Tucked away in the south Austin trendy neighborhoods you will find this little gem. I was very impressed with the food and variety. I had drunken noodles with chicken, Tom Kha soup, basil aqua fresca, and for dessert the Thai basil and Thai tea ice creams. Everything was wonderful, my palate was stimulated from all the unique flavors combined. The only thing I would like to see improve is this; the drunken noodles with chicken needs more chicken. Thai Fresh confuses me. I don't understand their business, nor their appeal. When they first opened, they had all the food in a cooler and when you ordered, they microwaved it. My husband and I subsequently called them "Thai Stale." Granted, this was a few years ago (8?) so they were probably on a shoestring at that time, and have since come a long way. But I have only been back once, so factor that into my review as you wish. The other night I was at Train my Dogs and noticed it was crazy hopping at Thai Fresh. And after hearing they have GF baked goods and DF ice cream, I figured I'd better try it since I am GF and DF. And I live in the neighborhood, so convenience. FFWD to today, driving past I miraculously notice a parking space, so I went in to sample said baked goods. I paid $9.65 for a very small oatmeal cookie /whoopie pie and a rather mushy brownie. $9.65?? The goods weren't that fresh, large or even that tasty. The most insane price for a treat that I've ever paid was a $6.00 GF donut in Big Bend. But hey, there is no food there, so I can deal. In Austin, however, we have many choices. read more

Hit up Thai Fresh for lunch today and was fairly pleased with the place. The interior is absolutely adorable - there's groceries, a deli-style restaurant, and a little ice cream shop all connected to a coffee shop that had some bluegrass band playing lovely music that could be heard throughout the restaurant and coffee shop. My friends and I ordered the coconut soup, coconut vermicelli noodles, and an order of pad thai. From what I understand, this place is typically a deli-style operation where you order your food from the case up front. However, I'm not sure if they are trying something new or if it's a Sunday thing, but we ordered from printed menus today. The soup was pretty good - I was a little taken aback by the taste since it wasn't sweet, but the flavors were still really good. The coconut vermicelli was my favorite of the three - a spicy sweet sauce with tofu and thin noodles. Delish. The pad thai was interesting - it's unlike any pad thai I've ever had before. There was no sauce, but still a lot of flavor - definitely had more of a smoky flavor to it than any other time I've had the dish (I can't figure out if it was party burnt or if it was intentional - probably not a great thing). I don't know if I'd order it again - it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Overall, I'd recommend the coconut vermicelli and then maybe some of the homemade ambriosa ice cream to top it off! read more

I am not so into the gluten/vegan craze. What brings me here is the Thai. Living in south Austin, there's a well noted shortage of Asian restaurants. While service might not be here, the quality of the food is pretty darn good. If you're in the area and want fast fresh and healthy Thai, stop in. If you're not in the area I would say its not worth the drive. Price is just right in my opinion, waiting in line behind people ordering coffee drinks to get food is their only flaw. I've been a handful of times but only had the pad Thai, but its one of the best I've had in town. Fun tip: this restaurant is on favor so if you wanna skip the wait but get the amazing pad Thai, order it from your iPhone and have the favor people bring it to you. the thai food was nice at this location. simple white rice and panang curry chicken~ nice kick in this dish. The fried chicken strips for the kiddo's meal, was literally small chicken strips that reminded me of fried calamari, also with a mound of white rice on the side. The pad thai was good, noodles and I believe it could have used more veggies, but ok in the end. Yes, it is pricey, but well worth it! I don't mind paying high dollar for good ingredients, interesting assortments, decent atmosphere, and filling portions. I had the "Red curry with Berkshire Pork and Asian eggplant" in what looked like a tiny bowl, but it was soooo delicious and filling with the accompanying Jasmine rice. I also had the Drunk noodles which had incredible flavors with every bite, and as far as portion size, I could barely finish it there was so much food, and I can really put away some food! Thai Fresh is one of my local favorites. It is a coffee shop / Thai restaurant combo. One side caters to the coffee crowd with small tables, couches, and one big long communal table. They have good looking pastries, fancy coffee drinks, and several local brews on tap (including my favorite 512 Pecan Porter). The other side is the Thai Restaurant, and the vibe is great - board games, cook books on the table. They often have live music, and it is a very fun and casual place to eat. The food is fantastic - I've had the Pad See Ew, which I love, and my friends have had some of the curries and other dishes - and they all love them. The food usually comes out quick. If I could request one improvement - it often takes a little while to order, especially if you are behind several people ordering coffee drinks, as the cashier is also the barista. Standing in line for 10-15 minutes to place your order on a busy night can be bit annoying. All in all - Thai Fresh is fantastic, and a great place to get a casual / fun dinner. read more

The only place I really like this place is because it's an anniversary spot for my husband and I. The food quality has gone down tremendously and the customer service is lacking. The last time I was there 3 people were standing behind the bar and paid me no attention , when i finally received the attention from one guy and kindly asked for a ice cream sample he looked at me without answering , raised his eyebrows and very rudely acted inconvenienced. Wonderful fresh Thai eat-in or take away concept. Nice bright space with four tables for eating in, a grocery/dry goods wall, and a cooler full of tasty beverages. My favorite is a new flavor from a recent Austin business Maine Root... Mandarin Orange Soda goes well with the spicy dishes prepared by Jam. Been three times to sample stuff and today it looks as though the business is up and running well. Have had the coconut chicken soup and the mango sticky rice(3 times)... I've learned to expect the unfriendly staff, weird restaurant layout, warm interior temps and flies because the food, although considerably overpriced, was tasty and the location was convenient to my house. I chalked the rest up to poor management. But I draw the line at gastrointestinal distress. Being in a highly trendy neighborhood in a divey old building, Thai Fresh is very popular; as such, you will both pay a premium as well as wait in line for a while (your not going to get served by waitresses); and hope to get parking in the lot (but don't count on it). Overall, its a nice little place with interesting decor. I went on a Sunday mid afternoon, and was lucky to get the one open parking spot, as well as have a short wait in line. By the time I left the line was long and people were waiting for parking in the lot. I ate a thai dish and had a small cup of coffee. Both were okay, the thai being on the salty side; I added chicken to my dish for a few dollars extra, but I wouldn't recommend that, since I only got what must have been an ounce or two of chicken (call it a half dozen tiny bits of chicken). You might want to go vegetarian there, since thats sort of who they cater to. The coffee was okay. The desserts looked awesome; I waited in line the second time for 8-10 minutes and got some coconut milk ice cream that was very good. That or the desserts would be the reason I'd go back. The staff also seemed very nice and helpful. In terms of the vibe, it had a Bouldin vibe, which is comparable to East Austin (or the Austin of yore). Meaning a little bit hipstery, and a little hippy, but mixed with a few older couples (likely the people with enough money to actually own a house in that area). I question the tables, which are essentially slats of wood with space between each plank, each space harboring bits of old dried up food and crumbs. I'd recommend a flat, smooth table top easy to clean, to the owners. Overall a trendy little place that is very crowded in a popular area thats seen insane growth, with an array of clientele and interesting meals, drinks and desserts. You will spend as much as you would at a nicer thai restaurant which has a waitstaff; my dish before tax or tip was around $15-$16. My dish wasn't so good just because it was very salty, but I'm guessing there are some good ones, or maybe the salt shaker slipped in the cooks hands, but I hear they use quality ingredients. If your walking around the area, and looking to do something low key or eat some unique/good ice cream, or just a beer/wine, its a good little place to go and I'd recommend it. If your wanting thai/pan asian food in a restaurant setting, I'd likely go to Sway or Elizabeth Street up the road. read more

You know, it depends what you're coming here for. If want hipster ambience, leftover furniture, poetry readings, coffee, and a glass of wine, you will love this place. Very artsy-fartsy. Friendly sort of 1970s commune "hey man" atmosphere done up with a funky organic something or other one one half and a stoner-like Thai place at the other. Feels like The 5th Dimension's "Age of Aquarius" personified. If you come for the food, well, I'm sure it's healthy as they can name the farms where all the stuff comes from with grass-fed this and free-range that. Vegan, organic, local, sustainable are common utterances but the food on the Thai side is hit or miss. We had a beef and pineapple fried rice. Tiny little portion and there were just little bits of hamburger here and there. I guess that makes the cow sustainable. We had a basic noodle thing too and also small and unappetizingly greasy but it was fried so you come to expect such things. It was $10 a pop for each of these so a little on the high side. I'd definitely go back for the ambience but, frankly, unsustainable food seems to taste better. read more

Ordered take-out. Two orders of green curry, one with beef one with chicken. $16 each before tax. Flavor was spot on!! The servings were mostly sauce with very little chicken/ beef. At $16 a pop, I was a little disappointed. The to-go packaging was off. The cardboard absorbed all the moisture from the rice. Good flavor, just not good for take-out. This is authentic Thai and very very good. The owner was right there behind the counter making something quite interesting looking. However- portion size is a bit on the small side. If you're going to charge $9.50 for two dishes I want to feel full after I am done eating. I COULD HAVE ATE DOUBLE WHAT WAS GIVEN AND I AM NO GLUTTON. Neither of my two container compartments were actually full but they were drowning in the delectable sauce which gave the illusion of there being more food than there was. I've been wanting to try Thai Fresh for a while now, and was stoked to take home my green curry and veggie egg rolls. I was, however, immediately put off by the proportions. The egg rolls, for example, were two of those tiny ones listed as spring rolls on many menus, for $4.50. I was paying about a dollar a bite and, while they were good, they were certainly not worth that. Same issue with the curry. I love that you get to pic your veggies, but that wasn't enough of a plus to compensate for the fact that it was such a small container. I'm used to having leftovers when I go for Thai, but $20 later I had none. I love the move away from tipping, and I love locally sourced produce, etc. but I still need to feel like I'm getting something decent for the expense. I might even have forgiven the curry if it had been top notch, but it was in the middling to decent range. It tasted closer to what I am able to cook at home that what I get from my favorite spots. Those eggrolls on the other hand, I feel legitimately hosed. I'll come back for coffee and ice cream, but the menu is a no go for me from here on out. read more

It looks like they've expanded since my last visit and now there is more space with additional picnic bench style seating. A tea bar (and desserts) has been added. I love the woodsy aroma and the casual community feel of this place. The menu selections are behind a deli style case and you order your meal at the counter. Items are then heated up for you in the microwave. Its self service on the utensils, napkins, water and condiments, and the same goes for busing your table. The menu changes and on this visit I tried the tofu yellow curry and the drunken chicken and noodles. The curry was perfectly seasoned and just the right amount of heat; it was delicious and I scooped up every last bit. The drunken noodles weren't quite heated through and the dish lacked....something. But I've discovered the condiments "bar" is an absolute must here, and after doctoring up the noodles they were quite tasty. Our issue was time to order - the first try had a line of 8 individuals in front of us. Took ~20 minutes to get to the front and order. Okay, I expect there to be a slight wait to order food, so that's fine. The next trip up was around 1:45 - to get an ice cream for my kids. Another 20 minute wait. Maybe have 2 lines guys - one for coffee and treats and one for food? Third trip up was for a coffee. 15 more minutes waiting. Okay too much. The service is friendly, but I don't care about that too much when waiting so much. Be a little less friendly and get some hustle. read more

Thai Fresh is probably one of my favorite local Austin restaurants that has been around for decades and never disappoints. It is a very relaxing place with a calm atmosphere and 2 main sitting areas: dining and cafe. The workers are paid livable wages with benefits and this is already included in the menu pricing, so tipping is optional but a nice gesture for good service. That being said, don't expect everything to be done at breakneck speed when it comes to service. They aren't rushing to get you out the door in order to max out tips. You will be served, just sit back, relax and enjoy your party's company (if you don't like relaxing environments or can't take a moment to breathe just order carry out). The best part about Thai Fresh would be the versatile menu options, especially their wide dessert selection. Most of which is Vegan, gluten free or paleo. They also make their own ice cream in house out of coconut milk and have a wide range of flavors to choose from. This is a great place to pick up any meal of the day, since they also do breakfast specials and have a great coffee bar. Even if the city is having issues that shut other restaurants down, like the contaminated water crisis a while back, they find a way to keep their doors open safely. Extra bonuses: a lot of their produce is locally sourced, they are very zero waste oriented business (reusable everything, no plastic straws and crap), they offer cooking classes which can make for a fun date night, they do have a free parking lot (albeit a small one, if it fills up you can park in the neighborhood for free) read more

This used to be good. Its very bad now. Ambiance and service continuous to be good but quality of food has deteriorated drastically. We ordered 6 entrees today and they were all bad. The drunken noodles were soggy, greasy and the chicken in it was of poor quality, more like chicken scraps. I felt bloated and sick after eating it, certainly not 'Thai Fresh'. I love the Pad Thai at Thai Fresh! Delicious! I definitely can't replicate it at home. There were three different curries to try from when I was there, as well as a number of other dishes. The Pad Thai and curry were plenty for me. I got an entire plate full of food. I left fuller than I had anticipated. Thai Fresh also has a decent mix of meat and vegetarian options. I wish this place were bigger so that they could also stock produce. It's great to see various Thai foods and ingredients as well as meat, but I would definitely enjoy a produce section. Thai Fresh isn't designed to be a Whole Foods or Central Market, I know . . . . I just wouldn't mind if it could be expanded. Perhaps if they were bigger, they could address some of the problems that other people mentioned in their reviews, such as having the space to put things on hot plates. The store has only been in business a couple of months, I think, so maybe they will expand as time goes on. read more

First of all, I may be a little biased, because I live right around the corner. My husband and I really love family owned/operated businesses, and this one is an outstanding one. The husband and wife team really stand behind their investment, and put their special "polish" on everything. They have bought out the next door, Cafe Caffeine, which is now known as Thrice, focusing more on Coffees, breakfast foods, desserts, and sandwiches. Thai Fresh is known for their tasty, fresh cold case dishes...Everything is displayed, and the staff is very knowledgeable on levels of "spicyness". My favorite is the sweet potato and tofu red massaman curry. Their coconut vermicelli is also to die for, as well as their Aqua Frescas! Delicious flavors such as Thai Basil Lime, and Blackberry Ginger. Yumm. Oh, and they serve it in a HUGE glass. This place is not chincho on anything. My husband swear's by their homemade ice cream, although I'm not a big ice cream fan. Evenings when I don't feel like cooking we walk over here, and have never had a negative experience. read more

Fantastic tea (why is really good quality, good variety of tea so hard to find in a city with so many coffee shops?!). AMAZING gluten free baked goods and dairy-free ice cream. I gain 10 lbs just walking in the door. I've only had their thai once, but based on other reviews I definitely need to indulge more. Spacious and great place to work. My only real complaints? Its hot as hades inside--always! Thai Fresh hasn't quite caught on to how much Texans are obsessed with their air conditioning! Plus sometimes it can be REALLY loud. Not the customers, but somehow the barristas seem to be really really noisy. Perhaps its just the acoustics and way the shop is set up. My wife and I were looking for a good Thai restaurant in Austin since moving here from Florida. A friend recommended this restaurant and said it had great food. The food did not disappoint, it was some of the best Thai I have ever had. The waiter was friendly and answered any questions we had, and because they temporarily forgot our Kombucha, they added half a pint for free! Very tasty homemade dishes, and their ginger-hibiscus tea is awesome! I also like how cute the place is. Yet, I regret to say that I felt the price was a little too expensive. I know they use a lot of organic and fresh, local ingredients, and the dishes are really yummy. Just wish they could take a bit more effort in making the price competitive, or be more liberal with the portions. While I understand that this place may not be everyone's ideal-- it is completely my type of restaurant. The food is simple, heartfelt and DELICIOUS! Anyone who has issues with the microwave re-heating is missing the point completely. There has not been one single dish that was disappointing. The curries and thai green beans are always my favorites. And be sure to leave room for desserts as those molasses/ginger cookies are sublime. I love the simple decor and mix-match plates. We live around the corner and wanted a place we could walk with our kiddos for a great meal. I ordered the drunken noodles and it was so spicy, I couldn't enjoy it. There was nothing in the menu to suggest this was a spicy dish. When I asked the server about this, he shrugged and said, "next time you'll know." I still had to pay full price for a meal that was inedible. So, yeah, next time I'll know not to go there. Also, they have a water feature that doesn't work and is now a mosquito breeding farm. I love Thai Fresh! My wife has multiple food allergies (gluten, egg, dairy, citrus and legumes) and she has never had a reaction at Thai Fresh. This is due, in part, to our caution and attentiveness to ingredients, etc.). However, I have to give a great deal of credit to the staff at Thai Fresh. This past weekend, our server (Jessica) was so very kind, patient, and took about half a dozen trips to ask questions of the chef. Jessica, you are amazing and I cannot thank you enough. Service whenever we have visited has always been quick, friendly, and attentive. The food (Bangkok Style Thai) has always been great (though they use a little more sugar in some dishes than would be my preference). I love their deserts (especially the Lavender Caramel coconut ice cream). In 2014, Thai Fresh hosted our wedding rehearsal dinner. Everything went smoothly and was a lot of fun. read more

If your fantasy is to be able to eat fresh, delicious Thai food in a relaxed setting and follow it up with coffee or homemade ice cream, then this place is for you. I went with friends and blatantly stole food off their plates so that I'd know which dishes were the most delicious. My verdict: order the chicken over rice. It sounds plain, but it packs some serious flavor and a heap of comfort. It's like the solid and plated version of a great chicken soup. I could eat this any time, day or night, and feel better about the world. I tried the pad see ewe and the masaman curry with sweet potato--both vegetarian--and really enjoyed them as well. Of the two, I'd go pad see ewe if dining again. Although the portion is way too big for one person. The tom kha soup was solid and flavorful. Another friend of mine had a chef special curry which was extremely creamy and delicious. There was no crowd, no wait, and a very casual atmosphere that made it easy to envision getting a quick bite of fresh thai on a moment's notice. I did feel, overall, that I liked their meat dishes better than the ones we'd ordered vegetarian. But that may have been my undying love for Thai-style chicken over rice. I really liked the food here - everything was spicier than I might expect (even pad thai, which seems generally bland to me). The food seemed fresh, and definitely made to order, as I watched them prepare it in the big open kitchen. The atmosphere is funky, and the restaurant is attached to a store that has some fun items for sale (squid bits, anyone?). They have good beer on tap, and the "yummiest wings" were, as promised, very yummy. And I'm reasonably picky. Overall fun place, good food, worth the trip.
