimp tempura roll, and a blue crab roll. If (1) you don't audibly moan, (2) your eyes don't roll back in your head in pleasure or (3) you don't look at your dining companions with wide eyes and complete silence treasuring the glory of sweet sweet sushi during omakase... the restaurant is doing something wrong. Unfortunately, none of the above (or even close) occurred during our dinner here on a Friday night at 8PM. Had to knock down stars for (1) a completely inedible piece of fish (see below) and (2) the ridiculously high cost - "I've never walked out of a sushi place and felt robbed. That was straight up robbery". We paid $350 (pre-tip) for the worst omakase / sushi I've ever had. Frankly, I'd expect this kind of sushi from Penn Station or delivery from a place you vow to never order from ever again. I'm honestly shocked that Sushi Seki has a 4 star rating on Yelp/9.0 star on Infatuation. There are SO many better sushi places in this city; Sushi by Bou/Sushi by M/Sushi by Bae or any of the newer $50/10 piece omakases where the quality of the fish is literally 100x better than here for 1/3 of the cost. SETTING: very "no frills" sushi restaurant with a 12 seat sushi bar up front and two small tables, slightly bigger room for dining in the back. FOOD: the sushi here was not good. Yes, there were the few pieces that were OK quality cuts but overall I did not enjoy the omakase here for a lot of reasons. (1) some / majority of the sushi here was either super chewy, super bland or tasted just like sushi you'd get from any mediocre sushi spot (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg); (2) the timing of the pieces were off (like waiting 15 minutes for one piece then having three in a row put down in quick tandem with no break); (3) the various "toppings" used to garnish the fish (jalapeño sauce) really did NOT add to the fish (like the seared tomato + salmon piece I was looking forward to- try Tsushima in midtown east. THAT piece is worth writing about. The tomato here tasted burnt and funky / detracted from the salmon); There was a piece of clam served that was so chewy and tough to chew or swallow that I actually had to run to the bathroom to spit it out. It made me nauseous and spitting out my food? That has NEVER happened to me before, eating anything. Says a lot. SERVICE: disjointed. The omakase chefs behind the counter are intense to the point of being unfriendly and, two people are serving the entire 12 seat counter as well as the tables in the back. There were multiple moments of confusion where they're not sure of who's getting what, or the back is so busy you're sitting there waiting for your next piece after eating a pathetically small cut of horse mackarel/yellowtail/scallop (all not good). VERDICT: I really didn't want write this review in any vindictive way as I realize how hard it is to run a restaurant in the city and how bad reviews can deter customers. If you look at my other reviews I've never given 2 stars to a restaurant before and rarely give bad reviews. I'll always find ONE redeeming thing about a restaurant. But I really really just don't think it's okay for a restaurant to charge its patrons $350+ for such terrible quality sushi. I write this as a warning for other people who are just looking for a good omakase dinner- this is really not the place to spend your $$($$). It seems that it should have finished after 4 rounds (13 pieces total), because before our 5th round she asked "would you like sushi or hand roll for your next round?". Anyone who has tried Omakase elsewhere in the city knows that it's common to have a dish or two within the Omakase where you can select between a couple options, so it was not clear that our Omakase was over. After she brought out the 5th round we decided to clarify and it turns out that rounds 5 and 6 were NOT in fact part of the Omakase. Would have appreciated this to have been stated more clearly. Not as good as it use to be. Sushi seki was my first semi bougie sushi experience. I remember this place being bomb AF back in the day. However it is not nearly as good as it use to be anymore. Visited May 2021 and the sushi doesn't seem nearly as tasty and fresh as I remember it to be. My friend did not like uni so his omakase was a little less than mine after switching it out for toro. - good quantity, about 12 pieces with dessert - fish was fresh and filling. - nice twist to some of the sushi concoctions. CONS: - nothing bad honestly, it was good but it also didn't blow me away. Would I come back for it? Not the omakase, but definitely for sushi and esp if a friend wanted to try it. Sushi Seki has traditional sushi layout with seating and tables surrounding the sushi bar/chefs (aka the stars of the show). The quality is top notch here -- from the fish cut to the rice and the ratio of sushi to rice is great. As I mentioned with the decor, the sushi and other menu items are very traditional, no curve balls or towers of fancy ish. Items are on the pricier side, but not break the bank level so thats plus. Staff is very courteous and prompt. Although this is open late, I would say enjoy this in the best state of mind to really take in all the goodness. read more

We were seated in their little section in front of the sushi bar, probably the best seats in the house. We opted for 2 Omakases. Their menu ranges from basic take out sushi and cooked foods, as well as different higher quality types of fish. We thought the way they plated the Omakase was a bit odd. Both Omakase pieces were served on one plate, rather than 1 plate a person. The fish quality and rice were definitely up to par with other Omakase spots at the same price point. It's definitely a less intimate and personalized style of Omakase, probably a result of how busy they were. I think they focus less on the Omakase, and more on just volume. We were able to cater our own Omakase to how many pieces we wanted, it wasn't necessarily a set piece number. Nonetheless, it was worth a try! read more

TLDR: UES sushi bar for late night nigiri cravings. One of several Sushi Seki locations. Great for a la carte sushi but for omakase, there are better options to be had and for less money. Ah Sushi Seki, this is a long overdue review but I have mixed feelings here. The main reason I come to Sushi Seki is for when I want late night quality sushi. Craving that hand roll at 12:30 AM? Seki's got you covered. Their a la carte for this level of sushi is actually quite reasonable. My favorite things here are the hand rolls. The Spicy Scallop is their signature temaki, it's this wonderful concoction of fish roe, bay scallop, that spicy mayo and panko. It's wrapped in this delicately crispy nori shell that is just sublime. The hand rolls are very generously sized and for non-luxury (negitoro, uni) choices; $10 to $12 is very fair. So while I think their a la carte is awesome, ironically - I'm not a fan of the omakase. Their name is big enough that bar is consistently full but it just didn't do it for me. The first time I had the omakase, it was enjoyable but quite expensive. There is no set price, it's piece by piece. The second time I came back for omakase, we were literally done in 30 minutes. Now, I was hungry but this was a bit too fast for me. It was the literal definition of an omakase quickie. I felt like I walked in, they rapid-fired my nigiri and sent me on my way. They have several signature pieces (yes, you may recognize them for Gari) like the tuna and tofu sauce, the salmon tomato, the chopped eel and avocado, etc. I will say, that although Gari did it first; Seki's salmon tomato is better. There's something about that slice of king salmon and this perfectly charred, peppered tomato on top.. it's just incredible. The seared toro and onion sauce was good but more of a piece where the ingredients do the work. The style here is more modern/fusion so if that's what you're looking for - I think Sushi Dojo/Ishikawa hold a better value. Gari is my favorite for modern though. Seki is my jam for a la carte and late night cravings. For omakase though, I think there's a lot better options for experience and definitely for price. read more

A bit pricey but that is probably partly the inflation we are experiencing now. Disappointed that the Chirashi bowl did not come with Japanese pickles as I am used to. I live very close to this location and finally made it in for dinner with some friends and was EXTREMELY happy with my experience. First off I highly recommend making a reservation as we saw multiple groups of people show up without one and we're not able to be seated. Everything we had was fresh and delicious. We started off with some miso soup and the maguro avocado which was SO delicious. For dinner I got the sushi special and my friend got the Sushi Seki special. Every piece of fish was super fresh and delicious and my friend who got the Sushi Seki special really enjoyed all of the fun toppings. Prices are very much worth the quality of food you're getting. I came to sushi seki for my first omakase experience and it did not disappoint! First, we got some appetizers and the fried chicken was very good, flavorful and tender. Then, the first omakase dish came out and I was stunned by the presentation, very pretty! That tuna was absolutely MIND-BLOWING! It was my first time having tuna that didn't taste fishy and it just melted in my mouth. Every single piece of sushi I had was so tasty, I couldn't stop smiling. On the next plate, my favorite was the oyster! It was so tasty and the seaweed added great flavor as well. On the next plate, I was scared to have their uni because of a past experience but it was actually sweet and very good! It made me realize I just didn't have quality sushi before. I really like the scallop nigiri as well and the hand roll was delicious! I was so full but needed to try their dessert and I was shocked that even the dessert was AMAZING. I almost ordered a second one, I believe it was a chocolate panna cotta. The service was great too, I have no complaints. Each piece was explained by the server and they made sure to accommodate our requests, each of us had different ones. Went last night and they don't close till 12:30 the waiter Danny came over and said it's last call for drinks so my friend and I got two more rounds of drinks and then Danny put the bill in front of us it was only 12. What a terrible experience I will not be back. The chef looked horrified when Danny spoke to us that way even the other people there were in shock. Customer service is very important but unfortunately their staff lacks that and it was very embarrassing to be treated that way. After reading other reviews I see a lot of people say the same thing about the staff. I called to speak to a manager and still haven't heard back. The best thing about sushi is no doubt eating it. At Seki, one of the more popular sushi spots on the Upper East side, you don't have the opportunity to eat the sushi. Supposedly the uni and tuna are fresh, but we wouldn't know. Made a reservation here for 830, and waited almost 2 hours for our food. Really wish that this location lived up to the hype of the other locations, but ultimately, this place is full because they coast off of a 10+ year old reputation and take advantage of people willing to wait. Sushi Seki is our go to place when we want good tasting sushi delivery, and are willing to pay slightly more. It's hard for me to put my finger on it, but it seems the fish is just of higher quality. We go for either rolls, classic sushi (nigiri) pieces of the more unique ones, all are great, and we keep coming back to Sushi Seki after trying other local joints. We usually try some of the none sushi dishes, but those are hit or miss in our opinion. Taking her word for it, the sushi was fantastic. I ordered a chicken teriyaki dish which I must say was some of the best I've had. We split a few appetizers (Yakatori was tender and tasty), and then shared an assortment of sushi. Our particular favorites were the scallop sushi with a hint of sea salt and lemon, the salmon sushi with baked tomato, and the fatty tuna.
