Great place to go if you are craving Thai food by kits beach! I only got the mango sticky rice to go which was under $6 which I think is totally reasonable and headed down to the beach to enjoy my dessert! The rice was sooo warm and the mango was just the right amount of ripeness so easily a 5/5 for me! I cant speak much on any of their other dishes because I haven't gotten food here in years but from what I remember it's pretty good. Overall the location is also what makes this place so ideal because it's right across from the beach so you can take your food to-go and enjoy it anywhere along Kits beach. read more

The dishes are hit and miss in terms of authenticity. I guess it depends on what you order. I had the pad pra pao chicken which is my standard dish to gauge if the restaurant is able to make Thai food like in Thailand. It is a very basic dish which most Thais can cook. The best one I had was in an alley in Bangkok at a makeshift restaurant. It has been decades and I still remember it. I did not specify the spice level and I was pleasantly surprised to find it came spicy. Good spicy like in Thailand. A small dish of cut chilis was served on the side to up the spice level further. It was so good! So I went back and ordered the pad Thai to go. I also got a frozen entree (green curry chicken). The pad Thai was a disappointment. It had a ketchup taste which made the dish terrible. I guess it had been altered to suit the locals' taste here. Definitely not authentic at all. Reminded me of another Thai place I went to years ago and I was told that was how pad Thai tasted like in HK, ketchup based. The frozen entree was on the small side but at $5.95, it was understandable. The green curry chicken was flavorful and quite good. I would buy a few of these frozen entrees and keep in my freezer. It is quite perfect if you are in the mood for Thai food and do not want to order in or travel out. Decent, cheap and cheerful Thai food, close to the beach! I've been here many times, for lunches dinners and take away to bring to the beach, or delivery. Everyone else has raised their prices, but these lovely people have not. I usually get the combo, which is a curry with rice, a spring roll and a mini salad. My favourite is either red curry with tofu or Penang with tofu. You can also get tofu with basil or pad thai. They'd all yummy! You can have any protein you want (beef, chicken, prawns), but I've only tried the veggie options. If you're coming with bigger group you can get share plates and have lots of flavour. Last night I had the Penang curry with tofu and it was great! It's a very quick and efficient place. It's small but they do have a little patio on the side if you want to be outside. So, I think having Thai food across from kits beach is probably the cheapest way to feel like you're in Thailand, while still being right here in Vancouver. We ordered online and got an appetizer and two entrées. Make sure that you get the specific location that you are picking up at as there are a few locations. After you pay online the tip is charged. Vancouver is spoiled for choice in the Thai cuisine department, so settling on a place is challenging task. I chose this establishment because I wanted to get takeout and watch the sunset at Kits Beach (albeit in the late fall chill, but still, one takes the clear days as they come here). I came in well in advance of the dinner rush, at about 5pm, ordered pad kee mao (wide flat noodles, chicken, Thai basil, peppers, tomatoes, chilies). Within about 10 seconds, the whole space was filled with the funky perfume of fish sauce, and within about 60 seconds, my meal was prepped and packaged up. Seriously, these people are fast. I was pleasantly surprised to see fresh green peppercorns mingled in with the other veggies. The dish itself was amped up in the spice department, and while passingly tasty in the moment, proved far too oily for me to eat as leftovers the next day. Quick, cheap, and so delicious. I love coming here after a day at the beach. Ordered the 33. entree combo with the tofu cashew dish. Not a fan of mushrooms or onions, so they substituted more carrots and peppers, no problem. My only note is that I had assumed the dish was vegan (I have had it before), but for whatever reason, I mentioned I was vegan to the gentleman taking my order, and he said "so no fish sauce?" which I guess means the dish isn't vegan unless you ask. Great location across from Kits beach but wish the food would match up. I've tried it several items during lunch time, eggplant/tofu, ground chicken, pad Thai and some of their Thai curries. All of it is good, and food comes out quick but their prices have increased, which I guess is to be expected as food costs have increased. Affordable and delicious. Thai Basil has SO many menu options that I didn't know what to choose, but I finally decided on the Pad Thai (extra peanuts of course) with chicken subbed for the tofu. My friend got the yellow curry. Both were very good and flavourful. Really good location if you are looking to spend some time at Kits beach. The actual restaurant is on the smaller side, but we just got our food to go and ate it on the grassy area of kits beach. Friendly staff and pretty short wait times. Super affordable and tasty Thai option for a quick bite! This specific location is right across from the beach which is an absolutely killer view - attached!!!! We ordered chicken satay app, pad Thai, red curry special and mango sticky rice for dessert! I also got the Thai iced tea which was my first time trying AND NOW MY NEW FAVE DRINK. This wouldn't pass muster at the most vanilla of back packer restaurants in KSR, let alone for koon thai. Green curry was as bland as I've ever had. Som tom didn't seem to have been pounded and had no flavor. Larb had only a hint of herb. "BKK pad Thai" was true only to the 20 bhat version served to drunk farang. The counter staff were perfectly nice. But the food is just terrible beyond the point of any fair excuse. Roughly the equivalent of serving poutine with cold gravy from a pouch and American cheese. Yellow curry. Why is the chicken not hot or warm but, the potatoes and sauce are hot? Pretty good dish usually. Today I thought I would have Pad Thai. It is usually good. They were very busy and 1st they walked up to my table and confirmed my order which is odd. That has never happened before. I finally get my pad Thai and the shrimp is warm, not hot. Only the noodles were semi warm. The tofu was room temperature too. There is some burnt kinda odd egg mixed in. I complained and the lady smiled, and tried to walk away. I asked for a new order and she came back with my order reheated in a microwave. I was unhappy, and demanded my money back. They gave me my money back. Budget Thai! Ok... after my first review, I've had constantly bad experience regarding their service. This place is a MESS when it gets busy!!! I stayed about 30min or more at the line and people that ordered Online came by, skipped the entire line to pick up and to pay for the order. Yup! PAY FOR THE ORDER! I don't get why they think they can do it. It is basically what I was doing but not skipping the line: ask for the food and pay. If they were skipping the line to just pick up an order that was already paid, sure, makes sense. But if people needs to pay, they need to go to the 30min line like everybody else. And that's why the long wait! Because nobody respects the line! I see that pretty often and the business accepts this behavior and does nothing about that. My suggestion is put a sign saying "pick up and not paid yet? Get the line". It is another 30 min waiting for food to be done. I have seen people complaining about the long wait on that as well. If they keep this lack of organization, I suggest to just go to the beach, order the food, relax for 30min then go back there, skip the long line, pay and leave. Done! read more

This is a hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurant across from Kit's beach that is quite wonderful. Very reasonable prices and the food is at your table in minutes after ordering. Definitely one of the best deals in town. Everything we have had there has been amazing. There is another Thai Basil in the West End on Thurlow. Also very good, but limited seating.
