Thai Fresh is a neighborhood restaurant that is friendly and offers amazing food. They are popular so parking may be tough but there is enough street parking and walking over is easy and we even go for a walk in the neighborhood when we are done. The staff is amazing. They are always attentive and would check in to make sure we didn't need anything. Now that the weather is cooling off we will be sitting outside. Highly recommend and if the parking lot if full its because they are popular. Just park on the street and stroll over. read more

The food was very good! So many choices, however it felt like the AC was broken and the service was suuuuper slow. If it weren't for the service I'd give it 4 stars. I love their huge menu of coffees, and they have a bakery section full of decadent cakes and goodies. Authentic Thai place with authentic Thai food that's mostly gluten-free friendly EXCEPT they share their fryer with gluten-filled items, so their chicken and waffle is absolutely not gluten free. Now, do they change their oil daily, well I didn't ask. Maybe? Maybe not? That's something I would not risk because of my Celiac disease. I mean even if they did, my follow up question will be, do you scrub the fryer? And then it'll just become this whole thing. So my advice to all true gluten-free fellow is to stay awaY from it. I mean, is it really worth the calories? As for the menu, we went during breakfast, so relatively limited. Not sure if their menu changes seasonally. Cuz only in town for vacation. As for food, we had the chicken with rice that's one of the family's favorite. It was a very basic asian dish. It's like the brine white meat chicken you see hanging by those chinese eateries, and rice is rice, but what made it stood out was the sauce you pour on top of it. Was it enough for me to say wow? No, not really. But it did make the dish tasty and Thai. Will I order it again? Maybe, only because I love brine white meat chicken and rice, with it without the sauce. Will I recommend it? Not sure, because if I were to recommend something or even someone they better be bomb-ass. The other dish we had was the thai omelette served with white rice. It was recommended by the server, sounded sketched to me at first, cuz like I can make an omelette at home, but really I can't make this omelette at home. It's the sauce/pork/tomatoes/egg combination that made it really tasty. Lots of onions, not a big fan of onions, but didn't omit it because SO loves onions and it does add a layer of flavor to the dish. This I would recommend if you like all the ingredients listed above. Very tasty and definitely not an ordinary omelette. Although not going to lie, it sounded very ordinary. Oh, but the black coffee tasted very nutty and smooth. We also had their gluten free pastry to go, cheesecake and rice crispy, but had it pretty late and drunk, so cannot comment much on it. We live nearby and can't believe it took us so long to visit! I love the coziness of the inside dining area although they also have a small outdoor patio and a couple picnic tables. We went for Sunday brunch and loved that it wasn't packed and loud like many places. I had the chicken and rice brunch special which sounds very simple but was delicious. The sauce that it comes with is amazing, and our waiter was happy to bring more. The portions were huge - plenty to take home for another meal. I'd love to try some of the other brunch specials like the fried chicken and waffles as well as the more traditional Thai dishes. We'll definitely be back! It is very expensive for what this place is. I was informed that gratuity was included in the cost.. only AFTER leaving a 20% tip. You have to order everything through your phone which is a hassle, including being nickel and dimed on condiments. Seriously, .20 for Siracha and you need manually add chopsticks to your order. I've come to Thai Fresh on a lot of occasions but felt pretty disappointed with my last visit. The portion size of their chicken wings appetizer was ridiculously small, overall food quality felt low, and our wait times were very long for getting the check and boxes at the end. My family loves this place but... I am not a fan. I got the green curry with beef. I was so excited to try this!!! Unfortunately when I took my first bite all I tasted was the spice.... Not complaining about that. I love spicy food and typically love it HOT. So... Check... It did have a lot of heat. Unfortunately that was it for flavor. It was totally missing any depth of flavors. It hardly had even a hint of the expected base flavors in a green curry.... Just heat. Very shallow flavors.... Had eggplant and mushrooms for the 2 veggies.... Both well over cooked and very mushy. For protein, I had "beef" It reminded me of those kibble sized "meat squares" you see pictured on cheap canned soup. It was rather tasteless tough little squares of protein. At one point I even questioned if it was beef or chicken. Not good. To make things worse it was served with overcooked white rice that was mushy. Haven't been here in about 15 years, because back then, I thought their Thai food was very pedestrian and not really well flavored. I dropped in for coffee to-go and was very surprised at how different it is now. They have an entire coffee shop connected to the restaurant. The shop itself is spacious with lots of tables and a warm feel inside. There were a number of people working, eating and drinking in there. The drip coffee was meh. Fruity, weak, and most notably, tepid, not hot like coffee should be. At $3 for a 12oz cup, it should at least be hot. Also, fixing my coffee was weird. They had a "condiment bar" area set up, but it's set up for diners, not coffee. They had to take a creamer container from the fridge especially for me to fix my coffee. Then, I looked for the sugar, and they have to put that out especially for me to use at the beverage pick-up area. It was really odd and inconvenient to have to ask for each thing once I figured out those things weren't already set out someplace. The service was decent, not friendly, but not rude. They did their jobs which I was completely fine with. I noticed on my receipt that they don't accept tips, because they pay their employees a living wage. Way to go Thai Fresh! I got the classic Pad See Ew here, and it was... almost inedible. It was so sweet and so salty. I tremble thinking about exactly how much oil, sugary sauce, MSG, and salt they dumped into this. Sadly, this place has really gone downhill. It's still good for takeout if they are actually accepting orders, but the in-person dining experience is terrible. They seem to be severely understaffed, and the employees who are there seem very unhappy about it. No eye contact, no smiles, no follow-up -- but lots of attitude. So, here's the experience: you wait for a table to open up and then you seat yourself. In theory, you scan the QR code on the table to order. Our two-top didn't have a code and the one at the table next to us wouldn't scan. So we had to take turns waiting in line to order at the counter inside because we didn't want to lose our table. I ordered veggie egg rolls and soup, so those came out fairly quickly; but my friend's food took more than an hour to come out, so she watched me eat and then I watched her eat. Two times she asked about her meal while she was waiting, and both times was told the kitchen was swamped. Once you get your food you're on your own, but they still have service charges factored into their prices (although the counter still shamelessly has a tipping screen at payment). Water service is also do-it-yourself, but the outdoor jug was empty, so we had to track down water inside. In summary, you are paying high prices for slow, unhappy service. read more

I was excited to try Thai Fresh again, supporting the idea of the company paying living wages to their employees and ordered two curries online tonight. The order went through, I received a confirmation email and my s.o. went to pick it up. My s.o. came home disgruntled from the counter service, with one singular (small pint of) curry for $17+. Seeing the price online and getting something too small to share as a main course wasn't great. Yes, my s.o. could and should have checked the take out bag. That's on us, as paying customers- check what you're getting before going out the door. We live farther away from the restaurant- I called to figure out what happened and to see what solution could be offered. The way their employees treat their customers is on them. The person answering the restaurant's phone was condescending and rude. I gave him the last 4 digits of the card used and he stated that my order was a singular curry. Why do I have an email with both orders, clear as day? I was put on hold and the restaurant's representative answered with "Well what do you want me to do?" - and then he started laughing at me. Honestly? I wanted an apology. That was what I really wanted. At the least, some empathy, at the most a 'come down and have a soda/tea on us.' Nothing special. Thanks for messing up my dinner plans. Dropped by this little coffeeshop-restaurant after an early-morning workout to grab some brunch. Since it was their first day open after the Christmas break, unfortunately their kitchen wasn't open or prepared to handle orders. The notice on their website definitely said that they would be resuming normal hours after the Christmas break, so it was a little disappointing. I came specifically for their curry tacos, which came highly recommended. Instead, we ordered some of their Thai omelette vegetarian tacos, which comes with Asian-style scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, cilantro, and soy sauce. I personally loved the taste, since I've had this kind of egg before, but my friend didn't enjoy them as much. Just be forewarned that they will not taste like normal scrambled eggs - they have a much stronger onion taste and that sour-but-tangy taste from the soy sauce. The tacos were also on the smaller size - I ate mine in four bites. Service was a little subpar; we sat down at a table and were not serviced for a while. We didn't know that we had to go to the counter to order, but apparently there is no wait service for breakfast. We were only one of three parties in a large room, so it wasn't like they didn't see us either. Ambiance was your typical industrial-hipster style. I liked the little mason jar ceiling lights. Would I come again? Maybe if I happened to be in the area, since I'm ovo-vegetarian and they have a pretty delicious-sounding menu. But prices are definitely on the higher side for the quality and portion size you're getting. read more

Thai fresh! I've read so much about you, and yet, I come away unimpressed. I'm not a fan of pre-made food anyway and considering "fresh" is in the name, well, it seems like a misnomer. That's how this spot works. I can see how it's convenient for them -- limited menu, pre-made for the lunch rush and no need to deliver at the table but it makes it a shaky three stars. Here's the deal: I can microwave food at home. And though items like curries are easily reheated, noodles are not. So the red curry I got had excellent flavor but the noodles with beef were sticky and thick and quickly got cold again. And for $14, it wasn't exactly a bargain. The space is adorable, Jam is quite nice as multiple people have stated and looks like they also make fresh desserts for you folks with a sweet tooth out there. One note: If you want to take home your food, be prepared to pay for the container. Yep. It's 25 cents since they're microwaveable and reusable. Neither I nor my dining companion had a quarter... so I just left half my food there. You know what else I left with? The feeling that this is never going to be on my top go to spots. Yes it is warm inside the restaurant. Yes the ambiance is more coffee shop like than like a restaurant. But it gives it that South Austin quirky feel. Yes it is on the pricey side. But they use quality ingredients, many of which are locally sourced and organic. I joined a friend who is on a GF diet here and enjoyed a nice lunch. They serve a large offering of GF and non-GF menu items. I wanted a lighter meal so I opted for the Tom Yum soup and the papaya salad. The salad has a tangy flavor from the lime juice, fish sauce, tamarind water, palm sugar and Thai chili dressing. Both were incredibly flavorful and felt very guilt free. While we devoured our healthy food we saw someone being served their "World's Best Chicken Wings Ever" and instantly had food envy. We both vowed to split that dish on our next visit. It looked and smelled so good! They use Vital Farm's organic chicken marinated with garlic, cilantro & peppercorn. They recently increased their pricing to account for paying their employees more fairly. So I admire this. But if you are going to want to charge more to pay your employees then make sure they are deserving of it and now earning their pay. I did a to go order. Asked for pork belly sandwich but no bread on kale salad with sticky rice. I got two flavorless pieces of mediocre pork belly that they charged me $13 but didn't give me anything else that should have come with the sandwich on a tiny bed of salad for $3 extra which was good and a tiny glob of sticky rice for $2 extra. Total for this was almost $18. I don't see this being worth it regardless of what ingredients they use. I have travelled quite a bit over the years and have been to Thailand. This is not authentic thai food though which is ok as long as it is yummy. Their bakery looks good and its mostly gluten free which is also good. It all started going downhill when we opened up the rice box; it looked like it had been smeared into the takeout container by a four year old. The rice was overcooked and mushy. Will you just trust me to know my own spice tolerance and you'll make it super spicy like I asked, or will you think I'm just some silly white girl who can't handle spice and so you say you'll make it spicy, but then you hand me a plate of definitely not spicy food?) I really don't get this place. I embrace the whole locally sourced and farmed foods; but that's where Thai Fresh looses its fizz. Lets start with the chef's case. You are attempting to maintain a temperature 38 degrees) at least according to the health department. Putting steaming hot dishes directly off the fire doesn't exactly make the grade especially with such a small case. The food proved another disappointment. The pad thai, drunken noodles, mussamin curry, red curry, yellow curry, and pineapple shrimp were just MEH. All the curries were greasy, the noodles were overcooked, and the shrimp which looked the most appealing in the case was served cold. $25 for a meal that I would never order again. In fact if I did it all over again; you see me at Madam Mam's you know where they prepare dishes to order. Ambiance was lacking that critical BEEP BEEP BEEP; sorry I had to finish my thought after the tower of microwaves finished cooking someones meal. Never mind on the whole ambiance thing. Water vessels that sat on the counter since after lunch. Not a pair of chopsticks in sight, I considered walking out the door and molesting some bamboo near the fence to get some sticks. Frankly when you have to explain the concept as soon as you walk in the door; its probably not a great idea. Some ideas for places look really good on paper; but this place has some identity issues. Some ideas I'm just throwing out here: Get rid of the tables and just sell take out. That way its the purchasers choice if they reheat it in the microwave. I tried (keyword) having dinner on a Sunday night here based on a friend's recommendation. It wasn't a busy night at all (the restaurant was just about half-full). I was feeling pretty excited as the hostess took me to my table. She left me the menus and told me the name of my server. I then started perusing the main menu. After ten minutes of doing just that, no one came to my table to even give me water. I thought to myself, maybe they're busier than it looks. Fine, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited a bit more. I went back to reading the menu. After reading the same item on the menu for the umpteenth time, still no one came to my table.. That's when I realized.. On my table, there's a card that says Thai Fresh is doing away with tips (their reasoning's so they can share the tips with the whole crew yadi yadi yada)!! Aha.. I thought. I re-read the menu again, and whaddya know! The prices are pretty jacked up (for a Thai food, they're uber expensive). Nice! So now, I got no service, but I still have to pay. ugh.. In hindsight (20/20 they say), I should have just left right then and there. But I'm a patient guy, plus the friend recommending me told me the food is really good, so against my better judgment (and the wailing of my empty belly), I waited a bit more. Not too long after, a server (my server?) finally came with a glass and a bottle of water. She asked me ever so casually if someone else was joining me. I just smiled (not in a mocking way) and told her that I was dining solo. She asked if I needed some more time, to which I replied, I needed a quick rundown of the menu as it's my first time. She quickly explained and then politely said that she's going to give me a couple more minutes to decide.. Excited to get good food soon, I quickly made a decision on food not too long after she left.. She would come back in the few minutes, right? WRONG!!! The server never came back.. ever.. I waited for another 30 minutes or so after she left. Then, it was too late for me, and I was getting quite hangry too. I'm not the kind of guy who likes to make a scene although it was completely not my fault. So in this case, I just let it slip and left the restaurant without a peep. All in all, I waited for more than an hour before deciding collapsing from hunger wasn't worth getting the supposedly awesome food from Thai fresh. They say they're doing away with tipping so that it's fair for everyone, but all I experienced was that it just makes the server lazy. I guess Thai fresh won't be getting my business anytime soon (or ever). I went to Sap's for dinner instead (which actually was the one I wanted to go to in the first place.. before I asked my friend).. And the whole ordeal was done in less than an hour (from seating to check). Food was great and way cheaper than Thai fresh (including tips too). My server at Sap's was nice too and asked to come back next time! Well, yes sir, I will always go there for Thai now. read more

Ordered the Tom Kha soup with tofu and love the flavors of the lemongrass and galangal. However, the tofu might have worked better soft rather than fried. We ordered the massamun curry, mixed veggie stir fry, and pad thai as our entrees. These were mediocre- lots of salt in my veggie stir fry. The massamun curry didn't taste like massamun curry but was quite flavorful. Pad thai was decent but had no peanuts . Tofu in all dishes was hard again. Desserts were really good from the bakery next door. I ordered a pumpkin pie bar, and the french chocolate silk pie which were both coconuty and delicious! Oh, they are quite pricey but the tips are factored into the cost so we ended up paying ~$70 for 3 of us. read more
