Not too spicy to me...just right. Met Jam, the owner/chef and her husband and son. I enjoyed the atmosphere but went when it wasn't crowded (5:30 pm), so others might have a hard time when it's busy as there are only three tables. I can't remember the last time I left a restaurant and felt like the food was actually doing my body good. The food is good, but the setup of the place is beyond odd. You walk into Thai Fresh and are told to go next door to the adjoining coffee shop to order. Once you hunt down a menu, you order at the counter and are given a number. You sit and wait and it seems the people bringing out the food are perpetually confused as to which table the food should actually go to. I had the Masaman curry with tofu and brown rice and it was awesome. But no chopsticks? Weird to me. You also have to get your own water, silverware, napkins, and take out containers. Not a huge deal in a true "quick casual" spot, but for an $11 curry with tofu (and anything with meat was at least $3 more), I'd expect a little more in terms of a table setup. This place seems to be suffering from sort of an identity crisis, like it can't decide whether it wants to be an actual restaurant or a random coffee shop that also serves pretty good Thai food. Plus, the night we went, the restaurant portion of the space was having an open mic night. It was so loud in there you couldn't sit there if you actually wanted to have a conversation while eating. The food here is ok and given that this place is within walking distance from my home, I was excited at the prospect of a cool coffee shop and thai place nearby! The chicken satay sandwich is pretty good and I've ordered it several times. However, there have def been some inconsistencies - the sandwich is a different size almost every time - sometimes it's huge and sometimes it is barely half a sandwich! Maybe it depends on how much bread they have for the day? Also, on two separate occasions, they have charged more than what is listed on the menu for the same exact thing. Check your receipts!! I could handle that if it was the only problem, but the worst thing is the service. You have to order food at the register but the cashier will easily let you stand there for minutes on end without so much as a hello while they are aimlessly wandering around behind the counter. (Then they overcharge you). There's also this creepy dude in a leather vest walking around looking all pissed off - I think he is the owner but he's pretty unfriendly and just as unhelpful if you need something. All in all, I think the food is overpriced for the inconsistency, lack of helpful service, the fact that you have to order at a confusing coffee counter and get your own utensils and condiments. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I can't stop moaning when I eat their Coconut Soup with Shrimp ... they don't over cook the meat like most places. And I can get it with Brown Rice! It's just perfect and fresh! It's one of the few Thai places you can get super quality ingredients and know you are eating healthy AND it will taste amazing. I love that they have healthy options (ie. Brown Rice, Grass Fed Beef, free range local Chicken Eggs, etc) AND if you want a sweet treat you can do it Gluten Free or Dairy Free. The food is great here. Love the fact that it's essentially just an open kitchen and obviously fresh ingredients. It's a little odd that they don't have a consistent menu, in the sense that you can't just walk in and order anything you want. They make everything in large batches, so you never really know what will be available when you get there, but in many ways that makes it better. I've tried several dishes that I wouldn't have otherwise and so far everything has been pretty darn good. My favorite by far, was the PadThai, which I was lucky enough to walk in right when it was coming off the stove and it was...freaking amazing. Thai Fresh has a good atmosphere and really good ice creams. The food is ok, but the kitchen is pretty irregular: sometimes ok, sometimes greasy/oily and time to time they deliver even burned food. Not healthy. The staff is also irregular: some nice guys and a couple of snob/unfriendly guys, including the manager or owner. There were one time that I was there with a group of friends eating and chatting for a while and we didn't notice that they were about to close. The owner simply turned off the light and left the dinning room, without asking us politely to leave or anything. Really unnecessarily sassy and rude. Don't cross the city over to eat there - there are nicer places around for healthier and well prepared food. Five stars just for the ice creams. Serious identity crisis plagued by service mishaps and outrageous prices. Thai food is mediocre at best. Service is horrible. Desserts are fantastic! Instead of Thai Fresh, a more appropriate name would be, "Desserts With a Kitchen." That way they would highlight their strengths, and people would know not to expect much out of the kitchen. Been here a few times, sometimes for a quick meal on the way home, sometimes to eat while working with my laptop for a couple hours. So I have had my own experience and witnessed many other customers' experiences here. I was quite shocked. They do serve Pad Thai and Tom Yum Soup, but in my opinion, Thai menu items does not automatically make this a "Thai" restaurant. The food does not taste Thai. The "Thai" food is often served with a layer of oil at the bottom of the dish, so expect to go fork-diving into the "pool" for the last few bites. I personally feel icky whenever food is served with grease. The spicy soup was low on flavor. The coconut soup is pretty tasty, one of the rare gems in this place, at least until the woman next to me pulled out long piece of hair in her soup. Okay, that is gross. The owner brought her another soup, saying only, "How did that get in there?" without offering any apology. I was appalled. The portions of a single plate are fairly small, about half the size of what I would expect from a "Thai" restaurant. Maybe they're trying to give small portions to be cute or fancy, but the quality of the food and variety of menu selections are neither cute nor fancy. It's just plain. The ordering process is often a mess. Employees never smile, often have multitasking problems, and sometimes just stand around when large lines form. If the owner is nearby, he will never offer to help take orders or answer the phone, but rather pace existentially. As a customer, if you stand in line for a while, hope a customer shares a menu with you. The menus are located in a non-obvious spot near the desserts, 10 feet away from the register, so if you cannot take your eye off the delicious sugary treats, you will get to the front of the line without any idea what's on the menu. Then you have to backtrack, losing your place in line. The menu print is small and multiple pages, kind of like you're ordering from a fancy restaurant, which also complicates and slows the ordering process. The staff is often forgetful and the owner never helps take orders. I had one of my orders completely forgotten for 20 minutes until I went up to ask where it was. I was the only person in the restaurant at that time, so it is strange my order was forgotten. During other visits, I also observed other people's orders messed up. I did notice they often tried to make good on their mistakes by offering customers free tea or ice cream. The owner is often seen walking about, sometimes serving food if your number is visible. He will never smile nor offer you a fork. This means after you have been comfortably waiting for your food, when it finally arrives, you then have to stand up, walk around, and find where they keep the forks. This brings me to the forks. Why on earth would they tuck the silverware bin in the corner of the restaurant, nowhere near the register? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the forks & napkins available for people to grab as they place their order, so they can have them when they find a seat? The atmosphere is very nice, often with good live loungy musicians playing in front of mostly empty tip jars. The desserts are also fantastic, very pricey (about $4 to $6 for a slice of pie), but one of the only things in the whole place actually worth the price. Free wifi works very well. Good spot to get some work done on the laptop, but just remember the food prices are high. Overall: 2 out of 5. I *really* want to love this place. It has SO much potential, but there are, unfortunately, so many strikes against it right now. My advice, come here between 8-9:30 at night for dessert after you eat elsewhere. While in town for a conference, we decided to give this place a try after reading so many good reviews. A couple of things first; the setup is kind of confusing when you walk in and the air conditioning was either broken or just not low enough. Now, on to the food. We ordered a chicken satay sandwich for our son, green curry with chicken for me, and pad Thai with no sprouts for my wife. Our food did not all come out at the same time. In fact, from the first delivered to the last, it was almost 10 minutes. The entire time, I held off on eating mine until the others arrived. My green curry was good, although a little too spicy. My son's sandwich was too spicy for him to eat, so we have to go get him something else. The last dish, the pad Thai with no sprouts became the bane of our existence. The first time it came out...completely last...it contained sprouts. We took it back and were told that it would take about 3 minutes to get another. 7 minutes later, another was delivered to our table. This time, the chicken was undercooked and pink. Back to the kitchen once more. Finally, as I finished mine, my wife's dish was delivered and although the chicken was still on the rare side of completely done, she ate it like a trooper and moved on. Popped in here to grab a quick soup to go, the counter guy barely acknowledged me, seemed to be trying to hurry me up. I paid my $11 (for soup) and waited patiently for 10 minutes. Once I was finally given the soup I checked and there was nothing else in there. Hello? When someone orders something to go, of course, you should include napkins and utensils! I had a good lunch here, don't quite understand all the low reviews. I ordered the special (a chicken sandwich) but the chef came out and found me and said they were out so I subsituted it for the beef sandwich instead. No big deal. It was delicious and more expensive anyways. The salad on the side was really fresh with lots of good veggies and a tasty peanut sauce. The kombucha was definitely over priced for the super small glass I got but it wasn't bad. I didn't mind the mismatched chairs, it's eclectic people! Yep, you read that right: My FIRST visit. Why?! Why did I wait so long to try this place that I'd only heard great things about? I love Thai food. I love freshness. And Hell, this place has BOTH of those things IN ITS NAME, for Pete's sake! Why had I been denying myself the red tofu curry with just the right amount of spicy heat to it? And the other noodle-y/basily/chicken-y dish I got that was also spectacular and whose name I can't recall--how come I'd not experienced it sooner and many times over?! I live right around the corner from Thai Fresh, so I was pretty excited when it opened. The take-out option was a bit confusing to me- I actually wish they'd just wrap up the dining-in plates to go rather than charging by the pound. Two medium portions only cost me about 11 bucks, however. The pad thai was pretty good, but not my favorite. I loved the chicken coconut soup, though. The food was very fresh- the guy who rang me up said it had just been made about 45 minutes before. I'm assuming they change out their choices, because there was no mango sticky rice to be found. When we walked in there isn't any real direction on where to go to order. It says order at the coffee cafe but then he menus are kind of hidden. My boyfriend ordered the fried chicken and I got chicken fried rice. However, as much as I really wanted this place to be one of my new favorite spots... It fell short. My boyfriends chicken was burnt and my chicken fried rice was full of fatty pieces of chicken that were chewy and it was super greasy for me. I happened into here by chance when driving through the neighborhood. I've come back twice for the coconut noodles (don't remember the exact name of the dish), which are just perfect! The fact that they were microwaved doesn't bother me so much. I love it so much, I tried to replicate the dish at home. (Couldn't get it). The service is hit or miss and the set-up is very eclectic. There is a variety of seasonally fresh Asian produce and imports as well as some randomly stocked locally-sourced items like soap and tea (a bit random, but a VERY Austin thing to do!) I love this place. I think it's the most authentic Thai food I've had outside of Thailand. I also really enjoy that they have so many of the ingredients for sale that are crucial to making the most authentic Thai dishes (palm sugar, pickled radish, soft tamarind). I agree the pastries are priced a bit steep (but very tasty!!). I respect that they are paying their staff living wages and anyone who doubts it -- if they weren't it would be exposed within day by a disgruntled staff member so stop being so grumpy and doubtful!! The curries/noodles really aren't priced so differently from other places. Also if you're taught to cook Thai recipes by a Thai person and you happen to be a white/Hispanic line cook working at a Thai restaurant it doesn't make your restaurant "inauthentic". Once...this used to be my favorite lunch spot, and the legendary Chicken Satay sandwich was big, full of chicken, and came on hearty bread. Freshly prepared from organic local ingredients this morning then microwaved and accompanied by crispy old rice for dinner. The 'art' of microwaving was not even up to par, but dare I ask for them to nuke my food longer? The texture and complexity of the massaman curry, a thin lukewarm gravy and cold-to-the-bone chicken, was made even more surprising to the palate with every crunchy bite of rice. Before I mention the negative review, I want to say that the only thing I like about this place is the dessert options. For gluten free and vegan - They Are Amazing. Not mind blowing. I ordered the Pad Thai, the Pad Sea Ew, the Red Curry and the Pork Satay sandwich. The Pad Thai did not come with all the aromatics shown in the photo online, the curry did not come with the side of cucumbers show in the photo online, the curry had like 3 small pieces of the protein chosen, and was Spicy, which was not what the cashier said when I asked if it was spicy. The noodle dishes had basically no veggies, so basically my stomach was a solid ball of sweet sticky noodles, which is not FRESH - and certainly not worth $12! Not even $6! They are robbing you blind with rice noodles and cheap sauce. The venue is nice. Lots of indoor seating options.... communal tables, couples tables, coffee tables and couches. Nice (shabby) outdoor patios. The cashiers I have encountered were an absolute bore. Completely monotoned, disinterested and lackluster. The kitchen and food runners seem to love their job and were pleasant. If anything TIP the kitchen! (they have their own tip jar - groovy!) The bathroom is... homey.... literally they welcome you to the back of house, by having their bathroom in the back past miscellaneous storage. Which frankly does not bother me, but I could imagine it would bother some snooty people. Parking is extremely minimal in their lot, but street parking is an option and free. All in all, 4 very sad experiences. The only thing that made my trips there worth it were the desserts. I am confident the only reason this place is still in business is because they are located in a good neighborhood and probably have a hefty amount of regular guests from their surrounding neighborhood. This is one of my favorite Thai Places in Austin. I have been to Thailand and I find much of their food to be very consistent with what you would eat there. I know some reviews have mentioned bad service, but I am always met with excellent service even on a busy night. I regularly go there for their happy hour and work away on my laptop, and no one gets mad at me for camping an hour or 2 at a table. I understand why some people have problems with this place, but you just have to take it for what it is - which is good healthy food made with organic and locally grown ingredients. If you're looking for authentic Thai, then this isn't the place for you. It's more of an Austin version of Thai food. Granted the food comes from a case, much like Whole Foods, and they heat it up in the microwave, but it is WAY better than the food at Whole Foods and the like. The restaurant is nice with plenty of seating and even has an extensive list of teas to choose from. And their Thai coffee is really good! Also, the staff is really friendly and helpful. Let me start this off by saying the Panang Curry was ABSOLUTELY heavenly and delicious and I am still dreaming of it. I know yelp is to review food but the food experience is so much more than that, and that is where Thai Fresh fails. Firstly, the price is kind of ridiculous. I mean, $16 for a curry during lunch on a Friday afternoon. Why doesn't this place have a lunch menu? This alone will deter me from eating here for lunch again, I can have lunch for $20 at much finer downtown establishments. ALSO, yes my curry was delicious but it promises that the chicken is bone-in and the meat will just fall off the bone. There were two bony pieces of chicken with the skin still on that I was able to salvage maybe 5 bites of chicken from, not to mention completely messy. They definitely skimp on meat. Secondly, the parking. You won't be able to park in their lot. Third, service. I ordered a Thai tea with my food. Food came after 20 minutes, where is my tea? Oh, they forgot. When I reminded her she seemed like I was being rude for interrupting the line, and then made the tea and left it on the counter. Also, the atmosphere is more like a dingy cafe/coffeeshop and that is fine, but for a $20 meal +drink, I was expecting a lot more. TL;DR Flavors are great, everything else not so much. read more

I really want to like this place more than I do. Every time I've been I've had mediocre food with service about the same. I ordered take out this evening. Tom Kha soup, with an extra side of white rice. They quoted me 15-20 mins. I came in well within that time frame, and the whole order/checkout situation was a mess. There were two women behind the register and they weren't very efficient and there didn't seem to be any order to who they were helping. Guests (who had already paid) had to keep asking if their orders were ready, and in fact they were. Just sitting behind the register. I finally paid, got my order and headed out the door for my 3 min drive home. I opened he food immediately. A sadly small serving of the soup, and no extra side of rice. The soup is luke warm at best and has a really mild, bland flavor. I'll be sticking to the little Thai trailor down 1st St. For the $$, food quality and service it is a way better deal. read more

This is the BEST Thai food joint in all of Austin. Seriously...Thai Fresh is a must taste treat for all those that love Thai food!! Not only is the food absolutely fresh, but it is hellva delish!!! Thai Fresh obviously takes great pride in selecting the highest quality ingredients mixed with some of the greatest thai recipes. I love this place for numerous reasons and they are always stepping it up and trying new dishes and twists on old favorites. It's uber tasty-ville!! They also have awesome cooking classes that are well taught, patient and informative. We also got to enjoy a full fab meal by eating all the dishes crafted by the master chef of Thai Fresh, Jam, a delicious result during the classes. She rocks and that can not be denied. Also her entire staff have always been super helpful and the service is all been amazing & friendly. Casual and laid back feel with really good Thai food. Pad Thai and Coconut Soup were impressive. All of the ice cream is dairy free and tasted great. They have a number of gluten free deserts of which we had the peanut butter chocolate pie which was really delicious and the kids loved it. My son loves the fried chicken and waffles which are completely GF. The line on the weekend is pretty long. I would hope they could figure out a way to separate the coffee, dessert, and ice cream line. The place is a little pricey, but I would recommend doing the meals family style as the rice and noodle dishes are pretty large, then reducing your meals based on the number of people dining and how much they eat. read more

Food poisoning... I've gone to this place a couple times before last night. The Thai food has always been good enough. Nothing to write home about, but in a pinch if you want Thai food it will hit the spot. My friend and I both ordered the same meal, except I ordered a cup of the Tom Kha. As usual, the food was okay. About 2 hours later I experience intense stomach cramping, fever and chills, diarrhea, nausea, muscle weakness, and headache. It lasted all night. This had never happened to me here before. This used to be my favorite restaurant... Plenty of Vegan & vegetarian options. I loved loved loved coming here. Now, not so much anymore. Here's why: The portions used to be much bigger - now they're about only 2/3 of what they used to be but for the same price. As well, the mushroom soy sauce has MSG in it & the rice isn't organic :(... A group of about 10 - 15 of us would come with our kids once per week because it seems so much healthier than most places & we were willing to pay extra... But now that portions are much smaller & they haven't been willing to make the switch we just don't come here as our first option anymore. read more

This has been one of my favorite places, but lately I've been increasingly disappointed. Pluses: the dishes are fresh, flavorful (mostly), and seem healthier than many Thai places. I think they also source local, which is great. The kitchen is visible so you know nothing bad is going on. The ice cream is great and I like the laid back Austin vibe. Also lots of gluten free and vegan desserts. Downsides: 1. Inconsistency - the taste of the dishes vary widely depending, I assume, on who is working in the kitchen that day. The Pad Ke Mow can go from spicy and delicious to bland and mushy. The curry can go from thick to thin. I will never understand restaurants that don't make an effort to get food consistent regardless of the chef. Management should regularly test for consistency. 2. Service - sometimes the food expo process is so bad that your order doesn't arrive, or your companions' doesn't arrive until long after yours does, or that salad that was supposed to come out first never does. We've seen expos utterly confused by which table ordered what, with tickets piling up. They do not seem to handle volume very well at all. 3. A/C - it's 110 outside this summer and 80 in Thai Fresh. How about you act like you care about our comfort and jack that ac up to at least 75. We pay enough for the food that it should cover the increased utility cost fine. Overall this place could be an awesome Austin gem that's going places, but management apparently is content with mediocrity, and it shows. You get the sense they would be fine without customers. The food is done very well. High quality ingredients, great deserts, and a relaxed ambiance. Parking is limited, and you order and pay before you're served. Update 11/03/15: I'm bummed, because I believe their food quality has gone down. The last 3 times I've ordered, I was greatly disappointed. read more
