Wanted Thai close to my office and this place came up. It is part of a strip mall location primarily filled with other restaurants as well. Parking can be a little challenging during lunch rush. Both indoor and outdoor seating and tables upstairs. Friendly younger cashier who was helpful and asked the right questions. I ordered an egg roll and chicken fried rice. I was asked how spicy I would like the rice. This was a first and I just said mild since I would probably season it myself. Was given a number and took a seat. Food was personally delivered. It arrived HOT which was great. The egg roll was crisp and not greasy. The sweet and sour sauce almost tasted like honey and had that consistency. The rice was just okay. It did lack flavor and not because of spiciness. Not sure if it lacked fish sauce or what. It was a large portion with some of chicken. Maybe a few pieces of egg and scant peas. I probably would return to try something else and even get another chicken egg roll. I would probably ask to have the fried rice amped up a little. My favorite Thai restaurant! They make authentic panang curry... none of this undeveloped thin curry sauce! Thai Spices' panang flavor tastes like the curry has layers of flavor, simmered to perfection. They're eggplant basil chicken is the best I've tasted also. Even they're chow mein is uniquely simple yet flavorful. And of course they're classic, basil chicken.... so much flavor and so good... They know what "spicy" is!! Thai Spice is in contention for the worst restaurant in Irvine. I ordered the BBQ chicken plate ($10.25) for lunch and wish I had done a little more research before wandering into this place. The bad: -The chicken was so dry you could probably use it as wood tinder or cardboard filler. In the photo, you can see how burnt the chicken is and how the plastic fork bent in 3 different directions when I attempted to cut this cremated bird. -The rice was equally dry and even more tasteless The only positive was the service. The guys behind the counter were nice and professional. Honestly, I should have known when I saw the $2.99 teriyaki chicken bowl special at a Thai restaurant. Listen to the reviews... Ordered through Postmates without checking Yelp and was disappointed. Small portions and poor packaging. I got the yellow curry and had to double check if they got my order right because it tasted different than the typical yellow curry. Everything came in one small container, with the rice packaged next to the curry. Not sure if they didn't fill it all the way or if it's because some of the curry spilled over to the rice, but it wasn't full when I got it. I didn't even care for the rice though since it was so mushy to begin with (even the parts that weren't touching the curry). The curry itself was watery. We phone ordered ahead and confirmed that our order would take 30 minutes. We went on time to inquire about our order. They scrambled in the back & looked lost but came back to tell us it was not ready yet. We waited an additional 10 minutes before asking again. They told us we were the next order after the one they were working on. After 10 additional minutes, we checked one more time & they told us again that we were next in line. We received our order finally after the third inquiry. Frustrated, we took our order home. We sat down to eat, hungry, but we found a piece of hair & a strange liquid slimed across the top of 2 of our boxes. I've attached the images of the things below. While waiting for our to go order I noticed a Male working in the back placing wide noodles into baggies, without gloves. He then noticed a customer come in and he proceeded to ring up their order. He then handled cash money and completed the transaction. The Man then walked back to the preparation area and continued to place noodles into baggies with his bare hands. The Tom Kha Kai soup was scalding hot. My guy and I both burned our tongues even after mixing it, and letting it sit for a while. The entree's were "ok". I took my order home and opened up my plate, steamed "FRESH" 8 minutes later. The presentation, taste, and having to see them serve my Thai Iced Tea through a soda fountain, explains it. The service I got here lacked. The lady who called my order forgot to give me my Thai Iced Tea and did not apologize. I had to ask for it and she could've prepared it for me while I waited for my food. She was at the counter preparing hot sauces in those little condiment cups, but didn't offer any to me when I picked up my order. Finally, I got no "thank you" from that lady (when I spent over $11 bucks for just a plate and drink!). Thai Spice can be acceptable for having a good variety of choices in their menu and they do make your food fresh with decent portions. They have a brown rice option too. I ordered a #46 which has green peppers, Thai leaves, etc. Pictures to be included below, what I received versus what I ordered. Located next to the Pho Factory. Parking can be hard to find during lunch time because of the lunch rush so just come a little bit earlier than 12! So I was assuming that they would seat you and then you order, but you order at the counter and then they bring you your food. They also have a quick take out area where you could just point at the hot food behind the counter and they will box it up for you and you'll be on your way! They have a second story where you could sit too! What I got: Beef Pad See Ew ($8): not exactly the pad see ew I was expecting. I'm use to the wide flat rice noodles with egg, beef, and Chinese broccoli. This place had carrots, American? broccoli, baby carrots, and egg. Wouldn't consider this pad see ew and didn't even really taste like it, but it was still good. It was almost like just a stir fry noodle dish. Service: Friendly people behind the counter. I really enjoy this particular location. I usually get the soft tofu pad thai with no spice and it is delicious almost every time and reasonably priced. I once had this encounter with one of the girls who worked there during the last holiday season and she was on top of her game! I phoned in a to go order and she was the only one there when I came to pick up my order, therefore I assumed she answered the phone but anyways, she was very sweet and attentive. She checked my order and asked if there was anything else she could do. I know this is typically a part of their job but not many execute it through every service. I really appreciated her attentiveness and how helpful she was. A few days ago, I phoned in another order and the girl who took my order literally ignored everything I said. It sounded like she was having a conversation with someone else while she was talking to me because all I heard was giggling. It got irritating when I had to repeat my order 4 times! I understand phone orders are difficult to hear sometimes but 4 times?! come on ... Anyways after we "confirmed" the order, she just hung up on me, didn't tell me how much it was or how long it was going to be. Luckily my order was correct when I went to pick it up . I still give this place 4 stars because their food is good, it's made pretty quickly, and it is reasonably priced. I love Thai food, I really do but for some odd reason this place just doesn't hit the spot for me. I've been here a few times before and each time I've ordered something different. First time I ordered the red curry with chicken and rice... They got the spicy right but it was so sweet! Second time I ordered a soup... And it was ok. But what I don't find dandy is that surprisingly, even though I am a sweet tooth, the flavoring of their noodles is just too sweet! Again! Its like theres a whole cup of sugar in my food! Lol. Something is wrong if I'm starving and I've taken more than a few bites and I've lost my appetite. But no, this just aint the spot for me. So, after having sat down for just five minutes... If a thai restaurant can't make this dish well, I don't bother. Their Pad Thai is spot on. Perfect sauciness, perfect amount of "other stuff" --noodles, chives, sprouts, meat, and large portion! Came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Not much to say about this place. The food itself is solid and fairly quick. Its not the greatest Thai food you will ever order but its definitely not the worst. I ordered the pad see ewe and it came a little burnt. That was a bit disappointing. Its really hit or miss here but after living down the street from here in irvine , I kinda got used to it. I think I used to get the very hot because I remember wanting to rip my lips off because they were on fire. I got mild yesterday, and it wasn't too spicy at all. I didn't even need to add the chili powder I asked for on the side! Also, they do offer the cheap pizza flakes that I'm not too fond of. Still, the dish was spicy enough I didn't need it. Last point: I kept asking for pork pad thai because every other Thai place I've gone to lets you specify the type of meat. They kept repeating it as "OK, one order pad thai" with no mention of my chosen meat. Then when I got my dish I see that it's a combination of beef and one piece of shrimp. No biggie... But you could, you know.. tell me that you offer only one kind of pad thai, rather than just ignore the two times I asked for PORK pad thai. Portions weren't that big so I'm surprised with the other reviews here saying portions were big. Pad thai was mediocre (and sweet). I really hate to sound so nitpicky but getting pad thai from here was just unpleasant. Although the customer service was irritating at best, I would go back because it's open till 10 (everything else closes at 9 here in freakin' Irvine!!) and it is cheap. I use to really like this place but I went today to try to satisfy my craving and I thought the pad thai was made terribly. And I was starving too; which is presumably suppose to make food taste better! Here is what I found wrong with my food: -I asked for super spicy and the noodles tasted sweet to me -the noodles itself had this hard chewy texture to it, which it normally didn't have in the past -On top of that the food was overly greasy and wet. I'm not sure if they changed cooks but I wouldnt want to go here again if the food remains the same. I need to find a new place to quench my pad thai cravings! I eat here quite a bit but never thought to write a review and decided to write one today because I want to support the small shops amidst the coronavirus. I hope this restaurant never shut down. Food is soooo good especially for the price, such a good deal! I went and picked up my food today and I love that they've taken precautionary measures to prevent the coronavirus spread. They put up plastic shielding barriers held up with PVC pipes between the register and customer and blocking off the food counter area too. That's reassuring to know that while my food is waiting for me to get picked up it's still protected. My favorite dishes are their pad see ew, pineapple fried rice, pad Thai, red curry, and green curry. I wish they had papaya salad, that's the only bad thing but they still totally deserve the 5 stars since they're friendly and their food is yummy. read more
